Good Read 4 out of 5 stars.

Jane Leighton is a modern day woman, escaping a stalking ex-boyfriend by vacationing in Bath. She ends up staying at a quaint Bed and Breakfast at Chadwick Manor, a place formerly owned by a gentleman who disappeared tragically during Regency period England.

Ramsey Chadwick is a Regency gentleman, two-weeks away from his marriage to the most beautiful woman in Bath. However, he starts noticing two things: (1) his future wife is flirting quite freely with his best friend and (2) there is a ghost of a woman in his bedchamber. Jane and Ramsey first meet as ghosts to one another. They both try to investigate who each other is, however Ramsey has no success, as Jane's time does not exist. Jane, on the other hand, discovers more about Ramsey and starts to long to help him find his way.

One night, during Ramsey's ball for his fiance, Jane is brought into Regency England by a touch from Ramsey. Once there, Jane believes that she is to help Ramsey discovered who caused him to disappear and to help prevent it from happening again. At the same time, Jane tries to assist Ramsey in dealing with his fiance. There is a twist, though. Jane is only in Ramsey's time at night. Every dawn, she returns to her world.

TOUCHED BY TIME is a good, solid afternoon read. It is rather shorter than my normal books, but I was intriqued by the story. Ramsey and Jane do not fall "head over heels in love" immediately. They gradually learned to like and respect each other. Will they be able to save Ramsey? Will Ramsey marry his fiance? Is there a way for Jane to remain in Ramsey's time, if they do fall fully in love? Read to find out.

Editorial Review:

Ramsay Chadwick has grown accustomed to the blurred ghosts that occasionally inhabit his bed. They're a minor inconvenience compared to the fact that his beautiful fiancee is flirting with another man. But the latest "ghost" to visit his room, Miss Jane Leighton, is nothing like the others. For one thing, a single touch turns her into a flesh and blood woman - revealing substantially more flesh than would be deemed proper by the ladies of Bath. For another, this lovely, spirited creature stays in his world from dusk till dawn...and suddenly, Ramsay finds himself waiting eagerly for evening...Jane treated herself to a vacation in Bath to escape from relationships - not to play matchmaker for the most intriguing, handsome man she's ever seen. And did she happen to mention that he lived two hundred years ago, and they can only meet at night? It's a decided complication...but falling in love is proving all too easy - and letting him go will be impossible...

What a Pleasure! 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Normally, I consider romance novels a guilty pleasure. However, this particular romance has all of the pleasure without any of the guilt. How refreshing! The story begins with Catriona being willed to neighbor Sir Michael Stewart after the distant cousin she has been taking care of passses away. Sir Michael Stewart is a widower and confirmed bachelor with two grown daughters. He eschews fashionable society and instead enjoys his farm and solitude until Catriona's arrival disturbs his peace. Catriona establishes herself as his housekeeper and is intent on keeping her promise to her late cousin. She won't leave Sir Michael's until she has made his house respectable again and helped him find a wife. To Tempt a Gentleman is filled with fast-paced, witty, acerbic dialogue. About half-way into the book the plot really begins to thicken as we discover Catriona's history and full identity. The plot may be a little bit too contrived at times, but the dialogue more than makes up for the occasional choppiness in the plot. Also, I appreciate that the author manages to convey sexual tension and chemistry without compromising moral integrity. This novel is simply a pleasure.

Editorial Review:

When an elderly relative passes away, the last thing Sir Michael Stewart expects is a bequest - especially a lushly attractive young woman determined to move into his home! The old lady's former companion and housekeeper, Catriona Grant has promised to take care of him now, but Michael doesn't need her help: The stubborn lass has far too many ideas about letting the sunshine in and chasing the doldrums out. Widowed and content at his remote and admittedly rather bleak estate on Scotland's coast, Michael has only one solution - finding Miss Grant a husband of her own. But letting her go isn't as easy as he imagined - especially when he discovers that what passed for contentment before has been shattered by fantasies of the sweet tilt of Catriona's lips, and the soft curves of her body...

a satisfying read 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

While "A Viscount For Christmas" is a little more somber and angst-ridden than is the usual Zebra Christmas fare, it still proved to be an interesting and compelling read -- even if things became a tad too complicated towards the end.

