eye-opening, couldn't put it down; everyone should read this book. 5 out of 5 stars.

Wild Swans is an amazing, eye-opening look at China's past and reveals much about why China is the country it is today. I spend about 6 weeks in China (in manufacturing) per year, yet never began to understand what some of the people I work with with have been thru until I read this book. People my parents age being tortured, being starved, seeing arbitrary violence and murder of their children, their families, entire villages. Compared to Mao, Hitler was a nice guy. So few people seem to know or care about the needless starvation, violence & sadistic political game-playing that was inflicted on China by it's own government resulting in deaths of millions of people. I couldn't put this book down. Jung interweaves her family's history with the history of the country in a matter of fact way, documenting China as I have never seen it before. This is a must read.

Lapdog/Houseboy For The Robber Barons 1 out of 5 stars.

Intellectual, yet robber-baron partisan. I was horrified by Greenspan's book. He views 'income disparity' as the difference in income between skilled and unskilled labor. What the fu is he writing about?! He thinks that the supply of skilled labor in this county is artificially low. His solution to our problems would be to lower incomes for skilled labor. As an economist, he should know that only the incomes of MDs have kept up with inflation since at least 1972.

I would expect an economist to advocate legislation that would bolster free enterprise rather than foster a caste system. We need laws to discourage monopolist behavior and the milking of corporations by opportunist CEOs. Greenspan never addressed the corruption and failed to write a word regarding the crimes of big business.

Finally, Greenspan favors big coal, big nuclear, et al. rather than solar or wind power. I gather that his robber-baron buddies can not corner those markets.

The whole book needs salt 2 out of 5 stars.

What could have been an interesting book about an interesting experience in an interesting city ended up being boring because it lacked in depth and character development. Flinn reports on her experience in a fairly predictable way and in exceptionally short chapters - tell the story of a lesson, pepper it with an anecdote about a classmate, then relate it to a story about the boyfriend or the City. End with a complicated French recipe that no one is ever going to make. The book is a string of these predictable vignettes, none of which is particularly exciting because there is little lead up - if the triumph over puff pastry had a deeper psychological significance then it would be interesting. Instead, the triumph over puff pastry was because, predictably, she practiced at home. Woo hoo!

I ended up putting the book down 3/4 of the way through, realizing I was trudging through not caring about any of the characters and really wishing she explored one or two relationships in depth - her relationship with herself and a cooking teacher, for example. Flinn is frequently criticized for not using enough salt in her sauces, a simple device for bringing out the flavor in the ingredients. In my opinion, this whole book needs salt.

A gift to all generations of Americans who follow 5 out of 5 stars.

With so many reviews sometimes I hesitate to add one more. This is a gift, a treasure to all Americans who come after us. All good stories do not necessarily have the benefit of good story tellers and vice versa. I believe this is THE reason this book is so powerful. L&C is a tale of the stars aligning at exactly the right moment with precisely the right cast there to undertake the adventure. Behind it all is the vision of Jefferson who saw with perfect clarity what needed to be done (the La. Purchase) and the immediate need to explore it and open it up to the boundless energies of those who would make it home. With carping, second-guessing New England Federalists at his heels he selected the man to lead the expedition. He equipped Lewis with the necessary resources, intellectual and material to execute his bold plan. Lewis selected an uncanny compliment to co-lead the venture and the rest, as they say, is history. This cannot be over recommended and should be mandatory reading for all citizens before high school graduation.

In 1803 President Thomas Jefferson selected his personal secretary, Captain Meriwether Lewis, to lead a voyage up the Missouri River, across the forbidding Rockies, and -- by way of the Snake and mighty Columbia -- down to the Pacific Ocean. Lewis and his partner, Captain William Clark, endured incredible hardships and witnessed astounding sights. With great perseverance, they worked their way into an unexplored West and when they returned two years later, they had long since been given up for dead.
