Editorial Review:

CARTOGRAPHIA offers a stunning array of 200 of the most beautiful, important, and fascinating maps in existence, from the world's largest cartographic collection, at the Library of Congress. These maps show how our idea of the world has shifted and grown over time, and each map tells its own unique story about nations, politics, and ambitions. The chosen images, with their accompanying stories, introduce the reader to an exciting new way of "reading" maps as travelogues---living history from the earliest of man's imaginings about planet earth to our current attempts at charting cyberspace.

Among the rare gems included in the book are the Waldseemuller Map of the World from 1507, the first to include the designation "America"; pages from the Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of 1570, considered the first modern atlas; rare maps from Africa, Asia, and Oceania that challenge traditional Western perspectives; William Faulkner's hand-drawn 1936 map of the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi; and even a map of the Human Genome. In an oversized format, with gorgeous four-color reproductions throughout, Catrographia will appeal to collectors, historians, and anyone looking for a perfect gift.

Still rolling along 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 17 people found this review helpful.

If you have the original large 1998 edition this latest book is just a continuation, though smaller in size, up to the thousandth edition in May/June 2006. I was rather impressed with the earlier book except for the silly tiny type dates and photo credits for each cover, amazingly set in four point. Fortunately someone has realised that tiny type is not really readable in a domestic lighting environment so the cover dates and photo credits have been upped to just over five point, still rather small though. Apart from this all the other text is readable and combined with the excellent design and printing makes this a wonderful book to look at.

Like the first book it is not just a memory jogger of covers, there are plenty of sidebar excerpts from the magazine. It is the covers though that are the five stars plus. Not many consumer publications manage to consistently retain a quality cover look over so many years and in the Stone's case with the same logo since January 1981. Look through the index of photographers and illustrators and you'll see why the covers look so cool: Annie Leibovitz shot 142 of them, Herb Ritts has forty-six, Richard Avedon eighteen. With this sort of quality no wonder it always looked good. Even the early issues in the rather inflexible newspaper format had a distinctive cover style.

I think this beautiful looking updated book will be a strong seller (not least because of Amazon's bargain price) for those who lived with rock for the last thirty-nine years.

Quirky observation: the book's title is on a wrap-around strip of paper (rather bizarrely called a belly band in the trade) and I can't see it staying in one piece for long as this is just the kind of book that will enjoy a lot of handling.

Editorial Review:

For the past 39 years, the covers of Rolling Stone have depicted the great icons of popular culture, from John Lennon, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, and Madonna to Steve Martin, Uma Thurman, and Richard Nixon. Often it was an appearance on the cover that launched a performer’s legendary status in the first place. An enormous hit when it appeared in 1997 as Rolling Stone: The Complete Covers, 1967-1997 (nearly 100,000 copies sold in all editions), this fantastic collection has been revised and updated to include the covers since 1997 up to the much-publicized 1,000th cover, slated to hit newsstands in May 2006.

With an updated introduction by Jann S. Wenner as well as new excerpts from the magazine and quotes from photographers and their celebrity subjects, this nostalgic journey down the memory lane of pop music, entertainment, and politics is irresistible.

The Sweetest Plum 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I love BOOK LUST and MORE BOOK LUST. Let's just get that out of the way.

Pearl gathered together a fantastic reference book filled with over 1000 titles by specific categories for every mood: Arctic adventure, Armchair Travel, Fantasy by the truckload, Gay/Lesbian Literature, For the Cat Lover and so on.

Books on almost every country (and every state in her follow up "More Book Lust"). Fiction and nonfiction abound. My bounty grew and Pearl lead me to some great treasures, including a list of other bibliographies, which fed my lust for even more books.

She includes a brief description of most books and throws a few other titles in each category that are simply "too good to miss". Both of her books include featured authors.

Naturally, these are her personal picks, but I liked the idea of setting books to moods rather than publishing dates or random genres. Now, I have a reference if I'm in the mood for a Japanese Murder Mystery or if I crave a little Academic Humor. Heed this advise: plunder her pages. You won't regret it!

