Section on sex too much for young readers 3 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Until the very end of the book, I was impressed and my daughter seemed pleased. However, I found the chapter on sex to be bothersome. My daughter is 10 and while we have discussed sex, I don't feel that a book of this type for this age group (grades 4-7) should be defining anal sex. I am not opposed to discussing sex openly and opening dialog in which we can bring up our morals, but I don't see the purpose in explaining oral sex and anal sex in a book intended for this age group.

good, but possibly confusing 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

While this book is very good in its discussion on sexuality, my one problem is that the pictures are quite artsy. This will be interesting for children, but there is the good possibility that they will be confused as to what the body parts actually look like. With supplemental pictures and and adult ready to answer questions, this is a good book to help teach children.

Editorial Review:

"Mom, where do babies come from?" Many parents live in fear of the day their child asks that question—which inevitably happens, often as early as the preschool years. Here is a picture book designed especially for young children who are becoming sexually aware but aren’t ready to learn about sexual intercourse. Written with warmth and honesty, Amazing You! presents clear and age-appropriate information about reproduction, birth, and the difference between girls’ and boys’ bodies. Lynne Cravath’s whimsical illustrations enliven the text, making this a book that parents will gladly share with their young ones.

Lose the 'magazine' inserts 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Needless to say I was somewhat taken aback by the inserts in the bible. It has several magazine like inserts scattered throughout the Bible. These are on full color, thicker, shiny paper and contain different quizzes for the girls to take. Some of them are good, there is a spiritual gifts quiz, parent/child relationship quiz and friends quiz. Then there are others. These deal with dating (a.k.a. divorce practice). Okay, so I have strong opinions on dating that I know not everyone shares but these particular inserts don't even attempt to make a biblical connection. They are nothing different than what you would find on the magazine rack at the store. There is an insert on your self-image which includes this question with the following answers:

At the top of this year's New Year's resolutions list is ...

A. Start lifting weights - you heard it's good for your bones.
B. Work on that muscle tone - no more dreading swimsuit season.
C. Lose 15 pounds and buy a push-up bra - the new me!
Now, could you please tell me what place that has in a Bible!?!

Then there are the 'ever so inspirational' reflections from the other side which have quotes from boys. Here is one:

What makes you ask a girl on a second date? My dream girl...if I went out with a girl and had fun and was able to hold an interesting/funny conversation with her and was also attracted to her, then I would certainly ask her out again.
Well, fabulous, so if my daughter reads this she will think all she has to do is be attractive and be able to talk and she will make the perfect date. No need to be devoted to Christ, just cute and funny. Good grief! Zondervan really let the ball drop when they published this Bible with these pages in it.

In the interest of fairness I want to say that we are keeping the bible. I know that sounds strange after all that I have just said, but the actual bible and study helps in it are good. It has an introduction to each book to give a grasp of the setting. There are profiles of all the women in the bible, good and bad, so that girls can learn from their examples. There are little study notes throughout that are helpful. But, we will be cutting out the 'magazine' pages. I have no intention of bringing pagan teen magazines into my house and I will certainly not have them coming in through my daughter's bible.

Editorial Review:

Packed with personal notes, cool quizzes, challenging insights, smart advice, and open discussion about life today, True Images is the Bible for real teenage girls with real lives. This revised edition features the same relevant features with updated content, a new interior design, and a new cover.

Editorial Review:

If Tom Sawyer had been a girl, Aunt Polly would certainly have seen to it that she had a copy of this book and with a heartfelt blessing. Its a magical cornucopia of projects, devices, toys, gifts, dolls, recipes, decorations, perfumes, wax and clay modelling, oil and water-color painting and games, all with clear and practical directions for how to make and play them. Vintage Americana by the Beard sisters, two of the founders of Girl Scouting in the United States.

