Not so exciting as promised ! 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 6 people found this review helpful.

When I saw the books, I got really enthousiastic. The forsight for listening to mp3 files on my iPod while studying on the road appealed to me. But when I registered online I noticed there are no mp3 downloads anywhere on the Wiley website. That said, there are soundfiles pronouncing medical terms but no audio lectures as promised in the book!

Wiley offers a student support website where you can view visual anatomy or other subjects from the book. You can search for chapters only to find that if you for instance go to chapter 21 and click on the listed mp3 items you are redirected to alphabetical lists of available files for all chapters and have to search for the requested subject by yourself.

For the written contents of the book I can only say it's fine.

Editorial Review:

The new edition of Principles of Anatomy and Physiology maintains the superb balance between structure and function. It continues to emphasize the correlations between normal physiology and pathophysiology, normal anatomy and pathology, and homeostasis and homeostatic imbalances. The acclaimed illustration program is also even better along with the redevelopment of many of the figures depicting the toughest topics to grasp.

Excellent 5 out of 5 stars.

Excellent book on Neuro for the healthcare professional that is not a neuro specialist. I am an ER PA and find this a useful refernce in everything from the neuro exam and it's etiology. This book has a similar format to the Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment.

good general reference 4 out of 5 stars.

As a PA this is a great general reference for neurological system.

Great book for neurology clerkship 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is the required text for my medical school's neurology clerkship. At first, I was intimidated by using a 400 page book for a four week rotation followed by the shelf but this book is concise and easy to read for a 3rd year medical student who had a half decent neuropathophysiology class during second year. Other more concise review books such as blueprints or NMS are almost as long and do not provide the depth necessary (in my opinion) to tackle one of the toughest shelf exams. There is a good review of imaging and great illustrations of anatomy which really can really expediate review before the test. This book paired with pre-test neurology was all I needed for this rotation/shelf.

Editorial Review:

Recognized for a practice-oriented approach to neurology based on the patient’s presenting symptoms or signs. This uniquely readable and concise book provides a strong foundation in basic neuroscience linking it to current approaches in the diagnosis and treatment of neurologic disorders. Features new relevant web sites and a glossary as well as extensive use of charts and tables.

LIfe -Span Development 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The book is easy to read. The author does not assume that you have prior knowledge about development stages and theories that accompany the stages. The author also adds real life examples of how these stages may look in life in many different cultures. The chapters build on each other. The author does a great job of reveiwing key concepts from previous chapters as they relate to the current chapter.

The CD had been helpful in taking the reading materials to the next level of understanding.

Editorial Review:

Completely revised and featuring a new design, Life-Span Development 8th edition is the most accurate and up to date text available. Applauded by adopters as eloquently written and intelligently presented, this text bears John Santrock’s trademark balance of accurate, current content for faculty and effective pedagogy for students. Included in this new edition are the most cutting edge research available and thoroughly integrated coverage of culture, ethnicity and gender. For students, Santrock’s student-celebrated pedagogical system has been enhanced to better help students see how the course material fits together. The new edition features extended coverage of aging material, along with thoroughly updated references and enhanced pedagogical features.

Very helpful 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

It's a really useful book, which is neither too complicated or too easy. I'm studying at university to become a paramedic, and it has been a very helpful tool in the specific anatomy and physiology topics they expect us to understand. The pages held colour pencil just fine - I remember reading a review before buying this which said the pages were too "waxy" and didn't hold pencil well. This isn't true. The pages are fine for applying pencil.

The only thing I must say in a sort of negative light is that you must have another anatomy and physiology book as well as this one - this is more of a quiz book on what you know as opposed to something to teach it to you.

It could be used on its own, as the answers are avaliable at the back of the book, but having a seperate textbook would probably be preferable. It is easier to learn things in context rather than simple question and answer form, in my opinion.

All in all, I would highly reccommend this book to anyone who is a more visual learner and studies anatomy and physiology.

