Ten Things Every Child With Autism Wishes You Knew 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

As a grandparent to a child with autism, this was a book I wish EVERYONE would read. If your child is recently diagnosed with autism, you will find this book to be both informational and critical to understanding the child with autism. It is encouraging and uplifting. It offers a sense of hope and purpose to both the parent and child where there is often the feelings of confusion, misinformation and helplessness. There is an additional book by this same author about what TEACHERS ought to know about the child with autism and I plan to definitely read that one and share it as well. If you want to know more about autism, this is the book for you. It is an easy read and, as I mentioned, very informational.

Editorial Review:

Framed with both humor and compassion, the book defines the top ten characteristics that illuminate the minds and hearts of children with autism. Ellen's personal experiences as a parent, an autism columnist, and a contributor to numerous parenting magazines coalesce to create a guide for all who come in contact with a child on the autism spectrum.

Pretty Good 4 out of 5 stars.

This book was pretty helpful. It covered most topics that I was looking for.

Sentences too long and abstract 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My daughter is 5, she is not interested. She does not like "sometimes", or "some kids". She wants stories from life about kids and adults. She does not like abstract reasoning in long sentences.
But stories in a book are easy to rewrite for her. And they are good guide of what should be done. Such as "Tom saw this and did that. Teacher was happy. Bob saw that and did this. Teacher was sad."

Social Stories 5 out of 5 stars.

Very useful book to help with social stories to help students with Autism deal with different circumstances they encounter.

I was looking for more information regarding Social Stories 1 out of 5 stars.

I was looking for more information regarding how social stories help children. How to create social stories with children. I was disappointed by this book. It does not give any information on how to work with social stories to help children.

Editorial Review:

The newest offering by Carol Gray. Social Stories help the child with autism or Asperger's Syndrome to understand the social world around them. This book is an updated version of the New Social Story Book with new text and accompanying illustrations.

Editorial Review:

Activity schedules-simple, yet revolutionary teaching tools-enable children with autism to accomplish activities with greatly reduced adult supervision.

An activity schedule is a set of pictures or words that cues a child to follow a sequence of activities. When activity schedules are mastered, children are more self-directed and purposeful in their home, school, and leisure activities-doing puzzles, interacting with classmates, and preparing food with minimal assistance from adults. In Activity Schedules for Children with Autism, parents and professionals find detailed instructions and examples to help them: assess a child's readiness to use activity schedules; prepare an activity schedule; understand graduated guidance; monitor progress; expand social skills; and progress to written schedules.

Based on a decade of research conducted at the Princeton Child Development Institute, Activity Schedules for Children with Autism offers a proven teaching tool to help children with autism make effective use of unstructured time, handle changes in routine with more ease, and choose among an established set of activities independently. It can be used successfully with young children, adolescents, and adults, rewarding them with more control over their lives.

Brilliant and eye opening 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Brilliant, eloquent, and helpful, this book is not only eye opening, but gives a clear grasp and understanding to the broad spectrum Autism occupies. Dr. Kluth's book clearly explains the way parents and teachers can impact children not only at home, but in an inclusive classroom.

"You re" Going to Love this Kid" is written in a clear, no non-sense style capturing the unique challenges that can occur between school systems, teachers, parents and the special child with autism. Dr. Kluth brilliantly gives examples and steps to help overcome the obstacles so many parents face with educational professionals who may be ignorant or unaware of the promising and doable outlook of inclusive teaching.

Dr. Kluth's book is not only creative, but easy to follow and useful. It is information on routines and other helpful ideas and all done in an easy to follow creative way. This book is inspiring and touching with the many stories she includes from actual students.

I borrow Dr. Kluth's book out regularly and strongly encourage teachers, administrators and parents to attend Dr. Kluth's seminars regarding inclusive teaching and understanding autism.

Editorial Review:

It’s not unusual for people with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) to exhibit challenging behaviors including noncompliance, aggression, and repetitive actions that interfere with daily life. These behaviors, which appear meaningless, unproductive, or even dangerous, can be changed or stopped.