Miss Olivia Faraday is near the end of her tether: her father's mental health seems to be slipping faster than ever, they practically have no money left, and now her widowed elder sister, Susanna, and her two sons are about to turn up. How is Olivia to stretch the budget in order to house and feed three extra people, especially when Christmas is around the corner? But the crowning worry comes in the shape of Lord Jack Harrow. Olivia's father used to be the consulting agriculturist for Lord Harrow's now deceased uncle. Now Lord Harrow has inherited Littleton Park, and Olivia cannot help but fear that Lord Harrow will retire her father. What would the practically penniless Faradays do then? And where would they go? The very thought that the fate of her family lies in the hands of a care-for-naught fribble like Lord Harrow is enough to make even the most optimistic of women feel bilious! But Olivia has a plan. She will make the useless man see that her father still has a lot to contribute and that he is on the road to recovery. So what if it will mean that she will have to spend an inordinate amount of time with the man? But when Lord Harrow proves to be kind, generous, intelligent and self-effacing, Olivia cannot but fear that in her zeal to prove her father's worth, she has left herself open to a different kind of threat...

What makes this novel good is the manner in which the authour allows us to see the changes in Lord Harrow -- from the careless fellow in the first few chapters, to the more responsible landlord at the end of the book. Ms Blair also does a wonderful job of depicting all the worries and angst that Olivia feels and experiences. It is true that Olivia is a bit sour and harsh for most of the book, but factor in all that she's coping with and going through, and I do think that most readers will forgive her her less than sunny nature. The subplot involving Olivia's sister, Susanna, was rather interesting too. And if I had one complaint, it was that things got a little too complicated towards the end of the book, with Lord Harrow and Olivia talking at cross purposes and the whole missing money bit. On the whole though, "A Viscount for Christmas" was a thoroughly satisfying and enjoyable read, with believable and engaging characters facing real problems. Definitely recommended reading.

A very enjoyable Regency 4 out of 5 stars.

James Braedon arrives home to find his house on fire. When his servants inform him that his father is to blame, James is not surprised. His father has been disturbed since the death of his second wife, and an apoplexy further incapacitated him. James's relationship with his father has always been troubled, but now matters deteriorate even further. And to make matters worse, James's housekeeper quits, leaving no one to supervise the salvage of the house.

Enter Marguerite Voisson, a French lady whose own house was burned by an angry mob during the Revolution when she was a child. She takes on the housekeeper's job and soon puts his house in order and brings an unexpected joy into his life.

The topic of mental illness in the Regency period adds an interesting dimension to this story. Marguerite realizes that the father's stroke has caused him to mix up common words, which aggravates him further, and James agrees that the latest medical research confirms this diagnosis.

But most compelling is the way the hero and heroine overcome their troubled pasts and open themselves to love. This is a fine story of a wounded hero and the unusual lady who helps him heal.

This is the sequel to His Heart's Delight -- brother Morgan Braedon's story -- though it's not necessary to read the first to enjoy this one. As an avid Regency reader, I'm always pleased to discover a promising new author. I look forward to the next installment.

Editorial Review:

James Braedon's brusque manner hides a passionate soul who is searching for the perfect lover. A spirited young woman vows to find that person for him, but she has already stolen his heart herself.

This one really bothered me 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I was trying to figure out why I didn't like this book, and other reviewers rated it highly. You'd think that if a book is good, everyone would enjoy it, and if a book was bad, no-one would like it. I think what it boils down to here, is that although this book was very well written, I found the characters, especially the "hero" to be extremely unsympathetic. When you can't like the hero at all - well, there goes the romance, I guess.

This was a well-written and emotionally written, book It seems that "The Captain's Mermaid" is a continuation to a series, but I did not read any previous books, and I was not at all lost - it seems that this book can stand alone.

