My son loves it! 5 out of 5 stars.

We got this at a rummage sale, and he won't put it down. He's never been a really strong reader, but the main character, Kit, is believable. He likes reading about Cincinnati. He finds it amazing that someone wrote a book about the state he lives in. We have tried just about every book out there to get him to read independently. This is the one book he picks up on his own and reads over and over again.

Meet Kit An American Girl 5 out of 5 stars.

I read the book Kit An American Girl.
This book is great.
You can learn from this book. It tells you how a family works together & It teaches how hard it was to live back in 1934.

I learned some interesting facts.
I learned about the depression. I learned about what you would have to do to live & I learned it was 1934 when the great depression happened.

I would recommend this book for three reasons.
1. It is a fantastic book..
2. It was a true story.
3. This book has so many facts about Kit.

Kit An American Girl is a good book.

Excellent Books 5 out of 5 stars.

Last Christmas, just after she turned 5, my daughter received the present she wanted most--the complete set of Kaya books, her first experience of the American Girls. We began reading them together right away, and she loved them. While the reading level is higher than most of the American Girls books, she had few problems with comprehension as I read the text aloud. She began using many of the Nez Perce words she learned from the story--for some time, her daddy became "Toe-Ta" and I was "Eetsa." Another reviewer complained about the Native American religious beliefs scattered about the text. I found these to be in context for the character (after all, what would one expect given the culture and the time?), and when our faith differs from what is written in the book, it made for some good discussion. Kaya is a character who comes across as real--she makes mistakes, she has doubts, frustrations, and fears. What makes her a great character is that she learns from her mistakes and meets her fears head on with courage. Katie and I look forward to reading more American Girls books together over the years. Our introduction to them has made us eager for more.

To the tiger in the zoo... 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

If you were to walk up to the first person you met on the street and asked, "Are you familiar with the works of Mr. Ludwig Bemelmans?", you would probably get a funny stare. If, however, you were to walk up to another person on the street and said, "In an old house that was covered with vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines", you might still get a funny stare but at least they might be familiar with darling "Madeline". Though its author hasn't received much interest over the years, the Madeline books have garnered a great deal of love from many members of the literary world. And of these, the only Caldecott winner was "Madeline's Rescue".

Just as they do every day, the little girls attending a French boarding school (run by the pleasant nun Miss Clavel) take a walk across the Seine. On one day in particular, however, the feisty Madeline (who beyond her near drowning gets short shift in this book) falls into the river and nearly drowns. Thanks to a plucky mongrel nearby, Madeline lives and the dog is adopted by the school. To the dismay of the students, however, several trustees coming for an annual inspection are chagrined that such a dog (a mixed-breed undoubtedly) would be allowed to live in one of their schools. Genevieve (for such is the dog's name) is cruelly turned out into the streets and it's up to the girls to rescue their faithful pup.

The book is ostensibly for children, but I suspect it is far more loved by Paris-adoring adults. As the little girls search for their doggy they walk about a variety of well known Parisien sights. Here they search amongst the patrons of the trendy Deux Magots. Yonder you can see them in a breathtaking search across Le Pere-Lachaise. I ask you, in what other picture book are you likely to see a full quote on Oscar Wilde's tomb (not to mention nods to Chopin, Moliere, Balzac, and more)? Bemelmans has a lovely lilting ear for his own prose as well. Just consider the line...

"Miss Genevieve, noblest dog in France,
You shall have your VEN-GE-ANCE!"

You just can't beat it. On top of that are some wonderful illustrations. Though most of the book is black on white with yellow, there is always the occasional full page spread that is deftly colored in deep greens and dark blues. On the whole, there is much to love in this book. Beloved for more than fifty years now, it shall continue to be just as loved for centuries to come.

Editorial Review:

The lively adventures of the twelve famous little girls and Genevieve the dog take readers once more to Bemelmans' unique and delightful Paris. A Caldecott Award Book. Full-color illustrations.

Angieville: CYBELE'S SECRET 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

CYBELE'S SECRET is the sequel to Wildwood Dancing--Juliet Marillier's first young adult novel. I have been a huge Marillier fan ever since picking up her first novel, Daughter of the Forest (The Sevenwaters Trilogy, Book 1), to take with me on a trip to Italy. The wonderful thing about Marillier is that her sequels are always as good as, if not better than, her first books. So even though I liked Wildwood Dancing well enough (it didn't wow me), I was really looking forward to CYBELE'S SECRET to see where she took her characters and what peril they got themselves into.

