Editorial Review:

When award-winning educator and activist Geoff Canada was growing up in the Bronx, the "sidewalk" boys learned the codes of the block from their elders and were ranked--and to some degree protected--through the rituals of fist, stick, and knife. Weaving in and out of his stark storytelling is a cogent anaylsis of how the complicity of gun manufacturers turned this contained violence into today's world of drive-by shootings and automatic weapons.

A Teacher's Guide for this book is available.

"The vignettes band together with a kind of clarifying momentum, so that the result is something more. . . . A beacon."

--New York Times Book Review
"A more powerful depiction of the tragic life of urban children and a more compelling plea to end' America's war against itself' cannot be imagined.

--Publishers Weekly
"Geoff Canada has been cultivating virtue, and hope, in children for the past 10 years."

--Newsweek
"A slim, revealing volume that should be required reading for anyone who was ever a child, for anyone who has ever negotiated the complicated hierarchy of 'rep' and revenge on city streets."

--Boston Globe
"Part memoir, part social treatise, a wholly sobering view of inner-city violence and the codes surrounding it."

Global Consultant = Global Success 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The Global Consultant contains excellent pragmatic advice on how to travel. I wish I had read this book before doing a world tour this summer (but the book wasn't out yet). It is an easy read with interesting stories that exemplify the authors' points about how to travel with less stress, reduce cell phone roaming charges, arrive well rested, enjoy your locations, and grow personally and professionally from the experience. In typical Alan Weiss style, it has strong marketing content that will help you expand your brand and reach, enhance your value to clients, price based on that value and how to get paid in foreign currencies. The strongest chapter was on "The Human Software for Global Consulting." The fourth paragraph in this chapter is an excellent business philosophy and worth many times the price of this book. If you want to push yourself beyond your comfort zone and grow your brand, this is a timely resource for our challenging economies.

Editorial Review:

In a true "flat earth" there are no borders or impediments to importing and exporting knowledge. Such knowledge transfer, if recorded, would more than offset the current US trade deficit and balance of trade figures. The audience for this book is primarily solo or small-practice consultants (and those considering independent consulting) who seek the wealth, experience, and gratification of consulting internationally. Both "on the ground" and remote techniques are addressed, so the peripatetic and the home-anchored can achieve significant new goals, adventures and growth-experiences.

Editorial Review:

So, you finally got that promotion. You’re the boss now. The supervisor. The manager. The captain. The taskmaster. Those days of taking orders, running errands, and clock-watching are over. As exciting as all this might seem, once the rush of the promotion is over, you might be scratching your head wondering exactly what to do. Being the boss is never easy, but it's twice as hard for a woman. It seems like there's no middle ground. Either you're the dragon lady who rules with an iron fist or the mousey girl who gets drowned out at every meeting. When a woman wields authority and dares to make tough decisions, how often is the "B-word" bandied about by her employees? How can she strike that balance between pushover and dictator?

Fear not. You can do the job. All you need is a little helpful advice to send you on your way. Whether you supervise two as a shift manager or lord over an entire corporate empire, Caitlin Friedman and Kim Yorio will show you how to step gracefully into your new position of power. They’ll teach you how to motivate your team without alienating them, how to delegate without feeling guilty, how to deal with office politics and how to handle evaluations, promotions, and even firings. And for those of you who are already running the show, they can help you become the mentor your employees deserve.

Inside, there are self-assessment questionnaires to help you find out where you land on the bitch or wimp scale; interviews with prominent female bosses, human-resources directors, and therapists; and advice from a whole host of experts. In addition, there are funny and informative checklists and tips to make sure you’re the Good Witch around the office and not the Big Bitch. And, most important, Caitlin and Kim will teach you the secrets to owning your role and loving it. You’ve earned your promotion, so enjoy it!

Editorial Review:

The second edition of this thorough reference is an invaluable tool for assessing cosmetic products, addressing both the quality of the product and the effect it has on the skin. Since a product's ultimate purpose is to benefit the skin, it is crucial to have an understanding of how the skin works, how and why a product may or may not penetrate it, and what care individual skin types and conditions may require. It is difficult to discuss product ingredients without correlating product performance to skin function. An expanded section on skin physiology and chemical concepts enables the reader to better understand product performance through a thorough explanation of how chemicals and ingredients interact. The various skin types, conditions, and appropriate ingredients for treatments provide a quick reference to address clients' needs. This enlarged second edition contains over 2,000 ingredients including 200 new and updated entries. Expanded information on antioxidants and their stability, new discussion on aging and sensitive skin, and function of SPF and new sunblock ingredients offering full spectrum sunscreen and sunblock for both UVA and UVB rays has been added.

