This has GOT to be complete 4 out of 5 stars.

The author does a fine job in what is obviously a very thoroughly-researched and well-written work. The main thing I liked about this book is that it didn't just discuss a chronology of Ataturk's career but also looked into the ideas and influences which molded the future leader of the Turkish Republic. A little long at places, the book nevertheless makes sure the context of developments is known to the reader as well as the events themselves. While not destined to be a favorite book of mine I can certainly recommend it as a great work in this field of history.

Editorial Review:

In this major new biography of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and the first to appear in English based on Turkish sources, Andrew Mango strips away the myth, to show the complexities of one of the most visionary, influential, and enigmatic statesmen of the century. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was virtually unknown until 1919, when he took the lead in thwarting the victorious Allies' plan to partition the Turkish core of the Ottoman Empire. He divided the Allies, defeated the last Sultan, and secured the territory of the Turkish national state, becoming the first president of the new republic in 1923, fast creating his own legend.

Andrew Mango's revealing portrait of Atatürk throws light on matters of great importance today-resurgent nationalism, religious fundamentalism, and the reality of democracy.

What you need to know about the making of the Turkish nation 5 out of 5 stars.

Found by chance in a small bookstore this is one of the best books I have ever read. Finely written, it will give you all the detail you need to understand the last days of the Ottoman Empire and the birth of the Turkish Nation. Even if you are not that interested in the subject it will draw you into the fascinating detail of the life of a truly extraordinary man in extraordinary times. Buy it...you will enjoy it without being able to put it away.

Novelesque; a triumph in style 5 out of 5 stars.

Kinross approached this biography in a very unconventional manner, and the gamble paid off. Often historical subjects like Ataturk can reach into the "heavy reading" column with complicated military, social, diplomatic and political explanations. But Kinross gambles by trusting the intelligence of the reader, and depends more on conveying the strong, abrasive character of Ataturk than on the intricit, deeply-calculated broad social mechanics that surrounded him. You will walk away knowing in-depth the end of the Ottoman Empire and the rise of the Turkish Republic while getting a clear insight into the character of Ataturk: his strengths and his shortcomings. As time goes by, it is more and more important to understand Kemalism and the course of secularization and modernization in the East.

The diagrams of the battle-fields on a mile scale were extremely helpful: for those, like me, who aren't adept at reading and understanding military strategies, Kinross gives you an introductory course. For the first time, I felt like I actually *knew* what happened in some important battles.

Editorial Review:

The recent events in the Persian Gulf have made it clearer than ever that understanding the history of the Middle East is essential if a solution is to be found for its problems today. The story of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk is an important and enthralling part of that history. 6 maps.

Amazing and heroic narration of a brilliant legendary leader 5 out of 5 stars.

This biography is a well-written, comprehensive story about a fascinating and inspiring man. Even Pakistani President, Pervez Musharraf who has been known as "Ataturk's modern heir," has commented on the inspiration of Ataturk by referring to him as his "most admired person."

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was a revolutionist who replaced the Ottoman Empire and established a new, more modern and Western Republic- Turkey, one of the most powerful countries in the Middle East. He made Turkey a secular nation by introducing contemporary 20th Century reforms such as replacing the Arabic alphabet with the Latin, and the Islamic calendar with the Christian. He separated church from state and was one of the first to give women political rights such as the right to vote, even before Great Britain did.

The photographs, maps and bibliography make this one of the most easy-to-read, informative biographies I've ever read.

Everyone must read this book to learn about this philanthropist leader of Turkey.

Editorial Review:

The First President and Founder of the Republic of Turkey was one of the world's greatest leaders. He led a revolution to liberate his country and introduced a wide variety of reforms in the political, social, legal, economic and cultural spheres. This book introduces Ataturk to young readers and history buffs. It includes important historical events, his most famous quotes, a glossary, photographs, and a map of Turkey.

Editorial Review:

This biography of Ataturk aims to strip away the myth to show the complexities of the man beneath. Born plain Mustafa in Ottoman Salonica in 1881, he trained as an army officer but was virtually unknown until 1919, when he took the lead in thwarting the victorious Allies' plan to partition the Turkish core of the Ottoman Empire. He divided the Allies, defeated the last Sultan and secured the territory of the Turkish national state, becoming the first president of the new republic in 1923. He imposed coherence, order and mordernity and in the process, created his own legend and his own cult.

Concise, well-judged, sympathetic account 4 out of 5 stars.
15 of 17 people found this review helpful.

This book keeps up the generally high standard of the "Profiles in Power" series and will be very useful for readers fresh to Ataturk and modern Turkish history. The author does not conceal the blemishes in Ataturk's character, but equally the reader can hardly fail to grasp the scale of the Turkish leader's achievements against the background of the Ottoman empire's collapse and the conservatism of Turkish traditions. A longer biography would do greater justice to the complexities of Ataturk's personality and historical legacy, but this is still a reliable and enjoyable book.

A summary of the foundation of the Turkish Republic. 3 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Profiles in Power: Ataturk as well as telling us about Ataturk also summarizes the the falling down of the Ottoman Empire and the foundation of the Republic of Turkey . It does not go into details but gives overall explanations of the events. Notes and references given at the end of each chapter and the references listed in the Further Reading part is very usefull for the interested reader. Through out the book the writer can be said to be neutral to case, though I doubt the correctness of some of his views. For example the explanation of the meaning of the title "Ghazi" which is the title given to Mustafa Kemal after the War of Sakarya as the "Destroyer of the Christians", is not correct. The meaning of the word Ghazi (Gazi) is explained in the Turkish Dictionary published by Turkish Language Institude as "the title given to the commanders who, performing extraordinary courage and capabilty wins victory against the enemy." Although some comments on some issues should be double checked it is a fluent, consistent book, enjoyable to read.
