Quackery 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 25 people found this review helpful.

I consider it immoral to promote unproven treatments instead of the stuff that has been proven to work in hundreds of thousands of patients.
People die as a result of trying alternatives and delaying treatment. I've seen it. It's okay to use alternative therapies and diet in addition to, but not instead of the FDA approved treatments. There have been many studies, including sponsored by National Cancer Institute, which showed only small and inconsistent benefit of dietary changes when treating cancer.
And, actually, many treatments recommended by oncologists these days are not chemotherapy, but biological or targeted to your type of tumor.
Cancer doc.

More Than Expected 5 out of 5 stars.

This book should be in every household and readily accessible.
I found more information than I ever expected and all within reach if I choose to follow. I am surprised this hasn't been blacklisted.

For those whose appetites have been turned off by illness, Rebecca's ONE BITE AT A TIME is an instant turn-on to good, nourishing food. Dishes such as Poached Coconut-Ginger Salmon, Spinach Orzo with Pine Nuts and Feta, Taxicab Yellow Tomato soup and Magic Mineral Broth reinvigorate the appetite with ingredients that help bolster the body's immune system.

To accompany the recipes, Rebecca offers down-to-earth information and helpful advice for those dealing with the culinary ups and downs often experienced during treatment. Rebecca's caring, humor-filled recipe notes will warm your heart and remind you that, along with a good meal, laughter can truly be the best medicine. Throughout the book's pages, Rebecca's clients attest to this fact, as they share anecdotes of the joyous impact these recipes have had on their lives.

This book concerns me 2 out of 5 stars.
16 of 20 people found this review helpful.

This book has numerous tasty recipes that everyone in the family can enjoy. The book is also nicely organized with a chart that summarizes which recipes are particularly good for specific side efects of cancer & cancer treatment.

On the negative side, and this was a big negative for me personally, if you are trying to follow an anti-cancer diet that avoids sugar, processed flours, and other ingredients that many believe are at least questionable if not outright harmful for a cancer patient, then this is not the book for you. Many of these recipes include the use of table sugar & other processed sweeteners, processed grains, and higher amounts of animal protein than are usually recommended for cancer patients (or for anyone, for that matter). The author even recommends adding extra sugar to some recipes to make them taste better.

I understand firsthand that some, perhaps many, cancer patients' palates change during treatment. When combined with nausea or other side effects, it can be difficult to find any foods that are appealing. At times, simply getting the patient to eat *anything* in order to get some calories must take precedence over ensuring that those meals are truly healthy. If this is the situation you are facing, then this book might provide you with some tasty options. But I believe it is irresponsible for the author to provide recipes and food suggestions that at best are not truly healthy and at worst could feed a patient's cancer.

Instead I recommend "Nature's Cancer-Fighting Foods" as a source of sound nutritional advice (for anyone, not just cancer patients) and simple, health-promoting, and appealing recipes.

Editorial Review:

Designed for cancer patients and their family, these easy-to-follow recipes focus on foods best tolerated and those to ease the symptoms during treatment. With an oncologist's chapter introduction, doctor's notes, menu planning, tips, nutritional analysis, diabetic exchanges, the book serves as a guide for nutrition before, during, and after cancer treatment.

I was expecting the book to talk about more foods than it did, but still overall some good information. Nice pictures and layout.

Inspiring Book 5 out of 5 stars.

It is difficult to eat well when fighting cancer. This book makes it easy to understand simple changes to make and foods to include. When dealing with low energy, it helps to keep food inspiring, and to make it simple. The book is beautiful, and makes it easy to want to make healthier choices. I also love the companion book "cooking with foods to fight cancer."

Editorial Review:

Prostate cancer is now the most common nonskin cancer among men in the United States. In 2005 alone, 250,000 new cases were diagnosed, and that number is certain to rise with each passing year. No one is more aware of this than David Ricketts, experienced cookbook author and recent prostate cancer survivor.

Shortly after surgery and radiation treatments, Ricketts began to research food and lifestyle changes that might inhibit the likelihood of prostate cancer as well as its progression. The result is this uniquely specific cookbook, which takes full advantage of foods thought to fight prostate cancer while eliminating those believed to contribute to the disease. Eat to Beat Prostate Cancer Cookbook features more than 200 delicious recipes for everything from snacks, sandwiches, and drinks to main-course dishes-all foods that will appeal to the entire family. This tremendously useful book also benefits from the author's firsthand experience, as he offers insight into what to expect regarding diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer, as well as practical advice for making the transition to healthier cooking, smarter eating, and a longer life.

Bad advise on diet and eating.

Beating cancer with nutrition 5 out of 5 stars.

"Beating cancer with Nutrition" is my bible as I fight colon cancer. I bought many cancer books after my diagnosis but this is the best one. Some of my friends who don't even have cancer have purchaseed it after looking thru it at my house. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Editorial Review:

The book was developed after working with over 500 cancer patients and organizing 3 international symposiums on the subject. The information contained in BCN is both scientifically backed with references and clinically proven in the hospital with patients. This information helps cancer patients to improve quality and quantity of life. BCN had been translated into Japanese and Chinese and is being translated into Korean. BCN had become a home study continuing education course for registered nurses. BCN 2001 version will contain a 72-minute audio CD version in response to the requests from tired cancer patients who said they needed and audio version of the book to get started. BCN had sold 110,000 copies in 7 years in print, which is impressive for small publishers.