AUTHOR NEEDS TO GROW UP A BIT... 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This is not an educator calling for change, this is a self-centered child that wants licentiousness, not liberty. She thinks all kids are able to be free. She forgets the debt they owe to the past. Everything we have today, material and otherwise, is due to the efforts of our ancestors, for better or for worse. When we are infants, we are helpless, so our parents feed us and take care of us. Because of these facts, we should not grow up, as the author suggests, to do anything we want. Instead, we should learn so that we can claim the liberty to contribute to society in the manner we choose, without being subserviant to any person, idea, or substance. This is a different concept, entirely. The author justs wants to say, "to hell with everything, it is all about me." This is immature. Take the experimentation with drugs, for example. That is not freedom. When you become addicted, then you are still a slave. The author wants freedom (licentiousness), BUT SHE NEGLECTS HER RESPONSIBILITIES AND OBLIGATIONS that we ALL owe as a debt to the past. This is the difference - being free to do what you want, versus being free to satisfy obligations and responsibilities in you own way, not the way dictated by someone else, such as a governmental bureaucrat.

I agree that the school system is beyond fixing. I believe in educating yourself. However, due to inexperience, you need the guidance of a mentor. A good mentor will give you access to the best thinking of the past, while still allowing you to do the work of educating yourself. No man is an island unto himself, but this author would have everyone running around doing whatever they wanted. As I said, we owe a debt to the past, and that debt is satisfied by having the liberty to reach your fullest potential in a manner of your choosing, not to experiment with drugs and become a burden on society. If education were of the mentor type, we might have less people dependent on welfare and government for their needs.

This author's writings suggest a child-like being who is self-centered, irresponsible, immature, and without character. Therefore, she has no business telling other children how to live their lives. I am all for freedom, but only if one is adult enough to know that our ancestors gave us that freedom, so we must use it to become self-reliant, productive, and decent people who are indeed able to think for themselves. They would not be slaves to anybody or anything (like drugs).

Editorial Review:

An estimated 700,000 American children are now taught at home. This book tells teens how to take control of their lives and get a "real life." Young people can reclaim their natural ability to teach themselves and design a personalized education program. Grace Llewellyn explains the entire process, from making the decision to quit school, to discovering the learning opportunities available.

Ideal job-hunting resource for creatives 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Eikleberry's research is based on the Holland Codes, three-letter codes designed to describe your work interests. You take an extensive interest test and get a three-letter code that describes, in order from most applicable to least, the three areas out of six that you have the most interest in. The idea is that there are six basic personality types when it comes to work, but that all of us possess some mixture of those types, and it's most useful to look at those three that best describe each of us. The six types are artistic, social, investigative, realistic, conventional, and enterprising.

The author does a wonderful job of addressing the fact that our interests aren't the only considerations we have when looking for a job. For instance, many people aren't happy unless they can work with people who have similar values to theirs, even if it means working at a job that doesn't perfectly suit them. Most people also need to take salary into account, since they have to make a living at what they do, and many artistic occupations don't pay much.

There's information on creative career choices that might support you fully; taking "normal" jobs as day jobs and working on your art in your own time; and composing your own career. The author uses inspiring anecdotes from people who've created whole new careers for themselves to show us that we can do what we're interested in, even if there doesn't seem to be a place for it right now.

This is a wonderful, focused, goal-directed book that should be able to help nearly any confused creative person find a better direction in life. It doesn't promise to find your dream job in five minutes, but then if it did, it would be lying--its purpose is to help you gradually find a rewarding and satisfying career.

Editorial Review:

You don't have to stifle your creative impulses to pay the bills. For anyone who's ever been told, "Don't quit your day job," career counselor Carol Eikleberry is here to say, "Pursue your dreams!" Now in its third edition, her inspiring guide provides knowledgeable career guidance, real-life success stories, and eye-opening self-evaluation tools to help artistic individuals figure out how to remain different, unconventional, and hard-to-categorize while finding work they love.
