I love this book! It is sooo amazing. It is very true. I have a dream and so do you. If you let it, this book can change your life. I highly reccomend it.

An Insightful, Delightful, and Quick Read 5 out of 5 stars.

This parable is about a person, 'Ordinary' who decides to leave his hometown of 'Familiar' to follow his dream. He is presented with many obstacles, which anybody pursuing their dream will encounter, and the book is written in an easy-to-follow and quick-to-read style.

Though the author writes from a Christian perspective, the only time this is apparent is for a little while mid-way through the book. Generally speaking, you can replace 'God' with any other universal energy that resonates with you and the words will still feel right... because having dreams is universal to all people.

A friend recommended this book to me at a pivotal time in my life... a time when I am pursuing my dream to help people grow spiritually. I am grateful to have found it when I did, and I am sure that one of you reading this right now will also find it to be the right book at the right time in your life.

Editorial Review:

Bestselling author Bruce Wilkinson shows how to identify and overcome the obstacles that keep millions from living the life they were created for. He begins with a compelling modern-day parable about Ordinary, who dares to leave the Land of Familiar to pursue his Big Dream. With the help of the Dream Giver, Ordinary begins the hardest and most rewarding journey of his life. Wilkinson gives readers practical, biblical keys to fulfilling their own dream, revealing that there's no limit to what God can accomplish when we choose to pursue the dreams He gives us for His honor.

Editorial Review:

Even well-versed Biblical scholars might be perplexed if asked about Jabez, a little-known man listed in 1 Chronicles, chapter 4. Yet his simple petition is the cornerstone of The Prayer of Jabez and has become a call to live a more "blessed life" for countless readers.

The prayer is a simple one: "And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, 'Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain.' So God granted him what he requested."

In an era where many Christians shy away from anything that smacks of "name it and claim it," author Bruce Wilkinson alleviates misgivings by putting the prayer into perspective. Wilkinson, founder and president of Walk thru the Bible Ministries and a popular speaker for Promise Keepers, writes in a persuasive, conversational style that will woo even the most cynical reader. He has used the Jabez prayer for more than 30 years, and testifies enthusiastically to the changes it has wrought in his own life. Wilkinson challenges readers to recite the Jabez prayer every morning and keep a record of the changes that occur. The power, he emphasizes, is not in the prayer itself, but "rather, the power is in what you believe will happen as a result of the prayer, and the action you take." Wilkinson makes a convincing case. --Cindy Crosby

Editorial Review:

No one said it would be easy. In the first installment of his BreakThrough series, Dr. Bruce H. Wilkinson urged Christians to find the abundant life through following a simple prayer. In Secrets of the Vine, his follow-up to the bestselling The Prayer of Jabez, the president of Walk thru the Bible Ministries explores compelling images from Bible verse John 15 in support of his message that asking for God's blessings may result in suffering and difficult circumstances. Through Jesus' symbolic portrayal of himself as the vine, the Father as vinedresser, and his followers as the branches, Wilkinson believes that Christians can better understand God's methods for ensuring personal fulfillment, and find a closer walk with him.

Grapes need pruning--and so do Christians, Wilkinson writes. God's "pruning" is painful, but Wilkinson argues that this pruning away of "self" is necessary to gain desirable results. He notes, "Pruning will intensify as God's shears cut closer to the core of who you are." Wilkinson urges Christians not to confuse "pruning" with "discipline," and offers a helpful chart to distinguish between the two. He discusses four levels of fruit bearing, from "no fruit" to "much fruit," and the connection between God's pruning and an abundant harvest.

Wilkinson's warm, personable writing style helps him come across as a confidant and mentor. Even though he admits, "I assure you that I possess no special knowledge in these matters," millions of readers seem to think he does. He lays down the challenge: "If you don't know and apply Jesus's vineyard teachings, you'll never experience the abundant life you long for. There is simply no other way." Christians aspiring to maturity in their spiritual lives will likely sit up and take notice. --Cindy Crosby

Finding a lost treasure 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was given this book as a Christmas gift back in 1987. Somewhere down the line I lost it while traveling. I have been trying for years to obtain another copy and finally, because of Amazon, I have. This book is what really got me diligently studying the bible and sparked my growth in my walk with Christ. I like the structure of the book and the small commentaries before each day's lesson. The publisher should really consider publishing this book again.

