Sunshine Coast Mystery marks a sad passing 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Menace is a well built mystery set on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. It has plenty of suspense as a stalker terrorizes local women in the small town of Gibson where newcomer Sgt. Eddie Henderson has just taken control of the local RCMP headquarters. The cast is well developed and likeable as only a small town community can be. There is a real sense of place here which readers will want to see developed in future stories.

Unfortunately, protagonist Eddie Henderson will never be as fully developed as her predecessor L.R. Wright's creation Karl Alberg was in her Sechelt, B.C. series. Menace is L.R. Wright's final book as the author died of cancer in 200l. It is a worthy tribute to a fine Canadian writer. Fans will read it with a touch of sadness knowing it is the last of her works and new readers can read backwards and enjoy her earlier novels for the fine writing and loving characterization. I envy them the experience.

Staff Sargeant Karl Alberg, the keen Canadian police detective, is back for his fifth appearance in a nerve-tingling psychological thriller of electric tension between the sexes and parallel plots that finds L.R. Wright at the peak of her Edgar Award-winning powers.

A Touch of Panic is one of the best mysteries I've ever read. L.R. Wright shows her skill to create a tense crime - as well as a tense private world.

Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.

The sixth novel in the series does not disappoint! The various plot lines are fantastic and criss cross and intertwine with each other. The many characters and events keep the story moving at a good pace. The action, while not of blockbuster proportion, never stops until the last page. Wright has managed to paint an interesting (and sometimes quirky) picture of small town life.

Editorial Review:

The acclaimed author of haunting crime novels of the Pacific Northwest reaches new heights of suspense. Four times in his 10-year search for the perfect woman, Gordon Murphy has been wrong. Now, he's set his sights on Cassandra Mitchell--despite the fact that she's living happily with Staff Sergeant Karl Alberg of the RCMP. Murphy is educated, attractive, wealthy--and a killer.

Superb! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful, near perfect crime novel: a beautifully crafted story about murder, and evil that is perhaps worse than murder. The characters are all memorable. You will not find a more sympathetic murderer in all of literature. The author expertly leads you to a conclusion that is both satisfying and disturbing. Top notch, this ranks among my favorite mystery novels. A must read.

A Great Start 4 out of 5 stars.

A friend just recently introduced me to RCMP Staff Sergeant Karl Alberg and the lovely librarian Cassandra Mitchell. I love mysteries so I was disappointed when in the first chapter I learned the identity of the murderer. But the characters are so well crafted that I was hooked. The setting on the sunshine coast of Canada is unique. The plot is not so much of a 'who done it' but rather a 'why'. The motive is doled out a crumb at a time. This first book in the series has me hunting for the others.

Editorial Review:

The Edgar Award-winning novel of hidden secrets, haunting guilt and murder--set in a town near Vancouver on Canada's Sunshine Coast. For no apparent reason a man murders his old acquaintance after only a short chat. HC: Viking.

Good, but not my cup of tea. 3 out of 5 stars.

RCMP sergeant Karl Alberg, out sailing with his lover, Cassandra, spot a body at the bottom of a cliff. Learning the identity of the victim, and finding his killer, requires Alberg to unravel the clues and the complex relationships of the resident in the small town of Sechelt, British Columbia.

For me, this was almost more a character study with a mystery, and Wright did a very good job with characters. They are the epitome of a small town cross-section with a balance of the likeable and unlikable. The character with the least focus was Alberg. But I did read the book for the mystery and it took a long time to get there. The story was well done, but not my preferred style. Comments on the book compare Ms. Wright to Ruth Rendell and P.D. James, neither of whom are my cup of tea. If they are yours, you may enjoy Ms. Wright.

Editorial Review:

Mountie Karl Alberg was expecting a room with a view--what he got was a corpse with a story to tell. When he takes his on-again, off-again "significant other," town librarian Cassandra Mitchell, on a boat trip to a sun-drenched cove on the Pacific coast, a body turns up, and Alberg must sift through a bewildering variey of clues to solve the murder.

Fantastic! 5 out of 5 stars.

The attractive blonde was propped up against the tree, in the rain. Nobody knew who she was or what she was doing there...but no one could miss the fact that her throat had been slashed. RCMP Staff Sergeant Karl Alberg has no clues to go on, and to make matters worse, he finds himself distracted by the local librarian, Cassandra Mitchell, and her flirtation with a visiting actor. A second murder jolts Karl back into focus, and he realises that he must identify the killer before anyone else suffers.

Wright has a gift - she can make you feel like you're right there with the characters, experiencing the events with them. Her characters are so real, and her descriptions of locations and events suck you right in! In this book, she also manages to create a fantastic sense of mystery and suspense. Time will truly fly by while you're reading this book.

this was an excellent book. i enjoyed reading this book so much. it was supsense full if you like mystery books you'll enjoy reading this.

Not a true mystery or suspense but engrossing 4 out of 5 stars.

Since you know who committed the murder and why (as described in the editorial review and very early in the book) there is neither a mystery or very little suspense here. But like her other books in the series, Wright focuses more on character study and the relationships among those affected by the murder rather than lay out a typical who-dunit.

I frankly found the main character, Zoe Strachan, to be the most fascinating feature of the book because her gross inner imperfections contrasted sharply with her outward stunning beauty. The one fault I find with this book, however, is that Zoe is perceived by others and perhaps Wright herself as evil, when in fact many of her actions are driven by acute mental illness. The former has you rooting for the character's demise; the latter has you hoping she gets treatment.

All-in-all, a very good read.

Editorial Review:

In a small village on British Columbia's Sunshine Coast, Zoe Strachan has carefully tucked away a secret past and is living a secluded, private, and happy life. But when her brother arrives on the scene with incriminating childhood diaries--and a blackmail demand--Zoe's fate falls into the hands of Royal Mounted Police Staff Sergeant Karl Allberg, who must use all his wits to unravel the mystery.
