A must read 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent book. It is written in a warm and caring manner which is easy to understand. It is full of information not just for anyone dealing with a dementia patient, but for anybody who is caring for another person, (or who may think at some point they will). It covers subjects which apply to the caring of anyone who is ill and/or elderly, even if it is not dementia. I would recommend this book to anyone, before they are faced with the illness. I wish I'd read it sooner, but better late than never. Absolutely a great book, it should be in every library. I plan to buy 2 copies for my library, I will definitely NOT donate mine. I can't say enough good things about this book.

Editorial Review:

Revised in 2006 for its twenty-fifth anniversary, this best-selling book is the "bible" for families caring for people with Alzheimer disease, offering comfort and support to millions worldwide. The new edition includes:

-new information on diagnostic evaluation-resources for families and adult children who care for people with dementia-updated legal and financial information-the latest information on nursing homes and other communal living arrangements-new information on research, medications, and the biological causes and effects of dementia

Also available in a large print edition

Calorie Restriction with Optimal Nutrition 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

One of my favorite books dealing with healthy lifestyle is Can We Live 150. The author of the book simply states that we should EAT TO LIVE instead of living to eat. It is a great concept and many of us should be giving some attention to that. Most of the contents of this book, "CR Way", actually evolves around this idea.

As the author of the book "Can We Live 150" says, "full health does not depend on miraculous medication and formulas that cause weight loss or aging reversal, but on the lifestyle that is in harmony with nature." The authors of "CR Way" conclude that "by restricting calories while eating nutrient-dense foods, CR practitioners seek to activate the body's innate longevity system. (...) It is all about building a positive, vital engine that will make your life better, happier, more productive, and longer."

The acronym CR stands for Calorie Restriction. And that is what the book is all about. There is a theory that calorie restriction can greatly benefit one's longevity. One of the best known authors dealing with this issue is Dr. Roy Walford who wrote a number of books on the subject. In "CR Way" the authors present and explain the newest relevant scientific research and show how to put it into practice.

I recommend this book both for people wanting to live better, healthier and longer life, and for people who are concerned about such fatalities as cancer, diabetes, or heart disease. According to the authors, living the CR way greatly diminish the chance of getting any of these diseases. Whether that is true or not, a sound approach to CRON (Calorie Restriction with Optimal Nutrition) will increase one's appreciation of food, and generally lead to a better quality of life.

The authors introduce in the book an exceptional glucose-control system. This system is supported by interesting, low-glycemic food recipes and moderate exercise suggestions designed to keeping your glucose levels low.

The key points of the CR Way lifestyle are:

- cooking food less
- eating moderate amounts of protein
- finishing any food intake by early afternoon

I also found very useful the Appendices with some answers to most common questions. Appendix 3 is actually devoted to Frequently Asked Questions.

Other books that I recommend:

Nutritional Healing
Can We Live 150
as well as other books by Tombak, Fuhrman, Hyman, McDougall,

and also my latest discovery:
Harmonious Environment: Beautify, Detoxify and Energize Your Life...

Editorial Review:

When it comes to living longer, scientists are discovering that less is more. By following Calorie Restriction, a revolutionary diet that provides the body with fewer calories than is traditionally required, people are getting dramatic benefits. Now, with The CR Way, you too can slow the aging process; protect against cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes; and increase your energy and mental capabilities. And, if needed, you'll lose weight and keep it off.

Paul McGlothin and Meredith Averill, leaders of the Calorie Restriction Society, provide quick and easy menus and recipes so delicious that you will wonder why you ever wanted to eat more than you need. And for those who want some of the benefits without sacrificing all the calories, the authors will show you how to plan a diet that works for you. Groundbreaking and controversial, The CR Way is your key to a happier, healthier life.

From a world-renowned neurologist: the first book to feature a scientifically substantiated program for the only treatment for Alzheimer’s: prevention.

Alzheimer’s is pandemic among older adults worldwide, and as baby boomers age it promises to be the Great American Epidemic of the twenty-first century. Unlike other books in the category, which focus primarily on caring for an Alzheimer’s patient after diagnosis, The Anti-Alzheimer’s Prescription presents a program to lower your risk by 70%:

• Assess your risk factors and determine your “Real Brain Age”

• Step One: the Anti-Alzheimer’s Diet, including recipes and a twenty-eight-day menu

• Step Two: daily physical exercises for the body and mind

• Step Three: daily “neurobics” to build a big brain reserve

• Step Four: the importance of stress reduction and quality sleep

• Making a diagnosis and the latest medical therapies being developed

For the millions of men and women at risk for developing this debilitating illness, The Anti-Alzheimer’s Prescription is a lifesaving breakthrough.

