Editorial Review:

From a distinguished clinician, pioneer in working with behaviorally challenging kids, and author of the acclaimed The Explosive Child comes a groundbreaking approach for understanding and helping these kids and transforming school discipline.

Frequent visits to the principal's office. Detentions. Suspensions. Expulsions. These are the established tools of school discipline for kids who don't abide by school rules, have a hard time getting along with other kids, don't seem to respect authority, don't seem interested in learning, and are disrupting the learning of their classmates. But there's a big problem with these strategies: They are ineffective for most of the students to whom they are applied.

It's time for a change in course.

Here, Dr. Ross W. Greene presents an enlightened, clear-cut, and practical alternative. Relying on research from the neurosciences, Dr. Greene offers a new conceptual framework for understanding the difficulties of kids with behavioral challenges and explains why traditional discipline isn't effective at addressing these difficulties. Emphasizing the revolutionarily simple and positive notion that kids do well if they can, he persuasively argues that kids with behavioral challenges are not attention-seeking, manipulative, limit-testing, coercive, or unmotivated, but that they lack the skills to behave adaptively. And when adults recognize the true factors underlying difficult behavior and teach kids the skills in increments they can handle, the results are astounding: The kids overcome their obstacles; the frustration of teachers, parents, and classmates diminishes; and the well-being and learning of all students are enhanced.

In Lost at School, Dr. Greene describes how his road-tested, evidence-based approach -- called Collaborative Problem Solving -- can help challenging kids at school.

His lively, compelling narrative includes:

• tools to identify the triggers and lagging skills underlying challenging behavior.

• explicit guidance on how to radically improve interactions with challenging kids -- along with many examples showing how it's done.

• dialogues, Q & A's, and the story, which runs through the book, of one child and his teachers, parents, and school.

• practical guidance for successful planning and collaboration among teachers, parents, administrations, and kids.

Backed by years of experience and research, and written with a powerful sense of hope and achievable change, Lost at School gives teachers and parents the realistic strategies and information to impact the classroom experience of every challenging kid.

Great for all kids, helpful for parents and teachers 5 out of 5 stars.

I have bought and given several copies of this book. It helps give a language to feelings that might otherwise be hard to describe.

Works great for my 4 yr. old 5 out of 5 stars.

I used this book with my barely 4 year old (developmentally normal) who has 'anger management' issues that originate with anxiety. There are pages in the book that we were able to write or draw pictures of how he felt. The scale of 1 (calm and safe) to 5 (out of control) was a concept that he grasped right away. He is getting better and better at recognizing when he's getting worried before he gets to a 5. If he does lose control and melts down, just the verbal cue "what number are you at" or asking him to calm down and try to get back to a 1 or 2, and he immediately starts to use his strategies - deep breathing, squeezing hands, thinking happy thoughts. I love this book.

Worry Book for Kids 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a really cute book for kids who worry. It is not real meaty but the concept is great. It helps them put worry into perspective and gives a scale to help prioritize worries.

This book has been very helpful with my Asperger son and my non-Asperger son. As a teachers aide, I have used it the the kids at school and some teachers have borrowed my book and are using it themselves. It has pages to copy so that you can make your own 5-point scale. Just wonderful!!!

Finally 5 out of 5 stars.

Finally, a basic book listing basic skills for people who do not understand "thinking outside the box." I'm so happy to see something that can help educators and families find hands-on techniques for those who are clueless, hopeless, and helpless.

A must buy for any adult working with a special needs child 5 out of 5 stars.

You can make this work for just about any problem. I now just hold up a finger and my child knows what I am trying to say even my younger child is getting it.

5 Stars for this Hands On Easy to Follow Guide 5 out of 5 stars.

I received this book for Christmas to add to my autism library and what a wonderful treat. I wish I had this books several years ago when I started working in a class with children who have severe autism. It's so basic and has such great sample charts. It breaks down so many behavior challenges and creates simple charts to help you help your students better understand how to self modulate...from Aspergers to severe, these tools work. They seem so basic, yet I have seen them work great over and over. This basic and easy to quickly read resource should be given to every teacher, parent, administrator, speech and occupational therapist who works with kids on the spectrum. It's a great starting point for managing behavior problems...big and small. Check out Ms. Buron's other related books also at www.asperger.net. Joanna Keating-Velasco, Author...

Eye opening 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I needed this book for a class I was taking. WOW!, it was a real eye-opener. As it was really hard to read because it is sad. How amazing that there are schools here in the United States that are in dire need. I would reccomend it, but be prepared to cry.

