Re: Kaplan GMAT Premier Program 2009 Edition

It's amazing to me that a company of the stature of Kaplan would have so many errors in a book intended to train for a test. It's hard to have confidence in their services.

Here are some of the numerous errors I found in the math section of this book.
The math section is a pathetic study guide. The errors are so numerous, that it's hard to know when it's right. See below - and this is only as far as I got. I will return this poor "study guide" and request my money back.

I contacted Kaplan; they said they would have an errata sheet posted early Sept 2008; it's now mid-Sept, and no errata sheet is posted.

I'll try another publisher.

Page 272, prob 10, error in first line; fist x-intercept missing (3/2)
Page 279, prob 6; 8x-2 should be 8x-3
Page 289, prob 4; units are meters in the sketch and inches in answers
Page 322, prob 7; missing "+" sign in equation
Page 323, prob 4; indicates use of calculator, but GMAT instructions say no calculators are allowed

Page 326, prob 6; solution includes "y" in solution; there is no "y"
Page 328, prob 10; equation has both plus and minus signs, (x-+5)

Page 285, 30-60-90 example shows 1:1:sqrt2; should be 1:2:sqrt3
Page 299, prob 2; Greek letter for pi is "p" in answer E; confusing
Page 300, prob 3; Greek letter for pi is called "p"; confusing
Page 300, prob 4; Greek letter for pi is called "p"; confusing
Page 301, prob 5; missing info: need to tell me that A in on line OB
Page 305, prob 5; angle CDE and DEC are both 45 deg, but not drawn equal

The text is organized well and a great read if you are interested in Counseling theories. I purchased it for a graduate school class.

I purchased this book as a required textbook. The cover did have some picks and pocs on it. Considering that the book is grossly expensive, one would think that it would arrive in perfect condition.

Editorial Review:

Develop your own counseling style using Corey's bestselling THEORY AND PRACTICE OF COUNSELING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY. You will see the major theories of counseling (psychoanalytic, Adlerian, existential, person-centered, Gestalt, reality, behavior, cognitive-behavior, family systems, feminist and, and postmodern approaches) as they are used in practice through a case study focused on one client, "Stan." The case of "Stan" appears in each chapter so you can see how the theory presented in that chapter informs therapeutic decision-making. The new "Theory in Practice: The Case of Stan" DVD is an extension of the text. "At a Glance" charts pinpoint the major differences between theories in areas such as multicultural focus, basic philosophies, and limitations.

Editorial Review:

Professors Fischl and Paul explain law school exams in ways no one has before, all with an eye toward improving the reader's performance. The book begins by describing the difference between educational cultures that praise students for "right answers," and the law school culture that rewards nuanced analysis of ambiguous situations in which more than one approach may be correct. Enormous care is devoted to explaining precisely how and why legal analysis frequently produces such perplexing situations.

But the authors don't stop with mere description. Instead, Getting to Maybe teaches how to excel on law school exams by showing the reader how legal analysis can be brought to bear on examination problems. The book contains hints on studying and preparation that go well beyond conventional advice. The authors also illustrate how to argue both sides of a legal issue without appearing wishy-washy or indecisive. Above all, the book explains why exam questions may generate feelings of uncertainty or doubt about correct legal outcomes and how the student can turn these feelings to his or her advantage.

In sum, although the authors believe that no exam guide can substitute for a firm grasp of substantive material, readers who devote the necessary time to learning the law will find this book an invaluable guide to translating learning into better exam performance.

Editorial Review:

