I found this book gripping, exciting and humorous. Detective Jack Frost has his own inapt way of solving crime and will do anything to avoid paperwork and confrontations with the Divisional Commander. Some folk are not convinced Frost to be a suitable detective, but think again as he's not as foolish as some might believe. ! I just can't wait to begin the next novel by Wingfield which I am told are as good if not better than this one. - I recommend this to anyone, even if murder mystery is not your 'cup of tea'. ! 5 Stars.

I love the mysteries of Colin Dexter and Reginald Hill, so when a friend mentioned that the Frost series had a lot in common with them, I had to buy one. I was definitely not disappointed. Jack Frost is the most hilarious character I've ever come across. He usually says whatever pops into his head whether it's appropriate or not.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes British police procedurals. You won't be disppointed!

Every Frost book I read is such supurb pleasure that I want to just keep reading it. This one is no exception. It is not Agatha Christie, nor is it Shakespeare. It is classic, never-the-less. It wont suit all - some people prefer more long words, or their sense of humour is too restricted. Frost books keep me on the edge of the seat, and emotionally charged. Sometimes I laugh, sometimes I am just too absorbed. Winter Frost (like all the others) had just these effects. The TV series is good (David Jason is excellant) but the books are much more involved and dark. If you've read and enjoyed one book - you'll love the rest. If you haven't, then give it a try! Because although each book has some similarities (LIFE is LIKE THAT) it is equally true to say that each book is different. If one reviewer tells you the characters are cardboard, then I say I know several of the characters in real life. different names, but it's them never-the-less. maybe that makes real life cardboard. I dunno. But I just love these books.

Detective Inspector Jack Frost, Denton Division, is not beloved by his superiors. In fact, he's something of a pain in the brass: unkempt and unruly, with a taste for crude humor and a tendency to cut corners. They'd like nothing better than to bounce him from the department. The only problem is, Frost's the one D.I. who, by hook or by crook, always seems to find a way to get the job done. It's a high price to pay for a pak of smokes when Frost interrupts his vacation to filch some of Commander Mullett's cigarettes and finds himself pressed into emergency duty. Denton Division is shorthanded after a car crash involving several tipsy high-ranking cops, and on Guy Fawkes night there's more mischief abroad than just a few children making the rounds begging for pennies and lighting firecrackers. In the next few days, Frost will deal with a parade of miscreants, including a blackmailer, a shifty businessman, a not-so-greiving widow, a sexual pervert or two, a crazed housewife, and a cold-blooded kidnapper. Detective Inspector Jack Frost of Denton CID is an aging, scruffy, undisciplined, irreverent and intuitive sleuth who manages to solve all those nasty cases that baffle his more conventional colleagues. ýA Touch of Frostý, the first in a five-novel series by playwright and former comedy writer, R.D. Wingfield, is an engrossing whirlwind of rape victims, body bags and multiple suspects that drive Frost and Webster, his newly-demoted side-kick, over four sleepless days and nights.

Utilizing plain language, expert composition and the bawdy humour that is the seriesý hallmark, Wingfield deftly steers the plotýs interwoven complexities, such that the reader is immediately hooked by this irresistible page-turner. The entire cast of characters, from the odious Commander Mullett to the unwashed derelict, Wally Peters, is vividly and believably drawn. And, as befits the title, a chilling frost clings to the gruesome crime scenes and suitably shrouds the corpse-strewn town.

A word of caution, however: The relentless irreverence and grim humour that limns virtually every page of this novel are bound to offend some sensibilities and annoy others, especially those readers accustomed to drawing-room mysteries, or to the literary school of detective fiction. But for those of us with the wit and the grit, the Frost books are a refreshing and welcome throwback to an earlier style, when the protagonist was not a recovering alcoholic with dysfunctional offspring, but was simply an honest copper who went out and got the job done, with a minimum of fuss. Highly recommended.

Frost is a new series character for me and I will enjoy following him in this series. He is brash, rude, profane, obscene, callous, rough-edged, filthy minded and has poor personal hygiene. Nonetheless, he is also relentless and compassionate. He gets his bad guy and also shares the credit.

Most of the police have the flu and -- of course that's when a whole series of crimes take place, piling up on the exhausted Jack Frost. (Would someone's parents really do that to a child?) meanwhile, his vicious and incompetent superior is looking over his shoulder trying to find an excuse to scrape the Frost out of the force.

Very enjoyable 4 out of 5 stars.

After reading all the Colin Dexter Inspector Morse books and feeling at a loss as to what could possibly satisfy me after such a delightful and rich reading experience, I was lucky enough to find Frost.Definitely not politically correct but what fun to read ! Great stuff.

This is my first Frost book and I'm an immediate fan. I've watched all of the TV series and loved them and am now enjoying the book too. The TV people have cleaned him up quite a bit physically and cleaned up his language too, as they'd have to in order to pass the censors but he still makes a wonderful character. The dishevelled, grubby, newly widowed Frost is joined by a new offsider, Det.Sgt.Frank Gilmore, only 24 years old, and totally unable to comprehend how this grubby, crumpled older man could possibly be the crack policeman that he is. As usual, the always fussy and inept Police Superintendent Mullett is always there to exasperate Frost, who does his job expertly, but in his own unorthodox way. There are two separate cases taking place, one the serial murders of old age pensioner women who are found with their throats slashed, and the other being a case of arson and murder. The writing is tight and the book flows seamlessly as the overworked police team from Denton moves in on the criminals. It's a great read which I can't praise highly enough.