Must Read 5 out of 5 stars.

Kozol's Savage Inequalities paints a frightening picture of urban schools in the United States. He describes schools that are overcrowded, dilapidated, and flooded with sewage. He asks why we allow our children to go to schools in conditions where none of us would choose to work. He deeply explores the issue of inequality in funding. While he does suggest equalizing funding, he is careful to mention that the problems facing schools are complex and require innovative solutions. I know many teachers have read this book, but we need policymakers and elected officials to read it as well.

Editorial Review:

National Book Award-winning author Jonathan Kozol presents his shocking account of the American educational system in this stunning New York Times bestseller, which has sold more than 250,000 hardcover copies.

Editorial Review:

Finally a social skills program that covers all the bases!

Whether it's learning how long one can look at somebody without being accused of staring; how to shift topics, despite one's desire to stick with that all-consuming special interest; how to say no to peer pressure; or dealing with a sensitive topic - it's all here...and more. In this comprehensive and user-friendly book, the author translates years of experience working with students with Asperger Syndrome and social-communication difficulties. After brief introductory chapters on skills to target, instructional strategies, behavior management, promoting generalization, etc., as well as a special chapter by Brenda Smith Myles on relevant characteristics of autism spectrum disorders, the reader is presented with the essence of this must-have resource: 70 of the skills that most commonly cause difficulty for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and social-communication problems. The presentation of each skill consists of a reproducible skill handout, as well as activity sheets listing ways teachers and parents can demonstrate, practice, and reinforce the skill in the classroom and at home. A concluding chapter on promoting peer acceptance offers sensitivity training programs for both students of various age groups and school staff, making this a complete social skills training package for students of all ages.

Parent of special needs child & advocate 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a great quick read for parents just learning about goals and objectives as well as a nice resource to have around to refer to when you are going over IEP goals and objectives. It is an easy read, clear and has been a valuable tool to educate parents who want to be a more active or involved member of their child's IEP. For those of you who want the goals to really have meaning I strongly recommend this book.

great stuff! 5 out of 5 stars.

I am new to writing IEPs and now writing the transition goals for a young adult program. This book has been so helpful in making sure everything is up to par. In fact, our IEP co-ordinator was impressed with my first efforts and has used some of my work in plan of care meetings.

Not bad for a beginner!

Editorial Review:

A guide to quick and effective writing of accurate and measurable IEP goals and objectives. IEPs are necessary, required by law and when done properly can be extremely helpful in guiding the student's educational trajectory. This book, written by two of the foremost special educators and IEP legal experts is designed to bring you up to speed whether you're just entering the field or have worked in it for years.

What a great idea...... 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 25 people found this review helpful.

Power Cards is a great tool in helping some autistic children modify and/or change their inappropriate behavior. It might not be the right tool for all autistic children, but for some it can really open up doors to social appropriateness and development. The examples are great and the clinical results listed in the book give a great deal of credibility to this strategy.

Review 2 out of 5 stars.

This book is for higher functioning individuals on the spectrum. It is for kids with very high coginitive abilities and comunication skills. The idea behind this book is to use the sometimes rigid interests of kids on the spectrum and teach them socially appropriate skills.

Great concept 5 out of 5 stars.

I received the book quickly in great packing and condition. I think this concept will be helpful for kids who need a simpler approach to social stories.

Power Cards - Why?? 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

After reading the positive revievs of this book I decided to buy it, and I was sorely disappointed. The author seems to have had some level of success with some ASD children by using potential special interests to modify behaviour, by telling that "a Spice Girl" would never do that..

The idea is good and might help sometime, but I found th book extremely narcicistic and belitteling.

It should have been a 3 page note instead of a book, and it would have been better for it!

Great idea for helping understand both feelings and reactions. 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Great for using at home with kids up to elementary school. I gave it as a gift and it was extremely useful. Gives examples of what might be causing the feelings. Gives a standard language for both parents and children to be clear about which feeling is being discussed. The definitions of big, medium and small feelings with discussion of how to keep reactions at a similar level has been a lifesaver for us.

Very useful tool in assisting students with Asperger's syndrome to learn about and develop control over their feelings.

Editorial Review:

My Book Full of Emotions: How to Control and React to the SIZE of Your Emotions This book will help teach children to identify, access the intensity of and respond appropriately to their emotions. This book is fully interactive and uses a dry-erase marker so that unique situations and solutions can be added and changed with a wipe of a paper towel, as the child masters a skill and grows. Also included is a Communication Pad for tracking and sharing information between home and school.
