Editorial Review:

A companion to the man-made landscape that reveals how our industrial environment can be as dazzling as the natural world.

Replete with the author's striking photographs, Infrastructure is a unique and spectacular guide, exploring all the major "ecosystems" of our modern industrial world, revealing what the structures are and why they're there, and uncovering beauty in unexpected places—awakening and fulfilling a curiosity you didn't know you had. Covering agriculture, resources, energy, communication, transportation, manufacturing, and waste, this is the "Book of Everything" for the industrial landscape.

The objects that fill our everyday environment are streetlights, railroad tracks, antenna towers, highway overpasses, power lines, satellite dishes, and thousands of other manufactured items, many of them so familiar we hardly notice them. Larger and more exotic facilities have transformed vast tracts of the landscape: coal mines, nuclear power plants, grain elevators, oil refineries, and steel mills, to name a few. Infrastructure is a compelling and clear guide for those who want to explore and understand this mysterious world we've made for ourselves. 500 color illustrations.

Editorial Review:

Now in paperback, the highly acclaimed exploration of sushi’s surprising history, global business, and international allure

One generation ago, sushi’s narrow reach ensured that sports fishermen who caught tuna in most of parts of the world sold the meat for pennies as cat food. Today, the fatty cuts of tuna known as toro are among the planet’s most coveted luxury foods, worth hundreds of dollars a pound and capable of losing value more quickly than any other product on earth. So how did one of the world’s most popular foods go from being practically unknown in the United States to being served in towns all across America, and in such a short span of time?

A riveting combination of culinary biography, behind-the- scenes restaurant detail, and a unique exploration of globalization’s dynamics, the book traces sushi’s journey from Japanese street snack to global delicacy. After traversing the pages of The Sushi Economy, you’ll never see the food on your plate—or the world around you—quite the same way again.

Well researched yet very readable 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Most of time while reading this book I was thinking, "Why didn't I know that?" I would recommend this well written and easy-to-understand book to everyone who wants to gain a broad understanding about what is going on with energy and oil. The target market appears to be the intelligent layman with helpful hints on how your investing strategy might benefit. Suddenly, when watching the talking heads you will spot the horrible, over-simplified, childish thinking that we are bombarded with every day, especially from the silver bullet types. It is well researched and referenced, and I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

Profit from the Peak contains the information you need to successfully navigate the end of our oil-based economy. It takes a hard look at the future of oil and gas, examines how you can effectively invest in these resources, and profit from energy alternatives that are poised to power the years ahead. Along the way, this book also explores the potential, and possible limitations, of each major energy source, while carefully cover the investing angles of each one.

Editorial Review:

Most organisations consist of multiple business and support units, each populated by highly trained, experienced executives. But often the efforts of individual units are not coordinated, resulting in conflicts, lost opportunities, and diminished performance Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton argue that the responsibility for this critical alignment lies with corporate headquarters. In this book, the authors apply their revolutionary Balanced Scorecard management system to corporate-level strategy, revealing how highly successful enterprises achieve powerful synergies by explicitly defining corporate headquarters' role in setting, coordinating, and overseeing organisational strategy. Based on extensive field research in organisations worldwide, "Alignment" shows how companies can build an enterprise-level Strategy Map and Balanced Scorecard that clearly articulate the "enterprise value proposition": how the enterprise creates value above that achieved by individual business units operating alone. The book provides case studies, actionable frameworks, and sample scorecards that show how to align business and support units, boards of directors, and external partners with the corporate strategy and create a governance process that will ensure that alignment is sustained. The next breakthrough in strategy execution from the field's premier thinkers, "Alignment" shows how today's companies can unlock unrealised value from enterprise synergies.

Smart, Smart Guy 5 out of 5 stars.

Wow. After 25 years in the quality business I am still not ready to claim I completely 'understand' Deming. He was of course, a brilliant statistician and business optimization theorist . . . but he was also a physicist. His famous quip, "Water turns to ice . . . same molecules. . . what happened?" I finally realize, was his way of speaking to the state change that occurs in a phase transition, the same phenonmeon that occurs when organizations cross over to quality. Deming was the real Superman.

Editorial Review:

". . . competition, we see now, is destructive. It would be better if everyone would work together as a system, with the aim for everybody to win. What we need is cooperation and transformation to a new style of management."

In this book W. Edwards Deming details the system of transformation that underlies the 14 Points for Management presented in Out of the Crisis. The system of profound knowledge, as it is called, consists of four parts: appreciation for a system, knowledge about variation, theory of knowledge, and psychology. Describing prevailing management style as a prison, Deming shows how a style based on cooperation rather than competition can help people develop joy in work and learning at the same time that it brings about long-term success in the market. Indicative of Deming's philosophy is his advice to abolish performance reviews on the job and grades in school.

Read with Caution! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Caution: This book resulted in a several pound gain caused by a Twin Bings, a few Idaho Spuds, and a box of Old Faithfuls (wonderful!). All in all, a very expensive and hazardous book!

Editorial Review:

A self-professed candyfreak, Steve Almond set out in search of a much-loved candy from his childhood and found himself on a tour of the small candy companies that are persevering in a marketplace where big corporations dominate.

From the Twin Bing to the Idaho Spud, the Valomilk to the Abba-Zaba, and discontinued bars such as the Caravelle, Marathon, and Choco-Lite, Almond uncovers a trove of singular candy bars made by unsung heroes working in old-fashioned factories to produce something they love. And in true candyfreak fashion, Almond lusciously describes the rich tastes that he has loved since childhood and continues to crave today. Steve Almond has written a comic but ultimately bittersweet story of how he grew up on candy-and how, for better and worse, the candy industry has grown up, too.

Candyfreak is the delicious story of one man's lifelong obsession with candy and his quest to discover its origins in America.

Detailed knowledge volume 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Rather than giving a bunch of formulas to use in Excel, this book actually tries to impart you some knowledge of real world.
While the knowledge maybe old hat for experienced stock analysts, it is NOT for new comers to the field.
And for the Excel script MBAs who try to reduce everything to an equation, sorry dudes.
This book attempts to make u first understand the purpose, goal, and results you would get in a analysis, and then goes about teaching you that analysis.

Editorial Review:

A clear and well informed guide for investors, analysts, and students, this newly revised 4th edition answers many questions and challenges in analysing companies and results including: How can anyone tell how well a company is managed and performing? What ratios and indicators are truly useful in assessing performance? How does one decode the real story in a company's reported results? How can companies operating n different sectors—or different countries—be compared? How can danger signs on the corporate horizon be spotted?

  • Minutes of Special Directors' Meeting
  • Waiver of Notice of Meeting
  • Approval of Corporate Minutes By Directors of Shareholders
  • Cover Letter for Approval of Minutes of Paper Meeting
  • Written Consent to Action Without Meeting

The Corporate Records Handbook also gives you more than 75 additional resolutions -- both as tear-outs and on CD-ROM -- to insert into your minutes. So take a few minutes and read this book -- your corporation deserves it!