Since I was given this book I have brought several one year bibles for people, they are great gifts. The value of such a gift is beyond measure.

Bruce Wilkinson spent thirty years studying and praying the prayer of Jabez. The original manuscript was over three hundred pages long. When The Prayer of Jabez was released in the spring of 2000, it had been culled down to 96 pages. It was originally intended as a gift from Bruce to the attendees of the 2000 National Day of Prayer. Now in 2005, the fifth anniversary of the release of the original Prayer of Jabez, the release of Beyond Jabez will be more like the book Bruce Wilkinson originally intended to write—a book with more teaching, stories of God’s blessings, and more application of what God intended of us in petitioning Him.

Catchy Title Doesn't Measure Up 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have finished checking out "A Life God Rewards". There are several issues. I will summarize all the feedback I received....

According to "A Life God Rewards" you are not working for your salvation but for how big your mansion will be in heaven. It is just another form of legalism that Paul fought in his day. It is an invention of law not a work of God's grace.

One reader gave an example of his two sisters. One was more interested in getting "rewards" from her parents, and the other could care less, as she was only there to love her parents. Which one of these sisters found favor? He made a point that the "Jones" do not live in the Kingdom of Heaven, so that you won't have the keep up with them.

True Christian focus is love, and the joy of being in His presence; not getting His "presents". We are not out to serve ourselves but to help others come to the same saving faith and future we have in the Savior. Our help is motivated by love not rewards. We "so love" because God "so loved". Judas's green eyed, out-to-help-himself attitude about Jesus' mission led him to betray the Savior for a foolish reward. He cared about the purse strings... JN 12:6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.

The Bible teaches to "love your neighbor as yourself" not "love your neighbor to reward yourself". The Bible teaches we "ought to lay down our lives for our brothers" not for our benefit. A life God rewards fosters a spirit of greed instead of a spirit of love and giving, and knowing God's grace. If refocuses on the selfish instead of selfless; a merit system about what I can achieve to better my eternity instead of how many people I can reach for Christ.

Satan encourages us to think "who is the greatest" when God's word says "we have all fallen short". When the Twelve argued about this point Jesus said MK 9:35... "If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all."

We must remember that our Lord and God alone is worthy to receive glory and honor and power and worship, and the "crowns" we possess will be laid before His throne because He gave us our very being in first place... REV 4:9-11 Paul shows us that these crowns are our glory and joy in the presence of our Lord Jesus. They are the very brothers and sisters whom we shared the gospel, witnessed, and had played part in leading to the Lord! Can you really think of anything more wonderful then to have someone in heaven come up to you and thank you for planting a seed that helped them down the path to salvation!?!? 1TH 2:19 For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you? 20 Indeed, you are our glory and joy. (PHP 4:1)... The Philippians were Paul's present joy as he received favorable reports of their spiritual growth, and their presence with Christ at his return would be his future crown when Christ comes to reward his servants.

God alone is worthy because all our righteous acts are like filthy rags...
ISA 64:6 All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.

God alone is worthy because every inclination of our heart is evil from childhood....
GE 8:20 Then Noah built an altar to the LORD and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it. 21 The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: "Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood.

Those lulled into a rewards mentality must consider the parable of the laborers. (MT 20:9-15) Those hired at the end of the day received the same pay as those who started at the beginning of the day. Jesus has the right to do what He wants, it is not unfair, "or are you envious because God is so generous?" (MT 20:15).

The "Johnny-come-lately" thief on the cross will not be in a lesser place in heaven... He will be with Jesus! LK 23:43 Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise." His gratitude for inheriting what he did not deserve will be the same gratitude of all the saints for what they did not deserve.

The opportunity to reign with Christ was given through Christ's death not our works. The Lamb has made the ransomed into a "kingdom" and made them "priests". Christians "will reign on the earth" because they have been given "kingly authority" through his death. REV 5:9-10 And they sang a new song: "You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. REV 5:10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth."

The point of these next verses is to set your heart attitude on things above that will last forever and not on the earth that will fade away. It is not a rewards / works doctrine but rather the only smart thing to focus on are things that will last..

PHP 1:21-24 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.

