She Came Back to the Begining 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Out of print and driving me crazy, thank god this one came back. I was given the third book (She Came By the Book) years ago, and collected the rest. Finally, I get to read the begining about how Emma wound up a PI. This book is a wonderful kick off for the series, and while the second book was dissapointing, I was thrilled to have gotten my hands on the start of it all.

Emma's in Boston, where she runs into a bevy of bewhildering circumstances that make her dig for the truth. I could do without the drugs, but Mary Wings sets up the groundwork for a great character and a wonderful world.

Editorial Review:

In 1987 Mary Wings introduced the character of Emma Victor, and a legend was born. Emma Victor was described by Publishers Weekly as "an interesting and thoroughly likable protagonist" and by Inside Books as "one of the best new detectives around. She's smart and funny and she can sling a one-liner like nobody's business." Wings was hailed as "one of the most exciting authors to find her niche in lesbian mystery writing." She Came Too Late is the first of five sharp-witted and fast-paced books in the Emma Victor series, which counts among its fans, Sandra Scoppettone, Sally Gearhart, and Barbara Wilson. Wisecracking and willful, Emma sets about tracking down a killer as she unearths secrets about high-society Bostonians and a financially failing women's clinic. Discover what legions of fans around the world already know: Emma Victor is a force to be reckoned with, and her creator, Mary Wings, is a talent of gigantic proportions.

ok so maybe i'm a little over the top in my hyperbole, but this book is worth every penny and that's no hype !!!.

forget the fancy stain removal items advertised on t.v.
this book tells you how to use simple, available, and common everyday items to clean your clothes and keep them that way.
items like ammonia, vinegar, detergent, pre-wash. items we all have in the house.

and the best part is they work!!. i have removed stains like mustard, tomato sauce, and blood - some of the ...stains in the world.

i give this book as baby gift, wedding gift housewarming gift etc.

although we can do nothing about death and taxes, we can certainly do something about stains. this book is a must buy !!!

Emma Victor, the witty, intrepid heroine of the acclaimed She Came Too Late, is hot on the trail of Lana Flax, her best friend's kid sister, a onetime physics prodigy turned member of the yellow-clad cult of the Vishnu Divine Inspiration Center. When Lana finally turns up-dead-Emma begins to wonder if cult members turn on with something stronger than yogurt and higher consciousness.

Mary Wings was born in Chicago and now lives in San Francisco. She is the author of four other Emma Victor Mysteries: She Came Too Late, She Came by the Book, She Came to the Castro, and She Came in Drag. She is also the author of Divine Victim.

A gala opening of a San Francisco gay archives turns deadly. 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Emma Victor, a lesbian PI living in San Francisco (where else?), finds herself investigating a mysterious homicide. She herself is attacked: does the death have anything to do with the sealed papers she is guarding? Papers from an assassinated supervisor which are so dis-y and dishy that his will forbids their being opened for 60 years? Except for the novelty of a lesbian PI -- which is not so novel any more -- there's not much to recommend this book. It's a dull read (no sex, little violence) with an implausible climax.

the title is the best part 1 out of 5 stars.

I don't even know why I bothered to finish this book. The author seems to believe that short, terse sentences infuse the main character (a real bore of a heroine) with some sort of Chandleresque pithiness. Alas, she just comes across as rather obtuse and annoyingly abrupt. I like the thought of a lesbian P.I., and you can't get a better setting than San Francisco, but this slight and slightly ridiculous mystery was a waste of my time.

Editorial Review:

Protecting the sealed papers of an assassinated gay politician, lesbian P.I. Emma Victor is attacked just before another woman is murdered during the opening of an archive dedicated to the politician's memory. Reprint. AB. K. PW.

This Emma Victor novel is not a drag as Ms. Wings soars 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

A trash TV show offers medical researcher Dr. Rita Huelga several hundred thousand dollars donated to her favorite charity if she will appear and admit that rock superstar Audra Leon was once her lover. Though she would prefer to ignore the Johnny Lever show, a third high school classmate Bevin Crosswell pushes her into going on TV. While the country awaits Rita confession from Beverly Hills, all the mycologist wants to do is go to the Dominican Republic to study the recently discovered forty-million year old mushroom. However, she goes through with the show, which is done in poor taste with Rita going ballistic and beating up Johnny.

After her appearance, death threats begin to arrive. The Lever folks as a show of good will and not ignoring the Jones case hire private Investigator Emma Victor to protect the scientist. Rita objects, but finds herself attracted to her bodyguard and agrees to the plan. Death strikes, but victim turns out to be a romantic rival of Rita's. The woman violently dies from the poison given her. Emma begins to investigate the murder in order to prove her client's innocence and to insure her safety.

The latest Emma Victor mystery, SHE COMES IN DRAG, is a well-written tale that provides readers with a compelling look at the lesbian lifestyle. The who-done-it is entertaining and San Francisco is always fun, but the characters and their interrelationships make the novel. Rita is a very complex protagonist and Emma remains a mix of compassion and steel. Mary Wings talent soars high with this terrific tale.

Lesbian gothic thriller 5 out of 5 stars.

Mary Wings is the author of the witty and entertaining Emma Victor series. With Divine Victim, Wings achieves higher and succeds. It is a dark, haunting story that links, surprisingly, lesbianism and the Roman Catholic faith. Other components of the story include art, art history and cloistered life.
The narrator's girlfriend Maryam inherits a house and a considerable fortune from her aunt Rebecca, on the condition that she has to live in the house one year. In Rebecca's house the narrator comes accross strange objects such as a nun's habit and a box full of red human hair. She become's interested in Rebecca's life and the secret that her house seams to hide. Meanwhile, someone is after the narrator, and it is not only the traumatic memories from her past, of her former lover Ilona and of their nightmarish trip to Italy.

Editorial Review:

The narrator's lesbian lover, Marya, inherits a large, eerie Montana home, and the two women find a house full of unsolved mysteries. By the author of She Came Too Late.