Editorial Review:

Anatomy and Physiology Coloring Workbook is an excellent tool for anyone who is learning basic human anatomy and physiology. The author's straightforward approach promotes and reinforces learning on many levels through a wide variety of visual and written exercises. The Human Body: An Orientation, Basic Chemistry, Cells and Tissues, Skin and Body Membranes, The Skeletal System, The Muscular System, The Nervous System, Special Senses, The Endocrine System, Blood, The Cardiovascular System, The Lymphatic System and Body Defenses, The Respiratory System, The Digestive System and Body Metabolism, The Urinary System, The Reproductive System. For all readers interested in learning the basics of anatomy and physiology.

A good summer read. 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

First, let me explain myself a little so that you may know where I am coming from. I am a pre-med biology major who will be a senior for the fall '06 term. I have never had any A&P class whatsoever because the biology department's requirements...well, that is another story. I bought this book because it is not too detailed to lose sight of the big picture but just detailed enough to explain pretty much all the A&P that will be on the MCAT. Of course, this book has tons of stuff that is NOT tested on the MCAT, but I have the examkracker books and I use this book for the (very) few times examkrackers does a poor job explaining things. It's also always good to read the same thing from various sources because the information is much easier to retain that way. I like the pathology that is intermixed throughout the entire book, and the outline pages at the end of each chapter are nice as well as the "case studies" that you are presented with. All in all, this book would be 5 stars for its high yield, one semester A&P (and some pathology) content, but I had to take off one star for the abysmal section on nutrition and metabolism. Glycolysis, CAC, and ETC are barely mentioned. The one or two figures are childish (the others are really good). I may be biased though because I just got out of biochemistry and metabolism was beaten into my brain. Still, I can recommend this to those who want a cheap, basic A&P book to supplement their MCAT Biology studying. The pathology stuff is just bonus and fun to read as sort of a segway into my senior year and my pathology class.

Editorial Review:

This updated third edition includes outstanding coverage of basic anatomy and physiology, plus the mechanisms of disease and pathologic conditions associated with each body system. Two unifying themes are integrated in this comprehensive text: the complementary nature of structure and function, and homeostasis. Homeostasis is used to show how "normal" structure and function are maintained, whereas failures of homeostasis are shown as basic mechanisms of disease. The reader is drawn into the subject by a clear, straightforward style, superior illustrations, and student-friendly features. Included FREE with the softcover text is Body Spectrum: Mosby's Electronic Anatomy Coloring Book CD-ROM.

Editorial Review:

Why have we humans always longed to connect with something larger than ourselves? Even today in our technologically advanced age, more than seventy percent of Americans claim to believe in God. Why, in short, won’t God go away? In this groundbreaking new book, researchers Andrew Newberg and Eugene d’Aquili offer an explanation that is at once profoundly simple and scientifically precise: The religious impulse is rooted in the biology of the brain.

In Why God Won’t Go Away, Newberg and d’Aquili document their pioneering explorations in the field of neurotheology, an emerging discipline dedicated to understanding the complex relationship between spirituality and the brain. Blending cutting-edge science with illuminating insights into the nature of consciousness and spirituality, they bridge faith and reason, mysticism and empirical data. The neurological basis of how the brain identifies the “real” is nothing short of miraculous. This fascinating, eye-opening book dares to explore both the miracle and the biology of our enduring relationship with God.

Awesome review book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Perfect condition, as described, provides excellent review, pertinent case studies and relevant clinical examples. Great!

Horrible as a PA text 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Had this "review" book and "USMLE" prep book as predominant resource for PA school. Could not understand text as it was over my (and most if not all of my classmates) head. I guess it would be acceptable for the target audience, but first semester PA students are not the target audience by any stretch. Should not seem to be a coincidence that the instructor that required the book was one of the authors. I would presume this to be a financial conflict of interest.. oh well.

Editorial Review:

High-Yield(TM) Gross Anatomy, Third Edition provides the essential information needed for USMLE Step 1 review and course study. It is written from a clinical perspective to prepare students for clinical vignettes on the USMLE and thoroughly illustrated with drawings and radiographic images. This edition includes more radiology and cross-sectional anatomy and features extensive clinical applications, many enhanced with illustrations and photos. New chapters include the lymphatic system, the autonomic nervous system, and the eye.