Boomers reinvented society. Now they’re reinventing themselves, and AARP wants to facilitate that process.
AARP Crash Course in Finding the Work You Love explores both the motivations and the methods of those taking part in the social phenomenon known as recareering. Whether they are old enough to have earned their AARP card or not, a new generation of American workers is no longer counting the days until retirement; instead they’re seeking greater fulfillment in their personal lives by tackling new—and often much more socially significant—work.
Switching careers is a challenge at any age, yet boomers may have more to overcome than their younger counterparts: They must beef up their education or seek out retraining; cope with seismic lifestyle shifts such as less income and a new circle of friends; and reconcile themselves to the fact that even the most rewarding position is no panacea for life’s problems.
Author Sam Greengard brings a wealth of knowledge to this timely topic: Since 1981 he has written about career issues for publications as diverse as The Chicago Tribune, Family Circle, The Los Angeles Times, MSNBC/MSN Online, Wired, and Workforce Management. Here, Greengard shows readers how to sort out their feelings about their existing career; successfully transition to a new one; and work toward a greater sense of balance in their daily lives. Profiles of recareering veterans show how others have attained their own goals. These are rounded out by tips, quizzes, worksheets, how-to sidebars, and other practical resources.
With this handbook to guide them, readers of any age can finally make the leap to finding the life’s work they will truly love.

Definitely a crucial book for any teenager who cares about his/her future! 5 out of 5 stars.
39 of 41 people found this review helpful.

Wow! I wish I had this wonderful book when I was a teenager.

I remember very vividly when I came across Richard Bolles' 'What Colour is Your Parachute', it was way back in the late 80's/early 90's. At that time, I was embarking on a journey to find out about what I wanted to do with the second half of my life.

Naturally, I was attracted to this new book when I saw it in my local bookstore. I am pleased to note that the author has now teamed up with Carol Christen, a career strategist & Jean Blomquist, a college counseller, to come out with this great guide to help teens zero in on their favourite skills & apply that knowledge to get the most out of school, set goals & pursue their dreams.

More importantly, this book actually brings back some sweet memories of what I have perused - pondered about & worked out - for the first time.

It is filled with interactive exercises, provoking worksheets & interesting profiles of young adults who have found their uniques paths in life, all beautifully structured in a three-part layout:

- Part I: Discovering Your Dream Job;
- Part II: On the Way to Your Future;
- Part III: Landing Your Dream Job & More;

With a track record of some thirty years in the career advising arena, the lead author's 'What Colour is your Parachute' has been recognised as the world's best selling job hunting book. To me, it is very much more than that - it's about you & your future; about exploring who you are, what's important to you & what you like to do.

I fully concur with the authors: Life is meant to be lived to the fullest.

In order to achieve a fulfilling life, all of us must do what we love & love what we do!

To sum up my review, this is definitely a crucial book for every teenager who cares about his/her future.

Attention: Mums & Dads, please go & buy this book for your teenaged kids as soon as possible!!! You will be ambly rewarded in the long term.

Funny book on serious topic 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This book is great for those k-3rd grade kids who don't seem to understand that not everyone wants them in their face. Lois goes about his day crashing into people (flying through space) and is told he would have to go to Personal Space Camp. He is all excited because he imagines that he'll be flying rockets or getting to eat astronaut's ice cream. When he sees hoola hoops on the floor, he is confused... I love the gray pictures of Lois's imagination and how he views his world (or more appropriately, his out-of-this-world) experiences. At the end he finally realizes that he had misunderstood what others had been saying all along. The humor is just what this topic needs and it allows the kids to grow without being embarrassed.

Editorial Review:

Louis is delighted to learn that his teacher has sent him to the principal's office to attend "Personal Space Camp." This book addresses the complex issue of respect for another's person's physical boundaries. Told from Louis' perspective, this story is a must-have resource for parents, teachers, and counselors who want to communicate the idea of personal space in a manner that connects with kids. Color. Grades K-3.

Just Do It... 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 32 people found this review helpful.

I have completely worn out my copy of this book. It is the simplest, clearest, most practical book on lean that you will ever find. The first time I used the Value Stream Mapping techniques outlined in this book, I identified an improvement that has dramatically reduced our inventory, reduced lead times and saved over $500K annually.

Section III, entitled, "What Makes A value Stream Lean" is especially helpful. By doing the mapping and working toward the seven guidelines outlined in this section, we have made dramatic progress in our lean transformation. Using "Learning To See" in conjunction with another offering from the Lean Enterprise Institute ("Making Material Flow"), you can transform your plant. The only other requirement... get out from behind your desk and just do it!

I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Editorial Review:

When John Shook worked at Toyota he noticed that the senior experts on the Toyota Production System often drew simple maps when on the shop floor. These maps showed the current physical flow of a product family and the information flow for that product family as they wound through a complex facility making many products.

