Editorial Review:

“Nature’s quintessential color combination of blue and white never ceases to amaze me. The look of pristine snow against deep blue Aspen skies; spires of blue and white delphinium in a garden; Connecticut’s spring mornings where the apple blossoms and nodding heads of white narcissus are in contrast to soft blue skies and vibrant green grass—these and many more images found in nature have informed my work for the last thirty-five years. From fashion to interiors, and tabletop to gardens, the presence of blue and white is a constant in my past collections as well as throughout my previous eight books. It seems natural that I would eventually do a book on living and designing with this seminal color combination.”
—from the Introduction

This private tour of the dazzling homes of legendary style-setter Carolyne Roehm showcases her favorite color combination in more than three hundred glorious photographs.

From the time designer Carolyne Roehm rented her first small apartment in New York in her twenties, she has loved blue and white. In that one-bedroom flat, she draped the walls, chairs, sofa, and a canopy bed in an inexpensive blue and white sheeting fabric designed by her boss, Oscar de la Renta, and began collecting blue-and-white porcelain from around the world—initially bargain reproductions and eventually museum-quality pieces—from China, Japan, Portugal, the Netherlands, and elsewhere.

Today, Carolyne Roehm presides over a magnificent duplex in Manhattan, an antique-filled stone house in Connecticut, and a chic yet rustic home in Aspen, all of which contain rooms decorated in blue and white, featuring accents from her collections of china, ceramics, glassware, linens, furniture, and decorative pieces. These rooms employ the whole spectrum of blues, from delicate sky to the deepest, boldest navy, evoking moods ranging from tranquil to vibrant.

In A Passion for Blue and White, Carolyne Roehm takes us inside her homes (including her former pied-à-terre in Paris) in never-before-seen photographs of these stunning rooms. She also reveals how she has used blue and white to magnificent effect outdoors in Connecticut around her pool and in her gardens—and even how she used the combination in designing a wedding for a friend.

She provides inspiration for tabletop design, flower arranging, and gift-wrapping, suitable for all budgets. Her ceramic, textile, and glass collections (endless sources of her creativity) can be emulated by anyone with trips to flea markets, thrift shops, and inexpensive import stores as well as antique stores and galleries.

A swatch of French fabric began Carolyne Roehm’s lifetime love affair with blue and white. In this book, she demonstrates through her own decorating and designs, how this combination works its magic on everything from upholstery and drapes to napkins and tablecloths, wrapping paper and ribbons. For anyone with a passion for blue and white, here is the ultimate style guide and Carolyne Roehm’s most gorgeous book yet.

Editorial Review:

Nothing lights up a room like flowers. Whether it's baby's breath draped on a table at a wedding reception, clusters of daffodils in small pots scattered throughout a living room or a bucket of sunflowers on a picnic table, a strategically placed bouquet has the power to create a mood and make us feel special. Unfortunately, most of us don't know how to display flowers properly, and they often end up clumsily thrown together in a vase.

In A Passion for Flowers, Carolyne Roehm teaches readers how to create arrangements that set off a flower's natural beauty. She discusses the overall features of dozens of the most popular flowers and helps readers understand how these elements relate to each other. Though the book is filled with ideas for brightening holidays and special occasions, Roehm stresses that the magic of flowers should be enjoyed year-round. Organized by season to profile the blossoms as they come into their glory, bouquet "recipes" with step-by-step instructions are sprinkled throughout along with special care instructions for more sensitive blooms. Sections detailing containers, conditioning flowers and elements of floral design are included at the end of the book. A Passion for Flowers features 250 breathtaking photographs and is a treasure trove of knowledge and inspiration that will help readers stop and smell the roses every day.

Editorial Review:

A domestic dervish whose Summer Notebook and Fall Notebook skillfully blended seasonal advice on gardening, entertaining, and crafting, Carolyne Roehm now turns her thoughts to winter in this, the third installment in the series. Believing that "winter is the most encouraging season for the gardener ... the only time of the year when the creative juices of the plantsman are given free reign," Roehm offers expert information on a wide variety of horticultural activities suitable for the season, including forcing bulbs and branches, growing and arranging hardy hellebores, and creating a winter-garden checklist.

Not to be outdone are the holidays, namely Christmas, New Year's and Valentine's Day, which Roehm illustrates down to the finest detail. From delectable meals and to-die-for decorations to vibrant floral arrangements and millennial good-luck gifts, everything one needs to plan and execute the finest of gatherings is covered, complete with clear recipes and instructions. Full-color photographs accompany Roehm's musings, along with pockets for storing ideas and "additional notes/inspirations/remember next year" lists for recording personal thoughts, making the Winter Notebook ideal for organizing one of the busiest seasons of the year. --Stefanie Hargreaves

Editorial Review:

Combining lovely scrapbook pages with a wealth of inspiration, recipes, and design suggestions, the Spring Notebook from Carolyne Roehm is the last seasonal title in her series. With a gorgeous matte cover disguising a practical spiral binding, you can refer to this frequently, and for years to come, without affecting its sturdiness one bit.

