Editorial Review:

"An excellent introduction to using SPSS for data analysis...extremely useful for undergraduate students, and covers a good range of material often not found in competing texts. It provides a self-contained resource itself, with more than simply (detailed and clear) step-by-step descriptions of statistical procedures in SPSS. There is also a wealth of tips and advice, and for each statistical technique a brief, but consistently reliable, explanation is provided." - George Dunbar, University of Warwick

"This book is an excellent addition to the research methods literature. It presents the research process, research strategy and SPSS techniques in manageable steps offering clear advice, useful tips and discussion of relevant issues such as assumptions and effect size...this text is written in an encouraging and supportive style. I believe students will read and learn with this book." - David Cairns, Macquarie University, Australia

The SPSS Survival Manual throws a lifeline to students and researchers grappling with SPSS. Written in a friendly, jargon-free style, it demystifies statistics and data analysis by guiding you through the entire research process and helping you to choose the right statistical technique for your project. From the formulation of research questions, to the design of the study and analysis of data, to reporting the results, Julie Pallant discusses basic and advanced statistical techniques. She outlines each technique clearly, with step-by-step procedures for performing the analysis, a detailed guide to interpreting SPSS output and an example of how to present the results in a report. The user-friendliness of the manual is enhanced by spiral binding which makes it easy to use at a computer. A recommended reading section points the reader towards additional sources of advice. Illustrated with screen grabs, examples of output and tips, and supported by a website (www.openup.co.uk/spss) with sample data and guidelines on report writing, the SPSS Survival Manual can be used by students and researchers at any level alongside any major statistics textbook.

There is no picture of the text because on the front it says it's the international student version for use outside the US. Very misleading information on the site.

A+ shape, but different version 4 out of 5 stars.

This book was required for one of my grad classes and it came in A+ shape, however, I was shocked to see that it was an International Version. This was not stated anywhere in the description. Luckily it had the same content but I wish that would have been described.

Yes! Great job! 5 out of 5 stars.

This was a great experience. The book arrived on time and in great shape. I love it when online shopping works out. I'll be shopping with them again. The book is already in use and looks great.

Editorial Review:

This is a comprehensive, flexible introduction to educational research. Its thorough coverage of the steps in the research process (part II), which includes end-of-chapter work sheets, make it suitable for courses that focus on doing research. It's coverage of the six most widely used research methodologies (part III), which includes step-by-step analyses of real research articles, makes it suitable for courses that stress how to read and understand research.

Revolutionary teaching! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The concepts in this book, along with those found in Larry's other book, Unwrapping the Standards, can revolutionize the way state standards are met in the classroom. I recently had the honor of meeting Larry in person and taking a four day workshop from him. He is a wonderful human being who is passionate about teaching children in a manner that actually matters. I have implemented some of Larry's strategies in my own classroom, and my students found them engaging and exciting. These books are well written and packed with information. Although I would recommend taking a workshop from Larry in order to make the best use of the books, one could certainly read the books independently and use them effectively.

Editorial Review:

Power Standards is a step-by-step, practical manual that explains how educators can distinguish the Power Standards--standards that are absolutely necessary for student success--from those that are nice to know. Larry Ainsworth shows all educators not only how to create a prioritized subset of their own state or district standards, but also how to use these Power Standards to guide the development of meaningful curriculum and assessment. The straightforward and easy-to-read format enables readers to immediately apply these proven, practical strategies and to significantly improve achievement for all students--by first identifying the standards that matter the most!

I bought this book last semester for a grad course. I have to confess that I hardly read it but it was useful and intersting (the little I read).Sold it. This semester I am taking a research class and have to finish my paper by may 29. My research teacher suggested that I buy this bok to help me with certain issues. Gosh, buying it again. This time I am keeping it for good. other classmates told me the book was great as well.
We'll see...

Editorial Review:

"The book is a concise and very readable guide to case study research. It includes a good introduction to the theoretical principles underlying qualitative research, and discusses a wide range of qualitative approaches, namely naturalistic, holistic, ethnographic, phenomenological and biographic research methods. . . . Stake offers some useful practical advice, for example, on how to conduct in-depth interviews, how to analyze qualitative data and on report writing. . . . Stake writes in a rather unusual and very personal style but this makes the text very readable. The author’s obvious passion for research makes the text even more enjoyable and stimulating. . . . the book. . . seems particularly appropriate for those undertaking this type of research in the fields of education and social policy."

--Ivana La Valle in Social Research Association News

"It is gratifying to encounter a text so cogently advocating the case study method (aka: naturalistic fieldwork) as a legitimate knowledge-enhancing endeavor."

--Sala Horowitz in Academic Library Book Review

"I have just finished a qualitative case study based almost entirely on interviews with engineering students. The two sources on which I depended most heavily were Robert E. Stake’s The Art of Case Study Research and Harry F. Wolcott’s Writing Up Qualitative Research. I have heard others sing the praises of different works and I have referred to them, but favor the two mentioned."

--Terry C. Hall, Ed.D., Independent Scholar

"This volume consolidates and elaborates ideas Robert E. Stake articulated in earlier journal articles and chapters in a form that is useful and readily accessible to both practitioners and students of educational research methods. His unusually personal presentation style and innovative format for sharing practical tips through authentic examples add to the main treasure of his new book: an incomparable sophistication about research epistemology and practice. . . . His vast experience in the field and in the classroom and his intimate knowledge of the literature intersect, providing the reader with an unusually comprehensive portrayal of a specialized field. . . . The Art of Case Study Research is a significant contribution to research methodology literature and will undoubtedly assume quick popularity as a text."