This is a beautiful story. It's perfect for reading to children who have grandparents with major memory loss. The illustrations by Julie Vivas are equally beautiful.

Wonderful Children's Book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I discovered this book when my roommate told me it was one of her favorite children's book. Both my roommate and I are currently pursuing our Master's Degree in Elementary Education and are always looking for great books for our future classrooms. She informed me that this book is one she had to have immediately after reading it! Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge is a young boy who lives next door to an "old people's home" and he describes each of the elderly people he has become friends with. His favorite is Nancy Alison Delacourt Cooper because she has four names just like he does. When Wilford overhears family members discussing the sadness of Miss Nancy losing her memory he sets out to find out what a memory is by asking all his elderly friends. He takes all the things he thinks are a memory and gives them to Miss Nancy. She begins to reminisce about the memories that the items remind her of and she is so happy that Wilford has given her back her memory. This book is incredibly sweet and will have you "awwwww"ing on each and every page. The illustrations are hilarious and depict abstract pictures of the elderly people and Wilford. As a 21 year old I found the book touching and think that children of any age will also be able to relate to it. It is a wonderful book to read to children who have grandparents or family members who have Alzheimer's and can make a little sense about the aspect of losing a memory. This book will most definitely be in my classroom no matter what grade I teach. I would recommend this book to anyone of any age!

Editorial Review:

An essential behind-the-scenes foray into the world of cutting-edge memory research that unveils findings about memory loss only now available to general readers.

When Sue Halpern decided to emulate the first modern scientist of memory, Hermann Ebbinghaus, who experimented on himself, she had no idea that after a day of radioactive testing, her brain would become so “hot” that leaving through the front door of the lab would trigger the alarm. This was not the first time while researching Can’t Remember What I Forgot, part of which appeared in The New Yorker, that Halpern had her head examined, nor would it be the last.

Halpern spent years in the company of the neuroscientists, pharmacologists, psychologists, nutritionists, and inventors who are hunting for the genes and molecules, the drugs and foods, the machines, the prosthetics, the behaviors and therapies that will stave off Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia and keep our minds–and memories–intact. Like many of us who have had a relative or friend succumb to memory loss, who are getting older, who are hearing statistics about our own chances of falling victim to dementia, who worry that each lapse of memory portends disease, Halpern wanted to find out what the experts really knew, what the bench scientists were working on, how close science is to a cure, to treatment, to accurate early diagnosis, and, of course, whether the crossword puzzles, sudokus, and ballroom dancing we’ve been told to take up can really keep us lucid or if they’re just something to do before the inevitable overtakes us.

Beautifully written, sharply observed, and deeply informed, Can’t Remember What I Forgot is a book full of vital information–and a solid dose of hope.

For Physicians and Patients Alike... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I believe this is a must read book for doctors and patients alike. While not cozy and comforting, it presents the facts in a wholly acceptable and honest manner.

I read this after both of my parents passed away from cancer 10 months apart in an attempt to make some sense of what they endured both mentally and medically. This book provided the answers and a great measure of righteous anger at the attending physicians and their attitudes that somehow they could cure the uncureable right up until the very last moment, depriving everyone of the necessary time to say the things that needed to be said.

This book will tell you that you, as the patient, must seek the truth about your illness as it isn't always handed to you by your physician. For the physician, it teaches how to tell the truth without destroying the time left to terminal patients.

Editorial Review:

Attempting to demythologize the process of dying, Nuland explores how we shall die, each of us in a way that will be unique. Through particular stories of dying--of patients, and of his own family--he examines the seven most common roads to death: old age, cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer's, accidents, heart disease, and strokes, revealing the facets of death's multiplicity.

"It's impossible to read How We Die without realizing how earnestly we have avoided this most unavoidable of subjects, how we have protected ourselves by building a cultural wall of myths and lies. I don't know of any writer or scientist who has shown us the face of death as clearly, honestly and compassionately as Sherwin Nuland does here."--James Gleick
