Great Text! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This was a very thorough and easy-to-read book about the various theories of counseling and psychotherapy. I, personally, often need "supplemental" things to go with a text to help me learn the material. This book did a great job of explaining the concepts, comparing and contrasting theories, and giving examples of practice and assessment. Although someone else that wrote a review didn't particularly care for the student manual, I found it extremely helpful while preparing for my exams. I read the chapters first, and actually enjoyed the readings, and found that "brushing up" with the student manual before my exam was very helpful, and reinforced the theoretical concepts. Also, the Case Study book was required for my class, and is an excellent source for understanding the theories "in action", so to speak. When learning these types of theories, it is very helpful having concrete examples to work with, and Corey does an excellent job with that. Over all, a great text, with lots of info that is clearly illustrated with examples and case studies.

Editorial Review:

This revision of Gerald Corey's best-selling text introduces students to the major theories of counseling (psychoanalytic, Adlerian, existential, person-centered, Gestalt, reality, behavior, cognitive-behavior, family systems, feminist and, NEW to this edition, post-modern approaches) and demonstrates how each theory can be applied to a single case ("Stan"). Reviewed by 27 of the field's leading experts, Corey's Seventh Edition covers the major concepts of counseling theories, shows students how to apply those theories in practice, and helps them learn to integrate the theories into an individualized counseling style. Incorporating the thinking, feeling, and behaving dimensions of human experience, Corey offers an easy-to-understand text that helps students compare and contrast the therapeutic models. This book is the center of a suite of products that include a revised student manual, a revised casebook, a companion text, and an all-new CD-ROM.

Great Resource! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I read this book through as soon as I received it. Tomlinson is well-respected in her field. Most everything I have read concerns gifted students. This is an excellent resource for ALL students. Differentiation is absolutely necessary in today's classrooms. If all students are to reach their full potential, we must meet them where they are -- and they are all over the place! With so many learners requiring different strategies, finding a way to reach every child is a daunting task. This book gives you the strategies in clear, concise language. The information can be adapted to any subject area or age group. I wish every teacher in my school would read this book!

Editorial Review:

For education courses in Educational Psychology, Advanced Educational Psychology, Differentiated Instruction, Inclusion/Mainstreaming, Mild/Moderate Disabilities Methods, or General Methods (K-12). In this brief Merrill/ASCD text, the leading authority on differentiation explains the most effective classroom-proven approaches for teachers to use in order to meet the instructional needs of every learner in any grade level. The author introduces vivid classroom examples of real teachers using differentiated instruction to effectively show readers what, how and why to differentiate instruction.

The Joy of Looking 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 30 people found this review helpful.

Kozol has tapped into the narcissism of modern teachers and their weird regard for themselves. Down at the "Teach for America" farm, the young Ivy Leaguers get the straight talk missing from the likes of Kozol. Teaching is a degraded profession, to be compared to bus driving and custodial work both in pay and in status. In fact, smart administrators now call teachers "education workers," just to take them down a notch or two. They are sick of the uppity types who think their jobs are important. Nobody respects them. Counselors tell it like it is: Get in, treat it like the Peace Corps, don't stay long enough for it to destroy your reputation. Put it on your resume and apply for law school. Spend the rest of your life telling people you miss the kids. Kozol has got all sorts of words of wisdom for the sad sacks who follow him into the playgrounds of the inner cities, but the bottom line is that his words support the status quo, where kids do as they like, while parents and administrators work together to make sure the teachers and not the kids get blamed for every failure. The only schools in America that have ever worked are those that kick out the brats who won't follow directions. Those are the schools to which the Roosevelts, the Bushes and the Clintons send their kids.

Editorial Review:

“Kozol’s love for his students is as joyful and genuine as his critiques
of the system are severe. He doesn’t pull punches.”
Washington Post

Jonathan Kozol’s most delightfully personal and revealing work to date takes the form of warm and friendly letters to Francesca, a young classroom teacher, offering encouragement and guidance and survival strategies for teachers of all ages in our nation’s public schools.

Really Excellent Book for Coaching Introduction 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

If you are new to the coaching topic, this book helps give you a general understanding to coaching using the GROW model. Very helpful!

Valuable coaching classic 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Whitmore has provided a very good secular overview and guide to coaching in Coaching for Performance (I am a Christian coach). It is easy to read and gives lots of examples of using coaching technique in everyday life and work. It appeals to me as a classic as Whitmore came in at the early days of coaching and writes with clarity and enthusiasm. In this edition outlines its development. I purchased this book as it was often quoted in the Life Caoching couse I studied as part of a theology degree.

As someone with a sporting background I find his many references to sports coaching quite natural, however I can see this as an irritation to anyone who has never experienced coaching in the sporting arena. These references however do add to the readers' understanding of coaching technique and practice. I would recommend this book to anyone new to coaching, but would suggest further study and supervised practice if you want to do more than simply use a few coaching techniques in your worlplace and everyday life.

Editorial Review:

Well structured, well written and practical in a gentle fashion. It is a good model for those wishing to develop their own facilitating and coaching skills.

Textbook 5 out of 5 stars.

This book came on time and was in great condtion. Thanks so much for helping me out, textbooks are so expensive anymore, I know I can always find quality books at amazon.com, and the sellers are always the best!

Helpful but lengthy and dry 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book has so much great information but it is presented in such a way that it can be difficult to get into. The chapters could be much more concise. Also, as an art therapy student I would appreciate a picture or a graph or any kind of visual to go along with what I am reading...but there are none! The author writes well but the overall read and content of the book is dry.

