Editorial Review:

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille delivers the long-awaited follow-up to his classic novel The Gold Coast.

When John Sutter's aristocratic wife killed her mafia don lover, John left America and set out in his sailboat on a three-year journey around the world, eventually settling in London. Now, ten years later, he has come home to the Gold Coast, that stretch of land on the North Shore of Long Island that once held the greatest concentration of wealth and power in America, to attend the imminent funeral of an old family servant. Taking up temporary residence in the gatehouse of Stanhope Hall, John finds himself living only a quarter of a mile from Susan who has also returned to Long Island. But Susan isn't the only person from John's past who has reemerged: Though Frank Bellarosa, infamous Mafia don and Susan's ex-lover, is long dead, his son, Anthony, is alive and well, and intent on two missions: Drawing John back into the violent world of the Bellarosa family, and exacting revenge on his father's murderer--Susan Sutter. At the same time, John and Susan's mutual attraction resurfaces and old passions begin to reignite, and John finds himself pulled deeper into a familiar web of seduction and betrayal. In THE GATE HOUSE, acclaimed author Nelson Demille brings us back to that fabled spot on the North Shore -- a place where past, present, and future collides with often unexpected results.

Editorial Review:

The devastatingly intense new thriller by #1 New York Times bestselling phenomenon Vince Flynn

Counterterrorism operative Mitch Rapp and his colleague Mike Nash may have met their match. The CIA has detected and intercepted two terrorist cells, but a third is feared to be on the loose. Led by a dangerous mastermind obsessed with becoming the leader of al-Qaeda, this determined and terrifying group is about to descend on America.

Rapp needs the best on this assignment, and Nash, who has served his government honorably for sixteen years, is his choice. Together, they have never wavered in the fight against the jihadists and their culture of death. Both have fought the war on terrorism in secret without accolades or acknowledgment of their personal sacrifices. Both have been forced to lie to virtually every single person they care about, and both have soldiered on with the knowledge that their hard work and lethal tactics have saved thousands of lives. But the political winds have changed in America, and certain leaders on Capitol Hill are pushing to have men like Rapp and Nash put back on a short leash. And then one spring afternoon in Washington, DC, everything changes.

Using his insider knowledge of intelligence agencies and the military, Flynn once again delivers an all-too-real portrayal of a war that is waged every day by a handful of brave, devoted souls. Smart, fast-paced, and jaw-droppingly realistic, Extreme Measures is the political thriller of our time.

Lives up to the promise of his first medieval novel 4 out of 5 stars.

I had greatly enjoyed Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth, and so I was looking forward to World Without End. While not exactly a sequel, his second medieval novel picks up in the same town of Kingsbridge two and a half centuries later, so that his first novel is the local history and its characters the ancestors of the characters of his second novel. It completely lived up to my expectations, and held me rapt. Once again he has woven a fascinating tale of love, ambition (both lofty and venial), and intrigue around an engaging set of characters, and enriched with a depth of historical context. While engrossed in the struggles of an independent-minded woman, an excellent architect with a poor start in life, a brutish knight, and a scheming prior, I inadvertently learned a heap of history, such as the economic development of medieval English boroughs, the wars of King Edward III in France, and the principles of medieval medicine. It was fascinating to me to learn things like how the wool trade gave way to the cloth trade, how feudal lords lost control of their tenant laborers, what the experience of the Plague was like, and how brutal the English invaders were in France. (That last item gives me a new appreciation for the famous Rodin sculpture The Burghers of Calais.) These historical details are not the least bit pedantic, but are vividly described, forming integral background to the rich tapestry of Follett's gripping characters and story. Through a span of a generation, the story explores, among other themes, the interesting question of what options were available for a smart, independent woman in the mid-14th century. I thoroughly enjoyed this fascinating historical tale.

My Favorite Book 5 out of 5 stars.

The Secret Lives of Bees is easily my favorite. I read it quiet a while ago, and recently re-read it. I fell in love with May, June and August all over again. The chemisty between the characters is vivid. There is not many books out there that I can picture/imagine as I read it, except this one. Each sentence I read is like I am watching or I am actually there. The authors diction pulls the audience in and captures you. This is a fast read, which also makes it very enjoyable. From begining, middle, to end I was hooked all the way through. I also appreciated the potilical relevance to this particular time period as it takes place in the 1960's, the heart of civil rights movement. After reading the Secret Lives of Bees I tried picking up her Mermaid book but did not find it half as good as this one. I would recommend this book to anyone female of any age. I would especially recommend reading it before the movie comes out, which looks fantastic.

