About Twins 5 out of 5 stars.

It is a charming book with beautiful photo illustrations. It carries a very simple but important message that even very young children can enjoy. It is my very favorite picture book about twins.

Mom of Twins 5 out of 5 stars.

I have given this book to both the preschool and kindergarten classes of my twin boys on their birthdays. Their teachers appreciate this book with great photos and captions. Many schools suggest sharing books rather than treats on special days. This book helps classmates look at twins as individuals and not a matched set, answers common questions, and opens discussions of single vs twins, and siblings vs twins.

Editorial Review:

An imaginative (and imaginatively designed) book on a perennially popular topic.

Some twins look alike. Some don't. Sometimes both are boys. Sometimes both are girls. Sometimes there's one of each. It's special to be a twin. Elegant photos plus simple, insightful text make About Twins the only book that lets young readers enter the close-knit world of twins. Real quotes from real twins plus a note from a parent and an introduction from co-author Sheila M. Kelly make this an ideal book for anyone who is a twin--or has ever wished to be one.

This book is a lifesaver 5 out of 5 stars.

Katrina and Louise have written THE BIBLE for parents of twins and their friends and families. It begins with emotional reactions on finding out you're having two babies, takes you through a twin pregnancy, birth and those difficult early months with great medical advice and a good dose of humour. They interviewed 34 families with twins and have covered every aspect I could think of. From sibling reactions to marriage on the rocks and post natal depression. The design makes it easy to flick through and find the information you're after.

Editorial Review:

This user-friendly guide explains how to prepare—emotionally and physically—for having and parenting more than one child. Based on extensive research as well as various parents' experiences of twin pregnancies, births, and toddlers, it offers sound advice from both medical and practical points of view. Detailed information and clear explanations of medical jargon are peppered with amusing and moving stories of catastrophe, chaos, and coping. From getting organized to breast feeding, and from finding time to sleep to toddler-proofing cupboards, this handbook offers useful advice for the new parents of twins or triplets.

Editorial Review:

A leading expert on twins delves into the stories behind her research to reveal the profound joys and real-life traumas of twelve remarkable sets of twins, triplets, and quadruplets.

Indivisible by Two introduces us to an assortment of memorable characters, from the "Fireman Twins"--brothers who, though reared separately, are astonishingly similar in personality and behavioral traits--to the twin sisters who overcame one twin's infertility by having the other serve as her surrogate mother. We meet one of the few identical brother-sister pairs in the world after one of two sisters was surgically transformed into a man, and identical triplet brothers, only one of whom is gay while the others are straight. We see uniquely blended families--identical twin brothers marrying identical twin sisters, and Chinese twins adopted by different Canadian families yet raised as sisters.

Being a twin can also render the experience of historical tragedy uniquely painful. We meet Stepha and Annetta, survivors of Josef Mengele's heinous experiments in Auschwitz, and untangle the troubled lifelong tie between Jack and Oskar, born in the 1930s to a Jewish father and a German Gentile mother, one raised as a Jew in Trinidad and the other as a Catholic and a member of the Hitler Youth in Nazi Germany.

Segal unravels these stories and others with an eye for the challenges that life as a twin (or triplet or quadruplet) can pose to parents, friends, and spouses, as well as the twins themselves. These moving stories remind us how incompletely any theory explains real life--twin or not.

Outdated, pessimistic views abound. 2 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book about a year ago while I was 5 months pregnant with my twin boys. Immediately I discovered that many of the views were a bit outdated. It is very evident that it was written before twins and multiples were as common as they are now. Many of the concerns (doctor's offices, shopping, travel) discussed are simply not an issue any more. Most pediatrician offices are very well equipped and able to handle twin visits. Nearly all grocery stores have those awesome shopping carts with infant seats already attached (a push/pull of two carts isn't that hard). And as far as getting around, there are literally dozens of twin and triplet strollers available now.

I found the book to consistently present the worst of every situation. From clothes, to bathing and feeding nearly all the parents seem overwhelmed and frustrated. It really isn't like that! My boys are 7 months old now and I can honestly say... raising them has been nothing like it seemed in this book.

I say, find a more a recently written book and one that is based here in the US if you live here. The cultural differences and new commoness of multiples really make for a big difference.

Enjoy your babies, and relax! My twin theory is this:
Whatever you just did... You just do it again.

Editorial Review:

For anyone expecting twins-and for those already raising them-The Parents' Guide to Raising Twins is a practical and comprehensive resource. Cherry Rowland and Elizabeth Friedrich, both mothers of twins, have tapped into a wealth of guidelines and advice from doctors and nurses, as well as the personal experiences of thirty-five other parents of twins and triplets. They map out the special problems and pleasures of:-Being pregnant with twins: how to obtain an accurate diagnosis; prenatal care; complications to watch for-Managing the early months: how to adjust to sleeping patterns; breast-feeding for two or more; the question of dressing twins-Treating young twins as individuals: how to cope with the competitiveness (and closeness) between twins, and common misconceptions about "twinness." The authors list clubs and organizations specially devoted to issues of rearing twins. With their help, no parent will feel alone in caring for more than one baby at a time.

