Editorial Review:

It's Brenda Midnight's birthday; she's dropped a hatful of hints and is sure her friends are planning a surprise party. So when the Greewich Village miliner gets a phone call that her exotic friend Dweena's been kidnapped, Brenda figures she'll go along with the gag until the moment they all yell "surprise!" After practicing a stunned look, Brenda digs up Dweena's fake cash, stuffs it in a hatbox, and hands the ransom over to the fake kidnapper. The bad actor pops off a couple of shots and drives off with the cash and Dweena, bound and gagged. Surprise!

Brenda's friend Dweena, whose self-appointing gig is boosting illegally parked diplomatic cars, he has been heisted by a sleazy ambassodor. When the Not-So-Excellency from Gintoflakokia ends up in the pokey, accused of killing a local barfly, Dweena expects Brenda to find the real murderer so they can spring the sleaze and get her look back. And while she's doing that, Brenda blows the lid off more than she bargained for-about the past, the present ...and even her trusted friend.

An off beat but delightful amateur sleuth tale 5 out of 5 stars.

If Brenda Midnight used her brain she would have said no when her boyfriend's sleazy agent Lemon B. Crenshaw asked her to marry him. He wins her hand in matrimony by persuading her that he illegally resides in this country, but not for long as the INS has caught up with him. If deported, Lemon explains that he will not be able to rejuvenate her boyfriend's sagging career. Unbelievably, Brenda falls for the entire sad sack story and marries Lemon even though they keep separate residences.

Brenda becomes furious when she learns she must remain married to Lemon for six months. Her ire rises to stroke levels when she finds out he actually needed to wed her to win a bet. Determined to get even with the slimy Lemon, Brenda breaks into husband's apartment and steals her husband's valuable brassiere collection. A thump in the apartment above frightens Brenda who flees Lemon's apartment. At the elevator, she runs into a rude stranger. At home Brenda learns that someone murdered the wealthy philanthropist who lived above Lemon. She knows what the thump was and tracks down her fellow elevator rider. Each accuses the other of murder to the bewildered police.

Barbara Jaye Wilson writes humorous mysteries that will appeal to fans of cozies and amateur sleuth tales. Some of the one-liners throughout MURDER AND THE AND HATTER will leave the audience deeply laughing. Whimsical characters from previous works augment a tender feeling of familiarity while propelling the complex mystery forward without giving many clues to the reader. Ms. Wilson makes reading fun.

Hell Hat(H) No Fury

Slimy low-rent talent agent Lemon B. Crenshaw exceeds the bounds of friendship when he cons Greenwich Village hat designer Brenda Midnight and entangles her in a terrible legal bind. Vowing to get even, she hits Lemmy where it hurts by stealing his beloved brassiere collection right off his living room walls. While filching the bras, Brenda hears a thud, which she later learns was the sound of a dead body hitting the floor above.

An Accusation with No Foundations

Bra-napper Brenda is sure the murderer is the hurried, briefcase-toting man who slams into her as she smuggles the bras out of the building. But Briefcase Boy has an alibi -- and he tells the cops Midnight dunnit. Now Brenda needs the uplifting support of her wacky Village pals -- as she dons her sleuthing hat...and sets out to find a killer before she, herself, is busted for murder!

A very pleasant surprise 5 out of 5 stars.

I admit it - after reading the back cover, I was expecting this to be just another forgettable, gimmicky, amateurish foray into mystery fiction. I was very pleasantly surprised. Wilson's distinct style comes through right away, and she gives milliner Brenda Midnight an excellent voice that makes her fun to get to know as she discovers strengths she never knew she possessed.

Brenda Midnight owns Midnight Millinery - the Greenwich Village hat shop from which she took her name - and the book opens with Brenda working diligently on the bridal veil for the high-profile, high-profit wedding her dress designer friend Carla won the contract on. This brief intro takes us right into the mystery action as a woman dressed from head to toe in hot pink bursts into the shop, pulls a gun on Brenda, and demands all of the hats for the wedding party. Once Brenda gets over the initial shock of being robbed, she tries to consult Carla on a plan of action for salvaging the wedding, which is just a few days away, only to discover that Carla has been freshly murdered.

To make matters worse, if you can imagine that, Carla bled all over the bridal gown, and the police eschew Brenda's Lady in Pink connection to follow up on bogus accusations that Carla was a prostitute with drug connections. Brenda must now deal with an irate bride and her mother, the ruin of her reputation in the fashion industry, and the loss of her close friend whose name is being dragged through very muddy headlines. Unable to concentrate on her fall line of hats, Brenda turns to her ex-boyfriend Johnny, who isn't a detective but played one on TV once, for help finding the Lady in Pink and restoring Carla's reputation.

