Financial Freedom 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this book cover to cover in a weekend. I now think about money differently than I had in the past. I have read many of Suze Ormon's and David Bach's books and they have helped to educate me, but Rich Dad, Poor Dad has changed my view of finances forever. Poor people work for money. Rich people make their money work for them. Poor people pay too many taxes, interest to the bank and make their employers rich. Rich people find tax loopholes, avoid borrowing money and work for themselves. It all makes sense to me now. I am paying off my rental properties, incorporating my rental business and plan to be semi-retired by age 55 so that I live primarily on the rent and only work part-time to supplement my income. This book has helped me to focus, plan for the future and helped me steer out of debt and closer to retirement. Paying for your child's education is important, but giving them a 2 bedroom, 1 bath house when they graduate from college is equally important. Make them pay you what they would have paid in rent and when the amount is sufficient, allow them to sell the house and buy a bigger one with the money they have paid you. Bypass the bank and interest completely. Let your child be the first generation to break free from mortgage "slavery." Demand that they do the same for your grandchildren and keep the ball rolling.

"Early to bed, early to rise, work like hell and advertise!"

These words of fatherly advice helped shape Ted Turner's remarkable life, but they only begin to explain the colorful, energetic, and unique style that has made Ted into one of the most amazing personalities of our time. Along the way - among his numerous accomplishments -- Ted became one of the richest men in the world, the largest land owner in the United States, revolutionized the television business with the creation of TBS and CNN, became a champion sailor and winner of the America's Cup, and took home a World Series championship trophy in 1995 as owner of the Atlanta Braves.
An innovative entrepreneur, outspoken nonconformist, and groundbreaking philanthropist, Ted Turner is truly a living legend, and now, for the first time, he reveals his personal story. From his difficult childhood to the successful launch of his media empire to the catastrophic AOL/Time Warner deal, Turner spares no details or feelings and takes the reader along on a wild and sometimes bumpy ride.
You'll also hear Ted's personal take on how we can save the world...share his experiences in the dugout on the day when he appointed himself as manager of the Atlanta Braves....learn how he almost lost his life in the 1979 Fastnet sailing race (but came out the winner)...and discover surprising details about his dealings with Fidel Castro, Mikhail Gorbachev, Jimmy Carter, Bill Gates, Jack Welch, Warren Buffett, and many more of the most influential people of the past half century.
Ted also doesn't shrink from the darker and more intimate details of his life. With his usual frankness, he discusses a childhood of loneliness (he was left at a boarding school by his parents at the tender age of four), and the emotional impact of devastating losses (Ted's beloved sister died at seventeen and his hard-charging father committed suicide when Ted was still in his early twenties). Turner is also forthcoming about his marriages, including the one to Oscar-winning actress, Jane Fonda.
Along the way, Ted's friends, colleagues, and family are equally revealing in their unique "Ted Stories" which are peppered throughout the book. Jane Fonda, especially, provides intriguing insights into Ted's inner drive and character.
In this audio edition CALL ME TED, you'll hear Ted Turner's distinctive voice as he tells his story. Always forthright, he tells you what makes him tick and what ticks him off, and delivers an honest account of what he's all about. Inspiring and entertaining, CALL ME TED sheds new light on one of the greatest visionaries of our time.

Editorial Review:

For a critical element of American society, including many of its wealthiest and most powerful, there seems to be no limit today on what "enough" entails.

The excesses are most starkly visible in the continuing crisis in banking and investment, and even in the two enormous government-sponsored (but publicly owned) mortgage lenders, to say nothing of the billion-dollar-plus annual paychecks that top hedge-fund managers draw down and the excessive compensation paid to CEOs, regardless of  performance.

Throughout his legendary career, John Bogle—founder of the Vanguard mutual fund group, and creator of the first index mutual fund—has helped investors build wealth the right way and led a tireless campaign to restore common sense to the investment world. Along the way, he’s seen how destructive an obsession with financial success can be. Now, with Enough, he puts this dilemma in perspective.

Bogle offers his unparalleled insights on money, on the values we should emulate in our business and professional callings, and on what we should consider as the true treasures in our lives. By explaining what "enough" truly is, he demonstrates how close everyone can be to having it.

Editorial Review:

It was wonderful to be young and working on Wall Street in the 1980s: never had so many twenty-four-year-olds made so much money in so little time.

In this shrewd and wickedly funny audiobook, Michael Lewis describes an astonishing era and his own rake’s progress through a powerful investment bank. From an unlikely beginning (art history at Princeton?) he rose in two short years from Salomon Brothers trainee to Geek (the lowest form of life on the trading floor) to Big Swinging Dick–a bond salesman who could turn over millions of dollars’ worth of doubtful bonds with just one call.

A born storyteller, Michael Lewis shows us how things really worked on Wall Street. The bond traders, wearing greed and ambition as badges of honor, might well have swaggered straight from the pages of Bonfire of the Vanities. But for all their outrageous behavior, they were in fact presiding over enormous changes in the world economy. Lewis’s job was to transfer money, in the form of bonds, from those outside American who saved to those inside America who consumed. In doing so, he generated tens of millions of dollars for Salomon Brothers, and earned for himself a ringside seat on the greatest financial spectacle of the decade: the leveraging of America.

