I have 2 books: one at home and one at work. I've been using them a lot especially when I needed to write letters to different companies or people. My letters always worked. It's a great book!

Editorial Review:

Don’t sue. Write. In a world where it’s every consumer for himself, this guide to successful self-advocacy shows how to make a letter your own court of law. And how to avoid the time, expense, and hassle of litigation.

• It is all about the money. Drawing on over thirty years of success representing clients who share the same problems and frustrations as the rest of us, James Kramon knows exactly how to push the right buttons. He shows readers:
1) How to determine exactly what you want. 2) How to determine what your opponent might want. And 3) How to present your case in the best possible light. He explains which technical terms to use, when to bring in an expert—even when to send the letter via regular mail or certified.
• Over 80 sample letters to follow, each proven to be effective. Change the pertinent details and use the letters as are, or follow them as loose templates.

Definitive Introduction to the World of Non-Fiction Films 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I know that when you see a book receive the five star rating you think that the person reviewing is either tender-hearted or an ignoramus as it is inconceivable to think of a perfect book. However, since I am neither tender-hearted nor an ignoramus I give you my word that Barnouw's book is an amazing reference guide to the world of non-fiction films. Its an incredibly quick read, it took me a matter of days despite a hectic schedule, and though a lot of names and movies come flying at you they are easy to access and remember. So if you know nothing about documentaries you can quickly become knowledgeable by reading this book and then know what films you should seek after. The book traces non-fiction films all the way from the early experiments of Muybridge and the actualities of Lumiere all the way up to the 1990s. It divides the films not by region but by their respective genre and in the order they emerged. Then in the final chapter, "Movement," it carries documentaries up into our days and explains what's going on and where it's headed. Again, though you wished Barnouw could have delved even deeper into certain aspects, or become more localized as this is mostly a globalized look, you realize that this book is only the stepping stone into a whole new world. Barnouw is merely opening the door and inviting us to enter.

Editorial Review:

Now brought completely up to date, the new edition of this classic work on documentary films and filmmaking surveys the history of the genre from 1895 to the present day. With the myriad social upheavals over the past decade, documentaries have enjoyed an international renaissance; here Barnouw considers the medium in the light of an entirely new political and social climate. He examines as well the latest filmmaking technology, and the effects that video cassettes and cable television are having on the production of documentaries. And like the previous editions, Documentary is filled with photographs, many of them rare, collected during the author's travels around the world. Covering the full course of the documentary from Louis Lumiere's first effort to recent landmark productions such as Shoah, this book makes the growing importance of a unique blend of art and reality accessible and understandable to all film lovers.

Great Tool for Elementary Librarians 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I've been updating our MARC records with subject headings that our K-2 school children can use. The previous edition in the library was so old that the subject terminology was very out-dated. Once I got this book, I was relieved to see how up-to-date the terms were and how the majority were going to be easy for the youngest of library users to figure out. The material provided before the subject list even starts is very useful as well. Dewey numbers are provided from the DDC 14th Abridged edition -- the most up-to-date edition of that book. Highly recommend purchasing this updated version.

A cataloging must! 4 out of 5 stars.

With expanded and updated entries, anyone who processes and catalogs library materials needs this valuable tool. Finding MARC record subject entries is tremendously simplified and understandable.

A dynamic step-by-step guide to creating everything from tourism books and niche market magazines to specialty tabloids, using a home computer. Having built his own publishing business from scratch, Williams is uniquely qualified to shorten the learning curve by sharing the soup to nuts of what he has learned.

He begins with a basic premise: Start a publication on something known, or about a specific area. The publications that have made him successful are local papers, speciality magazines, and guides. Once subject and venue are determined, it's time to consider software tools, arranging an office for productivity, how to get advertisers, how to market your product, whom to hire (and how much to pay them), and all the other aspects of profitability.

In the sea of publishing books on the market, here's one that tells everything publishers need to know in one place. This revised version includes updated technological information on software products and addresses current fluctuations in the market and the changing business environment.

This is the bible for photojouranlism students 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

There are many must-read about photojouanlism. Among these, this should be the first you buy. It leads you to the professional field. It tells you how you can get into the business and what you should know. I cannot find something compete.

