Aristotle-Everybody's philosopher 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Mortimer Adler is one of my favorite philosophers because; he can take complex philosophical ideas and make them understandable for the non-philosopher. This is a great skill that few philosophers posses and one of the reasons why ordinary people do not read philosophy. In this book, Adler distills Aristotle's thoughts on metaphysics, ethics, and political philosophy. My major interest is in political philosophy, how do humans create a better society to live in? Aristotle builds a case for the need all of us to strive to live the "good life." A few of Aristotle's quotes are in order to delineate his thinking. "That which is really `good' for us is something we always ought to desire because we need it." "A good life is one that has been lived by making morally virtuous choices or decisions." Aristotle was the first philosopher to label man as "a social animal." "Human beings can not live well or achieve the best lives for themselves, by living well or achieve the best lives for themselves, by living together in families and tribes." To achieve this "good life" we must live in states. So, what is the best state? The best state provides a guarantee of freedoms, less economic regulation, provide a safety net for people with bad luck, provide a good education so that we can be trained to make us morally virtuous citizens.

I cannot sing Adler's praises enough; he does a great job of simplifying Aristotle's concepts. A great beginning book on philosophy, which delves into the teachings of the most brilliant person in history.

As a retired Army officer and student of political philosophy, I found this to be a great book to continue one's journey into political philosophy.

Editorial Review:

Aristotle taught logic to Alexander the Great and, through his enduring philosophical works, to Mortimer Adler as well. The one went on to conquer the world; the other to dominate the field of adult education in the United States. Now Adler instructs the world in the "uncommon common sense" of Aristotelian logic.

Thick Junk 2 out of 5 stars.

I have been in the insurance industry 15 years and just decided to buy this as an addition for my work desk. I rarely open the book, however, anytime I go to look up a coverage definition it is not listed. This book is of NO use to me. Not really sure who would use this.............a person who hands out maps at the Auto Club who may need to look up a word or two?

Every College Student Should Read This Book 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

As an adult college student, I was looking for a book that would outline what writing requirements are needed for various courses and this book fit the bill. Justin Cohen and Marti Page provided detailed and useful information for different college writing assignments. In addition, they provided all the fundamentals a college student should need to write effectively for any college course. The chapters covered key information with ample examples. It was also helpful to see professors' viewpoints on what students have presented to them and what they really want students to provide in essay and research paper submissions. Moreover, it was helpful to read what students had to say about the processes that they used to provide the correct amount of information for their writing assignments.

If you are a college student who wants to improve your writing skills, BUY THIS BOOK!

Practical Magic! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book is the best resource out there, and is currently being used at the local university. I am an education major and my campus uses this edition as well. There are many helpful bulleted lists for quick reference while in the classroom. Several supply freebies are printed up just waiting to Xeroxed st your convenience. Still, the best features are it's ease of reading and application of little details that make all the difference. This is the kind of "practical magic" you don't receive from a formal education that makes all the difference come game time.

GREAT handbook for starting out as a SUB 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I am just starting out as a sub for grade school and wanted to be well prepared. I saw great reviews on this particular book and decided to go for it. I was not dissapointed. It has a lot of good tips and includes some handy filler/emergency tactics such as games and pages to copy to keep the day running smoothly. It also has lots of handy information that is grade specific so no matter where you go, you will have a reference and appropriate backup to refer to. I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

The most widely-used substitute teacher handbook, now in its sixth edition features effective classroom management skills, teaching strategies, fill-in activities, and now subbing in special education settings. These research-based skills are tried and tested skills to ensure an enjoyable and productive day.

Excellent Resource for the LD 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I am a preservice teacher and am studying special education. I saw this book on Amazon and was intrigued by the low price. I was so surprised when I received it. It is a wonderful resource for anyone who works with students with LD. It covers the whole gambit from identification, to characteristics, to strategies. It really is a complete handbook and for the price you can't find a better deal. I have found this resource much more useful than my textbooks on LD that cost me upwards 70-80 dollars. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book!

Great resource! 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

As a new resource teacher for my school this was one of the better books I found to help me with real life solutions to teaching learning disabled children. This was a great book for explanations of various learning disabilities and set exercises to use in class for all age groups. I work mostly one on one, but found the activities and strategies easily adaptable for individual use.

Editorial Review:

This important resource offers diagnostic tools, remedial techniques, sample lessons, and worksheets to quickly identify students with learning deficits, improve their academic performance, and bolster their self-esteem. Includes assessment forms, problem-specific solutions, and intervention techniques.

