What you need to know to prevent cancer and heal more quickly if you have it 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

What author Patrick Quillin wants people to know is that there is a direct, documented connection between diet and cancer. You will come away from this book armed with the knowledge you need to prevent cancer or to increase your odds of healing if you have cancer.

Malnutrition, caused when cancer shifts the metabolism into high gear and induces loss of appetite, kills 40 percent of cancer patients. Additionally, cancer researchers estimate that a large percentage of all cancers can be avoided with proper nutrition, low stress levels and psychological wellness.

Quillin, a nutritionist and medical researcher, has spent over 15 years working with 3,000 cancer patients in cancer treatment centers to improve their outcomes. The bottom line of Quillin's research and book is that a well-nourished cancer patient can better manage the disease, and has fewer infections, less side-effects from chemotherapy and radiation, as well as a better quality and quantity of life and improved chances for complete remission.

The book also explains how cancer forms, how various chemotherapies work and how vitamins, minerals and other nutrients (from supplements or food) can work in harmony with chemotherapy to improve treatment results. "Nutrition can make medical therapy more of a selective toxin against the cancer and less damaging to the patient," says Quillin, who advocates that nutrition therapy is an essential part of a comprehensive cancer treatment because:

* Proper nutrition protects patients against the toxic effects of chemotherapy and radiation without reducing their effectiveness in killing cancer;
* Nutrients support the immune system in sequestering and eliminating cancer; and
* Tumors feed on sugar, therefore certain diet restrictions are crucial. Food additives such as Aspartame (NutraSweet) and Saccharin have both been linked to cancer and should also be avoided. Sucralose (Splenda) seems to be safe.

Quillin does not offer prescriptions or treatment for cancer in all it's forms; rather he shows how patients can supplement their current treatment with specific vitamins, minerals and nutrient-rich foods to get better outcomes.

Beating Cancer With Nutrition is also a book for people who want to prevent cancer. People who are inactive, stressed, and have poor diets (high in processed food and low in vegetables and fiber) have an exceptionally high likelihood of developing cancer.

Toxins - The average person comes into contact with 20,000 known carcinogens.
Distress--Scientific studies have found that people with severely stressful lives can be 1500% more prone to developing cancer.
Poor nutrition--The body is built and repaired by the nutrients in our food. We need certain nutrients to fight cancer.
Lack of exercise--40 percent of Americans will develop cancer in their lifetimes, but only 14 percent of highly active American will develop cancer.

Quillin's discussion of what causes cancer shows that we can reduce our chances of getting it by adopting nutrition and exercise habits and avoiding stress and toxins. Quillin offers lengthy explanations of which nutrients are necessary to keep our immune system strong enough to destroy cancer cells as they form.

Cancer patients and healthy people alike will find this book to be eye opening. We seem to have some measure of control in avoiding cancer. This book will make you think hard about your diet, your stress levels and how you can give yourself the best chances of recovering from or avoiding cancer.

Editorial Review:

The book was developed after working with over 500 cancer patients and organizing 3 international symposiums on the subject. The information contained in BCN is both scientifically backed with references and clinically proven in the hospital with patients. This information helps cancer patients to improve quality and quantity of life. BCN had been translated into Japanese and Chinese and is being translated into Korean. BCN had become a home study continuing education course for registered nurses. BCN 2001 version will contain a 72-minute audio CD version in response to the requests from tired cancer patients who said they needed and audio version of the book to get started. BCN had sold 110,000 copies in 7 years in print, which is impressive for small publishers.

Editorial Review:

As the title suggests, Gluten-Free 101: Easy, Basic Dishes without Wheat offers simple, streamlined recipes for those basic foods we all crave when we're gluten-free.

Crust French bread, chewy Pizza, decadent Brownies, flaky Pie Crust, old-fashioned Biscuits. They're all possible using Carol's new, versatile sorghum-based flour blend.

As all gluten-free beginners eventually learn, we can't bake with just one flour the way we did when we ate wheat.

This blend is more nutritious, with more protein and fiber than most gluten-free flour blends. And, you can vary the other flours in the blend to suit your personal tastes and dietary needs.

Recognizing that gluten-free beginners need guidance, Carol offers help on what to eat during the first few weeks after diagnosis, deciphering mysterious culinary terms, setting up a gluten-free pantry, using a bread machine, detecting hidden gluten in commercial foods, and dining away from home.

Recipes are organized into four categories (breads, breakfast, dessert, and main dishes) and offer nutritional content so you can manage your diet wisely. Extensive information about a wide variety of gluten-free flours helps you choose which ones are best for you.

Photos of many of the foods can be seen on Carol's web site.

Great, Easy Recipes 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

We have tried about 8 recipes so far in this cookbook, and to my surprise, they have all be excellent. In addition to healthy, they are very easy to make, and it's amazing how simple it is to change up a few things to make a normal dish even healthier.