More than "F8 and be there." 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have honestly say that I expected more from Mr. Chapnick. While some chapters ARE informative, others - like how to present yourself at an interview - are routine and almost obvious. Any so-called professional should NEVER show up looking like a bum. Or, (if I recall correctly) to use Mr. Chapnick's example, 'Animal' from the old Lou Grant program. You better have the rep of an Avedon or an Adams, and even THEN, you might not get the job. While I did see some pages on amazon, to judge from the title, I feel the title is a bit misleading. While Mr. Chapnick DOES cover some points of 1st Amendment, ethical and legal issues, I was expecting the bulk of the book to deal with these issues from a journalistic/freedom of the press point of view - both in America AND abroad. While he DOES touch on this when discussing shooters killed in the line of duty, I was expeceting more. For example: How did BLACK STAR photographers (or any other photog he knew about) deal with the Chinese Army and censorship during Tiannamen Square? What about shooters in previous years working in Central and South America (ie: Susan Meiselas)? As a counterpoint, the story about Don McCullin is interesting. At what point do you HAVE to stop looking at man's inhumanity to man and almost force yourself to walk away from being a war photographer? Mr. Chapnick discusses this. All this said, Mr. Chapnick never, EVER denigrates a shooter! From Adams to Nachtwey and every one known and unknown in between, Mr. Chapnick writes about every one with respect and the kind of thoughtful patience he showed me when I was in his office one day more than 20 years ago surrounded by photographs by James Nachtwey. For me, I learned about photojournalism by going out and doing it. Books are nice, but experience is your best teacher.

Editorial Review:

Nothing has more power to communicate destruction and despair of our time than the documentary photograph. The Tiananmen Square massacre, the Kent State shootings, the Kennedy assassination, the civil rights movement-these events have been indelibly etched in the minds of Americans through the work of photojournalists. In Truth Needs No Ally, Howard Chapnick, one of the giants of contemporary photojournalism, offers a historical, philosophical, pragmatic, and inspiring look at the profession.

An Excellent Teaching Resource 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

We know the most effective way to teach literary skills is through quality, authentic literature. This book provides information about specific examples of children's books and the literary devices within. The appendices arrange the featured books several different ways (by author, title, devices, art style, curriculum tie-ins, and appropriateness for all ages), making this an especially user-friendly resource. Teachers who strive to make learning relevant and who wish to expand their classroom libraries with worthwhile material will find this book valuable.

Editorial Review:

This fourth volume of Using Picture Story Books to Teach Literary Devices, gives teachers and librarians the perfect tool for use in grades K-12. Including titles mostly published after 2002, this volume features well reviewed picture books, listed under over 40 literary devices taught in literature curriculums. Among the literary devices included are alliteration, analogy, flashback, irony, metaphor, paradox, and more. For each device a definition is given, with a listing and description of appropriate storybooks to teach that device. Each entry includes a summary of the book, cross references to other literary devices that might be also taught using the book, a description of the art style, and a curriculum tie in. Appendices listing the storybooks by author, title, art style, and curriculum tie-in add to the book's usefulness. Grades K-12.

Discusses the Major Issues Facing Libraries 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Academic libraries are in a state of change. New technologies such as the Internet are creating both opportunities and confusion. Combine this with broader context of educational needs, the explosion in very expensive scholarly periodicals, the ever present budgetary problems, and the profusion of remote campuses. All of these are combining to force change upon the library system.

This book provides both an analysis of the changes that are occurring, but also the ways libraries are facing these changes. The book is suitable for use as a text in library and information science courses as well as an introduction for new professionals and academic administrators.

A readable textbook 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Academic libraries are in a state of flux, as they try to maintain their relevance in an increasingly electronic world. In many ways, library culture has been a thing apart within the university or college setting, but as access to scholarly works, research requests, and professors themselves becomes more and more possible over the Internet, printed works and face-to-face meetings are rarer.

Librarians, too, are trying to find their place in this new academic world. A good number are working as tenured faculty, instead of as staff as in the recent past, with the need to do their own research. In a world where all information appears to be right at hand, new librarians must learn how to show researchers -- students, professors, and others -- the best ways in which to find information that is pertinent, but also how to avoid data that is downright wrong. They must learn about the research tools and the media in which they are presented so that they can understand the differences, advantages, and disadvantages, while not letting the library itself become anachronistic. They must also learn how to let their users know how important it is to take advantage of their knowledge and skills

Students of library and information studies who choose academic librarianship as their career path will be considering the advantages and disadvantages of tenure and how best to fit into the changing dynamics within academia, along the way to making data and available to potential users. Budd's book is a very good starting point. He discusses the old and the new we have now, and the possible changes in the future. His view is positive, of course, but not naive. In order to remain relevant, both libraries and librarians must appeal to their users or eventually they will no longer be a necessary part of education. This would be a tragedy, for as all students learn, not everything is on the Internet, and not all of what is there is good information.
