Hitting Hands 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book for my 22 month old who has learned that hitting is an "effective" way to get his big brother's attention. My son is fascinated with this book and obviously gets the message. We have a few other books from this series and love them.

good book for generating dialog 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I saw this book recently featured in an article in a print periodical about child development

We've recently had minor problems with our 4-year old son acting out after preschool on days when he had been picked on by other kids. We got the book and used it is a bedtime story. It generated good dialogue (as good as you get with a 4-year old) and it made him think before he acted. It gave him some tools to use with the more physical kids so he resolves the problem in the moment without resorting to aggression. Wthat he doesn't have to resort to acting out to make the behavior stop. I am glad that I purchased this book.

We bought also 'Words Are Not for Hurting' and that one was not as useful for generating dialog.

Editorial Review:

Our new award-winning board book version of HANDS ARE NOT FOR HITTING is for younger children, toddlers to age 3--because it's never too soon to learn these important concepts. This version is shorter and simpler. It's quicker and easier to read aloud. Because it's a board book, it's virtually indestructible. Bright, inviting, accessible, and durable, this book belongs everywhere young children are.

Interesting & challenging 4 out of 5 stars.
26 of 26 people found this review helpful.

I used a couple of these mysteries in my 5th grade classroom. The students enjoyed them because it was different then the way they usually practiced problem solving. The only downside to this book is that I think it is more challenging than the ages suggested. There were only a few stories that were appropriate for my 5th graders and those were still very challenging for them. I wouldn't reccommend this book to someone with a general ed. 4th grade classroom but it is perfect for junior high (6th, 7th, 8th) students!

Math Improvement the FUN way. 5 out of 5 stars.

This product helped my grand daughter who was having math difficulty better understand math concepts. She was having fun at the same time.

Incredibly fun math problems 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I'm a private math tutor and am using this book as a Friday reward for two sixth grade girls who are studying algebra one with me. It is challenging in some interesting ways. It is full of story problems to be unraveled, about two kids who are detectives. I had given it to my daughter, who was the first year teacher and she said her kids loved it more than any other part of math. They can be solved alone or in groups. I really recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

Humorous, reproducible math mystery stories will give your math sleuths a chance to have fun while practicing important math problem solving skills. They’re just perfect for classwork and homework and help you meet the NCTM standards. For use with Grades 4-8.

Spelling and Reading 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

It's been shown that spelling provides a window to one's reading. This book explains the developmental stages children go through K- adult. The database software on one of the CDs that allows one to analyze the spelling inventories and sort the results is very easy to use. Classroom teachers appreciate the data I have been able to give them on their students. The word games and short videos on the 2nd CD are very helpful. The analytical phonics approach is very kid-friendly right up through high school. This is a very thorough resource that every ELA, SpEd, and Title I teacher should use.

Editorial Review:

With more than 15 years of extensive observations and experiences in real classrooms, the authors bring keen insight to this activity-based book. They advocate basing student learning on the appropriate developmental level. This philosophy is supported with more than 250 ready-to-use word study, spelling, vocabulary, and phonics activities presented in developmental sequence, from the Emergent through the Derivational Relation stage. For educators and school administrators.

This is the book! What's more important than reading?! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is appropriate for every caring parent. I am a homeschooling mother of three and I can't recommend it highly enough. After reading the library's copy I had to buy my own copy, plus several for friends and family members who have kids. It is full of high-quality info and ideas about reading to children, and about them ultimately reading to themselves. There is also an organized and valuable "recommended books" list in the back. Wonderful!

Editorial Review:

For more than two decades, millions of parents and educators have turned to Jim Trelease’s beloved classic to help countless children become avid readers through awakening their imaginations and improving their language skills. Now this new edition of The Read-Aloud Handbook imparts the benefits, rewards, and importance of reading aloud to children of a new generation. Supported by delightful anecdotes as well as the latest research, The Read- Aloud Handbook offers proven techniques and strategies—and the reasoning behind them— for helping children discover the pleasures of reading and setting them on the road to becoming lifelong readers.

Homeschool material 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Excellent material. I really like how this material is designed to to cycle through over three times during a child's homeschool experience in grades K-12.