Getting to yes 5 out of 5 stars.

Required reading in most negotiation classes I am told by my professor at UNH. I think it's an excellent book, we use two, this and "Bargaining for Advantage" by Richard Shell. I personally like the shell book better as it's more methodical which my brain processes more easily. Having said that, this book is also very good.

Editorial Review:

Getting to Yes is a straightorward, universally applicable method for negotiating personal and professional disputes without getting taken -- and without getting angry.

It offers a concise, step-by-step, proven strategy for coming to mutually acceptable agreements in every sort of conflict -- whether it involves parents and children, neighbors, bosses and employees, customers or corporations, tenants or diplomats. Based on the work of Harvard Negotiation Project, a group that deal continually with all levels of negotiations and conflict resolutions from domestic to business to international, Getting to Yes tells you how to:

  • Separate the people from the problem
  • Focus on interests, not positions
  • Work together to create opinions that will satisfy both parties
  • negotiate successfully with people who are more powerful, refuse to play by the rules, or resort to "dirty tricks"

Easy Read: Important Topic 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book and worth reading if you work in a team setting. It applies to any organization. The Five Dysfunctions was given to me by business associate. I read it and found the information very useful, especially in a leadership setting. I subsequently purchased copies for the Leadership Team. Everyone read it without the normal complaints. In fact, several said it was one of the easiest business books they have ever read. We used the content for an offsite discussion. It opened up a lot of "unsaids" and helped our team work towards a more productive and effective working relationship. Lencioni hits the nail on the head to start with Trust (the first Dysfunction). He accurately explains that this area must be addressed first.

I especially like the Team Assessment on pages 192 and 193 (15 easy to fill out questions). The book is worth it for this tool alone. Our initial Team Assessment did not score as well as I had hoped - it was a much needed wake up call. After a lot of discussion and effort, we have made progress by working on the 5 Dysfunctions.

Six months later, we have improved our score. More important, we have improved our ability to function well as a team. The Five Dysfunctions is a useful catalyst to help improve team effectiveness but you have to be willing to work on it - not in one meeting, in every meeting. The book provides a common language that facilitates communication and provides five simple areas to focus on.

    Editorial Review:

After her first two weeks observing the problems at DecisionTech, Kathryn Petersen, its new CEO, had more than a few moments when she wondered if she should have taken the job. But Kathryn knew there was little chance she would have turned it down. After all, retirement made her antsy, and nothing excited her more than a challenge. What she could not have known when she accepted the job, however, was just how dysfunctional her team was, and how team members would challenge her in ways no one ever had before.

In The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, Patrick Lencioni once again offers a leadership fable that is as enthralling and instructive as his first two bestselling books, The Five Temptations of a CEO and The Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive. This time, he turns his keen intellect and storytelling power to the fascinating, complex world of teams.

    Editorial Review:

A tribe is any group of people, large or small, who are connected to one another, a leader, and an idea. For millions of years, humans have joined tribes, be they religious, ethnic, political, or even musical (think of the Deadheads). It’s our nature. Now the Internet has eliminated the barriers of geography, cost, and time. All those blogs and social networking sites are helping existing tribes get bigger and enabling new tribes to be born—groups of ten or ten million who care about a political campaign, or a new way to fight global warming.

Who is going to lead all these tribes? The Web can do amazing things, but it can’t provide leadership. That still has to come from individuals—people just like you who have passion about something. Anyone who wants to make a difference now has the tools at their fingertips.

If you think leadership is for other people, think again—leaders come in surprising packages. Ignore an opportunity to lead and you risk turning into a “sheepwalker”—someone who fights to protect the status quo at all costs, never asking if obedience is doing you (or your organization) any good. Sheepwalkers don’t do very well these days.

Tribes will make you think (really think) about the opportunities for leading your fellow employees, customers, investors, believers, hobbyists, readers. . . . It's not easy, but it's easier than you probably imagine.

The Book Your Friends Need to Read 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Easy to understand, EVERYONE needs to read this book. Once again, Sowell exposes the fallacies (as he calls them) of many social and economic perceptions pushed by the Left. His points are simple and extremely relevant, backed up by several dozen factual references for each chapter. Perfect gift for your friends who refuse to concede the failures of Big Government social policies! This book should be a staple in your library.

This guy is dead on. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Sowell does not worry about being politically correct. This guy cuts to the chase like no one else.

Have your expectations set correctly - this is a business book about economics, it's not a simple read.

Classic Sowell. Excellent insight, excellent book. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Sowell offers invaluable insight into what we know or, more importantly, what we think we know about economics. Things aren't always as they seem and certainly aren't always as we are led to believe.

Anyone who has ever read Sowell (books or columns) knows that he is a talented writer and cuts quickly to the point while methodically supporting it with overwhelming evidence. The larger purpose of this book is to help readers become more critical thinkers rather than mindless consumers of information and ultimately to have the courage to turn inward when seeking solutions.

I particularly enjoyed the Income & Third World chapters. Either alone makes the book well worth your time.

    Editorial Review:

In this lively primer, Thomas Sowell exposes some of the most popular fallacies about economic issues, including many that are widely disseminated in the media and by politicians.