MT 6:19 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

COL 3:1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

His Grace expressed in kindness through all eternity to "all" the saints... not some more than others! We were created to do good works God prepared in advance! EPH 2:7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Someone should write a book on prayer or submission and see how popular these titles will be in todays society. A Life God Rewards is nothing more than a catchy title with a twisted theme. God commands us to be noble and test everything with the Scriptures to see if it is true.. Acts 17:11 Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

This one does not check out.

Editorial Review:

In this book, you're going to discover that God's son Jesus revealed a direct link between what you do today and what you will experience after you die. Astoundingly, the majority of spiritual seekers around the world -- including millions who follow Jesus -- seem to have missed what He said. Could you be one? If so, your picture of the future is missing about a billion stars. Author Bruce Wilkinson shows you what Jesus said about God's plan to reward you in eternity for what you do for Him today. What you'll discover will unlock the mystery of God's power, plan and will for your life. And you'll begin to live with the unshakable certainty that what you do today matters ... forever!

Excellent content, lacks continuity 3 out of 5 stars.
25 of 27 people found this review helpful.

I wrote a glowing review of the Prayer of Jabez on December 13, 2000. I gave it five stars and still consider it to be one of the best books on how to pray. I was looking forward to the Prayer of Jabez Bible Study. I could hardly wait until it was published. Now, I have taught through the Bible Study with a small group at my church. I'm ready now to review it for you.

I found the study to have some excellent content. Christians need to know the information contained in this study. However, I found that the study lack continuity (thus my three star rating). The study states that you can do the study without reading through the Prayer of Jabez at the same time. Several members of our group took that advice. I think it was detrimental to their study. The book flows well and keeps you connected. The study does not flow as well, is spread over four weeks, and doesn't keep you connected to the weekly theme very well. I would definitely advise using the book with the study.

One difficult part of the study is that there is no answer key. Some of the Scripture references related to the questions did not seem to connect at all. I even have the reprinted editions that Multnomah re-released after fixing the mistakes in the first printing. I also used the leader's guide for the study. The leader's guide doesn't reveal the author's thinking on all the questions either. It does provide a basic guide to facilitating the small group, but not much more than that. I had to write my own teaching plans for our group.

One other criticism. The study looks at the four sections of Jabez's prayer. Wilkinson here fleshes out the biblical meaning of Blessing, Territory, Hand and Keep Me From Evil. I think the study, and those going through the study, would have benefited from one more week dedicated to the exploration of what it means to be honorable in the eyes of God. The book addresses it, but the study does not.

Anyway, the study has great content, even if it lacks continuity. I would definitely recommend it. I hope you enjoy it and I hope God will bless you indeed.

Editorial Review:

The Prayer of Jabez Bible Study reveals how to make praying the Jabez prayer a lifetime habit. Readers will broaden their understanding of the four components of the Jabez prayer ("bless me; enlarge my borders; keep Your hand upon me; keep me from evil") by investigating key scriptural passages and learning how to apply them to their lives. Graphics and lighthearted illustrations make this innovative, four-week study impactful and fun. An eighty-page Leader's Edition with two additional, optional sessions is also available.

Devotional for Outside, Not Inside 4 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Depending on what you want from a devotional, this can be good or boring. If you want something to help you act well, I would recommend this as an AWESOME book for you. If you're going for the spiritual side, this is probably not what you're looking for. This focuses on acting like a Christian, and following God's action rules. There is a little bit of spiritual growth stuff in here, but not much. I wanted the spiritual stuff, and I wasn't satisfied with what I got out of it.

GREAT Bible For The Today's Young Adults-But A Few Drawbacks 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I have always tried to read the bible whenever I was in motel like Motel 6 or Holiday Inn and could never get myself past the 1st page because of how boring it is. Now as a book, this translated version of the bible is in plain and simple English that is easy to understand and is done in a way to make each and every story "from the words of god" (provided you believe in that) an interesting short tory that I have loads of fun reading. As a guide to understanding the Christian religion better and its application to the real world, it does an excellent job how each story is related to the everyday things but the problem I have with it is that often they talk about an everyday application that is in one part of the book that is in another part of the book. Another problem I have with it is that it doesn't really quite well explain the short comings that Christianity has in front of modern science other than GOD said so, which is good for already devout Christian, but for recent converts like me, I want it to make sense. But still, this bible is worth every penny and it would make a great gift to a young adult who is confused about the meaning of Christianity. And thanks to the good people at Carmel Baptist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina and Drew who gave me this book, things are truly clearer.
