Love conquers all . . . including pedophilia? 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I'm rather shocked by the fanfare for this novel. The sexual escapades were nauseating, and I vomited in my mouth a little when I read about the pedophilia, which Marquez excuses with a shrug of the shoulders and a wave of the hand. And while the idea of unrequited love can be noble, and the thought of seniors feeling giddy again is sweet, there was nothing of nobility, and little sweetness in this book. Love conquers all? Hardly. Fermina Daza was correct the majority of her life; stay away from Florentino Ariza. Don't waste your precious time and degrade your sense of morality in the process.

Editorial Review:

In their youth, Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza fall passionately in love. When Fermina eventually chooses to marry a wealthy, well-born doctor, Florentino is devastated, but he is a romantic. As he rises in his business career he whiles away the years in 622 affairs--yet he reserves his heart for Fermina. Her husband dies at last, and Florentino purposefully attends the funeral. Fifty years, nine months, and four days after he first declared his love for Fermina, he will do so again.

i just recently reread this book and i am just as "in awe" today as i was 20 yrs ago. the story of good vs evil is a "grab you" and take you for a non stop nail biting ride. i really like the uncut version as you get the little back storys that you did not get 1st time around. i loved mother abigail(the messiah figure)i like that she was all to human ,i liked stu's quiet strength, randall flagg's supreme evil, larry's uncertanity,i have always liked stephan king's books, but for me this is his best effort.

One of his crowning achievements 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the best book stephan king has ever written. Sadness, terror, and a happy ending make this book amazing. It will keep you on the edge of your seat for the full 1141 pages.

Editorial Review:

It's the end of the world...

as only Stephen king could imagine it.

Humanity has been all but wiped out by a lethal virus. But the survivors are divided by light and darkness, and must face a final battle that will decide the fate of more than their lives: their very souls...

Editorial Review:

"The fulfilled renown of Moby-Dick and of As I Lay Dying is augmented by Blood Meridian, since Cormac McCarthy is the worthy disciple both of Melville and Faulkner," writes esteemed literary scholar Harold Bloom in his Introduction to the Modern Library edition. "I venture that no other living American novelist, not even Pynchon, has given us a book as strong and memorable."

Cormac McCarthy's masterwork, Blood Meridian, chronicles the brutal world of the Texas-Mexico borderlands in the mid-nineteenth century. Its wounded hero, the teenage Kid, must confront the extraordinary violence of the Glanton gang, a murderous cadre on an official mission to scalp Indians and sell those scalps. Loosely based on fact, the novel represents a genius vision of the historical West, one so fiercely realized that since its initial publication in 1985 the canon of American literature has welcomed Blood Meridian to its shelf.

"A classic American novel of regeneration through violence," declares Michael Herr. "McCarthy can only be compared to our greatest writers."

Get ready to relive these times soon! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The second Steinbeck book that I've read as an adult, and probably one of the best books I've ever read. I had no idea California was so messed up until I read it. Unlike some modern readers who may complain about the alternating chapters, one dealing with plot and the other with seemingly irrelevant information, I thought that they added a lot to the book and gave it the feeling that there was more to it than just the story of one family. Everyone needs to read this book. The movie's also great, and I can't say that either one is better than the other.

[Good] required reading 4 out of 5 stars.

Yup, I'm one of the freaks who actually likes this book, despite my roommate's information that it is highly melodramaticized. I don't care. I think it's great writing, and I love the interspersing stories that have nothing to do with the plot, and yet are so insightful.

Sorry, but I was actually touched.

Forced from their home, the Joad family is lured to California to find work; instead they find disillusionment, exploitation, and hunger.

Well written with disturbingly unique character 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I did the unspeakable, I watched the movie (most of it) first. Unfortunately I was therefore recalling all of the images that had been provided for me. Although I do think it made it easier for me to follow the story line since a lot of situations were left for you to figure out on your own. I recommend this to read but not for the faint of heart nor for children. The movie is also very watered down in comparison to the book.

One hell of a book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I loved the movie and finally took it upon myself to seek out the source material, which I have to say is a superb read. The book clocks in at just over 300 pages and it's a really quick read. Still, the book's length and ease to get through don't take away from its power. The book is written so well that as I was reading it, I could easily imagine the Coen Brothers having absolutely no problems with adapting the book for the screen. It literally reads like a detail for detail description of the movie, of course with extra little scenes and lines of dialogue. Every passage is vividly described and its very easy to translate McCarthy's words into corresponding images. His writing tends to be sparse but easy to follow. Truth be told, I've never read an author who not once uses quotation marks to denote dialogue. Still, the characters voices are each their own and their actions and outcomes make perfect sense. Even though the movie leaves very little out from the book, the book manages to make certain story details clearer than how they may have been presented in the film itself. The character of Sheriff Bell is probably one of the most honest voices I have ever heard (or in this case, read) in a novel. I know a lot of people don't fully get the title of this work but its with this character in particular that you understand not just the title but the general attitude and pessimism of people sick of an ever changing world where things seem to be getting a whole lot worse than a whole lot better. Great read and I guess as good a place as any to start with Cormac McCarthy's work.

