Fun, Fast-Paced Buffy Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I didn't read this one until now, even though it's been out a while. I'm trying to catch up on Buffy reading, since I'm sort of new (just two years) to the Buffy universe and want to catch all I can, on t.v. and off! This book is great! The characters in this book are just like they should be, full of fun, quirkiness, curiosity, courage, and determination. I love their quips and their quarrels even as the danger grows around town. I think the Muses (wow, were they irritating and nasty!) as antagonists are a great idea (I see that was used later in the show), and it sure does put up a major problem. How does Buffy kill creatures who cannot die? I've read at least 15 Buffy novels so far and this is a favorite. I hope Massie does more.

Editorial Review:

When the female population of Sunnydale starts strutting its girl power, the push for gender equality seems like a normal expression of '90s feminism. After all, a girl trying out for the football team isn't usually a sign of imminent danger. But when the guys start acting like powerless pawns and a few even turn up dead, Buffy Summers notices that the local womyn's movement has reached a feverish -- and probably unnatural -- pitch.

The Slayer is the only one who can see straight during the ultimate battle of the sexes. Her friends -- including Giles -- are spellbound by the malignant muses permeating the school. Even the local vampires are acting strange. Alone in her search for answers, Buffy must figure out who's behind the sinister sisterhood...and close the gender gap before the feminist revolution goes too far.

Editorial Review:

Blood Revenge

Angelique and Barnabas. Lovers once upon a time, through treachery and deceit they have now become immortal enemies. To pay for her jealousy that left Barnabas damned to feast on the blood of humans, Angelique has been banished to the netherworld. Meanwhile, Barnabas lives a lie, carefully guarding his hellish secret from the unsuspecting mortals with whom he lives -- including Victoria Winters, the ethereally beautiful governess to the Collins family.

Determined to escape her dark imprisonment, Angelique conjures a diabolical plan that will make her flesh again. Using her psychic powers, she will send another vampire to destroy Barnabas, completely. But as she will soon discover, the powers of darkness will find their match in the burning light of innocence . . . and love.

Vividly imagined, grippingly written, each Dark Shadows novel is filled with the eroticism, supernatural suspense, and spellbinding storytelling that has made this classic daytime serial a timeless hit.

Massie puts the Fun back in Dysfunctional 5 out of 5 stars.

A friend of mine turned me onto Elizabeth Massie and now I can't chew up enough of the tasty stories she has to dish out, served tenderly on broken shards of glass. Massie is a horror writer that uses humans as her monsters, and the human mind as the instigator.

This lovely book of short stories starts off with `I Am Not My Smell', a truly grotesque tale of a homeless woman accidentally injured, and tells of what extent a sick mind will go to in order to find relief. If you make it through this story, you're going to love the rest.

There are seventeen tales of twisted minds and darkened dreams, easy to read and hard to put down, that will leave you shuddering at night under the feeble light of your lamp, wondering what kind of humans walk through the night outside your own doors.

Some of my favorites are `Assault', where a family cowers together in order to stay away from prying government eyes (bit of a surprise here). `What Happened When Mobsy Paulsen Had Her Painting Reproduced On The Cover Of The Phone Book', a tale of strange and twisted jealousy. `No Solicitors, Curious A Quarter', a ripe tale of familial caring and secret desire. `Meat', a tale of family independence. `Crow, Cat, Cow, Child', a frightening psychological study into Animal Rights Activism, and `Shadow Of The Valley', a blistering look at a cruel prison guard and an innocent man.

There's more tales to smack your lips over though, and Massie's easy writing style makes this book of shorts a great beach or travel book, or just something to curl up next to kitty with. Highly recommended. Enjoy!

Editorial Review:

This grim, claustral story is about the consequences of a primitive form of Christianity practiced in the mountains of Virginia, the author's home state. The sineater is a man shunned by all, a man whose face should never be seen. He performs the valuable service of absorbing all the sins of each person who dies, by eating ritual food laid out on their corpses. When the sineater's son, Joel, is allowed to attend school, a series of violent omens convinces the fanatic locals that God is punishing them and that Judgment Day is nigh. As Joel searches for the real perpetrator of the crimes, along with other adolescents who reluctantly listen to him, the plot (the weakest part of the book) begins to resemble a wandering sort of whodunit. The focus of the novel, though, is on the well-evoked mood of fear and despair. Elizabeth Massie works her horror effects with an intimate approach, closing in on her characters as if she's trapping them. And her descriptions do justice to the rustic setting, where people live in four-room cabins and honeysuckle winds around the knotty rails of the fences.

Sineater won a Bram Stoker Award for First Novel in 1993. Massie also won a Stoker for her novella "Stephen," published in the first Borderlands anthology. As Tom Monteleone writes in Borderlands 3, Massie wields "a subtle power that rips at your emotions with velvet claws." --Fiona Webster

Great Read! 5 out of 5 stars.

What a wonderfully scary, disturbing, yet emotionally satisfying book! This has all a good horror novel needs - atmosphere, an increasingly terrifying situation, characters you can root for and care about, a hideous bad guy, and lots of surprises. I disagree with one viewer who said it was just sick; this book is certainly about sick things, but it is also about three characters who try to come to terms with the bad things in their community and what they can or can't do about them. Highly recommended.

Highly Recommended! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a graphic, terrifying story of a small town, a family, and the evil around them, which some family members choose to ignore while others are forced to face it head on. I didn't want to put the book down, but had to so I could go to work and eat! Massie is a master of character and plot. Very satisfying read. Highly recommended!

A "stunner" of a book 5 out of 5 stars.

Horror or Thrillers just don't get any better than this. Elizabeth Massie's novel has the intelligence, the grace and the emotional impact of Robert McCammon's best work, the mystery and razor sharp thrills of Koontz' best, the chills and the superb storytelling of King's finest.....all rolled into one package ! If that isn't good enough, she also has the ability to surprise and shock the reader....and I'm talking "jaw on the floor" surprises and shocks. For me, a long ago, jaded horror fan whom mostly yawns at the newer stuff, that is a most welcomed gift. Elizabeth Massie will stir your intellect as many times as she will rattle your bones.....and it happens all throughout the novel. I give Welcome Back to the Night the highest of recommendations to all horror readers. Like my heading states, it's a "stunner of a book."

Right off the bat (err cat) this anthology was meant to entertain both young and old. The cat lovers in the world will enjoy curling up in a comfortable corner with this one. Check out 'Arlo' that one is mine.

Ms Schrader put together some nice works by some very good writers.
