Excellent learning tool 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book for my CIS 120 class (that is intro to micro-computers). This book is an excellent teaching guide to learn everything there is to know about Microsoft Office software. It is very detailed and it gives you examples and you will learn hands on. This is an excellent book for anyone that need to learn or even need a refresher course. This book have step-by-step instructions. I highly recommend this book.

I had to buy it for class but it wouldn't be the first book I'd buy for personal use.

This book did not include all the software and tools I needed for class, so I had to buy another book at the college. Thus, I paid for the book twice. This does not make me very happy. I just got everything done for the return and I appreciate how user-friendly your steps are.

Not a bad book but it takes some work to get through the dry parts. I think that the book is decent.

Excellent Book from Beginners to Advanced Office 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I'm an instructor for computer school where we teach Office at various levels - and even the most advanced students of mine really like this book.

The examples are great and straight to the point, also - if you do not know how to do something - you can actually find under the procedures quickly and easily.

On the downside - it does not have many expert topics as VBA (and not much for Macros) - but the topics it does cover are great. Even if you have used office for years - in this book you will find new COOL things you never knew about.

Covers Word, Excel, Access and Powerpoint --> Tons of practice!!

DDC Learning Materials Continue The Tradition Of Excellence 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

DDC Learning Microsoft Office XP is an excelent book for use by individuals who wish to learn without attending formal class sessions or enrolling in an online course. Of course, the book is also excellent for students enrolled in Secondary Education classes or Adult Education classes. The books published by DDC provide guides to use either menu commands or keyboard commands. Electronic files are provided for all lessons to limit the amount of keyboarding required so that the student concentrates on learning. I use the materials for my personal learning when I wish to quickly get up and running with a software application.

For teachers, solution files and other materials are available. Over a period of several years, I observed both students and teachers successfully using DDC materails. I have yet to find a teacher who used these materials that did not reorder DDC material for subsequent classes. While there are a variety of good materials available, my personal opinion is that DDC materials continue to be one of the best available both for individual use and classroom use.

A review by a statistics class (XP edition) 4 out of 5 stars.
30 of 30 people found this review helpful.

I use this book as the main text book for the first half of a class in statistics and research methods for students from a wide variety of social science and humanities backgrounds, with little formal statistics or mathematics background.

I surveyed my students with 5 questions about the book, with responses on a Likert scale (1=strongly disagree, 3=neutral, 5=strongly aggree. 17 students responded, which is a small enough sample size to caution applicability of results. The mean value of each response appears after the questions I asked.

1.The book was, overall, helpful in explaining statistical concepts. (Mean=2.73). Students would have appreciated more explanation and examples.
2.The book helped me to analyze data. (Mean=2.3)
3.The StatPlus AddIn was, overall, helpful in analyzing data. (Mean=3.76)
4.The StatPlus AddIn worked well on my computer. (Mean=3.7)
5.Overall, I would recommend this book to next year's class. (Mean=3.05)

Thus, overall, weighting each question equally, my students gave the book 3.12 stars.

As a professor, I give the book 4 stars. The organization of the book chapters fit well in an overview course, with one chapter assinged per week. The StatPlus AddIn is worth the cost of the book itself, as it expands the statistical capabilities of Excel without students needing to purchase additional software. There are a wide range of problems and example data sets which come with the book, applicable to a wide range of disciplines. A significant number of students had computer difficulties installing and running the StatPlus AddIn, so I would recommend to the company a support web page with FAQs, at the least.

Students with little preparation in mathematics or statiscs who need a good step-by-step guide to data analysis will find this book helpful, especially if they do the excercises at the end of the chapters. (The publishers should make the answers available to everyone, not just us instructors -- for those working on their own who want to check their work). However, students with some preparation in statistics or mathematics may be better served with a more advanced text.

Editorial Review:

This popular best-selling book shows students and professionals how to do data analysis with Microsoft Excel. DATA ANALYSIS WITH MICROSOFT EXCEL teaches students and professionals the fundamental concepts of statistics and how to use Microsoft Excel to solve the kind of data-intensive problems that arise in business and elsewhere. Even students with no previous experience using spreadsheets will find that this text's step-by-step approach, extensive tutorials, and examples make it easy to learn how to use Excel for analyzing data. A CD-ROM is included with every new text that contains the StatPlus add-ins for Microsoft Excel and data sets for exercises.

Great Book, For Those Who Are New To Computers! 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 19 people found this review helpful.

This is a great textbook! This book is very easy to follow, as it has provided step-by-step instructions on how to do each of the chapters in this book and of Office XP. It also has a chapter review section with more exercises.

Pretty good info, Doesn't instill as much "critical thinking" 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I work in a world where critical thinking skills are a must, so for things like this you should have more exercises that are "at your own pace" and "figure it out yourself" type of deal.

This book is also horribly lacking the ability to check how close your Office document that YOU made to their example. It's no use if you don't know how well you did. Things can look similar, but there are probably errors here-or-there.

It's fairly comprehensive, but like I said, since you don't really use your brain much, you don't really gain the ability to do these type of things on your own.

Editorial Review:

Part of the highly successful Shelly Cashman Series, this text offers a clear screen-by-screen, step-by-step approach to learning the fundamentals of Microsoft Office XP.

Outdated OLD material, stay away!!! 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book based on the other customer reviews, unfortunately I was very disappointed. This book was written/published before SP2 came out, which makes a BIG difference in the material covered on the exam. Dont get me wrong, this does have plenty of good material, but this is NOT a good sole study guide, this is more of a backup. My advice, save the $40 and go with a different set of books.
