Don't Waste Your Money if You Have Other Baby Blues Books 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent example of the authors recycling prior released material to sell another book! First of all, I love the Baby Blues strip and have all of the collections of strips that have been published up until now. I was excited to see that another collection was being released of what I assumed was strips published in newspapers over the last year as these collections normally are. I started reading this collection. I thought as I read that I had already seen these. I looked at the first few pages to see if the authors mention the prior release of these strips, but could find nothing at first glance.

This book is a combined collection of "Briefcase Full of Baby Blues" and "Night Shift" which are the last two books that were published. You only find this out by the small print on the bottom of the outside back cover. This is deceitful to readers, but I guess the authors laugh all the way to the bank. I won't order their collections again on the "pre-order" option by Amazon again. I will wait in the future for the book to be in my local chain bookstore so I don't get cheated again. The books are never released anyway when the publisher says it will be. It has been 30 to 60 days later each time.

Editorial Review:

"Nothing is certain but death and taxes. And laundry." --Baby Blues proverb

When the recipe box has more pizza coupons than recipes, or for those parenting days when all you seem to accomplish is brushing your hair and making a tray of ice cubes, Baby Blues offers parental fatigue redemption. The brainchild of Rick Kirkman and Jerry Scott, this Baby Blues treasury features cartoons from Briefcase Full of Baby Blues and Night Shift.

From prophetic Baby Blues proverbs like, "The grass is always greener on the knees of your kid's new white pants," to Dinner Table Olympics where Synchronized Whining is the main event, young parents Darryl and Wanda keep pace with energetic children Zoe, Hammie, and baby Wren, as Kirkman and Scott expertly navigate the daily nuances of newborns, nocturnal diaper changes, and the nirvana of family life.

Editorial Review:

When does 1 + 1 = 3 (or more)? When you've got a baby on the way.

Part of that new math, says #1 New York Times bestselling author Jill Conner Browne -- whom USA Today calls "just plain funny" -- includes the addition of an outsize sense of humor to balance the equation of your growing family.

The Sweet Potato Queens' Guide to Raising Children for Fun and Profit is a hilarious (though not scientifically tested) wink at the time-honored mysteries of parenting, because anybody who has ever had a kid or has ever known one knows that the experience is neither fun nor profitable -- so you might as well laugh!

As each generation begins its hopeful, happy, and, yes, sometimes harrowing journey as Parent and Child, together they spawn a new body of "knowledge," the nuances of which will elude the Experts every time. Here are stories of the things we do for Mother Love -- or, the most incredibly full-time volunteer job ever -- and tips guaranteed not to be found in any other parenting guide.

  • How to talk to a pregnant woman
  • How the diamonds on delivery policy can speed up the labor nature intended
  • Why a good mother is always adept at subterfuge
  • The list of things you wouldn't think you would have to tell kids not to do
  • Why mothers of sons can never retire
  • Why, for parents, it's just a short drive to the poorhouse

The Sweet Potato Queens' Guide to Raising Children for Fun and Profit will have everyone who's ever been a parent -- or has ever thought of becoming one -- or has ever been a child -- or is still one -- giggling and grinning (no small feat) through those childbearing years...and beyond.

Good stuff! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Wife and I got this as a gift for a friend / expecting mother, but admittedly as new parents ourselves, we flipped through it first too. Some of the quips were almost sad and scary, but overall, we laughed our heads off. This was confirmed by the mom-to-be we gave it to. This will go on our list of gifts for expecting-and-new moms. It's good as a source of "relaxation" for anyone unsure of what they've just gotten themselves into and some of the feelings they might be having. Moreso, it's just downright funny.