--Linda Mabry, Indiana University, Bloomington

"A concise and readable primer for doing case study research, the fruit of many years of experience and wisdom. Robert E. Stake’s book is also valuable as a genuine attempt to integrate, rather than pick arguments with, the best there is of contending approaches to qualitative inquiry."

--A. Michael Huberman, Harvard University and The Network, Inc.

"The Art of Case Study Research is most useful to novices in qualitative inquiry. I could see using it in combination with other texts or readings in an introductory course to qualitative research methods or in a research methods survey course. Because of its readable style and wellspring of examples and helpful suggestions, both graduate and undergraduate students will find the book useful. Researchers seeking to more fully understand the case study approach as perceived by one of the leaders in case study work will also pick up this book. Researchers and policymakers in social service agencies may also be interested because case studies are increasingly part of evaluation strategies."

--Corrine Glesne, University of Vermont

Unique in his approach and style, Robert E. Stake draws from naturalistic, holistic, ethnographic, phenomenological, and biographic methods to present a disciplined, qualitative exploration of case study methods. In his exploration, Stake uses and annotates an actual case, at Harper School, to demonstrate to readers how to resolve some of the major issues of case study research; for example, how to select the case (or cases) that will maximize learning, how to generalize what is learned from one case to another, and how to interpret what is learned from a case. Uniquely, this book legitimizes direct interpretation as a case research method. It covers such topics as the differences between quantitative and qualitative approaches to case study; data gathering, including document review; coding, sorting, and pattern analysis; the roles of the researcher, triangulation; and reporting a case study. Also provided are end-of-chapter "workshops" that help students focus on new concepts.

Written with the inspired and thought-provoking style of a master storyteller, The Art of Case Study Research helps readers chart their way through the labyrinth of case study research.

Research book review 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I think this book is great for the qualitative researcher. Very basic and easy to follow.

Editorial Review:

This concise, applied, and very clearly written introduction to qualitative research methods can be used effectively in any semester, or year-long course. The purpose of this introductory-level text is to provide the reader with a background for understanding the uses of qualitative research in education (and other professions), to examine its theoretical and historical underpinnings, and to provide the "how-to's" of doing qualitative research. This new edition places qualitative research within current debates about research methods and alternative ways of knowing. While the authors approach the subject from a sociological perspective, they also take care to reflect the many changes in conceptualization of qualitative research brought by post-structural and feminist thought.

Excellent book - the student study pack is essential if you are purchasing this book. Really helpful for assignments, minilabs and exam prep.

i got screwed ! They did not have the item! 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I ordered the textbook on a Tuesday. Friday, I go to check my e-mail, and the seller stated that he had to refund the money because he didn't have the item in stock. So, you would think that sucks. I'll go and check to see if there are any others online. Then i go to check the item has increased from 55 to 80...I WAS PISSED! I needed the book and needed to save money. I then had to spend $100 on the book. I WOULD NOT recommend this vendor at all!

NEVER RECEIVED 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I ordered the book in plenty of time to submit my first assignment. The book never came. It's been more than 30 days. I emailed the seller at least 4 times. "Jodge" responded only once, saying the book was "mailed on the 6th". I asked for a tracking number, how it was shipped and from where and received nothing. Amazon has not given the best service with this transaction either. I have contacted them 5 or 6 times and still have not received a $62.99 credit for the book (which I paid for a month ago). I have filed a claim, but they make you wait way too long to file it, saying the book could take up to 30 days to arrive. That's ridiculous! I can't wait 30 days to turn in my assignments! I had to drop my class two weeks into it. I didn't have a book, I never even got to log on other than to introduce myself to the class and explain to the instructor why I couldn't even look at the assignments. I got way too far behind in a class that everyone encouraged me NOT to attempt online. I dropped the class, but not before I paid $175 to the college, NON-REFUNDABLE. This has also put me behind a semester towards my degree completion. Try putting a dollar value on your time!

The book arrived in a timely manner and was in like-new condition.

Great introduction to phenomenology 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

i didn't give this book 4 stars because, frankly, i haven't read enough books on phenomenological research to feel confident that this book is a 5. but, despite this being called a philosophy of education book, this is really a primer on Van Manen's brand of phenomenology--phenomenology with a more constructivist bent. the book functions as a great introduction not only to the phenomenological mindset (mainly inspired by gadamer), but also to qualitative inquiry in general.

Van Manen writes in an accessible way, making the book ideal for the uninitiated. i would recommend this book to anyone hoping to learn more about phenomenology as an approach to qualitative research.

Good resource, but presents inaccurate stats information 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is a terrific introductory resource for any student of education. It explains in clear and easy-to-understand terms the mechanics and process of educational research. Difficult concepts are within the reach of any college student thanks to Gall, Gall, and Borg's writing.

However, there are a few problems with their text. Some of their statistics explanations are incorrect, and they even go so far as to explicitly recommend using ANCOVA in inappropriate situations. They also do not explain reliability and validity with enough detail to avoid common misconceptions in the field.

As a student, I'm glad that this text is so accessible, but I'm even more thankful that I have the statistics background to notice the errors in the text. Most of my classmates, though, aren't so lucky. They will be seriously misled by this otherwise great textbook.

Editorial Review:

Educational Research: An Introduction, Eighth Edition,is the most comprehensive and widely respected text for scholars and graduate-level students who need to understand educational research in depth and conduct original research for a dissertation or thesis. A complete introduction to the major research methods and types of data analysis used today, this text provides detailed coverage of all facets of research, from the epistemology of quantitative and qualitative scientific inquiry to the design, data collection, analysis, and reporting of a completed study.