The story follows Paula, the next to youngest of the five Brasov girls, and the one most noted for her scholarly bent and lack of interest in pretty much all things mundane. Fluent in both Greek and Latin, Paula accompanies her merchant father on a trip to Istanbul to serve as his assistant in his attempt to acquire a most unusual, legendary artifact known as Cybele's Gift. The artifact is a remnant of a long dead pagan cult and is said to bestow upon its owner fortune and blessings untold. Once in Istanbul, Paula's father finds he is just one of several merchants set on purchasing Cybele's Gift. Shadowed closely by her Bulgar bodyguard Stoyan, Paula puts her wits to work ferreting out the history behind the artifact and just why potential buyers keep turning up dead or fleeing town without explanation. Oh, and there's also a dashing pirate and adventure on the high seas.

I enjoyed this sequel quite a bit more than its predecessor. That may have been because I related more to Paula and her struggle to stretch beyond the comfortable boundaries of her introverted nature. I also loved the setting in Istanbul. Marillier's research and immersion in her chosen locale is always evident in her stories and it particularly shone in this one. The twisty markets, the call to prayer, the artfully layered clothing swept me up along with Paula, Duarte, and Stoyan. Though some outcomes were fairly predictable, I always appreciate the loyalty Marillier's characters show one another. Even in the face of extreme doubt and fear. The good, the bad, the gray in between characters are each depicted with their individual virtues and vices and forced to move outside their accustomed circles. No one is perfect and everyone has their less-than-admirable moments as well as their moments when they prove themselves more than they seem. In short, they are all so human. And that's what brings me back to her books over and over again.

Editorial Review:

FOR PAULA, ACCOMPANYING her merchant father on a trading voyage to Istanbul is a dream come true. They have come to this city of trade on a special mission to purchase a most rare artifact—a gift from the ancient goddess, Cybele, to her followers. It’s the only remnant of a lost, pagan cult.

But no sooner have they arrived when it becomes clear they may be playing at a dangerous game. A colleague and friend of Paula’s father is found murdered. There are rumors of Cybele’s cult reviving within the very walls of Istanbul. And most telling of all, signs have begun to appear to Paula, urging her to unlock Cybele’s secret.

Meanwhile, Paula doesn’t know who she can trust in Istanbul, and finds herself drawn to two very different men. As time begins to run out, Paula realizes they may all be tied up in the destiny of Cybele’s Gift, and she must solve the puzzle before unknown but deadly enemies catch up to her. . . .

Landry News Review by Travis Johnson 4 out of 5 stars.

I think this is a good book for 4th-6th graders. I didn't think that this was a hard story to read. Any kid that can get their hands on it should. This is a good story because it has an interesting problem. The book had a lot of characters, so that made it fun to read. Read This Book!

A Kid's Reveiw 3 out of 5 stars.

I think The Landry News is a truly inspiring story. For instance, when Mr. Larson knew that there was a possibility he could get fired instead of panicking he just started teaching and turned the emotional stir into a journalism unit for his class. The Landry News is one of the best kids books I have ever read! It just feels like you are going through the whole adventure with Cara and Mr. Larson. I think Andrew Clements has an amazing way of grasping the thoughts that go on in kid's heads during school. This story is a great one to read and if you have the opportunity you should definitely read it. I reccomend this book for anyone else who is interested in reading thr Landry News.

Anne of Green Gables 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

"I hate you! I hate you - I hate you!"
"How dare you call me skinny and ugly? How dare you say I'm freckled and red-headed? You are a rude, impolite, unfeeling woman!" said Anne Shirley to Mrs. Rachel Lynd, the town's busybody, one day in a village called Avonlea.

Anne is an imaginative, overly dramatic girl of eleven, who has just been adopted by Marilla Cuthbert, an old lonely woman, and her kind brother, Mathew Cuthbert. Anne of Green Gables is set on Prince Edward's Island in Canada.

I enjoyed the book because of the humour tied in with the story, and how well I got to know the characters because of the wonderful character descriptions. Overall, I would highly recommend this book as both a gift idea and for reading yourself!

