The best memory I have of reading to my son, years ago... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

All of Tomie dePaolo's books are treasures, and this one is no exception! While in first grade my son Joshua was assigned this book and to make a shoe box diarama. It is the best memory I have about his childhood many years ago, as he is 21 years old now. This was "our" first Tomie dePaolo/Strega Nona book, and after we completed reading it we went to our local library and found all others written by dePaolo.

dePaolo's books are so creative and colorful, matched only by mischievious but innocent, captivating story-telling and magical intrigue that kept my son reading for hours. I would highly recommend Strega Nona and all other Tomie dePaolo books to all parents of pre-school and grade school aged children and grandchildren.

A classic book 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a very basic morality story - Big Anthony (who never listens) was told Not To Touch The Pasta Pot, but when he had a chance he went right for it! Alas, he hadn't paid attention and so neglected to properly learn how to turn the pasta pot *off* - with predictable results.

The image of Big Anthony eating his debt to the village is priceless :)

Editorial Review:

When Strega Nona leaves him alone with her magic pasta pot, Big Anthony is determined to show the townspeople how it works.

effective test preparation 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

In the past, I did not feel like children should use test workbooks this early. After we enrolled in Beestar weekly reading program (an excellent web site http://www.beestar.org), we realize that there are so many kids doing so well. No wonder the standard tests keep raising the bar. A low expectation from parents only leads to low achieving children. This book boosts your child's vocabulary, reading, and test taking skills effectively. It gives you a good chance to know how much your child learned in school. No matter how he was taught, the book would cover the bases and practice what he learned. We enjoyed this fine book very much!

Editorial Review:

A Volcano in My Tummy: Helping Children to Handle Anger presents a clear and effective approach to helping children and adults alike understand and deal constructively with children's anger. Using easy to understand yet rarely taught skills for anger management, including how to teach communication of emotions, A Volcano in My Tummy offers engaging, well-organized activities which help to overcome the fear of children's anger which many adult care-givers experience. By carefully distinguishing between anger the feeling, and violence the behavior, this accessible little book, primarily created for ages 6 to thirteen, helps to create an awareness of anger, enabling children to relate creatively and harmoniously at critical stages in their development.

Through activities, stories, articles, and games designed to allow a multi-subject, developmental approach to the topic at home and in school, A Volcano in My Tummy gives us the tools we need to put aside our problems with this all-too-often destructive emotion, and to have fun while we're at it.

Elaine Whitehouse is a teacher, family court and private psychotherapist, mother of two and leader of parenting skills workshops for eight years. Warwick Pudney is a teacher and counsellor with ten years experience facilitating anger management, abuser therapy and men's change groups, as well as being a father of three. Both regularly conduct workshops.

Amazing 5 out of 5 stars.

"Yardsticks", by Chip Wood, is a wonderful resourse for anyone working with children aged 4 to 14. It offers insights into the development of various age groups, and the book is conveniently divided by age. So, if you are working with seven-year-olds, you simply go to the section labeled "Sevens" and you can read about their cognitive abilities as well as physical attributes an average child of this age has. I am a pre-service teacher and recieved only a short blurb copy of this book and knew I HAD to have the entire book. It has been a wonderful help in my teaching and I plan on utilizing it for my entire career. Get this book!

Editorial Review:

Written with warmth and humor, Yardsticks offers clear descriptions of children's development. This comprehensive, user-friendly reference has been a favorite of parents and teachers for more than 10 years. For each age, this book includes: narrative description of developmental traits; charts summarizing physical, social, language, and cognitive growth patterns; suggestions for curricular areas: reading, writing, mathematics, and thematic units; favorite books for different ages. What's new in the 3rd edition: a brief overview of issues in the development of bilingualism and biliteracy among Latino/Hispanic children; an appendix on the birthday cluster exercise for applying the information in the book to working with a whole class of students; an updated list of recommended children s books; an updated list of recommended resources for teachers and parents.

This book is very helpful in meeting students' individual spelling needs. It's nice to have the lists prepared for you and short instructional summaries to bring yourself up to speed on word patterns--things you don't even realize you know! The book is well-organized and offers success for all.

Editorial Review:

This book, intended for use with the core Words Their Way book, is the ideal supplement to any phonics, spelling and word study curriculum. The Words Their Way: Word Study for Phonics, Spelling, and Vocabulary Instruction core book provides a practical, research-based and classroom-proven way to study words with pupils; this companion volume augments that content with numerous reproducible sorts that specifically address the needs of the syllables and affixes speller. THE BEST!! 5 out of 5 stars.

WOW. This is an awesome program and an awesome deal.

If you are like me, tired of wasting money on dictionaries, grammar books, travel guides, contrived music programs....

You will not regret buying this. Not only is it inexpensive, and usable for all ages, you will have usable spanish vocabulary immediately.

This Book is Fantastic A++++++ Learning Tool 5 out of 5 stars.

Spanish is not our native language, but we believe our children need to be bilingual. Last October I bought "Play and Learn Spanish" because I liked that it had every day situations to practice and the came with a CD for pronunciation. After bringing it home and using it, WOW it is INCREDIBLE.