Editorial Review:

Develop your own counseling style using Corey's bestselling THEORY AND PRACTICE OF COUNSELING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY. You will see the major theories of counseling (psychoanalytic, Adlerian, existential, person-centered, Gestalt, reality, behavior, cognitive-behavior, family systems, feminist and, and postmodern approaches) as they are used in practice through a case study focused on one client, "Stan." The case of "Stan" appears in each chapter so you can see how the theory presented in that chapter informs therapeutic decision-making. The new "Theory in Practice: The Case of Stan" DVD is an extension of the text. "At a Glance" charts pinpoint the major differences between theories in areas such as multicultural focus, basic philosophies, and limitations.

Years pass and still this gleams 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

There are a few things about this book that should be said right away. First, this is not really an introductory book to ABA, but works as a book that ties so many theories together. That means that it could be used in conjunction with many starter ABA books, allowing its reader to get a feel of just what ABA means. The book also works on both a Masters and a PhD level when it comes to conceptual decision/ debate (an oddity if I do say so myself), and covers so many things that cheaper guides seem to omit. This could mean bypassing some causal arena or not talking about something as simple as the C.A.R.R., but these tiny slips are really not so tiny when you think about them.

There are plenty of great things listed about this book in other reviews, so I'll skip the addition of chapter content and the addition of material and its praise. Instead, I'll add that this is one of the few books that can make or break you when it comes to trying to get licensure. In fact, this book has been listed as one of the top 10 preparation guides to use before testing, and that is some high praise considering how vaunted the test actually is. More than this, however, is the fact that this is a tool that can help you in real life scenarios and, truthfully, that is more important than being able to simply pass tests. In samples as heterogeneous as those seen in autism, you really need to know how to handle multiple scenarios to make a difference.

If you are looking for a navigation tool to help with the rocky waters of autism, this is a great book to acquire. It may have a price tag attached, but it proves invaluable in the long run and that matters more than anything.
Recommended for the student in all of us.

So you want to learn how to map the value stream? 5 out of 5 stars.
24 of 27 people found this review helpful.

This is definitely THE starter book to learn vsm. Yes more examples would help, and yes so much information is covered by such little prose. The more I learn and practice lean, The more I am convinced of the importance in using value stream mapping to insure that the lean implementation process benefits the value stream (the so called critical path of the production process).
This key concept is where Six Sigma fails, and that is how do you select a Six Sigma Project that is going to impact the value stream?
The authors almost dare you to work through the ONE example you are to analyze on your own but LEARNING TO SEE starts you on the way to becoming a lean sensei.
STUDY STUDY STUDY this book.

Editorial Review:

When John Shook worked at Toyota he noticed that the senior experts on the Toyota Production System often drew simple maps when on the shop floor. These maps showed the current physical flow of a product family and the information flow for that product family as they wound through a complex facility making many products.

Excellent, thorough, sensitive 5 out of 5 stars.

I found this book deeply satisfying as a way to deepen my coaching skills. It's about the philosophy behind coaching, and has great dialogues with clients, from which I learned a lot. Warm, engaging, and based in the literature, this book is sensitive to what coaches can do to really benefit their clients.

Feeds the Intellect and Warms the Heart 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Patrick Williams and Diane Menendez succeeded in creating a masterful volume - Becoming a Professional Life Coach - that surpasses in its depth and scope any other coaching book that I have read to date.
Beginning with an in depth history of development of coaching and its evolution from therapy, it continues highlighting use of theories of human development i.e. Moslow, Robert Kegan, and Ken Wilbur.
The authors introduce the reader to fundamental concepts and skills of coaching to the most advanced concepts of human potential, the importance of interplay of body, human emotions and perception, values, life purpose
and, importantly, to the healing powers of love.
Every coach, regardless of specialty, will be enriched each time the book is referenced.

Funny book on serious topic 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This book is great for those k-3rd grade kids who don't seem to understand that not everyone wants them in their face. Lois goes about his day crashing into people (flying through space) and is told he would have to go to Personal Space Camp. He is all excited because he imagines that he'll be flying rockets or getting to eat astronaut's ice cream. When he sees hoola hoops on the floor, he is confused... I love the gray pictures of Lois's imagination and how he views his world (or more appropriately, his out-of-this-world) experiences. At the end he finally realizes that he had misunderstood what others had been saying all along. The humor is just what this topic needs and it allows the kids to grow without being embarrassed.

Editorial Review:

LOUIS IS BACK! AND THIS TIME, HE'S LEARNING ALL ABOUT PERSONAL SPACE. LOUIS, A SELF-TAUGHT SPACE EXPERT IS DELIGHTED TO LEARN THAT HIS TEACHER HAS SENT HIM TO THE PRINCIPAL S OFFICE TO ATTEND PERSONAL SPACE CAMP. EAGER TO LEARN MORE ABOUT LUNAR LANDINGS, SPACE SUITS, AND OTHER COSMIC CONCEPTS, LOUIS SOON DISCOVERS THAT HE HAS MUCH TO LEARN ABOUT PERSONAL SPACE RIGHT HERE ON EARTH. WRITTEN WITH STYLE, WIT, AND RHYTHM, PERSONAL SPACE CAMP ADDRESSES THE COMPLEX ISSUE OF RESPECT FOR ANOTHER PERSON S PHYSICAL BOUNDARIES. TOLD FROM LOUIS PERSPECTIVE, THIS STORY IS A MUST-HAVE RESOURCE FOR PARENTS, TEACHERS, AND COUNSELORS WHO WANT TO COMMUNICATE THE IDEA OF PERSONAL SPACE IN A MANNER THAT CONNECTS WITH KIDS.
