Perfect for AFAST 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book to study for the AFAST exam. All the sections in this book mirror the fomrat of the AFAST. However, their were some slight differences:

1) The pictures in the Instrument Comprehension portion of the practice exam are extremely dated in comparison to the actual test.
2) The actual AFAST helicopter knowledge questions seemed too easy in comparison to the ARCO study guide.
3) The cyclic orientation questions were easier on the AFAST.
4) The mechanical functions portion had several questions about boats and ships, which were not in the ARCO study guide.

All the personal questions and the complex movements were pretty much exactly the same as the AFAST. Making note cards for the complex movements is a good idea. I also purchased PRINCIPLES OF HELICOPTER FLIGHT to assist with my helicopter knowledge. The diagrams, explanations, and glossary words helped me out tremendously in that book.

Overall this ARCO study guide is great for the AFAST. I scored a 134 on the exam thanks to this book.

Editorial Review:

The highly anticipated second edition of Understanding by Design poses the core, essential questions of understanding and design, and provides readers with practical solutions for the teacher-designer. The book opens by analyzing the logic of backward design as an alternative to coverage and activity-oriented plans. Though backward from habit, this approach brings more focus and coherence to instruction. The book proposes a multifaceted approach, with the six “facets” of understanding. The facets combine with backward design to provide a powerful, expanded array of practical tools and strategies for designing curriculum, instruction, and assessments that lead students at all grade levels to genuine understanding. The second edition, a refined work, has been thoroughly and extensively revised, updated, and expanded, including improvement of the UbD Template, the key terms of UbD, dozens of worksheets, and some of the larger concepts. The authors have successfully put together a text that demonstrates what best practice in the design of learning looks like, enhancing for its audience their capability for creating more engaging and effective learning, whether the student is a third grader, a college freshman, or a faculty member.

Great Assessment Tool 4 out of 5 stars.

If you are familiar at all with the Flynt & Cooter IRI, you will love the QRI-4. You have stories with pictures, and without pictures, and now you do not need to find words lists like "San Diego Quick." This books gives you everything you need. Why didn't I give it a 5 then? I wish they would have organized it better than they did.

effective test preparation 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

In the past, I did not feel like children should use test workbooks this early. After we enrolled in Beestar weekly reading program (an excellent web site http://www.beestar.org), we realize that there are so many kids doing so well. No wonder the standard tests keep raising the bar. A low expectation from parents only leads to low achieving children. This book boosts your child's vocabulary, reading, and test taking skills effectively. It gives you a good chance to know how much your child learned in school. No matter how he was taught, the book would cover the bases and practice what he learned. We enjoyed this fine book very much!

Editorial Review:

According to author Mike Schmoker, there is a yawning gap between the most well-known essential practices and the reality of most classrooms. This gap persists despite the hard, often heroic work done by many teachers and administrators. Schmoker believes that teachers and administrators may know what the best practices are, but they aren’t using them or reinforcing them consistently. He asserts that our schools are protected by a buffer—a protective barrier that prevents scrutiny of instruction by outsiders. The buffer exists within the school as well. Teachers often know only what is going on in their classrooms—and they may be completely in the dark about what other teachers in the school are doing. Even principals, says Schmoker, don’t have a clear view of the daily practices of teaching and learning in their schools.

Schmoker suggests that we need to get beyond this buffer to confront the truth about what is happening in classrooms, and to allow teachers to learn from each other and to be supervised properly. He outlines a plan that focuses on the importance of consistent curriculum, authentic literacy education, and professional learning communities for teachers.

What will students get out of this new approach? Learning for life. Schmoker argues passionately that students become learners for life when they have more opportunities to engage in strategic reading, writing with explicit guidance, and argument and discussion.

Through strong teamwork, true leadership, and authentic learning, schools and their students can reach new heights. Results Now is a rally cry for educators to focus on what counts. If they do, Schmoker promises, the entire school community can count on unprecedented achievements.

Excellent source of material!!! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

"Cracking the CBEST" book is an excellent source of material. It explains in great detail how to solve the problems of reading, mathematics, and writing. Though the methods of cracking the problems are simple, it gave me confidence that under stress of test taking I can succeed because the solutions do not bombard you with over explanations. Everything is simply laid out and I felt that I didn't have to guess for the answers because the solutions teaches you how to approach each problem. I felt confident taking the two tests at the end of the book and even scored better on the second test! For someone who suffers from test anxiety, I feel confident taking the CBEST test next week because now I have the tools and the positive attitude to follow through. And that's no easy task for me! I say buy this book because you will not regret it.

