A GREAT READ 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Dear reader, I suggest you sit down with a cup of tea and get cozy --- this is the kind of read that will inspire you to make changes that will support and sustain as you move through life. Well done, Sarah. You've presented a very important, inspirational road map, especially for baby boomer women who are getting ready to clear out and move forward. Pamela D. Blair, Author, The Next Fifty Years: A Guide for Women at Mid-Life And Beyond

Editorial Review:

Building on the success of Sarah’s previous books, Moving On expresses a new-age inclusiveness that allows people of all faiths and belief systems to enjoy her positive outlook on life.

Inspired by her own life experiences and requested by avid Ban Breathnach readers eager for another volume, Sarah helps readers to understand themselves and to use those insights to create a home that truly suits their spirits and their lives.

"We do not know how to move on," Sarah observes. "We have learned to let go, but not move on." This keen insight differentiates this book from other self-help books dealing with life changes.

Sarah helps readers cope with what she calls, "the myriad demands of uprooting one’s life," and teaches them to not only move, but to finally create what she calls, "your own house of belonging."

Like the other books in Sarah’s acclaimed Simple Abundance series, Moving On is what Sarah calls "part meditation, how-to-manual, and memoir."

Great book for understand your empathy 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Some of things are long winded and not all that well explained, such as some of the exercises. I got the impression that you sort of had to understand things a bit more to really get use out of some of the exercises. Unfortunately, shutting it off and turning it back on isn't quite as simple as she'd have you believe. My empathy is very ingrained in me and I still have trouble doing it without the aid of my guides, and I'm far more advanced now. BUT... it is a wonderful book for beginning to understand more about a latent gift I didn't realize I had.

Editorial Review:

Excellent concept, difficult to apply 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The book concept is great. But in actuality, trying to apply this is really hard. If each one of us could wait to respond to provoking situations, and really think about how to respond in a kind and compassionate, non-provoking manner, and then teach our children, friends and family the same method, wow! what potential for peace! The book is very short and easy to read. I would like to have the author narrate how in specific situations this actually works. She does, but personally I need more help than this small book to really catch on. I will probably look into another book by this author in hopes of finding more on this subject.

Editorial Review:

With war and violence flaring all over the world, many of us are left feeling vulnerable and utterly helpless. In this book Pema Chödrön draws on Buddhist teachings to explore the origins of aggression, hatred, and war, explaining that they lie nowhere but within our own hearts and minds. She goes on to explain that the way in which we as individuals respond to challenges in our everyday lives can either perpetuate a culture of violence or create a new culture of compassion.

"War and peace begin in the hearts of individuals," declares Pema Chödrön at the opening of this inspiring and accessible book. She goes on to offer practical techniques any of us can use to work for peace in our own lives, at the level of our habits of thought and action. It's never too late, she tells us, to look within and discover a new way of living and transform not only our personal lives but our whole world.

A comfort 4 out of 5 stars.

This book was so comforting to read. I bought it for myself, but I think it would be a great gift for someone going through a loss of someone close to them. The book doesn't make judgements, it just talks about real life people experiencing life and beyond.

Yawn 2 out of 5 stars.

Both books of hers are OK, I guess. It seemed to me that both books pretty much stated the same stuff, nothing different. I was looking forward to more on the scene stories.....oh well, she was great on CTC....

Forever Ours 5 out of 5 stars.

As soon as we are born, we are all on a path towards death. It's the one great certainty. We don't know for sure if we are going to find love, get a great job, or have children but we know unequivocally that we all will die. With that said, death is generally something that both fascinates us and causes great anxiety. Despite that everyone has an opinion, no one knows for sure what happens after this life is over. Death is probably the world's greatest mystery.

Forever Ours looks at death from an interesting perspective. The author is a forensic pathologist. Part of her job is to talk to the deceased person's relatives and give them information about the cause of death. The author seems like a very caring, empathetic individual who realizes that how she handles each situation is far more important that simply getting a job done. I think it is for this reason that so many patients, relatives, and colleagues have opened up to her about their experiences: about living, about death, about life after death, and about life after the death of a loved one.