A great book!!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

What do you get when you combine a redheaded girl, a firey temper, and a wonderful imagination? Anne Shirley, from L.M. Montgomery's book, Anne of Green Gables! It's a great book set in the 1880's, in a little Canadian town called Avonlea. Anne gets into many problems, like when a boy teased her, and she in turn took her slate and hit him over the head with it, or the time when she accidentally intoxicated her best friend Diana at a tea party. All in all, it's a great book, because of the lively friendly character, Anne. If you like using your imagination, but it sometimes gets you in trouble, you should read this book!

Could have been better 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It was a good story, but it had some problems. First of all, none of the characters were really likeable.

On top of all that, I found Maureen's writing to be pretty bland. I mean, Ginny is on this crazy adventure around Europe, but the whole thing lacked any excitement. She could have been describing her math homework, for all the enthusiasm the girl had.

It wasn't terrible though, and if nothing else it made me really want to go back to Europe and just bum around for a few months, just to remind myself that it is actually a pretty exciting thing to do.

Editorial Review:

Inside little blue envelope 1 are $1,000 and instructions to buy a plane ticket.

In envelope 2 are directions to a specific London flat.

The note in envelope 3 tells Ginny: Find a starving artist.

Because of envelope 4, Ginny and a playwright/thief/ bloke–about–town called Keith go to Scotland together, with somewhat disastrous–though utterly romantic–results. But will she ever see him again?

Everything about Ginny will change this summer, and it's all because of the 13 little blue envelopes.

Best yet 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

Kaitlin Burke is back to spill more secrets about her life as one of Hollywood's hottest young stars. Filming for "Pretty Young Assassins" has wrapped up and Kaitlin's back on the set of "Family Affair". But this time, there's an even bigger problem than co-star Sky Mackenzie. There's a new girl on set, Alexis Holden. Everyone seems to love the new star, all except Sky and Kaitlin, who are convinced Alexis is out to destroy their careers.

I enjoyed the first two books in this series, but this is by far my favorite and I couldn't stop reading it. Kaitlin is such a great character. She's likable and realistic. She's not spoiled and despite being a celebrity, she's facing normal problems, like driver's education and deciding what she wants her future to be, something all teens can relate to. Kaitlin's just another teenager, despite starring in a popular TV show, and she wants the world to know she's more than just a popular actress.

I also really liked seeing Sky in a position other than Kaitlin's nemesis. In the first two books, this rather two-dimensional portrayal of Sky annoyed me, but in this book, we see another side to the girl and if she's not exactly likable, she's understandable. The other characters are entertaining as well, though not especially nuanced. I enjoyed the writing in this book; Kaitlin's voice is strong and friendly, and the references to designers and other celebrities are nicely worked in. I also loved the script excerpts and tabloid articles that were interspersed within the narrative.

Basically, I loved this book. It was just what I needed after two AP tests. It's fun and cute and CLEAN. Hallelujah that there's a young adult series with a moral standard. This entire series is definitely worth reading.

Editorial Review:

The filming for sure-to-be-blockbuster movie Pretty Young Assassins has wrapped, and teen movie star Kaitlin Burke returns to life on the set of primetime drama Family Affair. After ten seasons filming, she would have thought that she could see it all coming, but with a plotting new actress on set, all bets are off. The new diva, Alexis, makes even Sky seem like a puppy in comparison. Can Kaitlin keep her sane boyfriend, her insane job, and her composure in the face of this new star power?

parents beware! 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book deceptively makes you think it is for kids 10-12 years of age, but when my daughter asked me to clarify what she was reading- I was shocked!!
It explains in detail several inappropriate and vulgar things, having to do with a boy's sexuality. It is totally unacceptable material for this age group, and I'm shocked that there isn't a warning for parents. This book should be titled "Fifteen" for it is definitely not for anyone younger than that--do not buy this book, which anyway my daughter said was BORING!

Editorial Review:

Eleven was big. Winnie got a new best friend, and a new worst friend. But twelve is going to be huge. Last year everyone else changed, but now it’s Winnie’s turn to “develop.” Ack! Twelve is going to be a big year for Winnie, she just knows it. After all, she’s one step closer to being a teenager, but there’s just so much to deal with: pierced ears, sleepaway camp, junior high. . . .Can Winnie handle the pressure? And most important, can she handle bra shopping with Mom—in public?
