Editorial Review:

This is an important book for teachers, administrators, prospective teachers, college professors, or anyone seeking to provide quality teaching to children in their first years of schooling.
    - Harvard Educational Review

Among the many changes to sweep American literacy education has been a move toward whole class instruction. Nonetheless, children still bring to literacy a wide range of experiences and competencies. How, then, might teachers best support a literate community yet still meet the needs of individual readers? For Fountas and Pinnell, the answer lies in guided reading, which allows children to develop as individual readers within the context of a small group. Their new book is the richest, most comprehensive guided reading resource available today and the first systematic offering of instructional support for guided reading adherents.

Guided Reading was written for K-3 classroom teachers, reading resource teachers, teacher educators, preservice teachers, researchers, administrators, and staff developers. Based on the authors' nine years of research and development, it explains how to create a balanced literacy program based on guided reading and supported by read aloud, shared reading, interactive writing, and other approaches. While there is an entire chapter devoted solely to the process by which children become literate, every chapter clearly presents the theoretical underpinnings of the practices it suggests. Also included are guidelines for:

  • observation and assessment
  • dynamic grouping of readers
  • creating sets of leveled books
  • selecting and introducing books
  • teaching for strategies
  • classroom management.
  • Best of all, there are well over 2,500 leveled books in the Appendixes, along with many other reproducible resources that teachers will use for years to come.

"Good first teaching is the foundation of education and the right of every child," assert the authors. With the publication of this book, educators themselves will find the foundation in reading skills instruction they so rightly deserve.

Very similar to Kumon's Let's Color 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

My son had a lot of fun with the Kumon First Steps book "Let's Color" and so when Kumon just recently released "My Book of Coloring", I bought him one. It is very very similar to "Let's Color", only is in a bigger format. There are 40 pictures to color, all on the right side pages. On the left side pages, are "mazes" for the child to go thru, to learn crayon control. The coloring pages are in full color, the maze pages are in black and white. The coloring pages have only partial white areas for the child to color, a white circle in the cherries, a white sqare in the cheese, a white triangle in the fire truck. Later pictures have more than one white space to color, and then it becomes coloring things like, the stripes on the tiger, the spots on a giraffe, the strawberries on the cake. Some of my favorites are at the back: finish coloring the prince and princess, the robot, the magician, the tropical fish. Artwork is pleasing and fun, cute, but not babyish. The book is recommended for ages 2-4, but I think older children will like it too. My son is 8 and he likes it. Some children don't like coloring; a whole blank page to color can crush the spirit of some children to even start. Kumon gives the child only small areas to finish in the picture, so the completion of the coloring page is more quickly realized, and the child is satisfied. I guess I would have liked to see this coloring book be a bit beyond the first "Let's Color", and have had more pages like the ones at the end of the book, with a bit more white areas to color. The purpose of the book is for the child to learn control of a crayon/pencil (my children have all enjoyed coloring with colored pencils best), and to match colors. This book teaches these skills in a fun way. My son is always amazed that if he colors neatly, and the colored pencil he chooses really matches the surrounding printed ink color, that it's hard to tell where he colored it! Printed on heavy white paper, My Book of Coloring is a far superior book to the junky coloring books printed on flimsy newsprint paper that you find at the local store. I think any child just learning to color would love this book, and I think it will please parents too! Note: cover art does NOT represent the inside art. Be sure to also give a nice box of crayons or colored pencils when you give this book to a child! I recommend Prismacolor colored pencils and Crayola twist up crayons.

Really great games to teach math 5 out of 5 stars.
44 of 48 people found this review helpful.

There's one game in this book that's worth the whole price--Skyscraper Runup, a kind of relay race for computation that students *love* to play. The Remainder Raccoon game is also a hit. The others are fun, too. I highly recommend the book. I've worn out my copy already!

Good board games 5 out of 5 stars.

Great resource to teach math in a fun way. 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book is a must for all teachers who struggle with making kids assimilate difficult concepts such as calculating equivalent fractions, geometry, measurement, probability and statistics, decimals, and mathematical operations ranging from addition all the way through divisions with remainder.

It contains black and white masters to photocopy in order to build your own board games. What I have done so far, is photocopy the games, color them and then have them laminated so that they can last longer. These board games are ideal for small group instruction or learning centers. Most of the games require not only the board and/or the dice, but a worksheet for the kids to color while they advance on the board, making the games even more engaging for the students.

The games are aimed at students between 3rd and 6th grades, and they all contain really attractive illustrations.

