Intermediate to Advanced level book 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Pay attention to the sub-title of this book -- This book is a guide to the Premier Editions. That is, it assumes that you have some knowledge, indeed expertise in the basic use of QuickBooks. This might be considered an intermediate level book, or perhaps the second volume in a set. If you like that view, the first volume is Quick Books 2007: The Official Guide. The Official guide is also written by Karhy Ivens, but even the publisher is different - McGraw-Hill. Note that this is not the same Official Guide that comes with the Premier Edition.

The Premier Edition of Quickbooks is aimed at the more advanced businessman with a need for advanced inventory tracking features, business plans, forecasting, and it has several industry specific special packages including one for the accounting profession. It is no accident that the publisher for this book is CPA911.

This is the book for the Premier Edition.

Editorial Review:

Filled with information for accounting professionals who want to provide extra services to clients, this guide can teach business owners and bookkeepers how to use the advanced accounting features, create professional business plans, and analyze and project company performance with QuickBooks Premier Editions. Easy-to-follow instructions; coverage of undocumented features; and tons of tips, tricks, and shortcuts are also provided; offering a wealth of information to both students and professionals.

Editorial Review:

If anything can make accounting fun (or even just a little less painful) QuickBooks Pro 2005 can--especially if you get this no-nonsense task-based guide to it! While QuickBooks Pro 6 was all about going native (Mac OS X–native, that is!), this time out the focus is on ease of use. To ensure that you don't miss out on any of the many features that can streamline your accounting processes, trusted Mac teacher Maria Langer uses simple step-by-step instructions and loads of visual aids to get you up to speed on QuickBooks Pro fast. After providing a detailed account of how to install and configure the program, Maria shows you how to enter sales, make payments, work with transactions, track inventory, process payroll, report results, print forms, and more. Along the way, Maria discusses the accounting principles that guide the program's use and delves deeply into all of QuickBooks' newest features: one-click viewing of cash flow and unbilled hours, the ability to share QuickBooks data with Windows users, and more.

Beginner Bookkeeping 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

As a new business owner, I needed a financial software to handle all my accounting. Quickbooks and this book was the answer for me. The book is easily organized, with an appendix and topical listing and explains enough to me to accomplish the task at hand. While other reviewers find this book limited in detail, as a new business owner, this book worked wonders for me.

Editorial Review:

Along with Quicken: The Official Guide, this is a core title in our Quicken Press line. The previous two editions have sold 35,000 units to date. By continuing to work with Intuit on promotional efforts, we plan to spur continuing growth across Quicken Press titles. -- QuickBooks with over 80% retail market share and more than 2.2 million users is the undisputed leader in accounting software for small businesses. Over 7 out of 10 small businesses who purchase accounting software use either QuickBooks or QuickBooks Pro. -- Osborne's Quicken Press will cover the significant new features in QuickBooks 2000 which is a much more significant upgrade than QuickBooks 99. This is the most complete, authoritative book available on QuickBooks and QuickBooks Pro. As the Official Guide, it is the only book endorsed by Intuit and has received unanimously positive reviews.

Editorial Review:

The 2nd Edition of The Restaurant Operators Complete Guide to QuickBooks (2007) is a detailed step-by-step guide designed for restaurant owners and operators seeking to most accurately manage the day to day bookkeeping and accounting tasks of their restaurant. It provides a Primer on Restaurant Accounting and includes chapters on setting up the company file, entering beginning balances, restaurant accounting period options, how to record daily sales and deposits, multiple options for processing and recording payroll as well as handling charged tips, paying your bills and managing your payables, adjusting food and beverage inventories to obtain accurate cost of goods sold percentages, the importance of using pre-paid accounts, paying your sales tax, and many other topics specific to restaurants. The book also includes a QuickBooks backup file (on CD) that can be easily restored into your QuickBooks software to create a completely configured company file which incorporates an industry specific chart of accounts (one that mirrors The Uniform System of Accounts for Restaurants) as well as many other customized features and memorized transaction templates to get you up and running with ease. The book is written with as little accounting jargon as possible, and in an easy to understand style.

Too much sizzle not enough steak 2 out of 5 stars.
47 of 47 people found this review helpful.

When I first started using this book I thought it was helpful, but when I needed help and information about entering transactions, I realized the shallowness of the book. The author knows a lot about business issues, but I needed bookkeeping help, I needed to understand what to do and why to do it that way.

I recommend you buy Quickbooks The Offical Guide instead if you want to learn Quickbooks inside and out - which is the only way to get the software to do exactly what you need.

Informative and Entertaining 5 out of 5 stars.

This book made a hard program easy to use. He has a good sense of humor, which makes tech stuff easy to read. You won't have to read the book with a cup of coffee. I tried to use the program without the "Dummies" book and got nowhere. After reading the book, I have everything in balance and working. Thank you Mr. Nelson.

Not an adequate reference for expanding businesses 3 out of 5 stars.

As the bookkeeper for a start up internet company, QB for Dummies was helpful as a quick tutorial and overview. If you run a small family business, this is the perfect book for you. But if you're a company that expects to grow (as many of us startups are hopeful of), there's just not enough detail. I am now forced to look for a different book that will give me detailed help in creating the reports I need for financial analysis. Good thing I was given this one for free...

very helpful supplement 3 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book hoping that it would be a single reference for all QB06 matters, including the Premier Edition(s) features.

While the book does discuss each of the flavors of the Premier Editions, the book does not spend much or any time discussing some important features, like classes, which are crucial for intermediate use of QB.

The first half of the book is dedicated to QB general issues, like setting up customers and accounts. I thought the accounts section was particularly well written and offered very helpful insights about how setup decisions affect later work in QB.

However, chapters earlier and later were not as well done. The earliest part of the book goes through some configuration issues in painfully slow detail. Later, the vitally important topic of "classes" is merely mentioned and the reader is referred to the Official Guide for directions on how to accomplish this. Unfortunately, there are far too many redirections to the Official Guide for this book to be a definitive guide to QB in general. The inconsistency (discussing some nearly obvious things in painful detail while discussing other important things in almost no detail) makes me wonder what the intention of the author was regarding general QB issues.

The second half of the book goes over the industry-specific versions. I can't comment on the quality or applicability of those sections.

Apparently, the title of this book should be read very literally to mean that this book is meant to be a definitive guide only to the features of the industry-specific versions of QB Premier.

While offering helpful insights on QB06 in-general, the book does not attempt to be a comprehensive or definitive guide in that general manner.

Nonetheless, the book is worth the list price and I'd encourage people to buy it as a supplement to reading the Official Guide, especially if you want some very good hints about subtle aspects of QB or if you are an industry-specific version user.

Less useful than I had expected based on other reviews. 2 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be rather poorly organized and also not well written. I had a hard time finding my way around in the book. This is definitely not the only book a beginner will need in order to understand QuickBooks from an accounting perspective. There were just too many holes and too much that was unclear. I also found the writing disappointing and wondered if better editing would have helped. In general, this appeared to be a sort of home-made book. Sorry, but that's my impression. I have found it to be of little use compared to learning tools purchased directly from the manufacturer.