Editorial Review:

Sue Monk Kidd's ravishing debut novel has stolen the hearts of reviewers and readers alike with its strong, assured voice. Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily's fierce-hearted "stand-in mother," Rosaleen, insults three of the town's fiercest racists, Lily decides they should both escape to Tiburon, South Carolina--a town that holds the secret to her mother's past. There they are taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters who introduce Lily to a mesmerizing world of bees, honey, and the Black Madonna who presides over their household. This is a remarkable story about divine female power and the transforming power of love--a story that women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come.

Have to be interested in history 4 out of 5 stars.

What keeps you going through this book are the historical details, the remarks about classic architecture. If that sound like you, then this is your book because all the rest--the characters etc.--are solid and professional. But, if you're not a history addict, this might run a bit long.

Give it a chance 4 out of 5 stars.

Read the first bit of this book outside the bed, somewhere where you can work at it a bit, because the base is there at the beginning. It's hard reading at first, but if you force yourself to get into it, the reward will be there further on.

Pillars of the Earth 1 out of 5 stars.

I never received the book. I e=mailed the sender but she never responded. I want my money back, and if this is the way Amazon operates, I won't be ordering any more books from them. Susie Johnson

Hoping for better 1 out of 5 stars.

Enough people had recommended, nay, shoved this book into my hands that I greatly anticipated a good read to take me through the holidays. But the first hundred pages found me thinking, right, this is the scene where she's going to have the baby. . .now she's going to die. . .and he's going to end up with the girl he was attracted to earlier. . .whoa, she shows up in the woods and has sex with him the day after his wife's death?
Please. I think Follett was concerned that people wouldn't like his historial fiction and so inserted sex and violence at formulaic spots. Don't get me wrong, I like sex and violence, but the stuff in this book would have enthralled me when I was a teenager. Maybe that's the right audience. I pulled the plug on this medieval soap opera at 100 pages.

Editorial Review:

The bestselling author of Eye of the Needle now takes listeners into the turbulent world of the Middle Ages with a cast of unforgettable characters drawn together by the pursuit of a single dream. 4 cassettes.

Boring and too political 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I read all of Grisham's books and usually like them, but this is way below standard.
The characters are too stereotypical, they are either perfectly good or perfectly bad; the story is predictable, and there is too much politics.

Spoiler:
All republicans are bad, all democrats are good. Only republicans take money from big business.

The principals get marginalized here 3 out of 5 stars.

I am going to have to modify my automatic "buy" reflex when I see the name Grisham, I guess. This book is about a crusading husband-wife team of tort lawyers that we're supposed to believe aren't "ambulance chasers". On the other side is a chemical business magnate whose company has been dumping toxic chemicals in a Mississippi town whose personality is a cross between Daddy Warbucks and Snidely Whiplash, with a side order of Ebenezer Scrooge (maybe it's no coincidence that the paperback came out during the Holidays). This dude rails at the idea of being sued by a bunch of "rednecks" and "trailer trash". The plaintiff (who seems almost an uncredited extra here) wins the original judgement so Scrooge McDuck appeals the verdict. But what he needs to do is get rid of a liberal state Supreme Court justice before the case gets there. So he hires a combination kingmaker/ political hit squad consultant, who finds an unsuspecting conservative (why does Grisham use that adjective as a cussword?) lawyer with no judicial experience and sets out to make a judge out of him, and runs him against the liberal incumbent, who's up for reelection. At this point Grisham insults the intelligence of the reader by practically telling us "now, folks, you're supposed to hate this guy's guts--he's one of the baaaad guys". And I can't, you know. He's really a good sort. And it isn't like we know enough about the plaintiff to empathise with her other than what she's suffered as the original victim here. Grisham keeps her offstage, referring to her only in passing, now and then. And mean tycoon makes out like a bandit. It's kind of like what the Prince says in closing of "Romeo & Juliet" when he observes that nobody wins here, everybody loses, "All are punished". Which includes the reader.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER

PULITZER PRIZE WINNER
National Book Critic's Circle Award Finalist

A New York Times Notable Book
One of the Best Books of the Year
The Boston Globe, The Christian Science Monitor, The Denver Post, The Kansas City Star, Los Angeles Times, New York, People, Rocky Mountain News, Time, The Village Voice, The Washington Post

The searing, postapocalyptic novel destined to become Cormac McCarthy's masterpiece.

