Much better than the 2004 film! 4 out of 5 stars.

(I am 14 years old) The Phantom of the Opera in the Modern Library version was much better than the 2004 film. I loved the film but then I wanted more so I read this. Gaston Leroux characterizes the Erik (The Phantom) so differently from the Don Juan-ish charcter in the film. Erik is just searching and longing for someone to love him as himself, he's not overly lustful or seducing as in the movie. He also isn't attractive beyond his face, but more described by some as a "living corpse." This new idea about Erik made my parents approve of the book more than the movie (they haven't read the book but they said that Erik was too "creepy" in the movie). I love how Leroux tells it as almost a documentary or a report, I haven't read a book told like that before. Although it seems that it would be so much more descriptive and attention holding if he told it as if he were there. Nonetheless I am very satisfied with this book and I will re-read it in the future! I highly recommend this book to adventure/love/suspense/not-so-gruesome horror story lovers! Enjoy!

Editorial Review:

Erik has the voice of an angel, but the face of a monster. When he takes off his mask, people scream and run away. So he hides himself away in the darkness below an opera house. There, he falls in love with a beautiful singer. But will she be able to return his love?

Editorial Review:

Bubbling potions can be bad for your health!  Just ask Dr. Jekyll.  By day, he's a kind doctor.  But by night, he's the merciless kill Mr. Hyde.  And all because of a magic formula.  Will anybody find out the horrible secret of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?

Scary enough to entertain but without causing nightmares 5 out of 5 stars.

This is my 1st Grader's favorite book at the moment. He literally begs to read it every night! It's easy enough for the average 1st-2nd Grader to read with a little bit of help. The story is very entertaining and involves a younger child getting even with an older brother who is always trying to trick him out of his money. The illustrations are great and the story is long enough to be challenging to a child but short enough to be read by a parent in under 10 minutes. This book can be tremendously motivating to a child who loves scary stuff but generally dislikes reading. We also own and enjoy "CreepShow" which is part of the same series.

A great book for a camping trip, slumber party or Halloween party!

Editorial Review:

Beginning readers will find just the right amount of funny thrills and chills in this easy-readers book featuring big type, simple sentences and full-color illustrations. Jake knows his big brother, Henry, is up to something when he pays to take Jake to see a movie called The Mummy's Gold. So when a mummy shows up and asks for all of Jake's money, he's sure it's just one of Henry's pranks--or is it? Full color.