Editorial Review:

Trisha Ashworth and Amy Nobile conducted interviews with hundreds of mothers while researching their best-selling book I Was a Really Good Mom Before I Had Kids. It didn't take long before these moms began to reveal their Dirty Little Secrets—surprising, thought-provoking, guilty confessions they hadn't told anyone else. Cringe-worthy moments ("I bit my daughter's finger trying to steal a bite of her cookie.") meet real insights ("I love my kids but I didn't always. It took time to fall in love with them."). These are the private thoughts that every mom has—and every mom can relate to.

A second helping of a great comic strip 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Jeremy returns in his second treasury, combining strips from the books "Don't Roll Your Eyes at Me, Young Man!" and "Are We an Us?" Not much has changed since the first treasury. He still wishes his parents would get off his back, he still doesn't understand women, and he still dreams of making it big in music. But whether he's trying to decide what to do about the upcoming Gingivitis concert, win back Sara from a sophomore, support a friend's mom who has cancer, or sneak over to his girlfriend's babysitting job, he's sure to find the humor in any situation.

Unfortunately, I don't get the strip in my local paper, so I have to wait for these books to enjoy it. But I can certainly see why it has become such a popular strip. Everyone can appreciate the humor in the storylines, which poke fun at everyone equally. The visual gages are some of the best in the papers today and make for some of the best strips in the book as well. And it's easy to like these characters because they really do have good hearts just beneath the surface. My only complaint with this book is that the strips don't appear to be in order. It makes for a little confusion when a character is first introduced after we've already met him or her, but over all, it really is minor.

This is a wonderful collection that should win new fans and satisfy the old. Buy it today and enjoy the laughs.

Editorial Review:

Widely lauded by critics, colleagues, and readers, Zits is has been twice honored with the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award as the Best Newspaper Comic Strip, and received the Max and Moritz Award for Best International Comic Strip.

This treasury, Big Honkin' Zits, represents a compilation of Don't Roll Your Eyes at Me, Young Man! and Are We an "Us"?. With friends and family, Jeremy ponders life's great philosophical questions, such as, "If the universe is constantly expanding, how come the sky never gets any bigger?" He tackles serious issues, too, deciding with his buddy, Hector, to shave his head to support a friend's mom who's battling cancer.

Big Honkin' Zits masterfully guides its readers through the real-life joys and heartaches of being a teenager.

Editorial Review:

BE HAPPY OR I"LL SCREAM is for every married woman who has found just the tiniest bit of disconnect between the image of a perfect family in her head—think “The Brady Bunch” or “The Huxtables”—and the evidence in front of her eyes.  Instead of darling and compliant rosy-cheeked children and an adorably tolerant husband ready to go along with zany shenanigans, most women are faced with: kids who view family outings with all the enthusiasm of hardened inmates forced to bust rocks in roadside Alabama and a man who would trade every last one of her kooky ideas for a just a teeny little bit more sex and a hot meal on the table at six.

Sheri Lynch is a superb humorist of modern marriage, mores, and motherhood.    Her take on what life is really like inside a marriage—as opposed to what it looks like on the holiday card version of same—will ring both wacky and true to any woman who was ever foolish enough to dream of the perfect marriage and family.

Imagine a $50,000 Miata; Enjoyable but a Lousy Value 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Car Talk's been on the air for a long time, and they must have plenty of great material for compilations like this. Unfortunately, what went on this edition, while funny enough, just isn't worth the high price. Save your money for blank cassettes and just record the regular show is my advice.

Hilarious! Click-n-Clack on Cars, Dads & Families 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If you have either a car, a Dad or a family, then you will love this show! "Click & Clack" are always great on NPR, and this tape/CD compiles some of their best calls & rants loosely arranged around the themse of cars, Dad's & families. It's wonderful way to spend 90 minutes, especially if you're driving with your family (yes, Dad... you did that too... ;-). Enjoy!

Editorial Review:

It's a fact: 98% of what fathers say is dead wrong. Join famous syndicated radio talk show hosts and ingenious car experts Click and Clack as they bring this little known fact to light. Car Talk: Why You Should Never Listen to Your Father ... is a hilarious collection of the Tappet brothers' favorite calls over the years about fathers, fatherly advice, and fatherly negotiations around the use of cars and car care. Fathers may be wrong most of the time, but Tom and Ray show us why we love them anyway.

