Useful Book 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I found the first few chapters of this book very useful for my teaching practice but I never finished it. The truth is it started to get too indirect with the illustrations - the paedagogical links were not clear. And generally the book slowed up as it progressed from easy reading to something else.

Teaching with Love and Logic 5 out of 5 stars.

Change your mind 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is a profound little book that makes a cogent argument for effective change in individual and social thought processes. It will change the way you think about oppression and what it actually is for those who are oppressed. This is a book for everyone but especially for those who want to make a change for the better in themselves and the society at large. A thought provoking and challenging book!

Editorial Review:

This text argues that the ignorance and lethargy of the poor are the direct result of the whole economic, social and political domination. By being kept in a situation in which it is practically impossible to achieve a critical awareness and response the disadvantaged are kept "submerged". The book suggests that in some countries the oppressors use the system to maintain this "culture of silence". Through the right kind of education, the book suggests, avoiding authoritarian teacher-pupil models and based on the actual experiences of students and on continual shared investigation, every human being, no matter how impoverished or illiterate, can develop a new awareness of self, and the right to be heard.

Editorial Review:

"Different minds learn differently," writes Dr. Mel Levine, one of the best-known learning experts and pediatricians in America today. Some students are strong in certain areas and some are strong in others, but no one is equally capable in all. Yet most schools still cling to a one-size-fits-all education philosophy. As a result, many children struggle because their learning patterns don't fit the way they are being taught.

In his #1 New York Times bestseller A Mind at a Time, Dr. Levine shows parents and those who care for children how to identify these individual learning patterns, explaining how they can strengthen a child's abilities and either bypass or help overcome the child's weaknesses, producing positive results instead of repeated frustration and failure.

Consistent progress can result when we understand that not every child can do equally well in every type of learning and begin to pay more attention to individual learning patterns -- and individual minds -- so that we can maximize children's success and gratification in life. In A Mind at a Time Dr. Levine shows us how.

If you are interested in learning more about coaching someone on how to have a fuller live and/or achieve their goals this is a great book for you. I also strongly recommend taking the Co-Active Coaching classes offered by the Coaches Training Institute. During each level of the classes I felt I had learned so much about coaching, myself and all of the wonderful folks in my classes that even if I wasn't studying to become a coach, this program was so well worth it.

A newly revised edition of the book that helped define the coaching profession, Co-Active Coaching captures the essence of what it takes to design and maintain successful, collaborative, and empowering coaching relationships. The authors describe in detail their flexible and adaptive model-placing the client's agenda at the heart of the coaching partnership, define the skills required for success, provide dozens of sample coaching conversations, and a power-packed Coach's Toolkit of over 35 exercises, questionnaires, checklists, and forms to make these proven principles and techniques eminently practical and immediately actionable.

A Unique, Beautiful Book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Well, I certainly don't know how it is possible that I have not read STELLALUNA, by Janell Cannon, until now. I recently purchased this very popular children's book for my three year old daughter, on the strong recommendation of a friend. STELLALUNA is a lovely, touching story, and both my daughter and I are enjoying it very much.

A young fruit bat named Stellaluna is separated from her mother and winds up in a nest of baby birds. The mother bird, finding another baby in her nest, feeds and raises Stellaluna along side her own babies, Flitter, Flap, and Pip. But mother bird doesn't know anything about being a bat, only a bird, so she teaches Stellaluna to be the best bird a bat can be. Stellaluna learns to eat bugs, sleep right side up, and fly during the day. She is not a graceful bird, and she doesn't like the bugs, but Stellaluna tries very hard to be like her nest mates. In the end, Stellaluna is reunited with her family and learns what it means to be a beautiful and graceful bat. But she remembers her bird family, and knows that she, Flitter, Flap, and Pip will always be friends.

This sweet little book is a new take on the story of the ugly duckling. While Stellaluna was a clumsy bird, she certainly is a graceful bat. Likewise, her bird friends can't do a lot of bat things, but they are perfect at being beautiful birds. STELLALUNA is a very simple story that teaches many great lessons. Be kind to others. Be yourself. Being different doesn't mean you can't be friends.

STELLALUNA's illustrations are quite lovely...they simply glow. The soft muted colors, the rich texture, and intricate details bring this story to life. The expressions on the faces of the bats and birds make it easy for young children to relate to these characters. "Look, Mommy," said my wee one, "look how happy Stellaluna is! She found her mommy!"

STELLALUNA is a charming tale that makes these little fruit bats seem cute and sweet, and a lot less icky. With 2 pages of bat notes at the end, this book tries to teach children (and adults!) the truth about bats and to dispel some of the negative feelings that have built up around them. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Stellaluna, a young fruit bat, is adopted by a family of birds and soon discovers that she is a bat.

Editorial Review:

With four simple truths as his framework, Charles Murray, the bestselling coauthor of The Bell Curve, sweeps away the hypocrisy, wishful thinking, and upside-down priorities that grip America’s educational establishment.

Ability varies. Children differ in their ability to learn academic material. Doing our best for every child requires, above all else, that we embrace that simplest of truths. America’s educational system does its best to ignore it.

Half of the children are below average. Many children cannot learn more than rudimentary reading and math. Real Education reviews what we know about the limits of what schools can do and the results of four decades of policies that require schools to divert huge resources to unattainable goals.

Too many people are going to college. Almost everyone should get training beyond high school, but the number of students who want, need, or can profit from four years of residential education at the college level is a fraction of the number of young people who are struggling to get a degree. We have set up a standard known as the BA, stripped it of its traditional content, and made it an artificial job qualification. Then we stigmatize everyone who doesn’t get one. For most of America’s young people, today’s college system is a punishing anachronism.

America’s future depends on how we educate the academically gifted. An elite already runs the country, whether we like it or not. Since everything we watch, hear, and read is produced by that elite, and since every business and government department is run by that elite, it is time to start thinking about the kind of education needed by the young people who will run the country. The task is not to give them more advanced technical training, but to give them an education that will make them into wiser adults; not to pamper them, but to hold their feet to the fire.

The good news is that change is not only possible but already happening. Real Education describes the technological and economic trends that are creating options for parents who want the right education for their children, teachers who want to be free to teach again, and young people who want to find something they love doing and learn how to do it well. These are the people for whom Real Education was written. It is they, not the politicians or the educational establishment, who will bring American schools back to reality.

Twenty-four years ago, Charles Murray’s Losing Ground changed the way the nation thought about welfare. Real Education is about to do the same thing for America’s schools.

Editorial Review:

The highly anticipated second edition of Understanding by Design poses the core, essential questions of understanding and design, and provides readers with practical solutions for the teacher-designer.  The book opens by analyzing the logic of backward design as an alternative to coverage and activity-oriented plans.  Though backward from habit, this approach brings more focus and coherence to instruction.  The book proposes a multifaceted approach, with the six “facets” of understanding.  The facets combine with backward design to provide a powerful, expanded array of practical tools and strategies for designing curriculum, instruction, and assessments that lead students at all grade levels to genuine understanding.  The second edition, a refined work, has been thoroughly and extensively revised, updated, and expanded, including improvement of the UbD Template, the key terms of UbD, dozens of worksheets, and some of the larger concepts. The authors have successfully put together a text that demonstrates what best practice in the design of learning looks like, enhancing for its audience their capability for creating more engaging and effective learning, whether the student is a third grader, a college freshman, or a faculty member.