Editorial Review:

What to read next is every book lover's greatest dilemma. Nancy Pearl comes to the rescue with this wide-ranging and fun guide to the best reading new and old. Pearl, who inspired legions of litterateurs with "What If All (name the city) Read the Same Book," has devised 170 thematic reading lists that cater to every mood, occasion, and personality. These annotated lists cover such topics as mother-daughter relationships, science for nonscientists, mysteries of all stripes, African-American fiction from a female point of view, must-reads for kids, books on bicycling, "chick-lit," and many more. Pearl's enthusiasm and taste shine throughout in this lively and informative illustrated guide.

"See What I See"

The best book marketing book--EVER!! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Where to begin...

Oh, there's a good place. That is what you will ask yourself after you read this masterpiece. With all of this information "WHERE DO I BEGIN?"

This book is a monster. It is jam-packed with more (high-quality) information than any other book on the subject. There is absolutely no fluff in this book, which is a drag when you consider how much of it there is to read. Every aspect of book marketing is covered, and I like the fact that JK keep updating it, as the world of book marketing is changing every year. Just on the internet alone: first there were web pages, then myspace, friendster, facebook, blogs, plogs, vlogs, book teaser trailers, reviews, previews, ebooks, audiobooks, iTunes, ebay, and podcastalley! (I sound like Hedy Lamar!)

I have read a LOT of books on book marketing, book promotion, publishing, and self-publishing. This is at the top of my list, along with Jump Start Your Book Sales. There are other VERY good books (I will have to remember to make a listmania of them), but this is the one--the Bible if you will--the one above all others that you must read and own and reread. in fact, this book is the think and Grow Rich of book marketing.

I will leave the detailed analysis for other authors. The purpose of this review is to get you to "buy this book NOW!" because at $18.45 (current sale price on Amazon) this is one of the most important investments you will ever make on your career as an author (or a publicist). You can keep reading reviews, or you can buy this book (or even get a copy at the library--but you WILL end up wanting your own copy) and start making serious money.

This book will NOT give you a plan. it will not show you step-by-step how to do all of the things it recommends. That is why other books exist. Here's:

"How to use this book"

Read it. Mark the ideas that really inspire you. Then go through it a second (or third) time and on a SEPARATE piece of paper write down the page number of the idea you like, write a short headline (3-7 words) followed by a 3-5 sentence description of what the idea is--not why you like it. Do this for all of the ideas you like. the purpose of doing this is to f-o-c-u-s you on what you CAN and WILL do, so that you don't get OVERWHELMED. This book will overwhelm you, unless you are a zombie, which is just cool in its own right.

NEXT: Look ate all of the ideas you have headlined and described on paper. you should have a few pages of scribbles, maybe even up to a dozen or so. Now, with the book put aside, type THOSE ideas into your computer. I recommend any word processing software (like MS Word, WordPerfect, Open Office...) rather than a spreadsheet program. The point of this part of the exercise is to see which listings you will pause over an which ones you will delete. Also you should find yourself re-prioritizing ideas, even if you had set out to type everything in exact order. Do not have someone else do this for you or you will defeat the purpose of weeding out the "maybes" from the "must do"'s. This is your future (and fame, and money) we are talking about here. Don't cheat yourself.

Once you have that list entered and you are happy with it, save it and print out a copy. Look at it a few times over the next week. Some ideas will start to grow on you while others ill sound less fun. DO THE FUN ONES FIRST! do what you can afford to do now first! Don't eat your vegetables first, eat the candy! The point is to get started and make headway, not punish yourself by dutifully finishing boring tasks. Once you get some momentum built up and you can see progress you can measure--then start in on the more intensive stuff.

Thanks for reading

Very large! 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

WHile I was aware that this book was illustrated, I was not aware of the fact that it is huge! I thought it would be an illustrated, regular novel-size book. Instead it's about A3 size, and very heavy.. The pictures are great and all but if I had been aware of the size of this book I probably wouldn't have purchased it.

the coattails of one Hunter S. Thompson 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

excellent book. i was completely new to his writing beefore reading this gem. crazy bleep* guy! his work seems to be more of a writers' journaling than serious novel-stuff. a travel-blog; if you will.. i haven't gotten into many of his other works yet plan to, eventually. even a holy-roller could come out freshpresssed and standing tall after one of his tales. good stuff, though. very good stuff. if you were one of those, 'say no to drugs' individuals then a lot of this might come off as tumultuous and confusing and weird and odd and, basically, not ur cup of tea.. take care and rest that crazy mans' soul. cheers.

