My wife and I have had Marriage Problems, and after reading "Sacred Influence" by the same Author, we now read this Devotional book every day, and are getting a lot of help with our Relationship for our ongoing happiness.
Both my wife and I highly recommend it to other couples!

This book is a great way to spend some time together with your spouse to develop a more God-centered marriage. It has brought new perspectives and views on issues that we wouldn't know otherwise (on our own). Definetly would recomend as a couple's activity. The devotions are short and sweet, perfect for a once-a-week study.

This book is truly a blessing to I and my husband. We are always on the look out for books that will continue to enhance our marriage. We like to be pro-active and not re-active when it comes to enhancing our marriage. This book enlightened us tremdously on how to adjust to the seasons of marriage. It is helping us to do what's necessary to get the best out of each season.

A recipe for disaster. 1 out of 5 stars.

Many years ago I clung to this book while in the middle of a humiliating, searing disintegration of my marriage. My husband had made it clear that he wanted out for almost two years before he finally left. I remained in a church group that told me (ultimately) what I really wanted to hear: I should submit more to my husband (who wanted none of it), pray harder, hold fast and "have faith" while waiting for God to restore my marriage. I had an arsenal of scriptures and prayed on my face nightly, weeping with inconsolable grief and desperation. When he left (as he had wanted to do for so long) I was financially ruined, spiritually bankrupt and physically damaged (two sexually transmitted diseases). I would strongly urge anyone interested in this book to lay down your will (yes, your will) to "save" your marriage and to humbly and earnestly seek the will and heart of Jesus for your personal situation. My life went from the frying pan to the fire to the fires of hell because of my own very religious and ultimately disobedient choices. As Evangelicals, we have turned marriage into an idol of monstrous proportions. We have similar cult-like views of family and marriage as the Mormons...which will hopefully give you sobering pause for prayer and reflection.

Gary Thomas is the last man on earth that should be writing a book for women. Sacred Influence is SO demeaning, I actually had to stop myself from ripping up the pages as I was reading them. Generalizations all over the place - none which even remotely describe me or my experience. This is the kind of book that actually destroys marriages because it doesn't teach you how to get to know and grow with your partner. It places all men in the same category ("this is how men are, therefore X..") and does the same for women ("this is how you are/must be, and if not, you are not godly..") This is not Biblically-based teaching, it is Gary Thomas' impressions of women and what they are like. Don't waste your time or money on this one!

I read this book and found it to contain half truthes and lies. Christopher West is trying to justify his own desire to limit the number of children he has.
There is nowhere in the teachings of the Catholic Church that allows a married couple to use any form of contraceptive. That includes NFP. NFP is not allowed to be used to limit the number of children a Catholic couple can have. It's popular to teach that Catholics couples have a choice when it comes to the size of their family but that's not the truth. It's also popular to claim that John Paul's call for responsible parenting means he was instructing couples to have only a few children. That's not true. It is vastly more responsible to have a large family. That sounds so backwards but it's the truth.

There is a serious shortage of priest in the Catholic Church. That shortage has been caused by the contraceptive mentality of Catholic couples. A large family is a sign that the parents are generous (according to John Paul II). It's that generosity that's learned at home that leads to vocations. Next time you hear people praying for priest ask yourself how many of them have a large number of children. That's like a farmer praying for a good crop but he only planted one or two seeds.

This book contains worksheets that go along with two other books, "Love Busters" & "His Needs, Her Needs." These worksheets help you and your spouse identify for each other the things that kill your love and the things that help your love to grow. They help make you an expert in what will make your spouse fall in love and stay in love with you. The worksheets also help you identify and avoid the things you may unknowingly be doing to ruin and destroy your spouses love for you. There's also a neat worksheet on recreational companionship that helps you and your spouse decide on activities that you would enjoy doing together. This book is highly practical because it is an immediately effective way to figure out what's wrong in your marriage and it gives you solutions to those problems.

Books are highly subjective, but I have always liked John's books. Be aware of all the pompous critics out there who claim that John is 'aloof' or not quite 'in touch'. I know that God has used his writing in wonderful ways for myself, and MANY that I know. And that should be testament to itself. Always check everything that you read against or compared to the Scriptures, but read his book for yourself before deciding to take the 'advice' of the raters!

This book gave me brilliant insight into freindships and relationship building. It is a real privaledge to be able to learn from Alan McGinnis the keys to good frindships. These are tried and proved priciples and I thought the value placed on true fiendship and the practical examples were inspiring and helpful.
Using Jesus was not over the top as it gave us insight into someone most people know about and and an awesome example of how to live the ultimate life.
A real help to thoses who feel the need for richer frienships in this increasingly lonely world.

I've read this book years ago and I've been recently looking for a new book on the subject being that I'm in a new country and may be here for some years. (I've moved from all of my old friends) Anyways, there's this reviewer Hansen (something or other) who's given this book a 1 star. He's given the book a pretty accurate review. It is written from a Christian perspective and it just seems like light weight self help fluff.

When compared with other Christian dating books this author's perspective seems secular. He mentions the fundamental importance of a personal relationship with God, and then focuses on practical ways of learning healthy dating patterns. The book is not directed at teenagers but adults who are either not dating or in a dating rut. He is a professional councilor and this book systematically addresses common psychological pitfalls involved with dating.

While some Christians might be disturbed with the idea of dating around, he emphasizes the importance of actively pursuing members of the opposite sex. This is not worldly dating; in his words "Dating is an activity where you do fun, meaningful things with interesting people." I like the way he emphasize the importance of casual dating as a way to strengthen one's dating muscle. "Dating is not about marriage!" I often fall into the trap of requiring an interesting person to pass my large list of internal marriage requirements before I'll think of asking her out to do something. This would be fine if I had a strong dating muscle, but my weak dating muscle leaves me feeling over-anxious and under-prepaired in the rare event I find a "worthy" candidate.

Of the half dozen dating books I've read this one is the most useful. In fact--I'm rereading it.
