Full Color Code samples appear as they do in Visual Studio and Expression Blend!

Printed entirely in color, with helpful figures and syntax coloring to make code samples appear as they do in Visual Studio and Expression Blend!

Silverlight is Microsoft’s new web-based User Interface (UI) technology, based on Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), which is introducing many revolutionary concepts in the world of UI development. Silverlight uses XAML, with tools like Expression Design and Expression Blend, to create astonishing UI effects (such as gradients, compositions, and animations.) In addition to the richness of the UI elements, Silverlight 2 allows the use of C# or VB in addition to JavaScript to automate web pages. With Silverlight, you have the power of .NET on multiple platforms (IE and Firefox on Windows, Firefox and Safari on Macintosh, and Firefox on Linux). The author brings you up to speed very quickly with numerous hands-on examples.

  • Use XAML to create state-of-the-art user interfaces
  • Create XAML transforms and animations
  • Design compelling user experiences with Microsoft Expression Blend
  • Integrate media into your rich Internet applications
  • Program Silverlight with both JavaScript and .NET languages
  • Deploy Silverlight content to web pages
  • Encode videos with Expression Media Encoder
  • Make the most of Silverlight elements, resources, and styles
  • Use templates to quickly change your application’s look and feel
  • Efficiently debug Silverlight code
  • Use design tools to create graphics that import seamlessly into Silverlight

Laurent Bugnion has been a software engineer since 1996. He has worked with many programming languages and environments, including C, C++, Java, HTML/CSS/JavaScript, and, since 2002, the Microsoft .NET platform. He has been honored twice as a Microsoft MVP: first for ASP.NET and now for Client Application Development. He blogs about Silverlight and related technologies at http://blog.galasoft.ch.

Facebook: The Missing Manual Sneak Preview: Five Tips and Tricks
1. Never check the "Remember me" box when logging onto the site. (Doing so puts your account at unnecessary risk and saves you very little time or effort.)
2. When you register for the site, use your actual birthday so that your friends will get an automatic heads-up a few days before the Big Day (all the better to fete you with).
3. Never add compromising photos or info to your Facebook profile; bosses, teachers, hiring managers, and others can use legitimate means to see your profile *even if* you think you've adjusted your privacy settings to prevent them.
4. If you're on Facebook to find a gig (or a date), be sure to sprinkle keywords liberally in your profile descriptions. Doing so ups the odds of your appearing in other members' searches.
5. Before you fill out your profile, first head to the main menu and click the "privacy" link (little-p) and follow the steps in Chapter 12 of the book to customize who gets to see how much of your personal information.

With the humor of Bridget Jones and the vitality of Augusten Burroughs, Julie Powell recounts how she conquered every recipe in Julia Child+s Mastering the Art of French Cooking and saved her soul. Julie Powell is 30-years-old, living in a rundown apartment in Queens and working at a soul-sucking secretarial job that+s going nowhere. She needs something to break the monotony of her life, and she invents a deranged assignment. She will take her mother+s dog-eared copy of Julia Child+s 1961 classic Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and she will cook all 524 recipes. In the span of one year. At first she thinks it will be easy. But as she moves from the simple Potage Parmentier (potato soup) into the more complicated realm of aspics and crpes, she realizes there+s more to Mastering the Art of French Cooking than meets the eye. With Julia+s stern warble always in her ear, Julie haunts the local butcher, buying kidneys and sweetbreads. She sends her husband on late-night runs for yet more butter and rarely serves dinner before midnight. She discovers how to mold the perfect Orange Bavarian, the trick to extracting marrow from bone, and the intense pleasure of eating liver. And somewhere along the line she realizes she has turned her kitchen into a miracle of creation and cuisine. She has eclipsed her life+s ordinariness through spectacular humor, hysteria, and perseverance.