Editorial Review:

Plenty of college admission guides promise to help students crack the Ivy League, but few of these have detailed knowledge to back up their advice. Michele Hernandez, on the other hand, is the ultimate insider. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Dartmouth College, she also worked as Dartmouth's assistant director of admissions for four years. In A Is for Admissions, Hernandez describes the step-by-step process Ivy League schools use to evaluate an application. Along the way she settles some ancient debates, including the comparative importance of SATs versus high-school grades, public versus private high schools, and extracurricular activities versus part-time employment. She evaluates every possible factor affecting chances for admission, including special categories of students such as recruited athletes, minority applicants, and legacies. Most dramatically, Hernandez reveals the precise mathematical formula used by admissions officers to rank applicants. Using her guidelines, readers can calculate their own AI (Academic Index) and--should their scores come up short--learn ways to compensate in other areas.

Refreshingly, Hernandez helps would-be Ivy Leaguers keep their goals in perspective. She strongly advises against "grade grubbing" or "working for the grade." If you think attending a top college is the key to success, Hernandez cautions that the Ivies may not be for you. "If your goal is to make money, but you don't enjoy studying or reading, don't waste your time by trying to get into an Ivy League or highly selective college.... The beauty of an Ivy League/highly selective education lies in the intellectual atmosphere.... It does not lie in the prestige of having a diploma from Princeton or Dartmouth on your wall." Levelheaded and clearly written, A Is for Admission is the perfect guide for the student (or parent) who has his eyes set on the stars.

Honest Review of GMAT Books! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

After going through all the GMAT books, here is my honest opinion about some of the most popular GMAT books:

Official Guide:
Pros - Excellent source of GMAT questions. Very well organized with real test like questions.
Cons - No review of any math content or test-taking strategies. Not enough explanations of practice questions.
Overall, the Official Guide is a must have for all test-takers. It will give you a good idea about the type of questions to expect on the GMAT; however, if you need more than just a bank of questions, you need to look at some other source.

Kaplan:
Pros - Good for additional practice questions as a supplement
Cons - Review of math content is not thorough but just the very basics. Not enough explanation of test taking strategies. Full of guessing techniques with no real mathematical solutions. Not good enough explanations of practice questions. Unrealistic questions.

Princeton:
Pros - Good for additional practice questions as a supplement
Cons - Review of math content is not thorough but just the very basics. Not enough explanation of test taking strategies. Full of guessing techniques with no real mathematical solutions. Not good enough explanations of practice questions. Weird sense of humor.

Barrons:
Pros - Good math review. Big list of questions. Good test taking strategies. Very well organized. This is by far the best of the all-in-one kinds of books.
Cons - Although the book has a good math review, it doesn't go deep enough into each concept. Not enough explanations to practice questions. Does not have a good section for logical reasoning (permutation, combination, probability, etc) questions, which is one of the most important question-type. Does not break down the concepts/questions step by step.

EZ Solutions (set of 9 books):
Pros - Thorough math review from A to Z. Effective test taking strategies. Abundant solved examples. Numerous practice exercises. Great practice question bank in basic and advanced workbooks.
As with most books, you are expected to already have a good knowledge about the various match concepts, but with these books, you can literally start from scratch and reach the most advanced level of the GMAT.
Cons - To get the best result from these books, you have to invest in buying several books (set of 9 books), but if you compare the cost and benefits, the benefits outweigh the cost, or you can buy a few not all. Missing the verbal section. This is not a good option if you are looking for a mediocre score or just looking for a very basic brush-up. Recommended for serious test takers only.

Some of the other books has no real content; whereas, there are some other books that I haven't yet had an opportunity to review, but may be some of them are good supplementary aids.

I hope my review will help some of you in making the right decision.

Editorial Review:

Features:

-- Targeted review of the math concepts students need to know

-- Hundreds of exercises to help readers assess their current skill level and focus study efforts, as well as explanations and practice for all the question types in the GMAT's quantitative section

-- Detailed answer explanations

-- Kaplan's proven score-raising strategies