This guide describes functional behavior assessment (FBA), a highly regarded strategy that parents and professionals can use to identify the factors contributing to the problem behavior. As the book explains, children and adults with ASDs are susceptible to unwanted behaviors due to difficulties with communication skills, social skills, and narrow interests. For example, a nonverbal adult engages in head-banging to obtain beads reserved for times when he needs calming; a child with social skills deficits inappropriately seeks attention by hitting classmates; or an adolescent hyperfocused on one tv program irritates everyone by constantly talking about it. An FBA helps to determine what purpose the behavior serves for the individual and the specific circumstances that led to learning the behavior in the first place. Later on, the assessment is used to develop an intervention plan to help the individual unlearn the behavior.

Anyone can learn the basics of FBA. The book’s step-by-step explanations, forms, and case studies make it easy for parents and professionals to:

  • Decide which challenging behavior to address
  • Select members of an FBA team
  • Measure behavior
  • Gather information from other observers
  • Establish a baseline
  • Observe a problem behavior
  • Test the hypothesis about the function of the behavior
  • Begin to plan for an intervention
  • Troubleshoot
With Functional Behavior Assessment for People with Autism caregivers are well on the way to breaking down the barriers created by challenging behavior. A forthcoming sequel will thoroughly address how to develop an effective behavioral intervention plan.

A detailed and excellent guide 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book contains valuable documentation of individuals with Asperger's or HFA, problems that arise and how many of the situations can be resolved. There are some great ideas on making worksheets and charts for the individual to track his/her own emotions. This book really helps someone to realize their potential as functioning members of society. It really gives the tools to one with Asperger's to understand and comprehend the world around them.

Great Book 4 out of 5 stars.

This book has been very helpful and my child enjoys learning from it, glad I made the purchase.

Very helpful 5 out of 5 stars.

Although I haven't purchased a copy of this book, I once read a copy that I borrowed from a library, and I found it very helpful.

As someone with Asperger's Syndrome myself, I know that if there had been books like this 30 years ago, I would have learned much earlier in life what things are appropriate to do and say in what situation. It's too bad that there were no books like this until recent years!

Editorial Review:

This important new book offers a definitive program with forms, exercises, and guides for the student. It also presents significant educational guidance and supportive assistance to caregivers and teachers.

Editorial Review:

Teaching Conversation to Children with Autism describes scripts that parents and teachers can use to help children learn to initiate conversation, thereby improving communication. Drs. McClannahan and Krantz—-authors of Activity Schedules for Children with Autism—-have successfully used scripts and script-fading techniques based on their clinical observations and research, and founded on applied behavior analysis principles.

The authors begin by thoroughly explaining the script and script-fading processes and include many examples to support the instructions. A script is an audiotaped or written word, phrase, or sentence that often reflects the child’s preferences and interests. For very young children and nonreaders, scripts are paired with pictures of desired objects or activities.

The process starts when a child engages in conversation with an interaction partner by reading a script or playing it on an audio card reader to start the conversation (e.g., "I like yogurt"). The partner supports the conversation with a response (e.g., "Yogurt is good," or "You had yogurt for lunch"). After the child masters a few scripts, the script-fading process begins. The last word of the script is removed, then the next to last, and so on, until the script is absent. After scripts have been introduced and faded, many children learn to spontaneously initiate and pursue social interaction.

Teaching Conversation to Children with Autism also covers:

  • Prompts and rewards
  • Observing, evaluating, and measuring results
  • Activity schedules, card readers, and voice recorders
  • Conversation activities
  • Scripts for readers and nonreaders
Teaching Conversation to Children with Autism demonstrates that scripts are a valuable tool to improve interaction for children and even adolescents and adults. Use scripts at home, in school, in the workplace, and in the community.

(2008 IPPY Awards: Bronze Medalist, Education/Academic/Testing)

Most of us use visual supports in our daily lives--for example, a shopping list, calendar, or a roadmap. Visual supports are particularly beneficial to people with autism because they help make abstract concepts concrete and capitalize on the user's inherent visual learning strengths.

