Absolutely fantastic 5 out of 5 stars.

This has become a very famous book and it deserves to be. It is certainly the type that has you lending it to all your friends and telling them about which pieces are your favorites. I love reading about his family and am a big fan of sister Amy so whenever there's a mention of her I get excited. So many of these stories are hilarious but there are also others that are incredibly sad. Ashes is an unforgettable read. The last selection, Naked, also has some very memorable moments, but the collection as a whole is extremely satisfying. Lots of reviewers make it seem as though reading the book is one marathon of comedy, but I find that a lot of his writing also has really interesting things to say about society and the way people treat others. A lot of the pieces seem to have pain in them but are presented in a generally light and humorous way. A wonderful book from a very talented writer.

Editorial Review:

Naked is a riotous compilation of stories performed by David and Amy Sedaris. Publishers Weekly praised this program's "smashing use of the audio as a unique entertainment medium" and called the performances "highly likeable and spirited throughout." They also named it one of "the best of the best" tapes of the year, and deemed it worthy of "multiple listens."

Hilarious! The new stories are a welcome addition! 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I read the original version of this collection a few years ago and really enjoyed it so I jumped at the chance of reading the stories again and the new additional stories! The new stories are definitely a welcome addition!

Of the original stories, The SantaLand Diaries starts the collection off on a hilarious note. You get to read bout the inner workings of being a department store Christmas elf. The crazy santas, elves and customers! Season's Greetings to Our Friends and Family!!! starts off innocently enough as a family holiday letter and quickly takes a turn for the hilariously insane, like a lot of Sedaris's stories.

Of the new stories, Jesus Shaves is by far my favorite. It had me crying from laughing so hard. I don't want to give anything away, so just trust me, it's hilarious. Six to Eight Black Men was also hilarious along the same line. Definitely learned things I didn't know about how other countries celebrate to holidays.

I wasn't totally fond of The Monster Mash, about a trip to a medical examiner's office, it spoke to my weak stomach and my stomach said no thank you. But it still had it's funny moments.

All in all this is a hilarious holiday collection and the new stories are a welcome addition helping add additional holidays to this collection.

Editorial Review:

David Sedaris's beloved holiday collection is new again with six more pieces, including a never before published story. Along with such favoritesas the diaries of a Macy's elf and the annals of two very competitive families, are Sedaris's tales of tardy trick-or-treaters ("Us and Them"); the difficulties of explaining the Easter Bunny to the French ("Jesus Shaves"); what to do when you've been locked out in a snowstorm ("Let It Snow"); the puzzling Christmas traditions of other nations ("Six to Eight Black Men"); what Halloween at the medical examiner's looks like ("The Monster Mash"); and a barnyard secret Santa scheme gone awry ("Cow and Turkey").

No matter what your favorite holiday, you won't want to miss celebrating it with the author who has been called "one of the funniest writers alive" (Economist).

This book is a truly enjoyable read. 5 out of 5 stars.

If you like the dry wit of David Sedaris you will love this book. Even if you don't know who he is, once you have read the first page you will probably love this book.

Seeing the world through the author's eyes for a while helps us to remember the little absurdities we experience every day and, somehow, cherish them for a moment rather than let them drive us stark, raving, looney.

Thank you Mr. Sedaris, for reminding us to treasure even the stranger moments that make up the life of a human being.

Dress Your Family in Cords or enim 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is hysterical! Probably one of his best works if not the best.If you like Sedaris at all then you must read this (even though it's not his latest). It's even funny a second time around, the semi biographical short stories don't get dated.

Editorial Review:

No one renders the pathos, chaos, and impossible variety of daily encounters like David Sedaris. On every subject, he is bruisingly painful and tenderly affectionate. Sedaris is unique in American writing, and these readings of his own work are highly skilled performances. This new collection will be eagerly anticipated by his ever-growing crowd of devoted fans.

Your library has 10 copies of this book--guarenteed! 1 out of 5 stars.

If you must: I suggest your local library. That, or you could buy it used. They are currently selling used copies of the hard back for one cent.

