Great resource 5 out of 5 stars.

This book came in handy as a student teacher and when applying for teaching jobs. I appreciated the strategies on how to jump-start my student teaching on a positive note by creating relationships with my students and CT. Even though I have now completed my student teaching, I will continue to use many of the book's classroom management and discipline tips in my own classroom, such as the question & answer box and bellnote activity. I recommend this to any student teacher."

So Simple Sooo Helpful WOW 5 out of 5 stars.

Great text for the beginning linguist 4 out of 5 stars.
23 of 23 people found this review helpful.

Carnie's "Syntax" is a good text for the graduate student, although it falls for many of the same pitfalls any beginning syntax book faces. The layout in this book is wonderful. The writing is mostly clear and even has a dry sense of humor at points. Indices are great and it is easy to go back and find what you need. Each chapter - indeed each subsection - has a summary of the ideas learned. For ideas like raising and control this is an invaluable way to quickly compare the differences between the concepts. There are also definitions for the theories and concepts discussed. Great job on this.

Exercises are great. Some of them can really push a student. But they are designed in such a way that to solve them, students will usually have to link ideas from other chapters and draw logical conclusions. This really helps students start to build up a linguistic framework, as opposed to just scattered, disparate pieces of information. He relies heavily on Irish. But, in all fairness, the problems are relevant and serve the student well.

The only problem the "Syntax" really had is where it chose to simplify the model. Any introduction to syntax has to simplify its model for students to understand. The problem is where to simplify. By and large, Carnie succeeds in making complex material understandable. But in a few cases the simplifications can confuse the student more than the complex concept would have. This is nothing that a good professor can't overcome, though. There are also a few big ideas handled in a cursor way or not at all. DP-hypothesis is mentioned in such a way that the reader wonders why he even brought it up (to be perfectly honest, nothing in his models even require it). VP shells aren't even mentioned.

Carnie does a better job than most in incorporating and addressing competing theories. He still has a minimalist perspective - which I don't have a problem with - but is less dogmatic than most. The end of the book even has chapters on Lexical-functional grammar and HPSG. Hey, students are intelligent. Give them the skills and they can make intelligent choices on their own.

All-in-all this is a good book for an introductory syntax course at the graduate level. It can be used for a person studying syntax independently, but don't hesitate to check out papers or other texts when you feel confused. There were some concessions made for simplification and often that extra bit of information can make it click.

Editorial Review:

Building on the success of the bestselling first edition, the second edition of this textbook provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the major issues in Principles and Parameters syntactic theory, including phrase structure, the lexicon, case theory, movement, and locality conditions.

  • Includes new and extended problem sets in every chapter, all of which have been annotated for level and skill type.
  • Features three new chapters on advanced topics including vP shells, object shells, control, gapping and ellipsis and an additional chapter on advanced topics in binding.
  • Offers a brief survey of both Lexical-Functional Grammar and Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar.
  • Succeeds in strengthening the reader's foundational knowledge, and prepares them for more advanced study.
  • Supported by an instructor's manual and online resources for students and instructors, available at www.blackwellpublishing.com/carnie.

Awesome read about the journey of ivy league applications 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Fantastic book! This book is so well written and engaging. I felt like I really felt like I knew the students whose college application journeys were portrayed. I even cried when one of them had (his or her - don't want to give it away) dream come true. It was also beautiful to read how their views of what will make them happy in the end changed over their senior year. I hope to share this book with other parents whose children are applying to colleges. Although my own children are presently at (and also looking at)state colleges, it's such an honest and personal portayal of the pressures of senior year. I hope the author will write a follow-up to describe the pleasures and challenges of college.

Editorial Review:

A former Ivy League admissions officer, Joie Jager-Hyman follows five bright and eager high schoolers—students from diverse ethnic, social, and financial backgrounds—as they each put their best foot forward on the road they hope will lead them to the hallowed halls of Harvard University.

