Editorial Review:

Ruby in Practice increases your productivity by showing you specific Ruby techniques you can use in your projects. The book offers detailed strategies for using Ruby in a large-scale environment. You'll see concrete examples of integration, messaging, web development, and databases, all presented in a clear Problem/Solution format. This book won't help you push your deadline back, but it will help you get the job done in less time.

Above all, Ruby in Practice is a practical book for developers who want an in depth understanding of the Ruby language and its toolset. The book is divided into three major parts.

The first part concentrates on issues that developers face both from within their organizations and from their peers. The authors weigh the costs and benefits of using Ruby in enterprise development projects, the over-riding theme being that every developer should always aim to use the right tool for any particular job. The authors then examine the pros and cons of developing with Ruby, and where appropriate, compare Ruby to other languages, both conceptually and in code.

The second part discusses techniques for communication and integration of systems. The authors describe how libraries and techniques are used to facilitate messaging, web development and communication automation. They also focus on how the strategies in the first section can be used with these libraries to make development more flexible and efficient.

The last part shows how to manage data and integrate with existing data using Ruby. The authors describe techniques for using existing Ruby libraries that either replace popular Java libraries or can interface with existing data in a different way. They go on to show you how strategies covered in the first section can be used to enable Ruby to interact with existing assets or to build new data systems.

Living Proof that Amazon's review pages work.... 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I had to learn Foxpro.

My IT Department couldn't (?) get the manuals. They'd installed it wrongly and the online help didn't work.

They bought me "Foxpro for Dummies".

I threw it at them. (Yes, it IS useless - they should have read the Amazon reviews.)

They bought me another book which was quite interesting but didn't help with what I needed (How do I do this? )

I bought the manuals myself but realised I needed a bit of an overview. - I mean, procedural programming is like a toy train set, but this is like Lego (and which bloody brick does the bit of code go in? )

Thank you for the reviews - this IS a good (nay, brilliant)book for anyone getting to grips with OOP - and you don't often get (rude) jokes in a book like this. If you know a bit about programming and need something to give you the bigger picture, this is it!

Editorial Review:

Industry authority Savannah Brentnall provides a short, lively treatment--in plain English and with a wealth of diagrams and examples--of the terminology, concepts, and benefits of object technology as it relates to Visual FoxPro developers. Short code examples show programmers how to take hands-on advantage of the Fox Pro object model.

Editorial Review:

For as long as there's been a Web, people have been trying to make it faster. The maturation of the Web has meant more users, more data, more bells and whistles, and consequently longer waits on the Web. Improved performance has become one of the most important factors in determining the usability of both the Web in general and of individual sites in particular.

Web Performance Tuning is about getting the best performance from the Web. This book isn't just about tuning the web server software; it's also about getting optimal performance from a browser, tuning the hardware (on both the server and browser ends), and maximizing the capacity of the network itself.

Web Performance Tuning hits the ground running, giving concrete advice for quick results--the "blunt instruments" for improving crippled performance right away. The book then takes a breath and pulls back to give a conceptual background of the principles of computing performance. The latter half of the book approaches each element of a web transaction--from client to network to server--to examine the weak links in the chain and how to strengthen them.

Tips include:

  • Using simultaneous downloads to locate bottlenecks
  • Adjusting TCP for better web performance
  • Reducing the impact of DNS
  • Upgrading device drivers
  • Using alternatives to CGI
  • Locating the web server strategically
  • Minimizing browser cache lookups
  • Avoiding symbolic links for web content

Editorial Review:

Did you know that if rather than using Google (great as it is) to find, say, the current wholesale price of a given used car, you used a specialized search engine instead, you could end up with a few relevant results rather than hundreds of potentially useful ones? Or that simply by choosing the correct keyword, you could improve your search results exponentially? If you're like most people, you probably know you could be searching more effectively; this volume actually shows you how! After providing a thorough grounding in search basics-keyword usage, wildcards, and more-author Diane Poremsky moves on to the biggies, Goggle and Yahoo, showing you how to make the most out of their differing approaches. You'll also learn about Boolean stars Alta Vista and Hot Bot before the authors launch into an extensive discussion of specialized search engines. Step-by-step instructions and loads of visual aids make learning a snap with this essential guide.

Editorial Review:

Book Description

Understanding Directory Services clarifies the complex topic of directory services, starting with basic theory and archetypes, and then working its way up to the current directory service implementations. It describes the basic idea behind directory services, explaining the underlying conceptual models, design characteristics, and methods of managing distributed information.

The book begins with an overview of directory services and their core characteristics, highlighting critical aspects of directory information, distribution, and storage. The evolving nature of the information the directory contains, and the factors involved in organizing and managing it are discussed in detail, and then methods of information distribution and storage are examined at length.

After exploring the basics of directory service, the book progresses to in-depth chapters on each of the critical technologies being used to implement directory services:

* The X.500 standards are explained to help you understand the foundations of directory services and provide a basis for comparison of the other directory technologies.

* Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) and its emerging role as a directory access standard is described in detail, with thorough explanations of models, naming, and operations.

*The Domain Name System (DNS) is examined from a directory service perspective, noting parallels in structures and operations.

This knowledge of directory services is then used to describe the design of X.500 and LDAP based directory service products, as well as NDS eDirectory and Active Directory, highlighting the architectural and operational implications of vendor's design decisions. This book:

* Explores X.500-based directory products (eTrust, DirX, Nexor), and highlights implementation approaches and capabilities.

* Describes the LDAP-based directory products (OpenLDAP, SecureWay, iPlanet), identifying similarities and differences between them.

* Explains NDS eDirectory describing the underlying directory architecture and its foundations in X.500, and its evolution from an NOS-based directory to a general purpose directory service.

* Examines how Active Directory integrates NT 4, LDAP, and DNS technologies into a directory service that leverages established Windows networks.

* Explores the information management issues that meta-directories (Siemens DirXmetahub, iPlanet meta-directory, Microsoft Meta-directory Services, Novell DirXML) are designed to address, and characteristics of different types of meta-directory solutions (as well as Radiant Logic's Radiant One virtual directory server).

* Identifies the design of XML-based directory markup languages that map directory schema, objects, and operations providing directory interoperability.

The final chapter is focused on helping you evaluate directory services in the context of your business and network environment. Information, business, and network control factors are identified, and key factors in directory service assessment are explained.

Understanding Directory Services is an excellent reference for directory service technologies that includes extensive references and a glossary containing 385 directory service terms. By explaining key directory technologies, and the integration of those technologies, this book provides the information you need to understand the design and operations involved in all directory services.

From the Back Cover

Understanding Directory Services is the most in-depth resource available on directory services theory, architecture, and design. It provides the conceptual framework and critical technical information for IT professionals who are using directory services in their networks or e-business solutions.

The 1st edition of this book covered the underlying directory service technologies (X.500, LDAP, DNS), and integrated the information from a networking perspective with a special focus on eDirectory and Active Directory.

The 2nd Edition extends this coverage to the LDAP-based directories (such as iPlanet and SecureWay) and the X.500-based enterprise directory services (including eTrust, DirX, and Nexor), as well as the emerging meta-directory technologies and products which are crucial to the integration of the multiple directories in an enterprise networking environment.

By explaining the origins and technologies of directory services, and clarifying the integration of key directory technologies into network and e-commerce platforms, Understanding Directory Services gives you the information you need to understand the underlying design and operations involved in all directory services.