That's about all it's worth. Her information is fair, but her attitude is horrible. She insults every facet of the very audience that is asking her for help.

It gets folks fired up, doesn't it? 4 out of 5 stars.

My punctuation is definitely not perfect, but I enjoyed "Eats, Shoots & Leaves" a lot because I too am frustrated by the insanity that has writers putting an apostrophe before the "s" in any word ending in that letter! Drives me batty! I believe that the author has toungue planted firmly in cheek and found myself laughing all the way through her book. I am glad that even in punctuation, humor can be found.

It also heightened my awareness of "writing right" and made me want to do a better job of using reference guides to understand why things are done as they are, instead of just going by the seat of my pants and "I think it looks right, oh I'll just throw in some more commas."

Editorial Review:

A New York Times Bestseller

In 2002 Lynne Truss presented a well-received BBC Radio 4 series about punctuation which led to the writing of Eats, Shoots & Leaves. The book became a runaway success in the UK, hitting number one on the bestseller lists and prompting extraordinary headlines such as "Grammar Book Tops Bestseller List" (BBC News). With over a half million copies in print in England, Truss is ready to rally the troops on this side of the pond with her rousing cry, "Sticklers unite!"

Editorial Review:

According to The Waiter, eighty percent of customers are nice people just looking for something to eat. The remaining twenty percent, however, are socially maladjusted psychopaths. WAITER RANT offers the server’s unique point of view, replete with tales of customer stupidity, arrogant misbehavior, and unseen bits of human grace transpiring in the most unlikely places. Through outrageous stories, The Waiter reveals the secrets to getting good service, proper tipping etiquette, and how to keep him from spitting in your food. The Waiter also shares his ongoing struggle, at age thirty-eight, to figure out if he can finally leave the first job at which he’s really thrived.

"The other shoe finally drops. The front-of-the-house version of Kitchen Confidential; a painfully funny, excruciatingly true-life account of the waiter’s life. As useful as it is entertaining. You will never look at your waiter the same way again–and will never tip less than 20%." --Anthony Bourdain, author of Kitchen Confidential
"I really enjoyed WAITER RANT. The book is engaging and funny, a story told from my polar opposite perspective. I will now do my best to act better as a Chef -- and I dare say, I’ll never be rude to a waiter again, as long as I live."--John DeLucie, Chef of The Waverly Inn

Editorial Review:

Originally drawn to the game by his father, Carl Hiaasen wisely quit golfing in 1973. But some ambitions refuse to die, and as the years and memories of shanked 7-irons faded, it dawned on Carl that there might be one thing in life he could do better in middle age than he could as a youth. So gradually he ventured back to the dreaded driving range, this time as the father of a five-year-old son and also as a grandfather.

What possesses a man to return in midlife to a game at which he d never excelled in his prime, and which in fact had dealt him mostly failure, angst and exasperation? Here s why I did it: I m one sick bastard. And thus we have Carl s foray into a world of baffling titanium technology, high-priced golf gurus, bizarre infomercial gimmicks and the mind-bending phenomenon of Tiger Woods; a maddening universe of hooks and slices where Carl ultimately and foolishly agrees to compete in a country-club tournament against players who can actually hit the ball. That s the secret of the sport s infernal seduction, he writes. It surrenders just enough good shots to let you talk yourself out of quitting.

Hiaasen s chronicle of his shaky return to this bedeviling pastime and the ensuing demolition of his self-esteem culminating with the savage 45-hole tournament will have you rolling with laughter. Yet the bittersweet memories of playing with his own father and the glow he feels when watching his own young son belt the ball down the fairway will also touch your heart. Forget Tiger, Phil and Ernie. If you want to understand the true lure of golf, turn to Carl Hiaasen, who offers an extraordinary audiobook for the ordinary hacker.

Reminds me of why I used to like the Daily Show 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is hilarious satire, and it reminds me of why I used to love the Daily Show. The show always did a great job of satirizing current events, and this book picks up where the show left off, satirizing things that don't fall so neatly into the "current events" category. It is probably funnier if you have at least some knowledge of American and World history, because you just won't get some of the jokes if you don't. Also, I'd like to add that you can enjoy this book even if you aren't a left-leaner, because it was written before the 2004 election - in other words, before Jon Stewart sold out his comedic integrity for partisanship and changed his show from picking on America to picking on Republicans.