Forever Ours is a very insightful book that I would highly recommend to everyone.

Editorial Review:

This book is a love letter to the world from those who have shared their stories of love, compassion and understanding following the death of a loved one. Their collective wisdom is life affirming, gently comforting, and a reminder to live full-out and love with all our hearts.

Editorial Review:

Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Ph.D., the internationally known poet, psychoanalyst, and author of the seminal classic Women Who Run With The Wolves (99 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, translated into eighteen languages, and a bestseller worldwide), touches our lives anew, rendering in the strong and lyrical voice for which she has become known a powerful series of her signature healing stories.

These elegantly interlocked tales of loss, survival, and fierce rebirth center around Dr. Estes's uncle, a war-ravaged Hungarian peasant farmer and refugee, a faithful gardener, and a storehouse of stories who was one of the "dancing fools, wise old crows, grumpy sages, and 'almost saints' who made up the old people" in Estés's childhood.

Told with graceful simplicity, deep feeling, generous humor, and profound optimism, The Faithful Gardener is, at its captivating core, the story of an open-hearted child who listened well to her old-country elders and who grew up to remember, to bear witness, and, as one of the premier storytellers of our times, to remind readers and listeners of all ages of "that magisterial life force within all things that strengthens us in times of turmoil or transition, that faithful force which can never die."

A Book About Pulling Weeds in Your Yard -- and in Your Spiritual Approach to a Better Life 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Geri Larkin's life has taken her from the heights of American business to the simplicity of Buddhist practice. She began her career as a jet-setting business consultant -- and is ending it as a sort of free-lance teacher and landscape consultant living in a tiny home in the Pacific Northwest.

In fact, in this new book she writes that when she volunteers at an emergency food bank -- it's impossible to tell her and the other folks running the program from the clients in need of the emergency food.

It's a wonderful journey, which Geri has laid out for readers in a series of books that are half spiritual memoir and half Zen advice about everything from personal relations to -- in this new book -- cooking up the dandelions you've pulled from your front yard.

Around the time her previous book, "The Chocolate Cake Sutra," was published, I invited a group of high school students to spend time interviewing Geri for a documentary film on prayer and meditation. Geri was heading back to southeast Michigan for a few days from her new home in the Pacific Northwest, and I told the students that the cost of a seat with Geri was reading her book.

If you know anything about the busy lives of teenagers, the idea of reading a book on Buddhism sounds like an impossible challenge. But, on the day of the interview, an eager little crowd of students pulled couches up around Geri's own easy chair. They pulled out these beautifully well-thumbed copies of her book -- their pages sprouting bookmarks, sticky notes and slips of paper with questions scribbled to ask Geri.

That's the best way I can convey the excitement of her spiritual voice. It can hook and hold a busy teenager -- or a busy middle-aged writer like myself.

These are books not to be missed, because they leave you with a hopeful smile on your face -- and a fistful of good ideas to make sure that smile is shared with someone else.

They're great for small groups -- easy reading, but deep provocative wisdom in each chapter.

Editorial Review:

Gardens have often been used as metaphors for spiritual nurturing and growth. Zen rock gardens, monastery rose gardens, even your grandmother's vegetable garden all have been described as places of refuge and reflection. Drawing on her experience working at Seattle's premier gardening center, Zen teacher Geri Larkin shows how the act of gardening can help you uncover your inner creativity, enthusiasm, vigilance, and joy. As your garden grows, so will your spirit.

Larkin takes you through the steps of planning, planting, nurturing, and maintaining a garden while offering funny stories and inspiring lessons on what plants can teach us about our lives. As soothing as a bowl of homemade vegetable soup, Plant Seed, Pull Weed will entertain, charm, and inspire you to get your hands dirty and dig deep to cultivate your inner self.
