A welcome addition to any young woman's library 4 out of 5 stars.

Reviewed by Susan Pettrone for Reader Views (11/06)

As any mother, aunt, grandmother or friend can attest, growing up is hard...especially for young girls in today's society. Not only do the rules seem to change daily in regards to clothing, music and books, but the simple art of making friends changes as well. Being cool is a day to day struggle, and boys....well, it's safe to say that boys are always a mystery! Thus comes into play the book, "Between: A Girls Guide to Life." This book addresses not only the subjects of dressing cool, being popular and fitting in but it also addresses how God fits into a girls life and how He can make all the difference in the world when it comes to feeling more secure and being happy with the "you" God created. Through its well thought out sections, a young girl finds guidance, understanding and advice in easy to understand language and real life examples.

Separated into three chapters entitled: "You," "Others" and "God," this book is not only easy to navigate but easy to comprehend as well, for both growing girls finding their way in life and their mothers/loved ones as well. I was especially impressed with the down to earth, common sense approach in the section about "mean girls." As mean girls are a "given" part of any child's life, this section offered some every day examples and easy to apply advice, something that is absent from many "teen help" books on the market today.

Though this book was written for mothers and daughters as a stepping off place for discussion, I can see how it could easily work equally as well as a gift from a loving aunt, grandmother or even family friend. The truth of the matter is, anytime you can get teenage girls engaged in a discussion concerning the subjects in this book, then their lives will be smoother because of it...and it only matters that the discussion is with someone who cares for the girl; not that loved one's title. As an aunt of a preteen niece, this book is top on my "must buy" list for her and her mother to share this holiday season. And as an educator of Talented and Gifted students, it will also hold a prominent place on my bookshelf to help future teens through rough times in their lives.

I would highly recommend "Between: A Girls Guide to Life" for anyone who has a pre-teen or teen age young woman in their life. It is filled with simple, easy to relate to chapters and solutions and, in fact, even has several "quizzes" for young women to take to see how they in fact would react in certain situations. And it is the simply written text and friendly illustrations that make this one book that will see use time and time again. Simply said, this is one book that will be a welcome addition to any young woman's library.

Editorial Review:

An insightful book for preteen girls that looks and reads like an irresistibly fun magazine, BeTween offers a wealth of wisdom to a booming and most impressionable audience. Through colorful articles, quizzes, games, and lists, girls age eight to twelve are encouraged to grow spiritually and socially in every major area of life. Still, most admirably, the book encourages girls to enjoy being their age rather than succumbing to modern culture’s temptations to grow up too fast.

Best-selling author Vicki Courtney speaks to girls and women of all ages, and her sold-out conference events for tween girls and their moms are testament to the imminent success that awaits BeTween.

Revolve Devotional Bible for Teen Girls 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I found that this Bible was laid out to draw the interest of a young woman between the ages of 13-20. Besides the scriptures in each Book of the Bible, there were other short stories and paragraphs interspersed with illustrations throughout to help the person to compare how the words and message in Biblical times of the Old and New Testament could relate to their own personal life. Hopefully, they could come to a conclusion that people have similar problems and situations no matter how many years separate the generations.

Editorial Review:

With nearly a million Revolve fans across the world,

the Revolve Devotional Bible

is the perfect gift for the teen girl wanting to dig deeper in the Word and develop the discipline of reading Scripture. This devotional Bible can be read as a daily Bible, or by the topic most interesting to the reader. Filled with fun story like descriptions of the women in the Bible, study sections for "digging deeper," and daily devotional readings discussing applicable topics, this Bible is a great resource for every teen girl! Includes both Old and New Testaments of the New Century Version. The Paperback version includes french flaps.

Excellent 5 out of 5 stars.

My 7 year old son could not put this book down! He read the entire book in one afternoon, and then was able to complete his biography project for school without any additional research. The book brought Amelia Earhart to life; it was comprehensive and interesting, with so many insights that I had never known before. There were also numerous sketches and maps which would keep a youngster engaged throughout the book. This book gets a resounding "WOW!" from us.

Editorial Review:

Amelia Earhart was a woman of many "firsts." In 1932, she became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. In 1935, she also became the first woman to fly across the Pacific. From her early years to her mysterious 1937 disappearance while attempting a flight around the world, readers will find Amelia Earhart's life a fascinating story.

Not Just Another Princess Book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book for my daughter's birthday. She has taken all of the advice to heart. When I asked my daughter what the main idea of the book was, she told me that "being a princess was all about making other people feel like royalty and always trying to be kind to others." I appreciate how beautiful and well constructed this book is but, mostly I appreciate how it made my daughter feel and that she carries it with her and rereads sections over and over again.

Editorial Review:

Young readers to the tiara born will delight in this novelty-rich resource no princess would be caught without.

Madame Sparklington is finally retiring from her exclusive finishing school for young ladies. But fret not! She is committing all her wisdom to this lighthearted yet practical guide to bringing out the princess in every girl. Within these prettily packed pages are tips on how to dress; on deportment and etiquette; on health, hair and beauty; on Prince Charmings and preparing for your first ball. Gorgeously girly and filled with such novelties as booklets, flaps, and cards; a mix-and-match wardrobe; and glitter galore; here is a treasure trove of secrets for princesses to pore over and to put charming to good use.

Editorial Review:

Girls today are in crisis--and this book shows why. Drawing on a vast array of lively historical sources, unpublished diaries by adolescent girls, and photographs that conjure up memories of the past, The Body Project chronicles how growing up in a female body has changed over the past century and why that experience is more difficult today than ever before.

