This Has Everything 5 out of 5 stars.

If you are interested in cooking you will love this book. Anything and everything that has to do with it is in it. I own and use numerous cookbooks, but none of them compare. This book explains the "why" of technics. It goes from the basics to the complicated, from history to todays modern kitchens. From now on this will be the first cookbook I turn to. Love it!

Very Good 5 out of 5 stars.

I am very pleased with this book and I recieved it very quickly and was in very good condition.

If I could only carry only one "cook book" this would be it. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I originally discovered this textbook on a culinary school syllabus. I worked through it on my own and put its principles into action learning more from it than any other single book. The recipes are easy to scale, and the nutritional breakdown is excellent. The recipes are practical, from the basics like mother sauces; to actual hotel and restaurant recipes from some of the finest chefs across the country. It covers: the history of the culinary arts, tools and equipment, and breaks down fundamental concepts on cooking from vegetables to pastry with easy to follow instructions and photos. If I could only carry one "cook book" this would be it.

I'm inspired 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Well researched and considered. Thorough, yet practical and attainable. I appreciated learning about all the different types of root cellars and how to build them. Previous to reading this book, a root cellar to me was and expensive underground project with stairs and cement walls and electricity. Until I can afford that we can inexpensively create/build/dig the other options.

Excellent Book 4 out of 5 stars.

Lots of alternatives to canning and freezing. A very interesting read while you dream of your very own root cellar!

Root Cellaring 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was very educational. Gave me information on foods I didn't think could be cellared. A lot of insight. Again, I checked this out of the library and liked it enough to purchase it.

Basic and a bit wordy 3 out of 5 stars.

I am happy I bought the book, but it is a bit wordy. Good lists, but no good cellers that can be build from the book. Just lots of examples. A good starter to make you think hard if Root Cellering is for you.

Editorial Review:

It was the most expensive bottle of wine ever sold.

In 1985, at a heated auction by Christie’s of London, a 1787 bottle of Château Lafite Bordeaux—one of a cache of bottles unearthed in a bricked-up Paris cellar and supposedly owned by Thomas Jefferson—went for $156,000 to a member of the Forbes family. The discoverer of the bottle was pop-band manager turned wine collector Hardy Rodenstock, who had a knack for finding extremely old and exquisite wines. But rumors about the bottle soon arose. Why wouldn’t Rodenstock reveal the exact location where it had been found? Was it part of a smuggled Nazi hoard? Or did his reticence conceal an even darker secret?

It would take more than two decades for those questions to be answered and involve a gallery of intriguing players—among them Michael Broadbent, the bicycle-riding British auctioneer who speaks of wines as if they are women and staked his reputation on the record-setting sale; Serena Sutcliffe, Broadbent’s elegant archrival, whose palate is covered by a hefty insurance policy; and Bill Koch, the extravagant Florida tycoon bent on exposing the truth about Rodenstock.

Pursuing the story from Monticello to London to Zurich to Munich and beyond, Benjamin Wallace also offers a mesmerizing history of wine, complete with vivid accounts of subterranean European laboratories where old vintages are dated and of Jefferson’s colorful, wine-soaked days in France, where he literally drank up the culture.

Suspenseful, witty, and thrillingly strange, The Billionaire’s Vinegar is the vintage tale of what could be the most elaborate con since the Hitler diaries. It is also the debut of an exceptionally powerful new voice in narrative non-fiction.

A revolution in cooking

Sous vide is the culinary innovation that has everyone in the food world talking. In this revolutionary new cookbook, Thomas Keller, America's most respected chef, explains why this foolproof technique, which involves cooking at precise temperatures below simmering, yields results that other culinary methods cannot. For the first time, one can achieve short ribs that are meltingly tender even when cooked medium rare. Fish, which has a small window of doneness, is easier to finesse, and shellfish stays succulent no matter how long it's been on the stove. Fruit and vegetables benefit, too, retaining color and flavor while undergoing remarkable transformations in texture.

The secret to sous vide is in discovering the precise amount of heat required to achieve the most sublime results. Through years of trial and error, Keller and his chefs de cuisine have blazed the trail to perfection—and they show the way in this collection of never-before-published recipes from his landmark restaurants—The French Laundry in Napa Valley and per se in New York. With an introduction by the eminent food-science writer Harold McGee, and artful photography by Deborah Jones, who photographed Keller's best-selling The French Laundry Cookbook, this book will be a must for every culinary professional and anyone who wants to up the ante and experience food at the highest level.

Highly-recommend 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Although my family is not vegan, I try to cook vegan at least twice a week. I have 2 elementary-aged school children with multiple food allergies. Jennifer's recipes are easy and delicious. Our family is eating much healthier thanks to Jennifer's book. There are so many choices for my kids to try. Since following Jennifer's recipes I have found that I like the taste of baked goods made without egg. Before Jennifer's book, I would often get heartburn after eating meals. Since eating healthier, I feel better and the kids often request food that is made with whole wheat or flax seed instead of processed flour. Jennifer...thank you! Food allergies can be dealt with much easier by following vegan recipes. You have improved the quality or my children's lives greatly. I had no idea it was so easy to bake foods without egg or dairy in them. A huge thank you!