What ensues is madness. Brenda impersonates a legal temp in search of a connection between the bride and the Lady in Pink and falls for the law firm's computer consultant, who may or may not be involved in Carla's murder. Brenda's computer nerd friend hacks into the law firm's personnel files, teams up with Carla's artist neighbor to turn Brenda's shop into a desktop publishing studio, and tries to get Brenda and Johnny back together. Johnny, researching his next cop role, buddies up with the investigating officers and, with his agent's help, gets them back on track and locates a connection to an infamous hit man named Snake. (I don't want to spoil it for you by revealing any details, but Snake's non-hostage scene had me laughing out loud.) Also in the mix are an obnoxious yuppie intent on procuring Carla's condo, a secretary intent on blackmailing her boss for a trip to Europe, a philandering art gallery owner, a tiny canine bundle of energy named Jackhammer, a box of hand-sewn silk ties, an estate collection of medieval textiles, an Internet romance, and a dispute over an ugly shag rug.

Wilson deftly combines serious reflection on death and crime with fun potshots at the conventions of the modern mystery novel. The characters are quirky and full of surprises, adding texture without being annoying, and Greenwich Village itself lends character to the book's events. The pacing was excellent, and I thoroughly enjoyed Wilson's witty use of the language. I hope the rest of the series is as good as this one.

Editorial Review:

Meet Brenda Midnight
She's a savvy young designer with her own hat shop, who has never even thought of chasing crooks. But when crime invades her cobblestone Greenwich Village neighborhood and the cops don't have a clue, Brenda has to drop everything, including her hats, to catch a thief. . .and a killer.

Chasing The Lady In Pink
There's big money to be made if Brenda and her dress designer friend Carla can create the high society wedding of the year. Carla's covering the bride and her maids with dresses to die for, and Brenda's doing the hats. But just as Brenda's finishing the last of the exquisite headgear, she's held up by a woman in a hot pink suit, who escapes with the entire collection. Brenda takes off after her high priced hats and runs straight into her friend Carla -- dead! It's bloody murder -- but Brenda can't convince the men in blue that they should be chasing the mysterious Lady in Pink -- who may have come up with her own design. . . .for murder.

Editorial Review:

BRENDA WILL DO ANYTHING FOR A FRIEND. . .

Irrepressible Greenwich Village milliner Brenda Midnight has already proved she's as good at unmasking murdered as she is creating gravity-defying hats. This time she's in hot water. Worse, she's dragged others in with her--and all because she's willing to so anything for her friends--no questions asked.

ESPECIALLY AFTER MIDNIGHT

A pair of wacky friends need a hand to get an embarrassing corpse out of the family feather showroom. Brenda is willing to help on one condition--that they'll dump the body at the city morgue, where it'll be properly taken care of. In agreement, Brenda borrows a car from talent agent Lemmy Crenshaw. All goes according to plan except for one hitch--the friends hadn't revealed the whole truth. This was not a case of a bad ticker; this was murder. And, since Lemmy's car was their temporary hearse, the cops nab him. To get the innocent agent off, Brenda is forced to put her spring line on hold and devote full time to unveiling the killer.

Highly recommended. 5 out of 5 stars.

I enjoyed this book immensely. I have read all three and enjoy the character development that has occurred. Ms. Wilson hits her stride with character development in this book. Greenwich Village is an important part of the book as well and Ms. Wilson knows her Village; yet her characters from out of town are equally well written; I particularly liked her ex-husband and his wife. The pace was fast and my interest in the book never flagged. I look forward to the next one.

The Best Brenda Midnight Yet 5 out of 5 stars.

I think the title says it all. I will add that, sitting alone in my house, I laughed so hard the pictures rattled.

Lighthearted Mystery 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a fun, lighthearted mystery with lots of colorful, offbeat characters and Greenwich Village atmosphere. The sleuth is a milliner and while she's solving crimes she's also designing next season's hat collection.

Editorial Review:

In her colorful, tree-lined neighborhood, Brenda Midnight has set Midnight Millinery, where she creates gravity-defying hat designs. But when Brenda's ex-husband Nado P. Sharpe finds a very dead body on the garage floor where he parked his van, it's all too clear that danger lurks in the lot. So Brenda Midnight, milliner and sleuth extraordinaire, is back in action for the third time to catch a killer.