Girls' bodies have certainly changed--they mature much earlier--but at the same time traditional social supports for girls' growth and development have collapsed. The media and popular culture exploit girls' normal sensitivity to their changing bodies, and many girls grow up believing that "good looks" --rather than "good works"--represent the highest form of female perfection. With an eye for the humor in as well as the pain of female adolescence, Joan Jacobs Brumberg shows how American girls came to define themselves increasingly through their appearance, so that today the body has become their primary project.

With remarkable insight, Brumberg provides an account of what adolescent girls gained and lost as American women shed the corset and the ideal of virginity for a new world of dieting, sexual freedom, and consumerism. She explains how doctors and parents helped to promote an ideal of physical perfection that underlies the current preoccupation with the body and contributes to many of the social and emotional problems identified by Mary Pipher in Reviving Ophelia and by Carol Gilligan in In a Different Voice.

The Body Project describes the historical roots of the acute societal and psychological pressures that girls feel today, evoking important memories of girl culture as well as milestones of physical and emotional development, such as first periods, pimples, training bras, first dates, and sexual awakening. A vivid photo essay and excerpts from intimate diaries underscore how girls' attitudes toward their bodies and sexuality have changed in the last century. The Body Project is a superb book, gracefully written, filled with understanding, and very relevant to the lives of girls and women today.

Cobble Street Cousins - Special Gifts 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

The "special gift" is this book and the entire series of Cobble Street Cousins. I am the proud mother of four lovely daughters and what a pleasure to find such a sweetly written book. I have recommended this book to friends with daughters and they have loved it as well. It is hard to find a morally appropriate, light, non-violent book for young girls. Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is the type of book all little girls should grow up on.

not-so teen makeup 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

The title of this book is misleading, because when I hear the word "teen," I usually think of pink glitter, sleep over parties, and garish makeup. Apparently that's not what Linda Mason thinks of when she hears the word. The book is well-written, with detailed descriptions of all makeup application techniques and makeup items, and she assumes nothing of the reader. The techniques she demonstrates are useful for everyday wear and perfect for anyone that's had trouble coordinating their eye and lip makeup without looking like a clown. Moreover, Mason includes girls of many races, with different facial structures, hair and eye colors, and recommends makeup techniques for almost all of them. Overall, this book is perfect for teens and adults alike - the only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars is that she sometimes assumes that consumers have more access to professional makeup than they do (she advocates mixing primary colors in addition to using pre-mixed ones, etc). Give this book a try; you won't regret it.

Editorial Review:

Tweens and teens will love this fun, photo-packed guide to makeup from one of the industry's top professionals! Novice users get all the basics they need-tips on tools and application techniques, ways to use color, and steps for basic skin care. More than 35 looks are then grouped by "expression" to represent the many moods of teen girls. Classic, sweet, cool, sporty, retro, glamorous, and outrageous-each mood is made up on five or more real girls with a variety of coloring and face shapes. As readers go through the book, they see each girl transformed with numerous looks. Teens also learn to express their astrological personality, with a color palette and special look for each zodiac sign. Teen Makeup is not about covering up defects or hiding who you are, but about the empowering ways makeup can be used to express your true self.

like the old fashioned ones 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

my mother bought this for a long car trip to the beach and my girls who were both under 6 at the time loved them!!!! a year later they are still playing with them.
something i did to make them more durable was cover all the pieces in clear contact paper. i cut the tabs off and used a small amount of the putty used to hang posters on the wall (look where the pencils & pens are at wal-mart) this way, we did not have to deal w the tabs going behind the long hair like the review before mine talks about.
plus you dont have worry about these getting too close to a computer like the magnetic ones.

Great Size, Modest, Beautiful! 5 out of 5 stars.

I grew up on paperdolls, so I know how fun they can be. I bought these to send to the child we sponser with compassion.com, and it fits in a manilla envelope, is thin, and they will be able to forward it on to her. Also, along those guidelines, the clothing is very modest, even the paperdolls are dressed in nightgowns and such (instead of a binkini or underwear), I believe it should be appropriate for other countries.

It is hard to come up with new ideas to send via mail. Would also be a great idea to send to you niece or granddaughter living in a different state via First Class mail. I was very excited to find such a great product, and at a great price! The dresses are very pretty and there are 4 dolls with multiple outfits in the book. I'm sure any little girl in any country would have fun with this assortment!

Editorial Review:

Cinderella, Snow White, Jasmine, and Belle come to life as four paper dolls, each with outfits that girls will love trying on them. Pretending has never been so fun! And especially for fancy young princesses, the back cover features four cutout bracelets.

A MUST HAVE! 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I want to say right away that if you are looking for a Bible for a young girl from 8-years old and up, this is the one for you.
Inside the pages of this wonderful version of the Bible, girls will enjoy the pure Word of God, and help in many areas of their lives.
This is done in cleaver and interesting ways, for example, questions are asked and answers given for the girls to chose, such as:

If I think something isn't fair, I"
A. Hope God fixes it and try to live with it.
B. Tells someone who has the power to change it.
C. Complain until I'm heard.

Then on the next page the girls are told what Scripture to turn to depending on their answer.Talk about a great way to get girls to dig into the Word. Great idea!

There are also little commentaries here and there to help the girls understand different Scriptures and bring them by example into their own world. Relating to their time helps them grasp Scripture meaning and helps bring the people of the Bible alive.
There is also interaction for friends to do together, little quizzes, questions, journals. The Bible is colorful, alive and inviting, and will definitely help to draw young ones into more Bible reading. Isn't that what it's all about? What a great way to accomplish this feat. I highly recommend this Bible for any young girl, or anyone who likes to interact with the Word. It is excellent, exceptional and a must have.

Editorial Review:

Every girl wants to know she’s totally unique and special. This Bible says that with Faithgirlz!™ sparkle! Now girls can grow closer to God as they discover the journey of a lifetime, in their language, for their world.