After a week, my children and I were singing the songs - not perfectly, but pretty close. We have now been listening to the CD and reading the book for 3+ months. My five year old daughter and I are having small conversations in Spanish together. I can't tell you how incredibly special this is. We have since purchased "Hop Skip and Sing Spanish, "Goldilocks" and "Little Red Riding Hood". All Ana Lomba's materials are of equal exemplary standards.

I hope she will continue to produce more books and CDs, we will buy them all!

Thank you for creating such incredible tools for the non-speaking Spanish population.

P.S. This is now my signature gift to all my friends who would like to learn Spanish.

I wish I could write like this! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Calling Doctor Amelia Bedelia by Herman Parish, like all of his Amelia Bedelia books, is hysterically funny. Parish's use of expressions confuse Mr. Rogers' maid, Amelia Bedelia, throughout the entire story. Poor, silly, Amelia Bedelia never realizes how confused she really is. She takes everything anyone says literally, so when her boss Mr. Rogers says "jump in the car", she thinks that he actually means to sit in the car and jump.
In this story, Amelia Bedelia goes to the doctor. However, when she gets there the nurse asks for Amelia Bedelia's help with the patients. A woman who calls the doctor's office to complain that she has "caught a bug" is told to "let it go" by Amelia Bedelia. She proceeds to tell a woman who has hives to bring some honey to the doctor's office. She looks at a bank's clock to take a patient's temperature and she tells a boy to draw his own blood onto a piece of blank paper. A boy says that he is at the office for a test and Amelia Bedelia tells him that he must go to school.
No matter what Amelia Bedelia did for most of the book, she is a hit when she "treats" the patients to ice cream! This is not exactly what the nurse had in mind when she said to treat the patients, however, Amelia Bedelia comes out looking like a hero!
Amelia Bedelia is entertaining to the adults who read this story to children because we have an even better sense of Amelia Bedelia's silliness. I love reading this story to my second graders and they love hearing it!

Editorial Review:

Funny bones

The doctor is out! But Amelia Bedelia is ready to help a crowd of grouchy patients. Along the way she doses out some of the best medicine of all -- laughter, of course!

inspiring 3 out of 5 stars.

It's a good book if you are looking for inspiration. Tovani discusses her experience in trying to promote reading in all classrooms. However, I feel that it is more reminiscient than a tool for instruction, although she does offer suggestions to use in the classroom at the end of her chapters.

Any Teacher Can Benefit From This 5 out of 5 stars.

I found that by reading this book, not only did I learn strategies for teaching reading to my students but I also learned how to improve my own reading. The books tells us to remind the kids that even though they arent the best readers, they still have time to be.

This book is a quick read and you are bound to get a greater understanding of how to create a classroom climate that is safe, and provides a place for children to be honest about their learning, confusion and understanding on a text. Reading this boook has given me several lesson plans that will help me teach my students this upcoming year and I feel well-prepared!

A key resource for secondary or high school teachers 5 out of 5 stars.

Tovani has produced a concise and practical resource for literacy development in high schools. Full of practical ideas based on current knowledge about how we learn, the book is useful to teachers in all subject areas. I have used this book in my work as a school administrator, and now it is a basic textbook in our university secondary teacher education program.

Very good, deep book 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

For one, I would like to start out that I am thirteen and my name is not "Bernease" as it may show up, but my grandmothers. Now that that's out of the way...

I'm really astounded by the amount of ignorant people who are reviewing this book. This book is supposed to be an inside look of what life was like during the Revolutionary War. It does a perfect job of that. I think that James and Christopher did a great job of showing just how bad life was in the era: the scarceness of food and clothes, and of course, the violence. Yes, the book does have some pretty gory scenes, but I wouldn't really call it "action". Most of it tends to be of Tim or a solider describing what he had seen during the war, and without this info we can't really tell how bad the war really was.

Granted, this book was published around the 1970's and the Vietnam War was still raging, so perhaps children at the time were more resistant to the violence portrayed in the book, mabye from the influence of the war.

Also, what is with the people complaining with the plot? The plot is just fine the way it is. Really, the plot isn't meant to portray a story of adventure, it helps the reader understand what life was like during the war. Since most of the readers are about the same age as Tim Meeker, they can probably understand how he is feeling.

Still, the plot does occasionally have some tense parts where you wait, wondering "what's going to happen next" though truthfully after awhile it tends to get to predictable;you know he is going to die. At least some characters defy this logic used a lot throughout the book.

Well, while the book can come to a quick ending(about a day or 2) and the title is quite an annoying spoiler, this book is well worth the five dollars, and will be quite an interesting read.

Editorial Review:

A complete guide to teaching My Brother Sam is Dead. Includes an author biography, background information, summaries, thought-provoking discussion questions, as well as creative, cross-curricular activities and reproducibles that motivate students.

Great resource EXCEPT for small letters 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for my 3 year old- she loves it- it is easy for her to understand. I would have given this book 5 stars but, when it has you trace words it is all in small letters and most everything I read says to teach your kids capital letters first and then introduce small letters. That is my only complaint though!