At once a remarkable true story of dedication, achievement, and heartbreak and a guide for success in an ultra-competitive environment, this important work deserves a place in the home of every family that has ever dreamed of receiving that coveted “fat envelope” in the mail. Jager-Hyman also offers a startlingly frank appraisal of the college admission process and the important roles race and class continue to play in a student's efforts to attend the best school possible.

Editorial Review:

The Handbook of Research on Teacher Education was initiated to ferment change in education based on solid evidence. The publication of the First Edition was a signal event in 1990. While the preparation of educators was then - and continues to be - the topic of substantial discussion, there did not exist a codification of the best that was known at the time about teacher education. Reflecting the needs of educators today, the Third Edition takes a new approach to achieving the same purpose. Beyond simply conceptualizing the broad landscape of teacher education and providing comprehensive reviews of the latest research for major domains of practice, this edition: stimulates a broad conversation about foundational issues; brings multiple perspectives to bear; provides new specificity to topics that have been undifferentiated in the past; and includes diverse voices in the conversation. The Editors, with an Advisory Board, identified nine foundational issues and translated them into a set of focal questions: What's the Point?: The Purposes of Teacher Education What Should Teachers Know? Teacher Capacities: Knowledge, Beliefs, Skills, and Commitments Where Should Teachers Be Taught? Settings and Roles in Teacher Education Who Teaches? Who Should Teach? Teacher Recruitment, Selection, and Retention Does Difference Make a Difference? Diversity and Teacher Education How Do People Learn to Teach? Who's in Charge? Authority in Teacher Education How Do We Know What We Know? Research and Teacher Education What Good is Teacher Education? The Place of Teacher Education in Teachers' Education Co-Published by Routledge/Taylor & Francis Group and the Association of Teacher Educators. The Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) is an individual membership organization devoted solely to the improvement of teacher education both for school-based and post secondary teacher educators. Editorial Review:

This book describes response to intervention (RTI), and specifically the three-tiered model of reading intervention. RTI, which is a method of identifying and providing services to students with reading disabilities who are learning to read. It is known to be the best alternative to the discrepancy or wait to fail model of identifying children with learning disabilities, in which children are not identified as having learning disabilities until their academic progress is shown to be at odds with the IQ.

Lots Of Paradigm-Shifting Information 5 out of 5 stars.
57 of 59 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Len Horowitz's books have tackled some complex, controversial subjects, including shadow elite conspiratorial agendas, natural health, hidden information in Biblical texts, and vibrational medicine. His present book delves into all these matters. The information on physics, consciousness, quantum-holographic reality, vibrational sound, sacred geometry, water crystals, DNA, and holistic medicine in this book is fantastic and very current. Horowitz's religious ideas seem a bit confused to me as he has put himself on a messianic mission to promote global health and overcome the global elite dark agendas that he has been uncovering. He has seemingly become aligned with light polarity mystery school traditions connected to the Essene sects of the Biblical times. There is much scientific and healing wisdom encoded in those traditions, although the beliefs about light defeating dark in an apocalyptic scenario are not suited to a book that is otherwise focused on sciences and healing research. When I saw Dr. Horowitz speak in Miami very recently he referred to the conspiratorial activities he has been uncovering as "alien" to basic human values and compassion. However, this author appears reluctant to touch upon the truly "ET" influences connected to the global elite and agendas at work to control humanity under totalitarian structures. Dr. Horowitz is a fantastic researcher and provides a lot of valuable information - the spiritual or religious context in which these matters are considered is an issue that the author has felt compelled to interweave in his books. I personally find the author's religious conclusions to be a bit of a drawback, but I can see how he perceives his mission as someone on a hero's journey to help light overcome darkness. The science and health information in this book are more advanced than his previous works, and support a lot of the concepts I use in my own holistic healing work. This is a book I commend highly even with the parts of it that I found to be focused on religious interpretations.