Great starter book - not pretentious, just delicious 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I love this book! I was attracted to the simplicity of preparation and the nutritional benefits of raw foods. I noticed that "raw food" was some kind of concept or entity a few months ago and was immediately fascinated - no dealing with a hot oven or stove, no heavy greasy pans, delicious ways to eat more vegetables and get more nutrients, no worries about heat destroying nutrients, and NO POTS AND PANS TO CLEAN!

Cornbleet made this book easy to read (good layout with good use of white space), lots of enticing photos, extremely clear and concise instructions, and with individuals or couples in mind (recipes are for 1 or 2 people).

I am having a great time making raw marinara sauce (my carnivorous hunter husband says it is the best marinara sauce he's tasted), walnut pate (so delicious!), almond cream, key lime pie, and green smoothies - all from this book. I love not having to heat anything. I am also making traditional dishes the raw "way" (no heating) and substituting beans or tofu (not considered raw) because it's so easy and far more flavorful!

If I had known about this way of eating when I moved into my first apartment, I could have had a blender and a food processor and just bought lots of fresh fruits, veggies, seeds, nuts, oils, maybe some bread and yogurt, but you get the picture - minimal appliances, minimal mess, and maximum space, nutrition, and energy.

This book has simple recipes that make preparing and eating your raw vegetables and fruits truly easy, pleasurable, and delicious. None of the recipes require a dehydrator. A few of the other raw food books radiate "Hey, look at me, I'm a really cool yuppie bohemian in a cool boho location whose social life revolves around raw foods and cool friends with plenty of expendable income and time" but this one is not; the focus is on the food. Raw Food Made Easy is a simple, no nonsense, inexpensive approach to making foods (that we already eat raw) infinitely more interesting and satisfying. I can't recommend this book enough. The Boutenkos are also excellent resources for raw foods.

Editorial Review:

Although raw foods have gained tremendous popularity in recent years, some people are put off by the work and equipment needed for dehydrating and the extensive preparation required for gourmet raw food dishes. In answer to their pleas, veteran raw food chef Jennifer Cornbleet provides a host of quick and easy raw recipes for breakfasts, main meals, and desserts--in smaller portions for 1 or 2. Essential time-saving tips and techniques, along with Jennifer's clear instructions, prove you don't have to toil in the kitchen in order to enjoy nutritious, delicious raw food.

With Raw Food Made Easy:

  • Choose from over 100 foolproof recipes, along with lunch and dinner menu plans
  • Enjoy easy recipes that call for common ingredients and equipment
  • Learn how to avoid health-busters like white sugar, white flour, and trans-fats

Beware 18 inch grill owners! Adapt or die! 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This a a great book for creative grill masters. One caveat: if you own an 18 inch weber kettle, be sure to adapt the coal amounts for your smaller grill. Otherwise you will fry your food faster than a hyper-active pyro. The author never bothers to mention how much fuel to use for various sizes of charcoal grills. Not once in the entire book. So, be carefull grill-jockeys and adjust down or up as needed. Otherwise, yum.

The Book for Grilling Beginners or Masters 4 out of 5 stars.

Steve Raichlen is the King of grilling and in his book "How to Grill", Steve covers everything you need to know about grilling. Written so that even someone who has never grilled can start from purchasing a grill to in-depth tips and techniques that even a backyard grilling warrior can learn from.

The book includes sections on the different types of grills, heat sources and grilling techniques such as smoking, direct and in-direct grilling. It also lists all the tools and accessories that you will need to get started.

Thoughtfully laid out the book's recipe sections is carefully divided into catergories. Contents of book include getting started, beef and veal, pork and sausages, lamb, chicken and more, fish, shellfish, vegetables, desserts, rubs, sauces, and condiments and grills and gear.

A Great Way to Transition 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

For years, I have had the "knowledge" in regards to eating more raw healthy foods, but cravings have gotten in the way of the type of success I've dreamed of. Victoria changed my perspective by showing we can focus our concentration on good health by drinking delicious green smoothies. The cravings are fading faster than I could have imagined. IN addition, I turned my neighbor on to this book. She came for a visit after two weeks of green smoothies, and said she was eternally grateful, let me know that out of all the things I've done for her, turning her on to this book was the greatest. Drinking the smoothies have already changed her life on every level. Get this book to see how easy improving you health can be.

Editorial Review:

In search of the perfect human diet, Victoria Boutenko compares the standard American diet with the diet of wild chimpanzees. Chimpanzees share an estimated 99.4% of genes with humans, but their diet is dramatically different from ours. The most glaring difference is that chimpanzees consume significantly more green leaves than humans. Victoria developed a series of greens smoothies that enable anyone to consume the necessary amount of greens in a very palatable way.