Separate areas focus on individual types of blooms--all the spring classics are here, including daffodils, tulips, pansies, and peonies. Discussion is mainly about the arranging and choosing of plants--for details on such practicalities as pest control or bulb rot, look elsewhere. Even a few favorite seasonal edibles are addressed--recipes for rhubarb, strawberries, and asparagus will have your mouth watering, and most, such as simple Rhubarb Bread, are straightforward and without a lot of extra steps. In all sections, the photographs are lush and light-filled, and seem evenly mixed between close-ups full of incredible detail and larger shots that provide a sense of a plant's overall effect in a garden. Detailed lists of possible plant choices are given for each category, limited to the author's favorites from her own gardens--with 3,000 tulips in the world to choose from, you'll be glad for the restraint Roehm shows in including only 62. A delightful way of containing all of spring's bounty into one book, this scrapbook will provide you with one special place for keeping your ideas, notes, and memories of the season. --Jill Lightner

Editorial Review:

Good intentions tend to bloom and fade like a perennial: next year, you'll dig up the border by the front walk and install those delphiniums you've always wanted; next year, you'll put up those abundant tomatoes so you can savor them during the depths of winter. To realize those good intentions, try organizing them with fashion designer and author Carolyne Roehm's Summer Notebook. Or, if your creative fields lie fallow once in a while (and whose don't?), borrow the seed of an idea from Roehm, who broadcasts her favorites for everyone's benefit.

This is a notebook (complete with grid paper for planning, lined pages for notes, and pouches for clippings), garden-design and flower color-combination guide, garden journal, recipe book--in essence, it's an idea book, a place to record your ideas and learn from Roehm's. The grounds of her Connecticut home, Weatherstone, serve as the canvas for her botanical muse. In the course of showing off her gardening victories, as well as admitting to her failures, we get chapters on Roehm's potager, inspired by Louis XIV's geometrically laid-out kitchen garden at Versailles; her quest for the perfect perennial border; the extreme state of her hydrangea envy and rose obsession; details of a Fourth of July celebration and a summer wedding held at Weatherstone; odes to peaches, corn, and tomatoes; and an "end paper" on the dread Japanese beetle.

All this, along with abundant color photos, recipes, floral-arrangement tips, and helpful hints like how to make your own floral preservative, make this inaugural installment in the Notebook series (Fall is next, of course) a unique addition to any avid gardener's library. --Stefanie Durbin

Editorial Review:

"Autumn is a season that lures us indoors, and shifts our focus from the garden, the pool, or the beach to the home." The magic and mystique of the fall season are splendidly captured in Carolyn Roehm's Fall Notebook: Garden, Hearth, Tradition, Home, a collection of recipes, crafts, entertainment tips, and garden projects. In her introduction to the book, Roehm--former fashion designer turned author--writes,
As a gardener, I feel a certain sadness as I am forced to break a bond that I have spent the spring and summer nurturing. Although it is easy for one to become nostalgic during this time, it is necessary to move forward because it is crucial to prepare for the long winter that lies ahead ... although those beautiful blooms are a long way off and we must put our garden to bed, we shift to a new buzz of life that is brought about by the gathering of family and friends under one roof for the holidays.

Arranged by individual plants--dahlias and chrysanthemums can be counted on for their late-fall showiness--as well as specific projects and festivities, including Halloween, bulb planting, and Thanksgiving, each chapter offers a host of ideas for savoring autumn's flavor through arts and crafts projects, practical gardening tips, succulent recipes, and creative entertaining advice. Celebrate Turkey day in style with elegant place cards--easily created with a rubber stamp and ecru stationary--that compliment lemon leaf, eucalyptus berry, and autumn-hued rose table arrangements, while a menu of poisson with rosemary and sage, potato and parsnip purée, and pumpkin soufflé--all clearly spelled out in Roehm's meticulous recipes--would make any family thankful. With full-color photographs, pockets for storing ideas and graph paper for planning--not to mention useful lists to help you organize events and gardening chores--the Fall Notebook is as glorious to look at as it is practical to use.

A seasonal cookbook with a lot of flowers. Not much design help whatsoever. Not what I wanted

Beautiful and a good read too! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Of all the Carolyne Roehm books, this set is my favorite. It had some practical gardening tips as well as the flower arrangements and recipes. If you are expecting a gardening "how to" book, this is not the one. However, the books are beautiful and I enjoyed each one. It gave me many ideas for my own home. I will never have a budget that allows me to purchase 12 dozen roses for one display, however, many of her ideas can be implemented on a smaller scale with less expensive florals. The color combinations were inspiring as well as the examples of matching floral displays to the surroundings. If you love flowers and beautiful table scapes, you will love this book.
