The Girl with the Dreams 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Jackie Mitchell set high goals and dreams to become a professional major-league baseball player. Even though there were the stereotypes about girls not playing baseball, she didn't let that hinder her determination in becoming her very best. Through hard-work and lots of training, she became a major league pitcher. On April 2, 1932 she carved her name into history by becoming known as the "Girl Who Struck Out Babe Ruth." This book depicts that the support of family and the determination of a girl, dreams are possible. This book does a fantastic job to portray the history of Jackie Mitchell in her major-league debut, but also gives information pertaining to her minor-league career and also baseball's formal ban of women from major and minor league. The illustrations make the reader feel that they are sitting in all different areas of a baseball field from right behind home plate to the outfield. I would definitely recommend this book when studying about influential females in history.

Editorial Review:

For as long as she could remember, Jackie Mitchell's father had told Jackie she could be good at whatever she wanted, as long as she worked at it. Jackie worked at baseball. She worked hard. And before long Jackie could outplay anyone in her neighborhood -- even the boys.

She had one pitch -- a wicked, dropping curve ball. But no seventeen-year-old girl could pitch against Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. It was unthinkable. Then on April 2, 1931, the New York Yankees stopped in Tennessee for an exhibition game against the Chattanooga Lookouts. And on that day Jackie Mitchell made baseball history.

Marissa Moss tells a true story of determination and heroism, a gem of baseball history sure to inspire ballplayers of all ages. And C. F. Payne's vibrant, glorious illustrations make the golden age of baseball come alive.

Delightful and inspiring tales of some of the most fascinating and awesome women of colonial times

American history is rife with stories of our founding fathers, but what of the women who lived and worked alongside these men? This fun and exciting book whisks young readers back to early America, introducing them to a refreshing assortment of brave and unique American women of colonial times. Readers will be amazed by the stories of such remarkable colonial women as Mumbet, a slave who won her freedom in a Massachusetts courtroom in the 1780s; Mercy Warren, whose passionate plays about the Revolution thrust her onto the theater scene as America's first female playwright; and Peggy Arnold, the wife of Benedict Arnold, who was as formidable a spy as her notorious husband. With these enlightening profiles, Mary Rodd Furbee brings these strong and influential women to life to encourage, inspire, and delight young readers.

Mary Rodd Furbee (Morgantown, WV) is a part-time writing and journalism instructor at West Virginia University School of Journalism and has written for many publications. She is the author of five children's books, including Anne Bailey, Frontier Scout; and Mary Ingles, Indian Captive.

somewhat disapointed... 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was somewhat disapointed to find that a lot of the prayers in this book are the same ones in Stormie's book "The Power of a Praying Parent," which I own too. The only difference is that this book features beautiful pictures on each page, and only has prayers, whereas "the power of a Praying Parent" has small stories and thoughts from Stormie herself and is therefore longer. I probably wouldn't have bought it had I been able to search inside this one and see what it was like first. This would be a great gift for a new mother or for a parent who does not own "the power of a praying parent."

Editorial Review:

Stormie Omartian, bestselling author of The Power of Praying® Parent, turns her heart and attention toward little girls. Her loving and inspired prayers, interspersed with promises and blessings from Scripture, encourage every parent, grandparent, and special caregiver to pray for these dear ones. Each page is beautifully illustrated by celebrated, award–winning artist Sandra Kuck. With the combined talent these two remarkable women hold, this gift book is destined to become a precious keepsake.

The little girl, who hears such prayers and promises being whispered for her health and protection, faith and future, will draw close to the one praying—finding a safe haven within those loving arms.

Editorial Review:

Twelve-year-old Emily Watson's story is a shocking, compassionate re-creation of daily life for the urban poor one hundred years ago. At the dingy, overcrowded Acme Garment Factory, Emily Watson stands for eleven hours a day clipping threads from blouses. Every time the boss passes, he shouts at her to snip faster. But if Emily snips too fast, she could ruin the garment and be docked pay. If she works too slowly, she will be fired. She desperately needs this job. Without the four dollars a week it brings, her family will starve. When a reporter arrives, determined to expose the terrible conditions in the factory, Emily finds herself caught between the desperate immigrant girls with whom she works and the hope of change. Then tragedy strikes, and Emily must decide where her loyalties lie. With Factory Girl, Barbara Greenwood returns to the unique hybrid of fact and fiction that earned her acclaim for The Last Safe House, A Pioneer Thanksgiving and others. The life of working children in North American cities in the early part of the twentieth century directly inspired young Emily's story. Her fictional experiences are interwoven with nonfiction sections describing family life in a slum, the fight to improve social conditions, the plight of working children then and now, and much more. Rarely seen archival photos accompany this story of the past as only Barbara Greenwood can tell it.

It's Finally Here! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I've been waiting for this book for a long time, and it was worth the wait! Several years have passed since the last Elsie book, and Elsie is now 21.She has passed her majority, and with that comes more responsiblities and difficulties. She is also wondering if she will ever find that one special guy to spend her life with. Rising doubts from her distasterous experience with Tom Jackson a few years ago cause Elsie to worry that she won't know what true love really is. She does know though, that her Heavanly Father will always be with her, no matter what happens. She finally does find her true love, and knows that he will always love her and protect her through thick and thin. Also including a touching description of Elsie's visit to her birthplace, where her beautiful mother lived and died, this book is a wonderful addition to the Elsie Dinsmore series.

Editorial Review:

As the saga of Elsie Dinsmore continues, Elsie is now twenty-one. Love and marriage are very much on her mind as she struggles with disillusionment from the past and the doubts that still trouble her heart. Old friends may hold the answers, but will she recognize true love when it is offered?

A pleasure to read, and informative too! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

My nine year old daughter virtually consumed this biography. This is the 3rd book she has read in this series, and she has asked for more. I have read them along with her--they are appropriate for 8-10 year olds, interesting, accessible, but never condescending or preachy. Based on my knowledge of the subjects, they are only marginally fictionalized. In a world of pop singers and barely literate actresses, it is a pleaseure to be able to provide real heroes and heroines that modern kids will enjoy and be inspired by.

Editorial Review:

Dear Reader:

The Childhood of Famous Americans series, sixty-five years old in 1997, chronicles the early years of famous American men and women in an accessible manner. Each book is faithful in spirit to the values and experiences that influenced the person's development. History is fleshed out with fictionalized details, and conversations have been added to make the stories come alive to today's reader, but every reasonable effort has been made to make the stories consistent with the events, ethics, and character of their subjects.

These books reaffirm the importance of our American heritage. We hope you learn to love the heroes and heroines who helped shape this great country. And by doing so, we hope you also develop a lasting love for the nation that gave them the opportunity to make their dreams come true. It will do the same for you.

Happy Reading!

The Editors