Editorial Review:

Hunter S. Thompson’s most eccentric book in a new, limited edition...

The Curse of Lono is to Hawaii what Fear and Loathing was to Las Vegas: the crazy tales of a journalist’s "coverage" of a news event that ends up being a wild ride to the dark side of Americana. Originally published in 1983, Curse features all of the zany, hallucinogenic wordplay and feral artwork for which the Hunter S. Thompson/Ralph Steadman duo have become known and loved. This curious book, considered an oddity among Hunter’s oeuvre, has been long out of print, prompting collectors to search high and low for an original copy.

Darkness into Light 5 out of 5 stars.
40 of 40 people found this review helpful.

I was glad I had this book along with me when I went to see the real Book of Kells at the Trinity College Library in Dublin. The lines of tourists waiting to view this famous eighth century manuscript were about a quarter of a mile long, and the museum proctors were really hustling us through the area where a small sampling of pages were actually on view.

(If you take the tour, be sure to check out the main chamber of the Old Library with its first editions of Newton and Darwin, plus the harp that is (alas, falsely) attributed to Brian Boru, high king of Ireland).

The first facsimile of the Book of Kells was published in 1974, and although this book only advertises itself as 'an illustrated introduction to the manuscript...' it contains good color plates of many of the most famous pages, e.g. the symbols of the four evangelists and the beginning of the 'Breves causae' of Matthew, among others.

Author, Bernard Meehan, the current Keeper of Manuscripts at Trinity College states that "the sacred text itself was copied in the Book of Kells with a remarkable degree of inaccuracy." It consists of the Latin text of the Gospels, illuminated in the very ornate Hiberno-Saxon style ('Hiberno' refers to the Irish, or Hibernians).

Legend has it that the Book of Kells was produced by St. Colum Cille on the island of Iona off western Scotland. Although it was probably begun in the Irish monastery on Iona, it was taken to the monastery of Kells in County Meath, after a series of Viking raids. The monastery on Iona was pillaged in 795, and again in 802. According to the author, "In 806, sixty-eight of the community were killed in another raid. The following year, the survivors migrated to Ireland and began to erect conventual buildings at Kells..." where the illumination of the manuscript was probably completed.

If you are interested in the historical background of the Book of Kells, the author devotes a whole Appendix to it.

Alas, according to this book's second Appendix, "Losses, Additions and Marginalia," the Book of Kells has not remained intact down through the centuries. "At present there are 340 folios, but around thirty folios, including some major decorated pages have been lost." The monks also used blank spaces in the manuscript to record details of property transactions in the late eleventh and twelfth centuries.

Meehan's book is definitely worth viewing and reading. It also contains a wealth of the smaller decorative illustrations that do not always relate to the sacred text, e.g. hares, dogs, horses, and at least one moth. The color and minute details of these decorations are a source of endless fascination, and the scholarly text, although a trifle dry, is also very interesting.

Don't Let the Title Fool You 5 out of 5 stars.

This can almost be considered an inexpensive textbook. It not only defines, but explains the terms in a simple, easy to understand format. Although in dictionary form, it consistently relates the terms to one another so the reader will understand how the concepts interwind. Includes financial and banking terms.

Comprehensive 5 out of 5 stars.

Working in an IT company catering to bankers I bought this book to help understand their lingo. I have to say it hasn't disappointed yet. It is also very up to date the latest IT/banking terms. If you were to read all the definitions in this book you would probably know more than you banker. A great reference. Buy it!

Exellent resource 5 out of 5 stars.

I use this in a training class about bank documentation. It is very helpful and comprehensive. It defines terms in concise and easy to understand words. Even a seasoned banker can learn something from this dictionary.

Editorial Review:

More than 3,000 terms are defined in this newly updated edition as they relate to banking, banking practices, laws, and regulations. Barron's Business Dictionaries are useful reference sources for business students as well as the general reader who is seeking advice and information on business matters.