VISUAL SUPPORTS FOR PEOPLE WITH AUTISM shows parents and educators how incorporating these aids while teaching can improve academic performance, behavior, interaction with others, and self-help skills. In a friendly, conversational-style, the authors, both certified behavior analysts, describe the deficits typical of autism--language, memory, temporal sequential skills, attention, motivation, and social skills--and present strategies to use visual supports to address those issues at school and home.

This guide presents an abundance of examples, illustrated by dozens of black & white and color photos, including: activity schedules; calendars; charts; checklists; color coding; flip books; graphic organizers; mnemonics; nametags; photo boards; Power Cards; scripts; Social Stories; to-do lists; and video modeling.

VISUAL SUPPORTS also explains considerations such as portability, durability, preferences, age appropriateness, and effectiveness. While visual supports can enhance learning, they should, however, eventually be eliminated to avoid over-dependence on them. An entire chapter describes different ways to fade visual supports.

With this book, there's no limit to what can be taught, from fostering social interaction by using a graphic organizer of conversational talking points to learning to put away toys from video modeling. Most of the visual supports presented in this book are low-tech and easy-to-use, making it simple for parents and professionals to create their own, suited to the needs of their students. Inspiring success stories will further motivate parents and professionals to get started.

great book! 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

I have taught 5 children with down syndrome how to read, based on the information I recieved from this book. I work in the school district with children with DS and tutor them after school as well. I could never have had the success I have had without the information the author provides in this book.

This book is a must have 5 out of 5 stars.

it is extremely helpful, in only 2 months my daughter at 6 years old was up to 30 site words without picture cues. (Her first attempt at actually reading) The book contains alot of helpful activities, simply spelled out in step by step directions for anyone to understand.

Read it early 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book. I wish I'd gotten it when my son was little! It provides great information about how to teach kids with DS to read, but also has great stories of real kids and their accomplishments. I'd recommend that anybody with a DS child buy the book early (when their baby is little), and read the first few chapters. It'll inspire them, mitigate some of the worries they have about their child's future, and introduce them to the important concept that although people with DS are generally slower to develop, their learning disabilities can be mitigated by teaching them in a way that is effective for the way they think (e.g., kids with DS are visual learners), rather than the "standard" way. My four year old has actually had better success with the Love and Learning videotapes and books than the flash card approach described in the book, but the principal is pretty much the same.

Editorial Review:

Teach your child to read using the author's nationally recognized, proven method. From introducing the alphabet to writing and spelling, the lessons are easy to follow. The many pictures and flash cards included appeal to visual learners and are easy to photocopy!

Editorial Review:

TEACHING MATH TO PEOPLE WITH DOWN SYNDROME is the book that everyone has been waiting for! Now parents and educators can use this guide to teach meaningful math to students--with and without learning problems--who struggle with understanding computation, number concepts, and when and how to use these skills. The author, an experienced educator, was inspired to write TEACHING MATH to meet the needs of hands-on learners after observing the difficulty her adult son with Down syndrome and his peers had in applying math skills to everyday life. For years, the math program explained in TEACHING MATH has been successfully used with preschoolers, children, and adults with Down syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and other cognitive disabilities. Its success lies in capitalizing on the visual learning strengths of these concrete learners and using manipulatives, games, and activities to teach and maintain motivation. A key feature of this method is the early introduction of the calculator, which allows students to progress in their understanding of math without having to memorize math facts. This book can be used to help students learn the critical math survival skills needed for living independently or help students in their math curricula at school. Book I covers introductory math skills typically taught in preschool or elementary school, but which many older students still need help with, including: Number sense Recognizing & writing numerals Time Calculator skills Counting Measurements Addition Place value Shapes Subtraction Money The second volume of TEACHING MATH will focus on more advanced math skills needed for independent living, including multiplication, division, banking, budgeting, and consumer skills. TEACHING MATH gives parents and teachers high-interest, hands-on strategies and ideas for teaching math to learners of all ages.