"In the Beard sisters' version, 'the American girl' ranges in age from eight to eighteen. Healthy and spirited, she thinks nothing of taking a ten-mile 'romp' through woods and fields with a group of friends, and collects flowers and leaves for preservation or presentation to friends and relations. Above all, however, the Beards' girl is handy. She can make a hat rack, a screen, or a bookshelf; fashion a macrame hammock or a cornhusk doll; and draw, paint, sculpt, or decorate a room.
The American Girls Handy Book, in short, by emphasizing what girls can do, presents a portrait of girlhood that is vigorous, active, and full of possibilities."

Love it! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed this girls' hair style. It gave me good ideas and the directions were easy to understand and follow. My 3-year daughter looks cute every day because of it. I also tried some of the styles on my 10-year-old niece. I recommend this book for moms and girls who need some help in getting creative with hair.

good for older teen girls 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a good book for an older girl who has experience using styling tools and products.
If you are getting it for a younger girl this is not the book for you.
Nice hair styles and nice styling ideas, but not for beginners.

Great Hair Ideas 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has great finishing ideas for young girls hair. I like that is shows styles and how to adapt it for different hair types. It shows different accessories and ways to change up that style. It is a fun book and helps me move past the normal way I have been doing my daughter's hair.

Editorial Review:

DK has created a fresh, fabulous series all about finding your own style and using the baubles girls adore as the perfect way to personalize a hairstyle or outfit. In Fabulous Hair and Super Style, the how-to book is raised to a new level of glamour and fun.

An enchanting must-have keepsake for Beatrix Potter fans! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

'Beatrix Potter: A Journal" is a beautifully bound keepsake that Beatirx Potter fans will cherish for years to come. It is presented in the form of a journal or rather an album, and basically contains journal entries dating back to when Beatrix was 16 years old and had begun discovering wonderful things that helped her evolve into the creative writer and creator of Peter Rabbit and friends.

The journal is beautifully put together - there are old family pictures, reproductions of Beatrix's original sketches and drawings, personal documents [e.g. Beatrix's old report card] - what a delight to peruse these treasures. The journal entries themselves make for absorbing reading - though they are in cursive form and younger reders may need help with deciphering what is written. There are reproductions of letters to family and friends, delightful illustrations throughout the journal. Of interest is information as to how certain characters in The Tale of Peter Rabbit and Friends was inspired by real-life people, such as the character of Farmer McGregor.

There are many lift-the-flap features in this journal that makes it even more of a treat - there's an envelope containing a reproduction of the letter which contains the story of Peter Rabbit complete with illustrations, a map of the beautiful Lake District, a paper version of the game of Peter Rabbit, and the prize jewel in this journal - right at the end of the journal, embedded into it, is a little book "The Tale of Peter Rabbit"! One would not know it, for it is concealed so well - and indeed a delight to peruse.

I can't recommend this highly enough. I am a life-long fan of Beatrix Potter and my three-year old daughter is following in my footsteps. It is such a treat to be able to share this book with her!

Editorial Review:

This lavish, illustrated journal describes Beatrix Potter’s life as a young woman in Victorian England as she struggles to achieve independence and to find artistic success and romantic love. Using witty, observant commentary taken from Beatrix’s own diaries, the journal features a wealth of watercolor paintings, sketches, photographs, letters and period memorabilia to recreate the world in which she lived.

Empowering and informative 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

This book goes a long way towards encouraging girls (and women!) to put their creative powers to practical use. It is so gratifying to learn that many everyday items (ice cream cones; Toll House cookies) were invented by women. And the items that are not so 'everyday' (Kevlar; space shields) have such a positive impact on the world around us. The illustrations are wonderfully creative, blending the fascinating details of the text into whimsical collages. Don't forget the sidebars - lots of fun facts there as well.

Loved it. Very inspirational. 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I first read the book with my daughter and then shared it with my Girl Scout troop. It was very inspirational and a joy to see some many innovations coming from women.

Editorial Review:

In kitchens and living rooms, in garages and labs and basements, even in converted chicken coops, women and girls have invented ingenious innovations that have made our lives simpler and better. Their creations are some of the most enduring (the windshield wiper) and best loved (the chocolate chip cookie). What inspired these women, and just how did they turn their ideas into realities?
