Editorial Review:

Here is THE book recounting the life and times of one of the most respected men in the world, Warren Buffett. The legendary Omaha investor has never written a memoir, but now he has allowed one writer, Alice Schroeder, unprecedented access to explore directly with him and with those closest to him his work, opinions, struggles, triumphs, follies, and wisdom. The result is the personally revealing and complete biography of the man known everywhere as “The Oracle of Omaha.”

Although the media track him constantly, Buffett himself has never told his full life story. His reality is private, especially by celebrity standards. Indeed, while the homespun persona that the public sees is true as far as it goes, it goes only so far. Warren Buffett is an array of paradoxes. He set out to prove that nice guys can finish first. Over the years he treated his investors as partners, acted as their steward, and championed honesty as an investor, CEO, board member, essayist, and speaker. At the same time he became the world’s richest man, all from the modest Omaha headquarters of his company Berkshire Hathaway. None of this fits the term “simple.”

When Alice Schroeder met Warren Buffett she was an insurance industry analyst and a gifted writer known for her keen perception and business acumen. Her writings on finance impressed him, and as she came to know him she realized that while much had been written on the subject of his investing style, no one had moved beyond that to explore his larger philosophy, which is bound up in a complex personality and the details of his life. Out of this came his decision to cooperate with her on the book about himself that he would never write.

Never before has Buffett spent countless hours responding to a writer’s questions, talking, giving complete access to his wife, children, friends, and business associates—opening his files, recalling his childhood. It was an act of courage, as The Snowball makes immensely clear. Being human, his own life, like most lives, has been a mix of strengths and frailties. Yet notable though his wealth may be, Buffett’s legacy will not be his ranking on the scorecard of wealth; it will be his principles and ideas that have enriched people’s lives. This book tells you why Warren Buffett is the most fascinating American success story of our time.

Editorial Review:

Warren Buffett, Carl Icahn, and George Soros all started with nothing---and made billion-dollar fortunes solely by investing. But their investment strategies are so widely divergent, what could they possibly have in common?

As Mark Tier demonstrates in this insightful book, the secrets that made Buffet, Icahn, and Soros the world's three richest investors are the same mental habits and strategies they all practice religiously. However, these are mental habits and strategies that fly in the face of Wall Street's conventional mindset. For example:

-Buffett, Icahn, and Soros do not diversify. When they buy, they buy as much as they can.

-They're not focused on the profits they expect to make. Going in, they're not investing for the money at all.

-They don't believe that big profits involve big risks. In fact, they're far more focused on not losing money than making it.

-Wall Street research reports? They never read them. They're not interested in what other people think. Indeed, Buffett says he only reads analyst reports when he needs a laugh.

In The Winning Investment Habits of Warren Buffett & George Soros you can discover how the mental habits that guided your last investment decision stack up against those of Buffett, Icahn, and Soros. Then learn exactly how you can apply the wealth-building secrets of the world's richest investors to transform your own investment results.

If you don't know Warren Buffett this is a nice overview 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is a hodgepodge of information about a great man. There are lots of quotes and interesting facts about Buffett. If you already know him then there is little that is new here but it is still presented in an enjoyable way. The second half of the book is dedicated to his investing style with a lot of random stuff. For example, Lowe dumps material about Buffett's philosophies on charitable giving in this section.

Overall, good coffee table book or a nice gift for someone perhaps. However, if you are serious in wanting to learn about Warren Buffett (especially his investing style) then I would recommend reading his letters to shareholders which is posted for free in the Berkshire Hathaway website in his annual reports. These are extremely interesting and enjoyable to read even for non-investors. What makes Buffett a great man is not just his skills and talent at making money but his philosophies on various other topics.

Editorial Review:

Most people come to know of Warren Buffett through his ability to generate wealth. However, as Janet Lowe reveals in her book, Warren Buffett Speaks, Buffett is more than a money-making machine. Warren Buffett Speaks is a library of notes and quotes that have been collected over the years, aimed at revealing the many aspects of the World's Greatest Investor--his wit, personality, and wisdom. The first half of the book deals with Buffett's view of life, family, and friends, while the latter half focuses on Buffett's investment philosophy and observations about the market. This book is a must for every Buffettologist.

Great Read - Could Use More Updated Materials and a Bit More Investing Philosophy 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

When I first came across this book, I had planned on reading a Buffet biography for quite some time. I hesitated for a while because there were so many options. As I enjoyed reading Roger Lowenstein's, When Genius Failed, I made my decision to read this particular book based solely on my knowledge of the author. Fortunately, Lowenstein did not disappoint. Indeed, this Buffet biography is very well written and will be entertaining to both the lay person and professional investor, alike. If I could suggest one or two improvements, it would be for the author to reduce the overall length and sprinkle in a few more investing ideas. Also, potential readers should be aware that most of the content ends in the 1990s when the first edition was printed. So, much of the color about his friendship with Bill Gates and his first non-US investment, Israeli-based ISCAR, is missing.