If you are looking for something fun to do with your kids meanwhile they are mastering mathematical reasoning, this book is a must for you!

School Memory Album by Karen F Goldfuss 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

We didn't know what School Memory album was until my wife's cousin in Canada mentioned to her. I purchased 4 albums for our grand niece in Sasktchewan, Canada. When we received it was a pleasant surpise. The album was well organized with space for class photos, events, other important activities. After seeing the album, we ordered 2 more for our 5 and 2 year grandsons.I hope they will share thier school memories with others. I recommend this product to parents and grands parents to give it to their children and grand children.

Comprehensive School Memory Book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I was really pleased when I received this school memory album. Very sturdy book with a cute design throughout. The design grows with the child, so it's not too cutesy or irrelevant when the child is in 4th, 5th, or 6th grades. Each grade has a place for a school picture and recording school events and child's interests, as well as a two-sided pocket for storing momentos (limited capacity, of course). I'm only on 1st grade, but I'm very happy with the book. Easy to complete and my son loved filling it out with me. I hope to find something comparable for 7th to 12th grade. Great keepsake! Just what I was looking for.

Great Vocabulary Workbook 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

My son, who is not really interested in Language Arts, but is good at it, got very interested in this book. He would ask to do vocabulary and more vocabulary.

This book makes learning vocabulary fun even though it's through repetition. Each lesson contains many pages of the same words but in different ways and it gets kids into vocabulary and learning new words happily!

    I highly recommend this book!

excellent for after-school enrichment 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I learned about this book from Beestar online vocabulary program for kids. Vocabulary is the foundation for good reading and writing. Many smart kids don't do well in reading because of limited vocabulary. Unlike some other skills, a good vocabulary cannot be achieved quickly. Young students need to learn and read extensively to snowball their words. This book is a great help. It gives thorough practice through the use of synonyms, antonyms, compound words, homophones, homographs, plurals, etc., to ensure that your child will learn the meanings of the words used in each section. Through a variety of exercises that vary within and between each section, a child will become familiar with not only the word's meaning, but also the meaning of each type of word (i.e., synonym, homophone, etc). Little by little, this book built the word power for my child without stressing. Now his reading level is at the top of his class. His confidence is high. This book is an excellent tool for after-school enrichment.

    Editorial Review:

Teachers can build word power with these 24 ready-to-reproduce, 3-page lessons. Each lesson is packed with fun, research-based activities that help students to explore roots, prefixes, and suffixes; use students' prior knowledge for greater understanding.

A good resource 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I use this book every year in my Christmas Around the World unit. Overall it's a great resource. I like the variety of countries represented and the inclusion of crafts and recipes is great.
I do wish that the information was more suited for giving straight to students. It's not very Santa friendly. The book never outright states that Santa isn't real. But an alert child could infer it pretty well from the passages in this book.
Overall the recipes are great but some of them are a bit vague. Since these are going to be unfamiliar dishes to most of the cooks attempting them the directions should be pretty explicit.
All in all, even with it's weaknesses, I'd recommend this book.

Great for school 4 out of 5 stars.

Read and Write Mini-Books (word families) 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I have found this book to be helpful for using with my kindergarten class to work on word families. The children are very excited to learn that once they can spell (or read) a few words in a word family, they can spell (or read) many others with that same ending.

Each mini-book can be copied double-sided onto one page, and then cut apart and stapled to become an 8-page mini-book. This makes them a good choice if you are concerned about using too much paper or going over your copy budget.

interactive fun for reading and writing 5 out of 5 stars.

Children are excited about making and reading their own little books which they make. Funny pictures help them enjoy making additional words in each word family.

very easy readers 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Each of the little books not only uses a different word family, but also offers one or two new sight words. These are very short little books, great for the beginner reader that gets discouraged easily.
    A snake
    A snake wants to bake
A snake wants to bake a big cake
A snake wants to bake a big cake on a lake.
The last page offers the child a chance to fill in the first letter of the "ake" words.

The "eep" book goes like this
    The Sheep
    The sheep drove the jeep
The sheep drove the jeep and went beep
The sheep drove the jeep and went beep in his sleep.

    Well you get the idea.

This is a fine book for kids to learn and practice English grammars. Many kids read well, but cannot write decent sentences. An early start in grammar makes a big difference. The book supplies well-designed questions and multiple-choice problems to teach and enforce the essential language rules. They are vivid and interesting. My child has a much better writing after using this book. I hope it had more pages. For additional such practices, we also use a nice web site (www.beestar.org) that provides exercises similar to this book. They both do a fine job of improving kids' language level. Highly recommend.