Looking for help in all the wrong places 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book contains very little useful information for those of us expecting multiples or who have given birth to multiples. It focuses primarily on twins and the background of the frequency of twins, how twins are formed and the difference between fraternal and identical twins. The book gives no practical advice on maintaining a multiple pregnancy or how to overcome the difficulties of raising multiples.

Editorial Review:

Twins and higher multiple births bring parents unique joys-and unique challenges. Dr. Elizabeth Bryan, founder of the Multiple Births Foundation, addresses everything the parents of multiple births need to know, from conception to adulthood. For example:

-The real difference among fraternal, identical, and "half-identical" siblings
-Naming-resisting the "John and Jane" urge
-Twin languages and their effect on speech development
-Treating multiples "equally" without homogenizing them
-How to ask for and manage help-all parents of multiples need it!
-Separation and independence: getting the right mix

The increased use of fertility drugs combined with the trend toward later motherhood has made multiple births more common than ever. In frank but reassuring language, Dr. Bryan guides parents through the inimitable journey of parenting twins, triplets, and more.

Editorial Review:

With the advent of assisted reproduction, the frequency of multiple births has grown dramatically. Though once rare, triplet births are now seen surprisingly often. Whereas twins have been the object of much important study, virtually nothing has been published focusing solely on triplets, until now.Triplet Pregnancies and their Consequences is unique: it is the first systematic, scientific review of the study of triplets. Covering the range of issues and complications possible in triplet pregnancies, the book includes ten distinct sections devoted to prenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal aspects of these pregnancies. It contains an analysis of a unique database of more than 3000 triplet pregnancies provided by Matria Healthcare of Marietta, Georgia. This is the first time there have been sufficient numbers of triplets in a data set to truly understand some of the unique biological circumstances associated with triplets. Topics include:·Epidemiology and biology - including unique matched analyses of the entire French IVF registry·Prenatal diagnosis with special attention to chorionicity·Antepartum considerations with broad perspectives on treatment of preterm labor·Delivery considerations·The Matria Analysis - the largest triplet database in the world·Short-term outcomes with special attention to low birth weight·Long-term outcomes focusing on cerebral palsy and school performanceTriplet Pregnancies and their Consequences is the first of its kind, a true landmark text. It will be indispensable to all healthcare providers dealing with the worldwide "epidemic" of iatrogenic triplets.

Editorial Review:

Whether the result of fertility drugs, an "older mother" (more likely to experience a multiple ovulation), or simply the luck of the draw, multiple babies pose multiple challenges. Journalist Pamela Patrick Novotny's comprehensive exploration of life with twins--or more--provides page after page of myth-busting, educational, and highly supportive information.

Not meant for the expectant parent, this text cuts right to the chase: the babies have been born--it's time to rally. Novotny opens by discussing transitions, likening pregnancy, delivery, and homecoming to a three-ringed circus. With a deft combination of coaching tones and facts galore, she addresses each issue thoroughly and insightfully, and offers excellent suggestions for coming to terms with the many changes. Novotny seems to target her book to the doubtful, those who may feel unusually overwhelmed by the prospect of caring for more than one baby at a time, or those who need help surfacing from the murky pool of postpartum depression. Troubleshooting, planning, finding alternatives--these terms and themes can be found throughout her text, with plenty of positive results. Most helpful are the excellent chapters on mothercare, multiples' developing sense of identity and myths surrounding their genetic influences, and "Feeling the Changes: Fathers and Families." Absolutely packed with valuable suggestions, case studies, facts, and references, this book should rank quite high with parents of multiples. Team it with When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets or Quads for a complete pre- and postnatal library. --Liane Thomas

Editorial Review:

In a world that is constantly changing, Gods Word remains the standardby which we must judge all human actions and lifestyles. In Does God LoveMichaels Two Daddies?, Seth and Sara learn that God loves all people, eventhose who are disobeying Him. But they also learn that the only way to havea relationship with God is to stop sinning and turn to JesusFor the last 15 years, the homosexual community has been publishing childrensbooks promoting homosexuality, starting with the book Heather HasTwo Mommies, Daddys Roommate, and My Two Uncles. To our knowledge, no comparable childrens book designed to combat the promotion of homosexuality is available on the marketuntil now. Does God Love Michaels Two Daddies? is a professionally designed and illustrated book that promotes Gods love for all individuals, while at the same time showing, in a loving way, that homosexuality is out of harmony with Bible teaching. This book has tremendous potential to influence positively the lives of thousands of children growing up in tumultuous and confusing times.