Lavinia was brought up in Jamaica. Now home in England, she is miserable. England is nothing the way she thought it would be. Oh, it might be for others - but she is living with her brother - and a more selfish person has never walked the planet. He doesn't see the *need* to present her to society - what, and lose a perfectly good children's governess??!! Lavinia takes stock of her life, realizes that at twenty-six not much is going to change, but she tries, stoicly, to make the best of things. Contrary to convention she likes to walk around barefoot - who's to notice, or, at least, who's to care, anyway? And when she sees a lake that is excellent for swimming, Lavinia realizes that, even though the weather is not quite like Jamaica, swimming here is still a pleasure to get her through her tedious days - and besides, she really does like her niece and nephew, so life is not all bad.

When she spies a young boy up in a tree watching her swim, Lavinia is livid. Who's child is this that they allow him to do these kind of things? When she discovers that he belongs to her next-door-neighbor, the captain who is finally home from the sea, Lavinia marches over to give the good captain a piece of her mind. Turns out that this little boy has no parents, and the Captain is his guardian, a fact which awakens Lavinia's tender feelings, and she is determined to teach the Captain the right way to bring up a child...

The first few chapters here were quite good, even though a bit slow paced, but the interactions between the Captain and Lavinia really made me smile! But it was when the story turned to romance (and the Captain's and Lavinia's courtship and marriage) that I found myself becoming more and more unhappy with this story. I truly didn't like the Captain, which made it hard for me to root for their happily-ever-after. I know that this is a popular story-line - strong, tortured, and unhappy hero is tamed by the love of the spirited, and strong heroine, but first of all, I don't like this kind of romance much. Secondly, I've seen it done much better. Third, I thought that a better name for this would be strong, tortured, *abusive* hero, and woman who's just willing (and strong enough?) to allow herself to be hurt (because she loves him?).

I didn't find that there was enough interactions between the h/h to make up for the character defects of the hero. Sometimes, a skillful author can make you like this kind of hero anyway, by showing the reader his tender side (sometimes), or by having them make up, or the hero eating humble pie - but here everything was so rushed - they have one wedding night before the Captain rushes off to sea, and then they don't see each other for eight months, then he comes home, and the book ends there - there simply wasn't enough time, IMHO, for any kind of real relationship to develop, so I wasn't convinced that they had, indeed, found their happily-ever-after.

But with all that, this would have been a comfortable three star read for me, perhaps, if not for the way the captain's whip keeps popping up. I wasn't extremely happy when, at the start of the book, the captain is seen to whip his charge (three lashes?), but I overlooked it, perhaps that's the way things were done then? And he is a sea captain, and the boy seemed to like him. (I don't believe that part, by the way, it's just not realistic - children may *obey* those kinds of parents, out of fear, but that they have a loving and open relationship? I don't think so.) But when we have a scene towards the end of the book - where the our heroine Lavinia, asks the Captain - will you whip me? And he takes a full minute to answer before he says - no. Okay, I know that he didn't actually whip her - but the fact that she's afraid of him, and has to ask that question, and he leaves her hanging for a while - sorry, this just did not go down very well for this reader. I don't like romance stories where the heroine is afraid of the hero - and afraid that he might *whip* her! Just ruins the mood, for me.

So, it's your toss. If you like a story with a somber, emotional tone, and don't mind those elements that turned me off, then you will probably enjoy this book more than I did. I give it two stars because it *is* well-written, and it does start off very well, and it *was* a good book, in its own way. But not for me.

a pleasant 3 1/2 star read 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Laura Paquet's latest Regency-era offering is a nice, no surprises read about two people who are seemingly opposite in nature, and who yet turn out to be soul mates. It is a pleasant, well written novel, the charm of which lies in how both the hero and heroine learn to like and appreciate each other, and how, the heroine especially, changes (slightly) for the better.