PLEASE view ALL 1-starred reviews before making your purchase 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I would not have bothered to write a review of this book for there are many 1-starred reviews here already and many have made very good arguments against this book (if only I had read those before purchasing). However, I feel compelled to add one more negative review because I feel the need to balance out the 5-star reviews. This book makes me question Ms. Bauer's Well-Trained Mind and whether I should use her materials in my homeschool curriculum.

Editorial Review:

What terrible secret was buried in Shi Huangdi's tomb? Did nomads like lizard stew? What happened to Anansi the Spider in the Village of the Plantains? And how did a six-year-old become the last emperor of Rome?

Told in a straightforward, engaging style that has become Susan Wise Bauer's trademark, The Story of the World covers the sweep of human history from ancient times until the present. Africa, China, Europe, the Americas- find out what happened all around the world in long-ago times. This first volume begins with the earliest nomads and ends with the last Roman emperor.

This read-aloud series is designed for parents to share with elementary-school children. Enjoy it together and introduce your child to the marvelous story of the world's civilizations.

Our favorite book ever 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is just great, entertaining, educating, fun reading and listening. It's a book about building friendship. I'll definitely buy more of her books. (I have a feeling my son will like "The Snail and The Whale" and "Where's My Mom?":) ) The only other book my son loved this much was "Hello! Is This Grandma?" by Ian Whybrow and Deborah Allwrigh but I think I love reading this one better due to the rhymes in it :)

Room on the Broom 5 out of 5 stars.

My 3 year old grandson loves this book. Nice art work and a good story. I think this book would be a great addition to any child's library. I was extremely pleased with the book we love reading this together. I hope I can find other nice books like this for him. His mother loved Witches Holiday by Alice Lowe when she was little and I think this is a equal.

Editorial Review:

The witch and her cat are happily flying through the sky on a broomstick when the wind picks up and blows away the witch's hat, then her bow, and then her wand! Luckily, three helpful animals find the missing items, and all they want in return is a ride on the broom. But is there room on the broom for so many friends? And when disaster strikes, will they be able to save the witch from a hungry dragon?

Making Children Thoughtful Readers Is So Important 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Teaching young children to think and especially think about what they read is so important. Too often children read words with no idea about what they are reading. As a teacher I constantly use children's literature to teach comprehension. Two of my favorites are:Life's Little Lessons: An Inch-By-Inch Tale of Success and The Big Squeal: A Wild, True, and Twisted Tailwhich not only have fabulous messages but a great teaching guide. I recommend these very highly to my parents because of these guides. Start young teaching kids to understand what they read!

Teaching Reading Comprehension 4 out of 5 stars.

This was a great book for those interested in teaching first graders how to comprehend their reading. It is full of strategies and systems that can be adapted to all grade levels. Easy, quick read.

Teaching With Debbie 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

In this book, Debbie Miller leads the reader through a year in her classroom. I use it daily in order to focus my thoughts as I teach in a reading workshop structure. Even though I teach third grade and Debbie wrote from the perspective of a first grade teacher, her common sense yet highly sensitive approach to teaching reading empowers me to lead my students through a year of discovery. With her thoughts and strategies running through my mind influencing my lesson planning, my students rediscover themselves as readers. This book is a valuable resource for anyone teaching reading in the early elementary grades.

Love the Work Stations 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am a first year teacher learning the ropes. I am finding the work stations very easy to implement and am enjoying the "freedom" to achieve reading level testing at week three of the school year and am looking forward to guided reading group time soon.

Amazing 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I would recommend Debbie's book to all K-2 teachers! I spent TONS of time making and preparing "centers" during my 1st year of teaching and my students struggled with them. I read Debbie's book and set up my work stations according to her models - not only is it my students' favorite time of the day, but it's mine too! I also spend very little time preparing for work stations as the book explains how to use tasks that are taught during your everyday lessons (this way they easily align with the curriculum)!

I LOVE this book and just can't say enough about it! It has a permanent place on my desk!

LOVE IT 5 out of 5 stars.

I actually have two copies of this book. I had misplaced my first copy and had to have another one. I use these ideas throughout my kindergarten classroom. It would be even better for first and second grade classrooms. I use the "I Can" lists and management board ideas. This book really helps make centers work. I plan on giving one as a gift any time I have a student teacher. If you can only buy one book, this is the one to buy!