Editorial Review:

In No Country for Old Men, Cormac McCarthy simultaneously strips down the American crime novel and broadens its concerns to encompass themes as ancient as the Bible and as bloodily contemporary as this morning’s headlines.

Southern Florida in the early 20th century and one black woman's story 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This 1937 novel has become a classic of its time. It is a mere 184 pages long, but the edition of the book I read is packed by commentary. I skipped this commentary because I wasn't particularly interested in literary or social analysis. I just wanted to experience the book for itself and the story it told. Reading it this way, I actually "felt" the book in the way the author intended. And, "wow", I really understand why it has stood the test of time.

Set in her native Florida, we first meet Janie Crawford, a black woman in her 40s, when she returns to the town of Eatonville. She's been gone for a few years because she left town with a younger man named Tea Cake, who she married after she was widowed. As she tells her woman-friend her story, the reader is cast into her world.

Born the granddaughter of a slave, she was married young to a farmer who wanted more of a farm worker than a wife. She then ran away with a traveling salesman and moved to an all-black town where her new husband became the mayor. They had a general store and he expected her to run it, keeping her hair covered so that her beauty didn't show, and expecting her to be the perfect wife in the eyes of his world. She was unhappy but accepted this and nursed him through a long illness. When he died, she ran the store herself where she met Tea Cake, who appreciated her good qualities and completely adored her. Against the wishes of the people in the town, she ran away with him.

All of the characters in this book come across as real people. All have flaws and all have strengths. For example, even though Tea Cake stole her money and lost it all gambling, he begged her forgiveness, managed to pay back the money and was a devoted husband. He got a job in the Florida Everglades where both he and she worked hard and loved hard and were part of a community. And then, they were swept up in a devastating hurricane. It was awful. Lots of people died. They had to swim for their lives amidst the horror around them. While trying to save her, Tea Cake is bitten by a dog. Only later do we discover the dog was rabid and that Tea Cake himself has rabies. He turns on Janie then and there are dire results.

The book moved fast. I was glued to it but it took some getting used to because it was written in the Southern Black dialect of the time. This actually made the characters even more real to me. She did not necessarily preach about segregation. To her it was a "given". However, I was particularly moved by the part where she described the aftermath of the hurricane and how the black men were rounded up to bury the bodies of the dead. They had to carefully separate the white bodies from the black bodies. The whites got coffins and were buried in one section. The blacks did not get coffins and were thrown into a pit. Often it was impossible for them to know the race of the decomposing bodies. To me, this said more about segregation in the South than anything else I've ever read on the subject.

This is a very worthwhile book. I loved it.

Editorial Review:

One of the most important works of twentieth-century American literature, Zora Neale Hurston's beloved 1937 classic, Their Eyes Were Watching God, is an enduring Southern love story sparkling with wit, beauty, and heartfelt wisdom. Told in the captivating voice of a woman who refuses to live in sorrow, bitterness, fear, or foolish romantic dreams, it is the story of fair-skinned, fiercely independent Janie Crawford, and her evolving selfhood through three marriages and a life marked by poverty, trials, and purpose. A true literary wonder, Hurston's masterwork remains as relevant and affecting today as when it was first published -- perhaps the most widely read and highly regarded novel in the entire canon of African American literature.

One of the most popular books in American Literature-and for good reason! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This wonderful book is one of the most popular books written by Nobel prize winner-John Steinbeck.

It is also probably one of the most popular books in American Literature.

Set during The Great Depression,The story is about two migrant farm workers-George Milton(who is a cynical man) and Lennie Small(who is very big, strong but mentally disabled and reliant on George to look after him) and how they dream of owning their own piece of land.

Due to something Lennie has done(which was actually sort of a misunderstanding),the pair must go to a ranch in Soledad,California, to make money and escape the trouble they are in.

The book is an amazing tale of friendship and the heartbreaking thing George must do at the end to save his friend Lennie is so touching.

I first read this book for GCSE and it is now one of my favourite's.

It is a definite 'must read' and I would recommend it 100%

Editorial Review:

Anne Rice’s second book in her hugely ambitious and courageous life of Christ begins during his last winter before his baptism in the Jordan and concludes with the miracle at Cana.

It is a novel in which we see Jesus—he is called Yeshua bar Joseph—during a winter of no rain, endless dust, and talk of trouble in Judea.

Legends of a Virgin birth have long surrounded Yeshua, yet for decades he has lived as one among many who come to the synagogue on the Sabbath. All who know and love him find themselves waiting for some sign of the path he will eventually take.

And at last we see him emerge from his baptism to confront his destiny—and the Devil. We see what happens when he takes the water of six great limestone jars, transforms it into cool red wine, is recognized as the anointed one, and urged to call all Israel to take up arms against Rome and follow him as the prophets have foretold.

As with Out of Egypt, the opening novel, The Road to Cana is based on the Gospels and on the most respected New Testament scholarship. The book’s power derives from the profound feeling its author brings to the writing and the way in which she summons up the presence of Jesus.