Editorial Review:

Amazon.com Exclusive Content Jon Stewart on America (The Book) Sure, we could write a pithy blurb telling you all about America (The Book), by Jon Stewart and the writers of The Daily Show, but it's much easier--and funnier--to let Jon Stewart tell you all about this irreverent book himself. Laughed the whole time. Loved the book. He says it was great. Buy it if you like the outdoors and the mishaps that can happen.

You just must read this book for getting your sides split. 5 out of 5 stars.

These books by McManus are the best for making you remember what it was like growing up when kids were real kids. As you read, the world melts away and entertains you as if you were really there.

Not what I expected. 1 out of 5 stars.

I am sorry I bought it. I couldn't get past the first 2 stories. I was expecting something on the order of Bill Heavey's "If You Didn't Bring Jerky, What Did I Just Eat?" Heavey's book at least has plausible content.

laugh out loud funny 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the first audio book I have gotten from this author. I made a deal with my self to listen to audio books only while driving. I started laughing so hard I had to pull the car over so I wouldn't wreck the car. It should come with a warning DANGER LAUGHING AND DRIVING COULD WRECK THE CAR.
surprisingly, My husband listened to this one and liked it. Kerplunk may of been my first book but it won't be my last. I'll just have to learn how to drive and laugh out loud.

Editorial Review:

With her disarming, intimate, completely accessible voice, and dry sense of humor, Nora Ephron shares with us her ups and downs in I Feel Bad About My Neck, a candid, hilarious look at women who are getting older and dealing with the tribulations of maintenance, menopause, empty nests, and life itself.
The woman who brought us When Harry Met Sally . . . discusses everything–from how much she hates her purse to how much time she spends attempting to stop the clock: the hair dye, the treadmill, the lotions and creams that promise to slow the aging process but never do. Oh, and she can’t stand the way her neck looks. But her dermatologist tells her there’s no quick fix for that.
Ephron chronicles her life, but mostly she speaks frankly and uproariously about life as a woman of a certain age.
Utterly courageous, wickedly funny, and unexpectedly moving in its truth telling, I Feel Bad About My Neck is an audiobook of wisdom, advice, and laugh-out-loud moments, a scrumptious, irresistible treat.

Interesting stories, but crummy chapter introductions 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The Darwin Awards are dedicated to those who "do a service to humanity by removing themselves from the gene pool," that is those who kill themselves (or at least try to) in a gloriously shining example of blatant stupidity. This is the fourth book produced in celebration of such stupidity. Now, I must say right off that I did not read the print edition of the book, but listened to the audiobook, so some of what I have to say may not apply to other editions of the book.

Overall, I found the stories to be interesting. I liked how the readers tried to accent their voices to go along with the stories - affecting an Australian accent when discussing an Australian winner, or a Romanian accent when discussing a Romanian winner, and so forth. The stories were nice and short, which made them great for car rides of any length.

What I didn't like was the chapter introductions which discussed subjects such as DNA, the aquatic ape theory, AIDS, and so forth. These sections were a mixed bag - some were interesting, and some boring - but, none of them had anything to do with the Darwin Awards. I would rather that the creators of this book had slipped in stories of famous deaths in history, or something having ANYTHING to do with the Darwin Awards. They were too long, too boring, and jarringly out of step with subject of the book.

So, while this is a good audiobook with some great Darwin Award stories, it is poorly constructed, damaging the listening experience. On the whole, I give this audiobook an extremely guarded recommendation.

Editorial Review:

A fourth installment of stories honoring those who continue to improve our gene pool by removing themselves from it in a sublimely idiotic fashion! To be released in the fall of 2006 simultaneously with The Darwin Awards motion picture, starring Winona Ryder and Joseph Fiennes! The author has appeared in USA Today, Entertainment Weekly, The (NY) Daily News, Boston Herald, Publisher Weekly, BookPage and CNN.com.