Just as he did in When Genius Failed, Lowenstein does a great job describing historical accounts of entertaining or semi-dramatic events in Buffett: The Making of an American Capitalist. Remarkably, the author is able to paint very clear pictures of scenes that occurred 50 years ago. This particular work is especially impressive as the author received no assistance from Buffet himself making the task of collecting details on such events very difficult.

Unfortunately, the book contains very little explanation of Buffet's investment strategy. This book is not an investing textbook, which is understandable. Rather, it is a biography that has some elements of Buffet's investing wisdom explained. It would be nice if it had more details on the investing front.

Some readers might find the book a bit longer than necessary. Of course, the wordiness may be a matter of personal preference. I would argue that most readers will stay thoroughly entertained throughout the book.

Editorial Review:

Starting from scratch, simply by picking stocks and companies for investment, Warren Buffett amassed one of the epochal fortunes of the 20th century -- an astounding net worth of $10 billion and counting. That awesome record has made him a cult figure.

This illuminating biography reveals a man whose conscientiousness, integrity, and good humor exist alongside an odd emotional isolation. Buffett also masterfully traces his life: his enormously successful partnership; his early, inspired investments in American Express and Geico; his companionship and investment with Katharine Graham of the Washington Post; his role in the Capital Cities purchase of ABC; his unique relationship with his wife and mistress; and his rescue of the scandal-ridden Salomon Brothers.

Editorial Review:

The book begins: "Out of the primordial ooze of dollars from a struggling textile mill called Berskhire Hathaway, Warren Buffett took some small cash streams from the business and, using investment wizardry honed during his early years working with limited funds, literally "spun" money through mergers and acquisitions. Those financial maneuvers jump-started unequaled returns on capital, which multiplied by the magic of compounding, created today's Berkshire -- an unimaginably large cosmos (and hence the theme of the book). "With the roll of the years, today's Berkshire is a powerhouse generating earnings at a breathtaking pace of $2 billion to $3 billion per calendar quarter with a stock market value of more than $200 billion. "This accomplishment, as it turns out, is of great value to more than Buffett and Berkshire shareholders because Buffett has arranged for his shares to 'go back to society.' This gift outright is the largest philanthropic donation in history. Ever." The book has more than 330 chapters and of the 1,400 photos, more than 100 are in color. Other features include not only a regular index but also a "Cosmic Photo Index" of all 1,400 pictures. The front cover photo shows Buffett in front of a NetJet fuselage (with the cosmos in the background). The back cover features an exclusive photo of the 19 people who work at headquarters at Berkshire, called "the most respected company in the world" by Barron's. Also, the work has seven chapters related to Berkshire's Vice Chairman Charles Munger, interviews with scores of Berkshire shareholders, a chapter about Buffett's trips to Canada, China, and Korea as well as a chapter about Berkshire's multibillion-dollar purchase of Marmon Holdings, a conglomerate of more than 125 "nuts and bolts" businesses. An interview with Buffett's physical fitness trainer is a highlight. The two volume set is contained in a Royal Blue case.

Editorial Review:

Warren Buffett - The Oracle of Omaha is a biography of Warren Buffett. Buffett is known for his unconventional style and frugality despite his immense wealth. With an estimated current net worth of around US $56.9 billion, he was ranked by Forbes as the third-richest person in the world as of April, 2007. Buffett is also a noted philanthropist. In 2006, Buffett announced a plan to give away his fortune to the charity ran by Bill Gates and his wife Melinda. Warren Buffett - The Oracle of Omaha is highly recommended for those interested in learning more about the CEO and largest shareholder of Berkshire Hathaway.

Is this SAT practice? 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 13 people found this review helpful.

It's not that I don't understand what he's saying. It's just that the writer seems to try to impress us with his big vocabulary.

I've been studying for the GRE, and it seems like every few sentences of this book has a GRE word in it. This is actually good for me, since it's helping me study. However, I feel like this style of writing just doesn't flow for me. I've read almost every other Buffett book out there, and most of them flow better than this book.

The author tries to describe Buffett's thought patterns as if he has gotten into his head somehow. Interesting theories, but I don't see any clear evidence indicating how the author knows these things. How do you know what's going on inside Buffett's head? There's a good chance that half this book is made up.

Great Insight! 5 out of 5 stars.

Mr. O'Loughlin provides a high quality analysis of Mr. Buffett's leadership style, rational behaviour and critical self-appraisal. The book is well-researched. Even more important, it is well thought out. There is truth here. The challenge for the reader is to look in the mirror and acknowledge how little he knows, then go forth and allocate capital on that limited basis.

Editorial Review:

Book buyers and Buffett admirers alike, have praised The Real Warren Buffett for its compelling insights into how the second richest man in America achieved his astounding success.