Editorial Review:

If It's on the CBEST, It's in This Book
We don't try to teach you everything there is to know about mathematics, reading, and writing –only the techniques you'll need to score higher on the CBEST. There's a big difference. In Cracking the CBEST, we'll teach you how to think like the test writers and

·Eliminate answer choices that look right but are planted to fool you
·Prepare for the new challenges of the revised CBEST
·Raise your score by mastering the critical analysis and evaluation area of the reading section
·Ace the math section by knowing what to expect

This book includes 2 full-length practice CBEST exams. All of our practice questions are just like the ones you’ll see on the actual CBEST, and we fully explain every solution.

Good Book. 4 out of 5 stars.

For most people attempting to get into OCS, OCC, or the like this book will be valuable to you. However, I will give you this much this book is great for the standard officer testing in that it covers what is basically the officer equivalent of the ASVAB. However, if you are applying to the Air Force or if you are interested in being a pilot buy Arco's Military Flight Aptitude Test book. Officer tests like the AFOQT are desgined to check for pilot and navigator candidacy so it is recommended that if you are looking into a job like that or are applying to a branch like that then I recommend that book. However if you are joing the Army, Marines, or Navy and instead are interested in other fields this book will give you the chance you need to succeed.

Editorial Review:

Every year, the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard commissions 23,000 new officers. In this guide, a retired Army colonel and former Chief of the Examining Division of the New York City Department of Personnel gives candidates the preparation they need to achieve high scores on the required qualifying exam. Key topics for each branch-specific test are covered in full detail—from verbal reasoning and math to mechanics and electronics. Test-takers will also find the latest information on career opportunities. Offers test preparation for officer qualifying exams for all five branches of the military as well as job descriptions.

Summer Reading for Teachers (or Weekend Reading, If Summer's Over!) 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Just out in 2006, Rick Wormeli's FAIR ISN'T ALWAYS EQUAL has the latest research on teaching (especially middle and high school) pulled together nicely in one 200-page package. For me, a lot of it was necessary review and reaffirmation of differentiated instruction, standards-based instruction, and various strategies I've read about but haven't gotten around to using. For beginning teachers or veteran teachers whose schools are converting to the standards-based and/or differentiated instruction mode of instructing, it is a terrific primer and source of discussion.

That's all well and good (and a terrific learning tool for teachers), but what really appeals is how Wormeli wades into some hot-button topics like grading (he calls it the "elephant in the room" we don't want to discuss). In addition to issues of assessment, fairness, and mastery teaching, Wormeli brings up whether or not we should grade participation, effort, behavior, and attendance. My school has been debating this very topic of late, and Wormeli not only provides both points of view, he dives into the debate fearlessly by taking a stand and giving a well-reasoned defense of his view.

In addition, there's loads of practical stuff on how to teach students of various abilities, how to keep a grade book, how to structure report cards, and how to create fair tests.

This would be a great professional reading "book group" choice for teachers to read, annotate, then discuss. As it uses the "See Inside" feature here at amazon, I recommend you check out the Table of Contents for a look at what's inside. It won't disappoint.

Practical Research: Planning and Design 5 out of 5 stars.

A great book for a graduate student like me. It helps you how to pick a topic, have some questions concerning a topic, and make them into a research that is in your words. It is an excellent book for a beginning researcher, guiding him or her step by step, through the entire research process with practical suggestions. It is a great book if you want to have a quality research in any discipline. Good luck.

Editorial Review:

Written in uncommonly engaging, lucid, and elegant prose, this book is an “understand-it-yourself, do-it-yourself” manual designed to help readers understand the fundamental structure of quality research and the methodical process that leads to genuinely significant results.

It guides the reader, step-by-step, from the selection of a problem to study, through the process of conducting authentic research, to the preparation of a completed report, with practical suggestions based on a solid theoretical framework and sound pedagogy. This book will show readers two things: 1) that quality research demands planning and design; and, 2) how their own research projects can be executed effectively and professionally. For researchers and research analysts in any discipline.

Great Quick Review and Practice Tests 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

We love the "Dummies" series for their humor and easy-to-read-and-understand qualties. This one is no exception. It should be noted, however, that this book is NOT a complete study course, but rather a brush-up review with two full practice tests. The practice tests then have detailed explanations for each question as to why it is the right answer. If you think you basically know the material and just need help preparing for the test itself, this is the book for you, especially if you don't have months to prepare. If you are looking for a full study course, I recommend McGraw-Hill's GED : The Most Complete and Reliable Study Program for the GED Tests. It is a huge, complete book, but the pre-test helps you zone in on the areas you need to study the most.