GREAT BOOK FOR BEGINNERS AND INTERMEDIATES (ONLY)! 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

How to Buy, Sell & Profit on eBay by eBay PowerSeller Adam Ginsberg is a great guide to starting a business on eBay and becoming a successful seller. Although it is slightly dated (published in 2005), Ginsberg's decision to provide more general information about eBay makes it useful even now. His conversational style makes it seem more like a story about his journey to becoming a PowerSeller than a "how-to" book. While this narrative format makes it an easy (and, at times, amusing) read, it also makes it slightly difficult to quickly look up information that one may need off hand. Tips on any given topic are generally spread throughout the book. For example, although chapter 11 is titled "Tips, Tricks, and Advanced Techniques," these are also found well before this chapter. For a beginner or an intermediate seller this book is highly useful, nonetheless. They will learn the ins and outs of eBay with ways to make it work for them and distinguish them from the other millions of sellers on eBay. Topics include thinking like an entrepreneur, what to sell, payment and shipping, titles and descriptions, tax benefits and more. He also talks about the all-important feedback score on eBay. However, it has slightly changed since this book was written as sellers can no longer leave buyers negative feedback. For up-to-date information on eBay's policies, sellers should consult eBay.com.

Even with the constant reiteration of the products and services his company offers for eBay, How to Buy, Sell & Profit on eBay is a useful tool to begin the journey to PowerSeller and home-based business ownership. Ginsberg even throws in a few tips for buyers. "I tell buyers to type in common misspellings of the item they're looking for, because if they do, in fact, find that item misspelled, they'll probably be the only ones who do. It's a great way to find bargains on eBay. (165)"

Editorial Review:

This book enabled me to surf the Internet quicker. My questions were answered on topics, that I was unaware of. Very informative. A perfect read for individuals that have some previous knowledge of the Internet, yet not enough.

I have one 3 out of 5 stars.

Looks good. But the first two chapters spend much time on explaning the security issue and that is a bit boring.

Great for Beginners 5 out of 5 stars.

My husband is a computer/internet newcomer. He read most chapters and is using it as a reference. The book reinforced the security issues surrounding some websites and popups. Great book for folks that are unfamiliar with the web.

Editorial Review:

Well before Ajax and Microsoft's Windows Presentation Foundation hit the scene, Macromedia offered the first method for building web pages with the responsiveness and functionality of desktop programs with its Flash-based "Rich Internet Applications." Now, new owner Adobe is taking Flash and its powerful capabilities beyond the Web and making it a full-fledged development environment.

Rather than focus on theory, the ActionScript 3.0 Cookbook concentrates on the practical application of ActionScript, with more than 300 solutions you can use to solve a wide range of common coding dilemmas. You'll find recipes that show you how to: Detect the user's Flash Player version or their operating system Build custom classes Format dates and currency types Work with strings Build user interface components Work with audio and video Make remote procedure calls using Flash Remoting and web services Load, send, and search XML data And much, much more ...

Each code recipe presents the Problem, Solution, and Discussion of how you can use it in other ways or personalize it for your own needs, and why it works. You can quickly locate the recipe that most closely matches your situation and get the solution without reading the whole book to understand the underlying code. Solutions progress from short recipes for small problems to more complex scripts for thornier riddles, and the discussions offer a deeper analysis for resolving similar issues in the future, along with possible design choices and ramifications. You'll even learn how to link modular ActionScript pieces together to create rock-solid solutions for Flex 2 and Flash applications.

When you're not sure how ActionScript 3.0 works or howto approach a specific programming dilemma, you can simply pick up the book, flip to the relevant recipe(s), and quickly find the solution you're looking for.

an awful experience 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I'm still slogging through this, one of the worst-written books in the history of technical writing. What makes it so awful is that instead just telling you about some code and what it does, they literally tell you in verbal terms what to write for each lline of code: The majority of the book is comprised of this sort of stuff:

"Step 11: While still in OrderConf.mxml, locate the Delivery Date form item. Change the so the text property calls the format() method of the orderFormat DateFormatter on the deliveryDate property of the orderInfo data structure. Be sure to remove the manual date formatting from the last lesson. "

What planet is this author from? You don't tell people how to write lines of code using verbal language. You display a chunk of code and then explain what it does. Finding real information in this book is like panning for gold. I am writing only in hopes of sparing the many good people out there the pain I have been enduring reading this horrible book. Choose another. Any other.