LOVE these so far 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I run a daycare and bought these books to help guide our daily activities. I've only been using it for a few weeks, but love it. I also bought the Daily Curriculum book co-authored also by Pam Schiller, who helped write this one. They have a lot of similar things, but enough different that I kept them both. There is lots of ideas in the book for kids with varying interests and it's made planning educational stuff a lot easier for me.

1 Thumb up... 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book expecting oodles of great ideas...One great thing is the way that it organizes themes with each unit broken down into days and learning centers. However, the actual ideas are pretty general and although some are interesting, I have definitely found better ones- some of them don't even seem to correlate with the theme they are listed under...

I did get some good ideas, but would suggest 2 much better options for the money that provide more themed ideas with details rather than just general activities. Try: "The Complete Daily Curriculum" by: Pam Schiller and Pat Phipps AND "Creative Resources for the Early Childhood Classroom" by: Judy Herr

Editorial Review:

This resource supplies 25 two-week themes, with a total of over 2,000 activities and ideas. Paperback, 463 pages.

Major overhaul in presentation (but not substance) 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My youngest just started college a few weeks ago, so I'm officially done with the college-search process but when I saw this at my local library, I couldn't resist picking this up out of curiosity, and imagine my surprise when I flipped through this.

"Petersen's Four Year Colleges - 2009 Edition" (2,897 pages--it should be sold "by the pound"!) is essentially 2 books in 1. On the one hand there are the 'hard cold facts', presenting a summary of about 2,200 colleges around the US. On the average, all colleges get about half a page description. Very helpful is that the colleges are lumped state-by-state, because, let's face it, most college students remain in their home state. The other part of the book is a more in-depth (two pages) profile of about 1,000 colleges. It is important to understand that those in-depth profiles are NOT written up by the book's editors, but instead by the colleges themselves (and the colleges have paid for this placement). Thus, a 2 page profile on GW and American, but not on Georgetown. The HUGE difference with earlier editions is that these college-provided profiles follow immediately after the state-by-state summaries of all the colleges.

I found the book more useful that my daughter did, when we used this. For one, because the book is so huge and outright heavy, it's not user-friendly from that perspective. That said, there is no denying that there is tons of great information in this book, including at the front (in earlier editions if was at the end) of the book 200 pages of colleges by major (which is VERY helpful if you are into a specific area of interest--as an example, you can major in "Textile Science" in only 2 colleges in the country), as well as by entrance difficulty and cost ranges. Another reason I like the book is that for most colleges it does have the latest (08-09) figures for tuition, room and board, and other miscellaneous charges. Hence I read that the total cost for attending GW (where I went to grad school) is now over $50,000. PER YEAR. Unbelievable.

Ultimately, this is a book to get when your son or daughter is at the very beginning of their college search and is simply looking to get some basic information. On that level, the book performs well. But after the initial looking around, there are other resources that should be checked out, such as the Princeton Reviews 2009 edition of "The Best 368 Colleges".

Editorial Review:

This valuable resource includes information on every accredited four-year undergraduate institution in the U.S. and Canada -- more than 2,500 institutions all-together! It also includes detailed two-page descriptions written by admissions personnel for nearly 1,000 colleges. College bound students and their parents will be able to research colleges and universities in regards to setting; enrollment; entrance level; academic programs and degrees awarded; entrance requirements and application procedures; tuition, fees, and housing costs; student/faculty ratios and campus life; and contact information.

This book is wonderful for integrating math curriculum with reading fluency. Children don't even realize their learning because they are having so much fun sharing their poems with their classmates.

Poetry and math? 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is a neat way to bring poetry into the math classroom. The math teacher on my team looked at it and chose some to use with our middle school students. (Unfortunately, she felt that some of the math was not correct.) If you're looking for great use of poetic language, this really isn't the book you want. It provides the basic definitions about different mathematic ideas in the form of two voice poems.

Cross-curricular poetry! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

After completing some other Poetry in two-voice and four-voice formats, this book offers an opportunity to reach your math oriented students, and touch the cross-curricular boundary. I used this book and the poems within its pages as a surprise for my math team partner. We practiced on some days that my partner was out on taking some professional development, and performed the poems for him upon his return. This is one more way to hook students on poetry.

Editorial Review:

Presents mathematical ideas through poetic dialogues intended to be read by two people.