"If you utter the trigger word 'Badminton' to your grandmother..." 5 out of 5 stars.

"...her original programming will activate and she will kill all humans."

This caption runs underneath a picture of an elderly woman in a rocking chair reading, while a boy looks at her trepidatiously.

If you find this sort of thing amusing, I suspect that like me, you'll very much enjoy this book. These comics are sort of like a British youngsters version of Dan Piraro's excellent "Bizarro." By making things deliberately topsy-turvy, Andy Riley gets us to think about the world in a different way.

And that's a good thing.

Editorial Review:

New, wicked humor from the author of the bestselling Bunny Suicides books

On the heels of his runaway Bunny Suicides books, cartoonist Andy Riley turns his irreverent wit to another group of small creatures that lurk among us seemingly everywhere: children.

From the benign (every ant you meet must be named) to the truly cruel (Ronald McDonald is dead!), each hilarious cartoon has a tall tale to educate children and entertain wicked adults everywhere.

Praise for Andy Riley:
“Wonderfully deviant.”—The Washington Post
“It’s the funniest, bunniest book I’ve ever read.”—Elton John
“Brilliantly researched. The most important book of the year.”—Hugh Grant

Fatherhood 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am a senior in high school, and I have just finished the popular book Fatherhood by Bill Cosby. As most of us already know, Bill Cosby is a comical man. He puts a comedic twist on most everything he says, yet in a serious way. I enjoy how he can mix reailty with comedy, which is why I enjoyed this book so much. I give this book a very high rating and hope others will also.

I am not a father myself, but reading this book gave me advice for the future. The book was set up in chapters that coordinated with the different stages in his kids lives. Bill Cosby talked about the joys of having kids, along with the bad experiences he had with them. He also explained the relationship that he had with his wife, which was interesting. There were many parts in the book that I could relate to within my family. The book was just extraordinary in the details included.

The thing that I liked the most about this book was the fact that he used life like details instead of making his family seem like the Brady Bunch. He wasn't afraid to add embarassing moments he had, or times that frustrated him. The book was overall very intellegently put together. I liked this book, and would reccomend it to others in hopes for help from this expert.

Editorial Review:

The perennial #1 nationwide bestseller-and now, a hit animated series on Nick at Nite.

From Bill Cosby, America's favorite TV dad, comes the ideal gift for Father's Day...

Fatherhood is...

- Pretending the present you love most is soap-on-a-rope
- Helping your children learn English as a foreign language
- Knowing that "Everything's okay, Dad" means "I haven't killed anyone"
- ...and more priceless advice and hilarious wisdom.

Editorial Review:

For the first time ever a cancelled show has been resurrected on the basis of its cult following in syndication, on the internet and on DVD (Over 2.2 million DVDs sold to date!) and we've got the tie–in book authored by one of the show's hilarious lead writers and animators!

At first sight, the Griffens may seem like a normal blue collar family from Quonochontaug Rhode Island, but Peter (the family's loutish dad), Brian (the erudite, martini–swilling pet dog) and Stewie (the evil toddler son) set them apart from all others.

Now Stewie––a true baby genius and the most popular of the Griffen clan––speaks out. Having been hell bent on achieving world domination ever since he escaped the cursed ovarian Bastille he was incarcerated in for nine grueling months, he has finally decided that in order to rule the world we live in one must first understand it. Herewith are his musings on family, love, parenting, preschool, work, pop culture, politics and more. If only we knew then what Stewie knows now, adults everywhere could have defeated their mother's matriarchal tyranny and toppled the "gynocracy" she ruled over . . .and god knows what else!

This book is for the insufferable child in us all, eager to buck the ways of the old guard or just eager for a laugh.