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food-—and each other.

The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, "each the other's world entire," are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation.

Editorial Review:

In the first, desperate days of the Human-Covenant War, the UNSC has enacted the Cole Protocol to safeguard Earth and its Inner Colonies from discovery by a merciless alien foe. Many are called upon to rid the universe of lingering navigation data that would reveal the location of Earth. Among them is Navy Lieutenant Jacob Keyes. Thrust back into action after being sidelined, Keyes is saddled with a top secret mission by ONI. One that will take him deep behind enemy lines, to a corner of the universe where nothing is as it seems. Out beyond the Outer Colonies lies the planet Hesiod, a gas giant surrounded by a vast asteroid belt. As the Covenant continues to glass the human occupied planets near Hesiod, many of the survivors, helped by a stronghold of human Insurrectionists, are fleeing to the asteroid belt for refuge. They have transformed the tumbling satellites into a tenuous, yet ingenious, settlement known as the Rubble--and have come face-to-face with a Covenant settlement of Kig-Yar . . . yet somehow survived. News of this unlikely treaty has spread to the warring sides. Luckily for the UNSC, this uneasy alliance is in the path of the Spartan Gray Team, a three-man renegade squad whose simple task is to wreak havoc from behind enemy lines in any way they see fit. But the Prophets have also sent their best---an ambitious and ruthless Elite, whose quest for nobility and rank is matched only by his brutality . . . and who will do anything to secure his Ascendancy and walk the Path.

Perfect book for the gullible girl. 2 out of 5 stars.

OMG--I had to read this book after seeing my SIL become a vegan overnight and lose a ton of weight. If you like being made to feel like an idiot, and can tolerate profane words being tossed at you like the salads these two ladies live on--then buy this book!! It basically goes over all the common sense ways we should be eating and basically makes you feel like a second-class-citizen if you choose to eat any meat product. BE WARNED: If you will not even consider the possibility of being a vegan, than this book is NOT for you--it goes into some pretty graphic banter about how animals are treated in a slaughterhouse (any animal advocate already knows this stuff)--I thought the book to be a waste of my reading time and intellegence. I'll stick with my "common sense" diet which is minimal processed/fried/junk foods and more all natural foods--see I just saved you around $15.00!!! LOL

Editorial Review:

Not your typical boring diet book, this is a tart-tongued, no-holds-barred wake-up call to all women who want to be thin.

Editorial Review:

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Da Vinci Code comes the explosive thriller that started it all.

An ancient secret brotherhood. A devastating new weapon of destruction. An unthinkable target. When world-renowned Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to his first assignment to a Swiss research facility to analyze a mysterious symbol -- seared into the chest of a murdered physicist -- he discovers evidence of the unimaginable: the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati...the most powerful underground organization ever to walk the earth. The Illuminati has now surfaced to carry out the final phase of its legendary vendetta against its most hated enemy -- the Catholic Church.

Langdon's worst fears are confirmed on the eve of the Vatican's holy conclave, when a messenger of the Illuminati announces they have hidden an unstoppable time bomb at the very heart of Vatican City. With the countdown under way, Langdon jets to Rome to join forces with Vittoria Vetra, a beautiful and mysterious Italian scientist, to assist the Vatican in a desperate bid for survival.

Embarking on a frantic hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and the most secretive vault on earth, Langdon and Vetra follow a 400-year-old trail of ancient symbols that snakes across Rome toward the long-forgotten Illuminati lair...a clandestine location that contains the only hope for Vatican salvation.

Critics have praised the exhilarating blend of relentless adventure, scholarly intrigue, and cutting wit found in Brown's remarkable thrillers featuring Robert Langdon. An explosive international suspense, Angels & Demons marks this hero's first adventure as it careens from enlightening epiphanies to dark truths as the battle between science and religion turns to war.