Lady Cassandra Blythe is feeling a bit restless. Feted as an "incomparable" for the past few years, mixing with the same people (and avoiding the same people), and having come no nearer to finding her ideal mate, has left her feeling a bit jaded. The truth, though, is that Lady Cassandra has a distinct partiality for Mr. Peregrine Russell, except that while the gentleman enjoys her company and seeks her out constantly, he seems in no hurry to be married! So perhaps the unlooked for visit by her brother-in-law by marriage, Lord Benjamin Rowland, the Earl of Winchfield, should provide some amusement? Benjamin has been estranged from his sister, Elinor (and Cassandra's sister-in-law), ever since Elinor eloped in order to marry Richard Blythe. And Benjamin has been slow to bend the breach between them. Now, however, Benjamin has decided to marry, and hopes that Elinor will help him find a meek, biddable wife. For Benjamin is of a scholarly bent, and would like to spend all his time at his estate in the country, studying, rather squiring some demanding beauty about town. Elinor is aghast! She wants her brother to marry for love; but Cassandra, who despises the earl for all the pain he has cost Elinor privately believes that a meek, biddable wife is exactly what he deserves and is determined to help him find such a mate. That is until she begins to get to know Benjamin and realises that there is more to the man that meets the eye. Slowly she begins to rethink some of the things she has long taken for granted, and even her feelings for the earl. Could the bookish, quiet and stiff Benjamin embody all those qualities in a husband she has been looking for? But does he think the same way of her? And what of the other ladies she has been throwing at Benjamin ever since he arrived in town?

If you're looking for a nice, uncomplicated read with no surprises, then you will enjoy "The Incomparable Cassandra." The book was well written, nicely paced and unfolded at a smooth and brisk pace. Focusing both on how Cassandra's character changes a little and the developing attraction between the two principals, "The Incomparable Cassandra" was an enjoyable read mostly because both Cassandra and Benjamin were easy to like. For while Cassandra is a bit superficial, she's not all that bad and is very good and loyal to her friends. So that, when through Benjamin's influence, she learns a little kindness, one feels good about the potential match between the two. Benjamin, apparently has already had his epiphany before the book starts, and fully cognizant about the wrong he has done his sister and her husband, so that we don't really see his character change all that much -- he's a nice but reserved gentleman when we first meet him, and he's still a nice but reserved gentleman at the book's close. So that while "The Incomparable Cassandra" is not a very complex book, it still makes for a nice 3 1/2 star read.

enjoyable reading but not up to the author's high standards 4 out of 5 stars.

A young woman is placed into a lord's household as his temporary ward. Her tendency to pick up stray people and animals totally upsets his life and he feels drawn to her compassionate ways. Again Cindy Holbrook comes up with a nice set of characters and lots of jokes, but somehow this book didn't draw me in like most of her previous books (My all time favourite book - "A Daring Deception" by the same author - makes me both cry and laugh aloud everytime I read it).

Her best book yet! 5 out of 5 stars.

Just when I think Ms. Holbrook's writing can't be more amusing and/or touching, she comes through with another book, better than the one before. This is a delightful romance that doesn't let the reader lose sight of the fact that it's also a Christmas story.

Of couse Alexander has to help out the schemes that she gets herself into. You will keep reading just to see what Josephine gets into next. This book is a must read.

Love is a Gamble 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book, a very "neat" story. Josie, the eldest daughter of a very spendthrift family, refuses to marry her arranged fiancee because her family is counting on him to get them out of financial troubles. In her efforts to prevent her family from draining Alex's pockets, (ranging from gambling to becoming a mistress) she gets herself and everyone else into mischief, from which Alex has to rescue them all! A very pleasing story.

Another fun book by Cindy Holbrook! 5 out of 5 stars.

I found myself laughing out loud on an airplne to Hawaii with people staring at me. Poor Josephine got herself into so many hilarious situations that only Ms. Holbrook could think-up. What a mess she was! I'm not normally a Romance/Historical reader, but I just love Cindy's books. You should check out some of her others, too. I particularly enjoyed Lord Sayer's Ghost.