Wow! 5 out of 5 stars.

I can't say enough about this new healthy cookbook. The instructions are clear, the recipes are easy, and the results are amazing! I particularly like that the book lays flat--so I can keep it open while I'm cooking. And the bottom line is, I can put great tasting, healthy food on the table for my husband and children--without them suspecting that it's healthy for them. My goodness, even the french fries recipe is better than anything you'll find in a bag! Anyone who can make-over a french fry is tops in my book!

I had never tried rattatouille--or however you spell that--but the movie inspired me to try it. And all I can say is WOW!!!

Just What I Needed at a Very Confusing Time! 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book...It's been such a help after finding out the shocking news that my husband has lymphoma. It uses all the "right foods" nutritionally speaking, to assist with his treatment plan. The food is delicious. So much so that I'm eating healthfully as well. I've found that recipes easy to follow and quick to prepare. It would have been almost impossible for me to figure out how to incorporate soy in our diets in such a tasteful way. I appreciate the book, the tips in it and the peace of mind it's given me in knowing the I'm feeding my loved one the best that I can. Thank you!

Why I decided against this book 1 out of 5 stars.
17 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Background: my PSA has doubled in 6 months, but is still under 4.0. I am putting off a 2nd biopsy until I have given dietary changes a chance to kick in.

{The cover of the book has a picture of tomatoes. I believe Lycopene to be over-hyped at present, since there are no studies that show supplementation lowering PSA levels.}

Mr. Guler's comments worried me. The meat issue is really a fat issue (I wonder if the surge in Atkins adherents will lead to a surge in prostate cancer). The fat issue, as I understand it, is (a) the quantity of fat and (b) an imbalance between omega-3 & omega-6 fats.

Im told that grass-fed beef is lower in fat & has a one-to-one ratio, whereas corn-fattened beef has very little omega-3. So beef isn't entirely out of the question.

Fish can be a problem. Farmed salmon is high in fat, but because of the feed, it contains little or no omega-3.

My new diet has more fish (not farmed) than meat. Complex carbs. Vegetables such as broccoli & peppers, but not potatoes. No dessert. No dairy. Zone diet portions. Any general purpose cookbook will provide sufficient recipes.

Editorial Review:

Based on solid scientific research and endorsed by leading oncologists, it includes dietary guidelines plus 188 delicious, cancer-fighting recipes.

Editorial Review:

This "celebration of food, friends, and healthy living" follows the Food Guide Pyramid recommendations of eating 5 or more servings of fruit and vegetables, 6 to 10 servings of grain foods, and 2 to 3 servings of protein foods daily, and limiting fats and sweets. The recipes are low in fat, high in nutrition, and often inventive. "Tapioca Fruit Pudding" is made with orange juice and vanilla yogurt instead of milk and eggs. "Stuffed Shells with Beef and Tomato Sauce" has only one-half pound of lean ground beef for 6 servings. All chicken recipes start with skinned chicken. Calories and fat grams per serving are provided, and many of the recipes are far less than the recommended maximum 30 percent fat. No esoteric ingredients are required.

The strange thing about this cookbook is that the illustrations are all black-and-white photographs of celebrities--screen and TV stars, an astronaut, athletes, models, etc., who contributed some of the recipes--not a food shot among them. You may love Tony Lama's boots, but is his head shot the best illustration for a recipe for Green Chile Rice Casserole? Despite the lack of food photos, this is a very useful book if you're trying to follow the pyramid and need some fresh and tasty recipes. --Joan Price

Editorial Review:

’The Purple Butterfly’ cameos a year in the life of a thyroid cancer patient. Restrained and sparsely written, it gives the reader a deep insight into the mind of someone who is balancing on the edge of hysteria, yet still feels an obligation to ‘put on a brave face’. A 'must-read' for anyone supporting a friend or relative through a serious illness - this book tells you what he or she never will.

The volume also contains ‘Flying with the Purple Butterfly, which is a manual for those about to undergo radioactive iodine treatment. Based on personal experience, this the first time this information has been published in the UK.

Background:

‘The Purple Butterfly’ is not a work of fiction. It is the real diary kept by Susan from March 2003 to February 2004, and charts her personal thoughts and feelings from before diagnosis, through four operations, and two bouts of intensive radio-iodine treatment. Although the book ends on a positive note, it was not until two years later that Susan’s blood results fell within normal limits. She is now able to look with optimism towards the future.

Appeal:

This book will appeal to a variety of audiences:

a)thyroid cancer patients who want to see how someone else has coped with the disease b) friends and families of anyone with a serious medical condition, so they can get an insight to what they might be thinking or feeling c) anyone interested in unusual medical procedures, who will like the details of a treatment which involves drinking radioactive liquid and being confined to a lead-lined room for four days.
