Getting Your Child Into a Top School 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 11 people found this review helpful.

The presentation emphasizes the importance of monitoring grades from the
9th grade onward because this provides a good predictor of future performance. In addition, parents should track grading rubrics. Student
practice is important to solidify knowledge of the technical subject areas. i.e. math, science and foreign language

Sometimes, group study can make tedious work more palatable and manageable. The author provides a list of excellent colleges that do not require an SAT score. i.e. Bates, Bowdoin, and Harvey Mudd engineering school. Olin College provides a free engineering school. The author recommends that students provide a resume, chart and no picture.

Essays should provide a sincere recitation of your accomplishments and what you plan to contribute to the college. Applicants should demonstrate a passion for the area of study in the application. In addition, areas of strength should be emphasized.

The authors really do not explain the pitfalls of selecting a top school.
First of all, what is a top school? Is it a place with a 100% job
placement rate or a place where only PhDs are hired or a place where
top SAT scorers are highly sought out? In my own experience, it is
important to visit the institution of choice and talk to current and
former students. Do students seem to be happy? Are they overworked?
Do teachers teach or do student teachers take up most of the teaching
load because professors are too busy publishing and doing research?
These are all areas to be investigated because college is a multi-year
commitment in time and money.

The author doesn't say so; however, a top school consists of the following:
o excellent job placement/prospects in your major area of study
o good preparation for graduate school work, if ever contemplated
o comprehensive teaching by academic types or working professionals
o a current curriculum (although professional licensure courses of study
are mandated by state or federal law)
o a reasonable cost for the value of the education provided
o a roster of accomplishment by the alumni
i.e. Professional licensure, PhD or graduate education, publishing,
inventorship, identification by the print media

There are things you do not want in a top school. i.e.

o professors or teachers who delegate too much teaching to assistants
o instruction that is too esoteric or theoretical
o an institution that doesn't link the education to professional placement
o too much adherence to bell curves and rigid grading rubrics
o teaching that assumes too much prior background in the subject matter
o an environment which is not conducive to learning
o an unaffordable cost for the education

Gets to the Point 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is an appropriately short book as the author espouses choosing words carefully and keeping your message brief. 30 seconds is all you need. In fact, he makes the point that it's typically all the listener can handle.

Frank breaks down the keys to creating an effective 30 second message as follows: Have a clear objective. Identify the individuals that can give you what you want. Decide on your approach.

Then he steps through the structure and components of the message: the hook, body, and close.

Finally, he leaves the reader with some tips: Use Imagery. Talk plainly (no business-ease). Personalize the message. Evoke emotion.

Of course, like anything else worth doing, it requires practice.

-- Nick McCormick, Author, Lead Well and Prosper: 15 Successful Strategies for Becoming a Good Manager

Good ramp up, but... 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Three stars just for the "crazy uncle in the attic" metaphor. I intend to borrow that one someday- it captures what I've been trying for years to articulate.

The first two thirds of the book were interesting, though nothing you haven't heard elsewhere. Well, maybe not everyone was blessed with parents as enlightened as mine. That's the only explanation I can come up with.

The last third of the book, which SHOULD have been practical How-Tos instead turned into diffuseness and academic word play. It was very disappointing after how direct the first part was.

All authors claiming to teach me how to do something should first write a draft that lays out their proposals in point form. If you can't put it in point form, it's too academic. I want things I can take to a classroom.

Editorial Review:

Inspired by Howard's extensive travel and collaboration with students and colleagues from many different cultures, this book offers a healing vision for the future of education in pluralistic nations. From his 25 years of experience as a multicultural educator, he looks deeply into the mirror of his own racial identity to discover what it means to be a culturally competent white teacher in racially diverse schools.

Excellent Tool 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My friend bought this dictionary, and I quickly followed suit. It gives concise definitions that are easy to understand, and it's the right size for my nightstand (not too big, but big enough to have a huge # of words). My friend said the CD is great, too, but I haven't used it yet.

Compass CD not friendly to use 3 out of 5 stars.

Hi :

Good CD companion, specially the "Wordfinder". A very negative point is that the wheel mouse doesn't scroll the screen down (I am using windows vista)

The word "stinging" is not present both in the printed and CD version of the dictionary.

I was using Longman LDOCE dictionary before and my motivation to buy Oxford was the "Wordfinder" CD feature, but I think the printed version of Longman is much better than the Oxford one.

Very Persuasive 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am a parent of two who are not close to school age, but I have been looking into alternative education methods for the future, such as the Montessori method. This was recommended to me by Amazon, and I decided to read it because I thought the concept was interesting, to use the world around you as an educational resource. Let me tell you, I was blown away. This book presents the concept of unschooling in a very persuasive manner. It really got me thinking. This is not an instructional guide (which would be completely against the concept of unschooling whatsoever) so if you're looking at reading this to get a better idea of how to unschool, you'll waste your time. This is more of an encouraging resource for those who are currently unschooling, going to unschool, or considering it. The book has alot of testimony from parents and their children who are unschooling, and alot of other resources if you want to know more about what works in tandem with the unschooling philosophy. This book is also like an FAQ in regards to unschoolers (or potential unschoolers) biggest fears, "How will I teach them higher level maths?" "What about socialization?" "Will my children actually WANT to learn on their own??" I like this book because it didn't slam other teaching methods or throw a bunch of biased facts in my face (I admit a few of the testimonials kinda come off "a little Holier than thou" in regards to traditional schooling though) I would say that this book is very reassuring and comforting to have if you are considering this method of teaching. It's like a personal cheerleader. I loved it. I plan on discussing this method with my husband to see what he thinks, but I'll tell you that my heart is all for this method of teaching. This book will really make you sit back and rethink about education methods.
Also, keep in mind that this book was written in like 1998, so some of the resources provided to the reader may probably be outdated, but anyone who's remotely internet savy will probably figure this out anyway and know how to get more info on unschooling on the internet.

Editorial Review:

To Unschoolers, Learning Is As Natural As Breathing
Did you know that a growing percentage of home schoolers are becoming unschoolers? The unschooling movement is founded on the principle that children learn best when they pursue their own natural curiosities and interests. Without bells, schedules, and rules about what to do and when, the knowledge they gain through mindful living and exploration is absorbed more easily and enthusiastically. Learning is a natural, inborn impulse, and the world is rich with lessons to be learned and puzzles to be solved.
Successful unschooling parents know how to stimulate and direct their children's learning impulse. Once you read this book, so will you!

Excellent Start 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I am a preschool teacher who has taught kindergarten and 4 yr olds. Having been asked to take a new job with 2 and 3 yr olds was a lot more difficult than I thought! With all the choking hazzards and lack of fine motor skills, it's hard to plan lessons. This book gives some excellent activity ideas. I loved it. My only negative thought is that the book doesn't really follow "themes", which almost all schools use these days. Still it's a great buy!

Editorial Review:

With over three hundred activities written specifically for infants and toddlers, this book will captivate children's imaginations and create wonderful opportunities for learning. The result of a nationwide contest, these activities were selected as the best of the best and are written by teachers, directors, and caregivers. Organized by time of day, teachers will love the easy-to-use format. Covering areas such as arrival and departure time, clean up, and transitions, the activities span a variety of developmental areas, including language, sensory, cognitive, social-emotional, and motor skills. Approved by teachers and loved by children, this resource is sure to be a classroom favorite.
